Killzone 2 developers talk development, E3 2005

Jul 11th 2007 5:58PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I wasn't impressed with Killzone 2, and neither were many of the analysts. There were plenty of parts of the game where the graphics got choppy and the textures weren't good looking at all.

And by the way,

Did anyone notice that Sony's management executive, Jack Tretton, tried to copy what Bill Gates did at last year's E3?

Last year Peter Moore indicated the show was about to end, and then Bill Gates said, "Peter, isn't there one more thing you forgot, something the people in the audience would probably like to see."

Then, Microsoft showed the video of Halo 3.

This year, we got a PERFECT example of why the Sony Playstation 3 is called the Fony Plagiarization 3.

This year, Sony's management executive Jack Tretton says to the other management executive named Phil Harrison, "Phil, isn't there something you forgot."

Then Phil Harrison shows a demo of Killzone 2.

The HUGE difference between Halo 3 and Killzone 2 is that Halo 2 is the most successful video game of all-time, whereas the original Killzone game received crappy review scores of 6.9 and 7.5 from reviews on reliable websites like IGN and Gamespot.

Even Adam Sessler of X-Play on channel G4 said that he wasn't impressed with Killzone 2 because of the scenese with less than impressive graphics. He even made the comment that the original Killzone "was NOT a good game."

It's like the line from the song says, "But Killzone one, sucked be-fore, so what makes you think we want it more."

Seriously, why would want a sequel to a game rating so low in the past.

Microsoft's E3 conference is over ... the aftermath

Jul 11th 2007 4:44AM (Joystiq Xbox)
With the exception of Resident Evil 5, Microsoft didn't mention anything related to 2008.

Microsoft made that decision because, as they say, and as Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb agree with, the Xbox 360 has BY FAR the best videogame release list for the Holiday shopping season of 2007.

All of the analysts agree with Microsoft when they say the Xbox 360 2007 holiday lineup of games is the best console lineup of games ever in the history of console gaming during a holiday shopping season.

Microsoft deliberately chose not to look at games that will be released in 2008, because it would have taken away from the attention of the HUGE number of games that will be released in 2007.

Games that will be released in 2008, such as Fable 2, Alan Wake, Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery, Ninja Gaiden 2, are games that are very exciting to talk about on Internet websites, but when you have only two hours of time to talk, it makes a lot more sense to show games that will be released in 2007.

If the Xbox 360 would have had a smaller number of awesome games being released in 2007, maybe they would have shown some of the 2008 games. But, Xbox 360 really does have a software lineup that is the best in the history of gaming for 2007. This years Xbox 360 games will break the records of the 2004 Holiday shopping season.

Microsoft told it like it is: Holiday 2004 was the most successful season of all time. It had three games that were the sales leaders: Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Madden.

This year of Holiday 2007, Xbox 360 is the ONLY place you can play Halo 3, the ONLY place you can play the COMPLETE Grand Theft Auto 4, and the ONLY place you can play Madden Football at 60 frames per second.

And when you add other exclusives like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Rock Band, Ace Combat 6, Virtua Fighter 5 with Online, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Katamari, and so many other awesome games, like Assassins Creed, Call of Duty 4, and the dozens of other games they mentioned, I have to say in all honesty that this really is BY FAR the best release list I have EVER seen for a holiday shopping season. I agree with Adam Sessler that it may be a good idea to use up all your "sick-days" from work, just so you can play all those awesome new Xbox 360 games!

That is why Holiday 2007 for the Xbox 360 will be the most successful holiday shopping season in the history of gaming. Microsoft really does have the best console lineup of games EVER during the Holiday shopping season!

Personally, I am looking forward to playing Mass Effect and Halo 3 more than anything else!

Konami hints at MGS 4 jumping ship

Jul 10th 2007 11:45AM (Joystiq Xbox)
If Konami were intelligent, they would release Metal Gear Solid 4 exclusively for the Xbox 360. That way the game would be optimized for Xbox 360 hardware.

People now often say that performance of Xbox 360 games is better than Playstation 3 games. Those people are correct. If Hideo Kojima releases a PS3 version, and then someone younger releases an Xbox 360 version, the other person will instantly become a legend because he created something more impressive than Hideo Kojima. Konami and Hideo Kojima need to consider that.

I think it would be smart to release MGS4 exclusively for Xbox 360.

Konami hints at MGS 4 jumping ship

Jul 10th 2007 11:40AM (Joystiq Xbox)
I would buy Metal Gear Solid 4 for my Xbox 360, but I would never consider spending $500 to buy a Playstation 3. The PS3 system doesn't have enough games.

I am not interested in Blu-ray discs. I already have 200 DVD discs and a cool Denon Audio/Video receiver that upconverts everything to 1080p. I am not going to buy all of those discs over again when they look almost identical.

If Konami releases Metal Gear on the Xbox 360, I probably would buy it, if it were to receive good reviews from the magazines. But, if it didn't receive good reviews I probably wouldn't buy it.

I agree with Konami. The sales and performance of the Playstation 3 have been very disappointing. Just look how fast Sony was forced to lower the price of the PS3. There is no way a $100 price drop is going to matter anyways.

Canadians get 4 games free with 360 purchase

Jul 9th 2007 7:00PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Crackdown is my favorite game I've ever played!

There is no game funner than Crackdown; that is for sure!

When you watch cops come in and shoot down a bunch of bad guys, and then kill them, it is cool to see the bad guys drop down on the floor and say stuff like, "I see the light," and "I this the way it ends." And then the police officers will walk up to them, take out their shotguns, and just keep shooting their bodies on the ground!!!!!! That is AWESOME!!!!

I almost peed my pants when I saw that happen the first time, and it went even further!!!!

The little details in Crackdown are the best I've ever seen! After cops help you kill off those bad guys, they shoot their guns up in the air repeatedly and keep yelling with excitement! It's awesome and funny to see!

The online way that Crackdown is played really does make it the funnest online co-op game I've ever played. There is just something special about one person driving, and the other person standing on top of the car using a machine gun or rocket launcher to kill off those bad guys.

The storyline to Crackdown is so cool and funny. The ending is one of the best ones I have ever seen in my life. So awesome, so unexpected, and so funny!

Crackdown is awesome!

Gears of War PC montage video leaked [update 1]

Jul 7th 2007 8:36PM (Joystiq Xbox)
This video looks awesome! But this isn't a remixed version of the Xbox 360 game that ends up being classified as "Gears of War" for PC, because this video clearly shows new bosses, not just new maps. This could potentially be downloadable extra stuff for Xbox 360, which is also included in a future PC version. But this could also be Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360.

Epic said all along that there would eventually be a PC version of Gears of War. It was that way with Halo from Bungie, and Halo 2 from Bungie.

But I would NEVER trade the last YEARS worth of FUN that I had with Gears of War on the Xbox 360!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The awesome thing about having the Xbox 360 is it gives you the ability to enjoy a game like Halo 2 for three years, then get a new PC and enjoy the game again with better graphics on the PC once it is released.

Epic said we won't see a PC version of Gears of War anytime soon, but when/if we do, we can be very sure that it will be like Shadowrun where we can play PC vs Xbox 360 over the Xbox Live Gold service.

Windows Live now has Achievements similar to Xbox Live. In fact, Halo 2 on Windows Vista actually has Achievements that go directly to your Xbox Live Gamertag for the Xbox 360! So if you are interested in using Halo 2 to boost your Xbox Live Gamerscore, then use Halo 2 on Windows Vista to do it!

Games from First-Party and Second-Party companies that produce software published by Microsoft Game Studios will always end up being released for the Xbox 360 LOOOOONG before they are released on PC!!!!!!

That alone makes the Xbox 360 worth the price of admission! Xbox 360 already has BY FAR the BEST software library of any next-generation game system.

When amazing games like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Crackdown, Lost Planet, and Halo 3 are released on Xbox 360 there is NOBODY who is going to stop me from being the first pers in line to buy those games for the Xbox 360!!!

I want to play those games AS SOON AS THEY ARE RELEASED!!!!!

I'm not going to sit there for years listening to my friends who have an Xbox 360 tell me how awesome all those games are saying, "One day those games will/might-be released for my PC."

If I were to do something like that, I would be as stupid as all of the Playstation 3 owners who waited seven months for an inferior version of Rainbow Six: Vegas that has less polygon detail in the characters faces, doesn't include rumble in the controller, doesn't include Face-Mapping, and doesn't play as good as the Xbox 360 version, even though it costs $20 more!

The Xbox 360 has sold 8 million more systems than the Playstation 3 because the Xbox 360 is a LOT better! The Wii has sold 5 million more systems than the Playstation 3, because the Wii is a LOT better in terms of providing gameplay experiences that are fun!

If you look at games being released on the PC, the majority of games being released are almost always released simultaneously for Xbox 360 and PC, but they have no plans for release on Playstation 3.

Look at examples of games like Command & Conquer 3, Two Worlds, Overlord, Bioshock, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Dungeon Hero, and many others!

Xbox 360 is the only console system where those games can be played.

And look how all the third-party games released on both consoles always end up better with higher ratings on the Xbox 360. Look how this years three football games will run at 60 frames per second with resolution upconverted to 1080p on the Xbox 360, but the Playstation 3 versions of this years football games will only run at 30 frames per second.

The reason for that is because the PS3 generic GPU from Nvidia is week compared to the custom Xbox 360 GPU from ATI. The Xbox 360 can display 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to only 275,000,000, polygons per second on the PS3. It is said that this years football games are a PERFECT example of that ATI advantage, because the Xbox 360 will LITERALLY be displaying TWICE as many polygons, since the framerate will be twice as high.

Xbox 360 has the best software library right now, and it has the best features right now--both online and offline.

That won't change anytime within the next few years! And that is why the Xbox 360 is the next-generation leader!

360 Virtua Fighter 5 has online play!

Jul 6th 2007 9:37PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Really, this console generation completely belongs to the Xbox 360. This really is the generation of the Wii60, because the Xbox 360 and the Wii control two different parts of the market, while the Playstation 3 is left fighting for scraps on the floor.

The Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will now receive Online Play, even though the PS3 version didn't include that feature. That isn't a surprise, because it was like that with Virtua Tennis 3.

Street Fighter 2 on the Xbox Live Arcade sometimes had a little bit of lag because it was built under the rule that no game could use more than 50MB of space. Microsoft has now changed that rule for Xbox Live Arcade. But it's more important to remember that a rule like that never existed in the first place for regular Xbox 360 games. That's why Dead or Alive 4 currently works so well when you play online.

VF5 will obviously be similar to Dead or Alive 4, but even better in terms of online play because VF5 will be built on Final Versions of the development kits, while Dead or Alive 4 was built on Pre-Alpha Development kits that allowed the programmers to only have access to one-sixth of the General Purpose CPU power of the Xbox 360.

Virtua Fighter 5 is going to be an amazing game on the Xbox 360. The thought of playing with the extra features, like a controller that rumbles is awesome. Being able to play a Dojo mode and a new Quest mode is awesome.

The PS3 version of VF5 was pathetic because when you took the time to custom design a characters outfit, there was no way to play against anyone else online, and you couldn't even save the character to a memory card, like you could with VF4 on the PS2. So, unless you and a friend built characters on the same hard drive for the PS3, you couldn't play custom characters against each other.

It isn't like that with the Xbox 360 version! The Xbox 360 version is MUCH BETTER! You will be able to go ALL THE WAY and use your custom characters with their custom outfits to play against people from all over the world!!!!

And the Artificial Intelligence has always been important in Virtua Fighter games. VF5 on the PS3 had really STUPID artificial intelligence. It was like it was letting you kick the crap out of it for no reason. All of the editors of magazines and websites point out that the A.I. of the Xbox 360 version is much better in ways that make the enemies seem smarter and more fun to play against.

The Xbox 360 really does have the BEST software library, and it OBVIOUSLY is going to stay that way for a LOOOOOOONG time!!!!!!

Elite to be priced cheaper in Japan

Jul 5th 2007 8:28PM (Joystiq Xbox)
The form of logic mentioned in this article isn't correct, because if it were then the Playstation 3 would be selling for about $200 right now, since nobody in any market of the world is buying the thing!

The day the Dreamcast launched, it had quite a few AWESOME games!

PS3 still only has two games that have won the Gamespot Editor's Choice Award, and BOTH of those games are on the Xbox 360, AND rated higher on the Xbox 360!

Dreamcast ended up failing even though it was only $199 when it launched, and ended up with about 40 A+ games!

PS3 has a library of games that really sucks compared to the competition. It isn't even a good library on its own. Games like NBA 07, Genji, and Untold Legends are some of the worst rated games of all time!

Playstation 3 doesn't have a chance of selling well at that price or any price, because it doesn't have a good enough software library.

The point I'm getting at is price is important, but the thing that matters the most is gaming. Dreamcast didn't have any EA games, and that was probably what killed it in the end.

Now, the Xbox 360 receives LOTS of games from EA that the Playstation 3 doesn't get. Look at how the Playstation 3 doesn't have any Real-Time Strategy games at all, but the Xbox 360 has Command & Conquer 3, along with Lord of the Rings: Battle for Mid-Earth 2. Plus there are THREE MORE Real-Time strategy games on the way for Xbox 360, but NONE for Playstation 3.

Xbox 360 really owns that genre, just like almost every other!

The Sports games from EA and 2K Sports are SO MUCH better on Xbox 360. Look at how MLB 2K7 is SO MUCH better on Xbox 360. And look how ALL of the Football games this year will run at 60 frames per second on Xbox 360 but only 30 frames per second on PS3.

It is logical to conclude that software and third-party support are what count the most toward the influence of a game systems success.

Halo 3 climbs Japan's Amazon list

Jul 4th 2007 6:36PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Halo 3 is going to be SUPER POPULAR all over the world!!!!!!

Japanese people are really good at Gears of War. I bet they will be really good at Halo 3, as well.

Just like Halo and Halo 2 were, but even more popular!

When I was playing the Halo 3 beta online, I thought it was super smooth when I was playing. My new Official Xbox Magazine says that it was running at a really smooth 60 frames per second during those online modes.

The magazine also made some guesses about what the single-player Campaign mode will be like. It turns out there guesses are correct on at least a couple of the parts of the game.

For example, we now know that Halo 3 will have a 4-player Campaign mode online! That is something the magazine guessed and was correct about. That will be AWESOME!

4-player Halo in the Campaign mode will be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to team up with you guys and have FUN kicking the butts of those alien Covenant members!!!!!!

Fatal Inertia dated, now a 360 exclusive?

Jul 4th 2007 6:12PM (Joystiq Xbox)
@ #16:

With all due respect, your theories are very incorrect. As #17 said, "the proof is in the pudding," or in other words, "Performance is what counts." And there is no doubt about it, the videogame graphic performance of the Xbox 360 is FAR SUPERIOR to the Playstation 3!

Sony employees often try to make an excuse for the Playstation 3, saying that the PS3 ends up with "ports" from the Xbox 360, which is why the Xbox 360 versions of all the games appearing on both systems are always better on the Xbox 360.

But that is an invalid excuse that simply isn't true! Xbox 360 outperforms the Playstation 3 in all situations, even in the few situations when the PS3 is the primary development platform.

Virtua Fighter 5 is one of the BEST EXAMPLES that shows how a game made with the PS3 as the primary development platform will still end up best on the Xbox 360.

Virtua Fighter 5 was originally designed as a Playstation 3 exclusive game. But now that the Xbox 360 version is close to release, the editors of magazines and websites have confirmed that the Xbox 360 version has significantly better graphics than the Playstation 3 version.

The Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 also has has much better Artificial Intelligence. Ubisoft confirmed a long time ago that the Xbox 360 version of Assassins Creed also has superior Artificial Intelligence, because the Playstation 3 doesn't have the type of hardware that is capable of running A.I. with a similar level of performance. Tecmo confirmed this when they said Ninja Gaiden 2 will involve certain Boss fight scenes where an entire Xbox 360 CPU with two threads will be used exclusively for advanced Artificial Intelligence.

If the PS3 were to try and do something similar with that form of advanced A.I., it would be impossible to display any form of advanced graphics on the screen, because both of the PS3 CPU threads would be used for Artificial Intelligence, which means no form of advanced graphics could be displayed on screen at the same time.

The PS3 only has one 3.2Ghz CPU; it has 2 Threads that share information with other processors. In the case of the PS3 the Shared Threads share the instructions with the SPE (Sub-Processors) in the PS3's parallel processing design.

Each of the six SPE sub-processors that you refer does have a Thread, but like you said it is a Non-Shared Thread--it only Receives instructions, rather than being able to Send instructions, like the two PS3 CPU Threads.

This means the PS3 CPU has only has Two Threads to Send instructions with, but it has Six SPE Subprocessors asking to Receive instructions from the CPU.

Obviously that is impossible.

It is very common to hear developers say that developing games for the PS3 is literally like asking someone to juggle six balls (SPEs) using only two arms (CPU Threads).

That is a development environment that programmers don't enjoy working with, because it is very inefficient, and virtually impossible to effectively achieve the goal of consistent high-level performance.

The design of the Xbox 360 is MUCH MORE efficient, and much more effective at achieving the goal of consistent high-level performance.

The Xbox 360 includes THREE 3.2Ghz CPU processors, each with Two Threads--for a total of SIX Threads that can be used Send instructions in ANY WAY developer want to control the dedicated functions of the CPU and GPU! That is a development environment that programmers LOVE!

That is why the Xbox 360 has FAR MORE power than the Playstation 3 in the area referred to as "General Purpose CPU Power."

The Xbox 360 uses the much newer and much more advanced architecture design refered to as a "Multi-Core design." PCs often brag about their new "Dual-Core" design. The Xbox 360 takes that a step further with its "Tri-Core" design, with processors dedicated for use in videogaming! That is FAR SUPERIOR to the outdated "Parallel Processing" architectural design used in systems like the Playstation 3 and Sega Saturn. The PS3 and Sega Saturn are very difficult to work with because of that form of design that isn't optimized for use in videogames.

With the Multi-Core architectural design of the Xbox 360, developers can effortlessly take an Xbox 360 and devote an ENTIRE CPU to the control of Artificial Intelligence if they wanted to! Tecmo has said they plan on doing that with Ninja Gaiden 2 for several parts of the game where you fight very intelligent enemies! With the PS3, if that sort of A.I. was needed, a trade-off would need to be made in the area of graphics. Obviously, the design of the Xbox 360 is FAR SUPERIOR.

The Xbox 360 even has a special form of RAM called eDRAM that backs up the General Purpose Power of the CPU. This 10MB of eDRAM is amazingly efficient when it comes to helping developers do what they want to do while controlling the CPU and GPU.

Developers often say that the Xbox 360 is so easy to develop for that it is like having six arms (CPU Threads) to juggle only two balls (The CPU and GPU), while still having a friend (10MB of eDRAM) saying, "Don't worry, if you start to drop one, I will catch it for you."

There is absolutely no doubt about it that the Xbox 360 is MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE than the Playstation 3 in the area of achieving a consistent level of impressive performance.

The games show this to be true. The level of performance seen in Xbox 360 games outperforms the Playstation 3 by a wide margin, and that margin continues to grow in favor of the Xbox 360.

This year's football games run at 60 frames per second on the Xbox 360 at a resolution that will be upconverted all the way up to 1080p, just like all Xbox 360 games, since the Xbox 360 possessed that ability in the hardware, unlike the Playstation 3 (which is why 720p Playstation 3 games used on a 1080i HDTV set will actually be seen in only 480p).

The Xbox 360 hardware can display 500,000,000 polygons per second, compared to only 275,000,000 polygons per second on the Playstation 3.

Football games are the PERFECT example that show this polygon superiority!

This years Football games literally (not practically, but literally) display TWICE as many polgyons on the Xbox 360! This is the PERFECT example that shows the Xbox 360 displays 500,000,000 polygons per second compared to only 275,000,000 polygons per second on the Playstation 3. Just look at the boxes of the systems for proof of this specification. But it is the PERFORMANCE of the GAMES, the PERFORMANCE of the SOFTWARE, that counts the MOST, and that is where the Xbox 360 OUTPERFORMS the Playstation 3 the most!

Football cannot be considered a "fluke" thing. Look at the way games in so many other genres are so much better on the Xbox 360. Look at games like F.E.A.R. that won Awards on the PC and Xbox 360, but offered very disappointing performance on the Playstation 3. The Playstation 3 was so disappointing that the framerate of F.E.A.R. often dropped below 20 frames per second and caused slowdown in the game. Read this to see for yourself: http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3158930

Compare the versions of Call of Duty 3. The Xbox 360 version runs perfectly smooth, and gives you the ability to talk online while playing with 24 people online. But the Playstation 3 version has a very disappointing framerate that is choppy and inconsistent. The Playstation 3 version of Call of Duty 3 is like F.E.A.R. and so many other PS3 third-party games--it doesn't let you talk to anyone while playing online.

I was writing with capitals to show emphasis on those areas. I was not trying to "scream." Italic isn't an available option on this website, though.

But once again I will say,

There is absolutely no doubt about it that the Xbox 360 is MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE than the Playstation 3 in the area of achieving a consistent level of impressive performance.

The games show this to be true. The level of performance seen in Xbox 360 games outperforms the Playstation 3 by a wide margin, and that margin continues to grow in favor of the Xbox 360.
