Here's another possibility. TBWA/Chiat/Day is the ad agency for both Sony Playstation and Apple. It potentially may be a case of assets being reused and passed along between creatives.
I used to work for these guys so I'm hoping that sloppy work is not the reason. Oh well, it can happen.
Here's your marketing tip of the day: If they really wanted to attract new players or bring back players, they'd have this entire event available for free. Throw out 10-day passes like nobody's business and you'll get enough interest that you may net out with more players than you started.
(of course, this is all with the assumption that you have something of value, which is questionable with SWG 2.0)
Since I'm actually old enough to remember this... That controller is not from the Atari 2600, we didn't have fancy side buttons back then. That controller is actually one of those recent "play a gazillion games from one controller" gizmos you plug straight into your TV. I got one for Xmas two years ago. Still a cool badge though.
Let's not forget the price benefit. This far back, you can do all sorts of price forecasting as well. If demand is great at a $50 price point prior to launch, why not launch the title at a $60 price point?
Wow, the sell-out factor on this is mind-boggling. May I suggest a big red button marked "Push for XP". That'll at least save them some programming time.
Wow, all that dry logic felt like a shot in the face. That wasn't really necessary though, everyone knows: Nobody fact-checks politicians unless you're a anti-patriot or a dirty liberal.
One variable in the equation no one seems to be talking about are the consumers. The gamer public consuming the gamer press plainly guilty of looking for the lightest of journalistic content. Just take a look at what gamers consistently Digg for and you'll see that most of it is fanboy and sensational type of articles. It's no wonder that the press and publishers enjoy throwing chum into the frenzy. So if you look at the whole equation, everyone is guilty of this bad journalism.
I can attest that it makes me a better driver. In a near accident recently, I reflected back on how I avoided certain death and yes, it was all the practice in GT. They don't teach you twitchy avoidance moves in driver's ed.
