Famed PSP hacker Fanjita has taught an old crack a new trick as the <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> saved game exploit has <a href="http://pspupdates.qj.net/Goofy-exploit-by-Noobz-Hello-World-on-firmwares-2-0-3-03-/pg/49/aid/80581">once again</a> brought Sony's PSP security measures to its knees, enabling any and all firmware versions to run homebrew applications.<br /><br />That's odd. We thought they squashed that bug a<a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2006/04/25/firmware-update-2-70-now-available/"> long time ago</a>. According to Fanjita, Sony didn't quite bring their A-game when it came to stopping their unruly fan base. <br /><br />It's not all sunshine and unicorns for those itching to tear apart the coding that holds their PSP together. The brave will need an original copy of <em>Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories</em> (later copies were updated to prevent this trick from resurfacing) and nerves of steel. An "easy mode" downgrader isn't available yet, but the wait should give you enough time to scrounge up a stack of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/04/hacked-psone-emulation-on-psp-now-more-efficient/">PS One</a> games to stick in there.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/psp-firmware-cracked-wide-open-by-grand-theft-auto-again/">PSP firmware cracked wide open by Grand Theft Auto ... again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jan 2007 07:55:00 EST. There was a scare back in August, when Sony approached the coder with some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/03/devhook-reeled-in-by-sony/">legal action</a>. Now, nearly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/07/firmware-2-80-decrypted/">three months after firmware 2.80 was decrypted</a>, a <a href="http://www.psp-hacks.com/2006/11/29/devhook-v050-released-with-fw-28x-emulation/">new version of DevHook</a> is available for the homebrewing crowd out there. The latest version allows you to run homebrew directly from emulated 2.82 firmware, so there's less need to messily switch between firmwares. The latest version also includes an enticing folder called "3.0," but that doesn't seem to be in effect... yet. With DevHook, you can run most modern legal games and whatever homebrew applications you already have. Once again, it seems like the emulated firmware is better than the real deal.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/30/devhook-updates-offers-2-82-emulation-on-1-50-psps/">DevHook updates, offers 2.82 emulation on 1.50 PSPs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 09:45:00 EST. Do they want to run <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/homebrew">homebrew</a>? Well, they better run out and get one, as Sony's been shipping new hardware that has the latest firmware, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/2.81">2.81</a> installed. As of now, there is no way of downgrading or running homebrew apps on a 2.81 PSP. To avoid this kind of system at the store, watch out for the letter L above the system's boxcode.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://psp3d.com/homepage-news/11880-psps-shipping-firmware-v2-81-a.html">PSP3D</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/17/2-81-now-pre-installed-in-new-systems/">2.81 now pre-installed in new systems</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Oct 2006 14:00:00 EST. We knew it was only going to be a matter of time before the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/20/downloads-spotted-at-tokyo-game-show/">downloadable game demos from Tokyo Game Show</a> found their way onto the internet for all of us to enjoy. The latest demo for you to download to the system is <em>Ape Escape Racer</em>. Although it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/24/tgs-06-every-psp-game-previewed/">didn't get the best previews</a>, this demo will let you make your own decision on the quality of the game. <strike>Unfortunately, you will need homebrew-destroying <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/07/firmware-2-81-now-available-via-network-update/">firmware 2.81</a> to run the demo. </strike>This updated file will work on firmware 2.80 and above.<br /><br />1. <strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/files/UCUS98655.zip">Download</a></strong> the demo ZIP file.<strong><br /></strong>2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file.<br />3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.<br />4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.<br />5. Copy <strong>UCUS98655 </strong>folder into the GAME directory.<strong><br /> </strong>

Although they <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/07/firmware-2-81-now-available-via-network-update/">just released 2.81</a> (to very little fanfare), the hacking community never seems more than a step or two behind. Firmware emulation has been an option for many people with 1.5 PSPs, as it gives them the flexibility of running all homebrew, while accessing the latest games and features of Sony's official firmware upgrades. Dark_AleX has <a href="http://dax.lan.st/">decrypted firmware 2.80</a>, which will theoretically allow those with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/devhook">DevHook</a> to emulate firmware 2.80. DevHook hasn't been updated to support the firmware, and with Sony <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/03/devhook-reeled-in-by-sony/">keeping a close eye on the program</a>, who knows how long it will take?<br />I'm assuming the talented homebrew community won't take long. Already, it appears that 2.81 can <em>also</em> be successfully decrypted using the same methods.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.psp-hacks.com/2006/09/07/280-decrypted/">PSP Hacks</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/07/firmware-2-80-decrypted/">Firmware 2.80 decrypted</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 13:00:00 EST. Looks like Sony's ready to counterattack against that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/libtiff">libtiff exploit</a> that's been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/05/no-gta-or-downgrading-needed-to-run-homebrew/">so helpful</a> to homebrewers over the past few days. The <a href="http://www.yourpsp.com/psp/psp.html#locale=en_gb&amp;section=homepage&amp;setlocale=true">European PSP site</a> has revealed text suggesting the impending release of firmware version 2.81. Most likely, it won't include any new functionality. However, I hope Sony will prepare a downloadable demo to coax us into upgrading, just because <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/demo">free game demos</a> are <em>always</em> yummy.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.shindakun.net/">steve</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/06/2-81-firmware-coming-soon/">2.81 firmware coming soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Sep 2006 15:45:00 EST.
