No, it will *not* send a message to businesses and governments about how serious people are today about the environment. It will send the message that we are a nearly mindless horde of drone who love our bread and circuses and may just make some sort of symbolic gesture of no lasting practical value. And we may not even do that very well:

Jesus. Rather than work on reducing our long term energy consumption habits, you suggest we feel wonderful about ourselves while sitting in the dark for an hour. It sends a message to the powers that be, all right: We are all idiots.

You know, in spite of all this, does anyone else get the idea that everyone is still just happy for a reason to talk about the Dreamcast again? I've never seen a console looked back on with such a warm, friendly glow in the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia.

Even I'm not immune. I dug out my copy of Typing of the Dead, the greatest typing program ever and almost solely responsible for my ability to touch-type. I mean, which whould you rather have:

"Type this sentence as fast as you can. Then try and beat your speed."

OR

"Type this sentence right. freakin. *now*. Or ZOMBIES WILL EAT YOUR FACE."

That's why to see the PS3 come in behind something that even the most strident Xbot *knows* is a failure, even for a week, is enough to make us sit up and take notice. "Whoa, they must be doing worse than I thought."

Everyone seems to like the new ads. I'm probably the only one who thinks it makes the PS3 look like a giant ball of screaming obnoxious.

Why do people give credit for Microsoft over RRoD? Because they admitted there was a problem and are trying to fix it. I'm not so naive to think they would have done it out of the kindness of their hearts if there hadn't been a massive consumer outcry, but it's still more than Sony did for my Disc Read Error.

Meh. I feel it's the same situation as the RRoD. It shouldn't have happened. But now that it *has* happened, at least they're acknowledging it and doing something about it.
