Silent Hill: Homecoming brings home several videos

You find -that- sexy? That thing makes my skin crawl.

Joystiq hands-on: Metal Gear Solid 4 - the finished game

May 17th 2008 3:42PM (Joystiq)
I'm a PS3 owner, and the SDF does such a job of coming across as arrogant and annoying that there are times when I'd actually think about taking my PS3 into gamestop. They aren't helping anyone switch to the sony camp, they just make it harder.

World of Warcraft graphics overhaul 'probable,' says producer

Whoops, sorry for the triple post, but I realize now I think I linked the wrong thing, the youtube render is a bit more than just that, what I meant to link was http://bp1.blogger.com/_TSDES-kNaiA/R8dlkm4y2vI/AAAAAAAAADY/67KaP8yGcxM/s1600-h/warlock.PNG a simple picture but illustrates a very visible quality difference at almost no work from the artists, it'd still require some engine overhauling to make it more efficient, which is better for everyone if done properly.

I should note that this would also be an option that could easily be enabled/disabled in graphics with a good engine, so a minimal performance hit to lower end rigs (and possibly if coded properly as little as an if-then switch, possibly even less.)

Probably because the resources spent on graphics are not the same resources spent on gameplay, you can have both good graphics, and good gameplay, you can have your cake, and eat it, too!

I understand that gameplay should trump graphics, and wholeheartedly agree with that point, but that's no reason the graphics need to suffer.

That being said, I like WoW's look, and I don't think it needs a complete graphical overhaul, just a streamlining of the core engine and then some work done to add layers of depth to the existing art. I saw some great concepts on this world of warcraft blog where someone simply converted a texture layer (specifically: the ambient color map) onto the normal map layer and specular light map layers, and the results were pretty incredible:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e42oPpkiys is a good example of what you could get without spending too much more effort on it, it would really require the engine at its core to be re-overhauled and made more efficient, that's the primary problem with making it look that good, is efficiency.

Fill your tanks with even more Resistance shots

Actually, now that I'm more looking over these, the color is fine, just make the sun not cast a -brown tint- on everything. Please. Last I recall the sun tends to make colors more bright and vivid, not wash them out.

Screw the vertical resolution, inject some color other than gray and brown in, I see traces of green and blue in those shots, they need more.

New Metal Gear game hinted at

May 14th 2008 10:06AM (Joystiq Playstation)
I think (and really hope) it's more likely to be a Snatcher or Zone of the Enders sequel.

Admittedly the ending to Zone of the Enders 2 didn't really need a sequel, but I still have yet to play a game quite so fast-paced ludicrous robot action without importing it since. (There's a 360 game which is essentially a ZoE ripoff sitting somewhere in my house, but I can't recall its name.)

DS Fanboy Review: Rondo of Swords

May 3rd 2008 1:43PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I've played my fair share of SRPGs. This, as far as the genre goes, is very, very brutal. Saying this is easy is like saying Bioshock is difficult.

DS Daily: Forced stylus

May 3rd 2008 1:24PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
If the model of how touchscreen controls should be is forcing them onto the consumer for better or worse, count me out. Ninja Gaiden DS features good touchscreen controls, Legend of Zelda? I'd prefer buttons, thanks.
