Like Destiny, Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II's online components were at a smaller scale than other MMOs. Squint long and hard enough at The Tower and you'll think you're playing Sega's cult-favorite online game.
Focused on the battle rather than the story, Sony Online Entertainment's Planetside 2 is a solid substitute while we wait for Destiny to launch. It's a free-to-play, MMOFPS with great player customization. And unlike Destiny, it's on PC.
Loot is God in Gearbox Software's Borderlands franchise, something that is available in Destiny but not overly emphasized. If you like being rewarded for those kills, the world of Borderlands 2 is a good place to visit.
MatthewTitus – "I'd also add Too Human to that mix (but better). Especially when in the Tower...."
Cyclone_Jack – "I'll have to agree. I really enjoyed Too Human. It took me a few minutes to get used to the controls, but once I did I played the crap out if it. It's one of the few games where I completed all of the achievements without really trying for them, and then continued to play it for quite some time afterwards."
bradsboards – "Warframe definitely needs to be on this list. Coop shooter, solar system map, super powers, loot and leveling galore. Plus, it is readily available on some of those shiny new consoles you're busy not playing Destiny on."
BrilliantCojones – "Agree on the Warframe call-out. Needs to be in that list."
ZacLaCroix 2 – "No mention of Mass Effect? 'Humans find something mysterious on Mars that advances their civilization greatly until their planet is threatened centuries later by a mysterious dark force connected to what they discovered on Mars' doesn't sound familiar at all?"
Lord_Negatron – "Not to mention the Warlock melee attack causing enemies to dematerialize into thin air, something akin to a biotic attack."
mashlad27 – "No one's mentioned Metroid Prime? It is sooooo similar, I love it. The Ghost thing is just like the scanning visor. Metroid Prime has gotta be on the list. The first ship in Destiny is basically the same too."
