The "wizards" of Harry Potter would rather speak to one another by turning themselves into fireplace embers than using a phone, and they invented newspapers with moving pictures in them instead of learning how a TV works. We're pretty sure that Voldemort would run shrieking from a PlayStation 3.

But you know how to wield a PS3's magic, so you can take advantage of this powerful Muggle artifact. Starting this week, you'll be able to buy a special PS3 bundle containing a 160GB PS3, a Blu-Ray of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in both 2D and 3D, and download vouchers for the first two Harry Potter movies. You'll also get 30 days of PlayStation Plus, meaning that some of the items in the PlayStation Store will suddenly be cheaper for you, as if by magic.
Say 'Hallow' to the new Harry Potter PS3 bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 12:00:00 EST. Nope, you still won't get an HDMI cable in the box with new PlayStation 3 hardware that arrives this September in Japan, but you will get a "charcoal black" console with decreased power consumption, a lightened chassis, and a 320GB HDD. Thrillingly named the "CECH-3000B," the new model was announced by Sony of Japan this past weekend, alongside the opening of an official website (once a retailer had outed it).

Apparently a handful of visual changes have been made to the system as well, specifically applying to the power and eject buttons, but the changes aren't obvious in images released thus far.

The console by itself will run ¥34,980 ($435.56), and a 160GB version of the new model will ship with a previously announced Tales of Xillia bundle this September. It should also be noted that the Tales of Xillia model is ¥37,980 ($470) and looks way, way sweeter.
New PS3 hardware update in Japan; Xillia bundle comes with new model originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 09:30:00 EST. This might be a slightly scary time to become a PS3 owner, but Sony and Activision are making it a bit more appealing by launching a limited-edition Call of Duty: Black Ops bundle on March 31. The package contains a 160GB PS3 system, the game, and the First Strike DLC, for the PS3's regular $299.99 price. So you get the best-selling game of all time for free. Not bad!

Of course, the downside to that is that since it's the best-selling game ever, you might already have a copy on another system. But for those of you who haven't gotten it yet, totally great deal!
Continue reading New 'limited' PS3 bundle throws in Call of Duty: Black Ops

New 'limited' PS3 bundle throws in Call of Duty: Black Ops originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 May 2011 09:33:00 EST. Still have a big old Amazon gift card kicking around from the holidays? Why not use it to buy ... something that'll give you another big old Amazon gift card? Amazon is currently offering a $50 credit with the purchase of a 160GB PlayStation 3 -- whose base price is also knocked down almost five dollars to $295.88.

Sure, it's not as much of a bonus as the $100 credit Amazon handed out last month, but it's precisely $50 more free money than you usually get for buying a video game system.
Get $50 credit with 160GB PS3 at Amazon originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 23:00:00 EST. The company announced the new hardware configuration at its Gamescom presentation, along with a new 320GB configuration!

The 160GB model will arrive in Europe in October, for 299 Euros, according to our man on the ground at Gamescom. It will replace the 120GB model as the standard. The 320GB version will be available September 15, as part of a Move bundle, for 349 Euros.

Update: Sony announced a North American release for both of these systems on the PlayStation Blog. The 160GB is shipping to retail now for $300, and the 320GB Move bundle, with Sports Champions, a Move controller, a PlayStation Eye, and a demo disc, will be out September 19 for $400.
The SKU update, which is our favorite kind of PS3 update, retains the 120GB model's price of $299.99.
Previously, the 160GB model has only been available in Japan. Further adding to the mystery is an image on the GameStop front page touting this model of PS3 as "Just Announced," even though it hasn't been officially announced by Sony. "Just announced privately to GameStop," maybe.

This new model is available through GameStop in a standard hardware bundle ($299.99), as part of a $404.97 God of War 3 bundle containing the game and two controllers, and in a $379.97 Accessory Bundle with two controllers and a Bluetooth remote. We're checking in with Sony about this (sort of) announcement, about its possible retail exclusivity, and about whether the 320GB model will also become available.

If you were in the market for a white PS3 Slim, but didn't want one with Lightning all up on it, you're in luck! Sony Japan has just introduced a new "Classic White" system, along with a new white vertical stand and, of course, Classic White DualShock 3 controllers. The new system is outfitted with a 160GB hard drive. The 160GB PS3 will retail for 29,980 ($341).

In addition, Sony is selling the "Charcoal Black" PS3 Slim in a 160GB Torne digital recorder bundle, for ¥36,980 ($421), and a version with a luxurious 320GB hard drive (and no Torne) for ¥34,980 ($398). All of these are going on sale -- in Japan only -- on July 29. The current 120GB PS3 Slim is now going "open price," meaning retailers can drop the price at their discretion.
White PS3 Slim, larger hard drives offered in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 10:28:00 EST. For better and for worse, this generation of consoles gives consumers many choices at the (potential) expense of causing confusion at the store. In all, there have been six different hardware configurations for the PS3, with two of those currently in production.

So, it's with this in mind that we present to you a handy guide for discerning the difference between the various PlayStation 3 versions (aka SKUs) out there. Please note that the red and green coloring is not only festive decor for the holiday season, but a subjective highlight of what each version excels in (or subsequently lacks).

There's been some confusion about all the various PS3 models that are available. Sony has introduced, and discontinued, so many different SKUs over the PS3's relatively short lifespan so far. Did you know, with the discontinuation of the Metal Gear Solid 4 model, there will only be two SKUs on the market? And did you know that neither will have backwards compatibility? Check out Joystiq's handy reference guide to see the stats of each SKU -- and if make sure you've nabbed the system that fits your needs exactly!

The 160GB model announced at Leipzig today will also be coming to America in a new bundle featuring last year's blockbuster PS3 exclusive, Uncharted. For $499, the 160GB system will include the new 160GB system, a DUALSHOCK 3 controller, a voucher for PAIN and a copy of Uncharted. It will be available in November.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."
160GB model also announced for America: $499, November release originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:22:00 EST. With game installations, downloadable content and digitally distributed titles cluttering up our PlayStation 3's brain, it comes as little surprise to see Sony announcing yet another SKU with increased storage capacity. The word from its 2008 Games Convention press conference is that a 160 gigglebyte model -- which is otherwise identical to others units -- will be hitting Europe on October 31st, complete with €70 worth of downloadable game content. But is the €449 price tag a trick or a treat?

We're checking with Sony regarding any plans to release this model elsewhere.
GC 2008: 160GB PlayStation 3 hitting Europe Oct. 31 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:00:00 EST. Looks like the retailer leaks were right. The 80GB PS3 will launch in Europe this Friday (except for Australia). A new 160GB model has also been announced. Retailing for €449, this premium bundle will include a €70 game and will be available on Oct 31st. This bundle will not include PS2 backwards compatibility either.
80GB goes on sale in Europe this Friday, 160GB PS3 available 10/31 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 11:25:00 EST. Adding to earlier claims from an Ars Technica mole, IGN reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.

Sony told IGN that any talk about new consoles iterations is rumor and speculation, and therefore no comment. An Ars Technica "mole" reports that the 80GB PS3 is indeed out and will be replaced by a 120- or 160GB PS3 with a DualShock 3 controller at the same price point ($499). Beyond the extra gigglebytes and the rumbling controller, the "mole" had nothing else to add; questions regarding backwards compatibility, USB ports and other such incidentals will have to wait for another day.

CVG spoke with Sony Europe which dismissed the story as "rumour and speculation." Sony America gave us a similar response, minus the British "u." A Sony America spokesperson said, "As you know, we don't comment on rumor or speculation." For those keeping track, the emergence of a new PS3 model would be the <strike>fifth</strike>, <strike>sixth</strike>, <strike>fourth</strike> *mumble* SKU ... actually, we've lost count.

Read: Mole: 80GB PS3 dead, 120-160GB with Dual Shock 3 incoming
Read: Sony Europe responds

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Rumor: 120 - 160 GB PS3 with rumble in the pipeline originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 11:30:00 EST. Ars Technica's seemingly reliable inside source has snuck out of the shadows with another interesting bit of hardware "news". We know that the 80GB PS3 is being discontinued, even if Sony won't admit to it themselves. The rumour is that another SKU (for those of you playing at home, that's the fifth since launch) will take the place of the 80GB, and will come bundled with a Dual Shock 3 controllers. Prices will stay the same, but the new SKU will have a 120-160GB hard drive.

The article doesn't indicate whether the new SKU will have backwards compatibility, memory card readers, more than two USB ports or, you know, whether it even really exists. We're not convinced that this is the best idea - the 40GB has been the only SKU available in Europe for a wee while now and it's doing great. Why such a big hard drive? Is there something coming soon that is going to require so much storage space? We know Sony have been discussing video and music downloads for quite some time, so is it finally on the horizon?

Speculation on this can go on forever. We're going to remain skeptical until something concrete appears. If it's anything like the 40GB or 80GB revelations, we'll know it's coming a few weeks before it's "announced".
Rumour: 120GB+ PS3 on its way in rumble bundle? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Jan 2008 09:35:00 EST.
