Joystiq interview: Bungie's Marty O'Donnell on the 'digital content crisis'

Oct 17th 2008 6:15PM (Joystiq)
Mike, to follow up on your slightly off-topic comment about musicians...

As a member of an internationally touring band for several years, your statements are actually opposite of the truth. Record sales are what the labels CAN recoup, so the bands see very little of this. Publishing royalties (ie, radio play and licensing) is where MOST of the money for bands comes from. Touring can go either way depending on the size of the band/production costs. There's a fine line between taking in nothing and making serious money on tour.
But it's a ridiculous notion that it's ok for artists not to get paid for album sales b/c they have other revenue streams to fall back on. It's merely the way we can survive right now. Musicians should be paid for their work spending months making a record, just as they should get paid for the months they spend on tour.
Unfortunately piracy and the incredibly inept ability for the industry to adapt to the new digital model has dealt a very solid blow to album revenue for the labels (and thus the artists).

Rock Band's AC/DC package comes complete with fine print

Oct 1st 2008 10:09AM (Joystiq Xbox)
i like ac/dc as much as the next guy, but i'm not paying $30 to purchase all 18 songs. where's the a la carte option? this is a crappy move because i guarantee that given the option, there are only a few people who would still buy ALL songs. and despite the fact that i'm somewhere near 200 songs for RB2, do i want ac/dc to make up 10% of my list?

Nerd grudge match: Geek Squad vs. Apple Genius

Sep 9th 2008 10:30AM (TUAW.com)
never dealt with the GS, but every time I visit the "genius" bar its a painful experience. Some of the most uninformed, unhelpful people I've ever had to speak with. For only having like a half dozen products in the entire store, they know surprisingly little about anything short of how to tell someone to reboot to try and fix a problem.

Guitar Hero: World Tour on stage debut

May 29th 2008 12:29PM (Joystiq Xbox)
honestly there just doesn't look like there is anything innovative about this. GH is playing catch-up to Rock Band, which makes me believe RB2 will do something to further separate itself as the better game. They've already destroyed GH in the DLC area, as well as the graphics, AND customer support when it comes to crappy instruments (both are to blame for this).

also, anyone playing rock band recently has noticed that they've stepped up their game on the difficulty w/ all of the DLC. it was a reasonable gripe at first, but they've responded quite well. besides, rock band is about a group of people having fun playing good songs together, not about being locked in your room by yourself trying to master Dragonforce songs to post on youtube.

GH: Aerosmith: Same old Les Paul, new faceplate

Apr 16th 2008 6:21PM (Joystiq Xbox)
agreed. its the best guitar periph yet.

but if it IS broke (like mine is), they wont fix it. nor will they offer to sell it individually without the game bundled.

for a game that offers a local multiplayer mode, this makes no sense at all.
