So here we are, with a list of 2011's top sellers on the PlayStation Network ... and we've got two lists dominated by one game from 1985, and one from 2010.

Speaking only in terms of full games, not "paid downloads" (like DLC packs for Black Ops) and PS Minis, the list is a hodgepodge of nostalgia-fueled favorites from yesteryear (like Tetris in its curiously lofty number one spot), and digitally distributed future-classics like Castle Crashers and Limbo, which ranked in at six and seven respectively. There's on important thread tying those together: none of those games launched in 2011.

When all digital sales are taken into account, however, the list becomes an entirely different beast, and the only actual game present within the top 10 is Angry Birds, of all things (a PS Mini). In fact, the three best-selling anythings on the PlayStation Network in 2011 were Black Ops DLC packs, followed closely by a cavalcade of FIFA Soccer 12 and MLB 11 sundries. At least the DLC came out in 2011! Hop past the break for the full breakdown of both lists, care of Game Informer.
Continue reading PSN's best selling games of 2011 list dominated by games not from 2011

PSN's best selling games of 2011 list dominated by games not from 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 15:30:00 EST. The top two spots in Japan's 2011 list of best-selling games are taken by a pair of Nintendo 3DS games: Mario Kart 7, with more than 1.6 million sold, and Super Mario 3D Land with more than 1.08 million sold. In third is Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri-G for 3DS, followed by 27 more titles for 3DS, DS PSP, Wii and PS3. These include From Software's Dark Souls and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII-2.

The game industry's December 2011 may have been down from the same month last year, but it hasn't brought down spirits at Microsoft. The Redmond-based Xbox 360 manufacturer capped off 2011 by having the number one console for twelve straight months, NPD data reveals.

In December, Microsoft sold more than 1.7 million consoles (déjà vu, anyone?) without brand-new hardware to help push it over the top like last year. Gamers spent $1.5 billion at retail on the Xbox 360 alone during December, and overall Microsoft's share of that $16 billion pie in 2011 came to $6.7 billion -- $2.1 billion on consoles, $4.6 billion on games and accessories.

During its annual (and, this year, final) CES sojourn, Microsoft revealed there are 66 million Xbox 360 consoles out in the world today. Based on the 2011 figures from the NPD, we'd say a lot of them are here in North America. But when will this month-to-month momentum slow down and make way for the impending next generation? Probably around the time we invent robots for boxing.
NPD: Xbox 360 earns $6.7 billion in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 20:30:00 EST. Two major UK video-game retailers, HMV and Game, saw a drop in sales over Christmas, prompting HMV to reconsider its investment in games as a whole, The Telegraph reports. HMV's gaming market share fell 16 percent over the holidays, while sales in music and DVDs saw no change; games now account for 20 percent of HMV's sales. Chief Executive Simon Fox said HMV may focus only on AAA titles in the future.

Game's Christmas retail sales were down 15 percent, while year-on-year it lost 13 percent in sales, GamesIndustry.biz says. Online sales rose 4 percent, and sales for the year ending January 2012 dropped 12 percent, less than the UK gaming market's total loss of 13 percent. Game recently closed 39 stores and is expected to have 550 in the UK by 2013, GamesIndustry notes. CEO Ian Shepherd is banking on the Wii U and PS Vita to revitalize sales in 2012.
UK game industry holiday snapshot suggests weakening retail sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 03:00:00 EST. Steam now hosts more than 40 million accounts and 1,800 games, and its 2011 year-over-year sales increased 100 percent for the seventh year in a row, Valve announced today with a ridiculously smug grin on its face (we assume). During the Holiday Sale, Steam clocked more than 5 million simultaneous users -- in perspective, that's easily more people than the entire population of Norway, all on Steam at the same time.

Steam served over 780 petabytes of data to gamers in 2011, more than doubling the amount delivered in 2010, Valve reported. More than 19 million items were traded in-game, Valve president Gabe Newell said, and he promised that more free-to-play titles will be launched in 2012 to supplement the 18 Steam already hosts.

Newell hasn't forgotten about Big Picture Mode, Valve's attempt to infiltrate living rooms with a top-boxy device that will offer Steam via controller navigation on "more screens throughout the house." Newell said Valve is "preparing for the launch" of Big Picture Mode, so we're guessing we can expect to see something concrete by 2015.
Continue reading Steam sales increase 100 percent for the seventh straight year

Steam sales increase 100 percent for the seventh straight year originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 13:15:00 EST. The Japanese game market saw a significant dip in 2011, according to Enterbrain, as reported by Famitsu. The year saw a 2.4 percent increase in hardware sales -- up to ¥179,740 million ($2.3 billion) -- spurred by the 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The hardware bump, however wasn't enough to prevent a 14 percent drop in software sales, representing a total of ¥274,640 million ($3.5 billion). On the whole, the game market saw a sales decrease of eight percent.

The 3DS was the best selling console in 2011, with sales topping four million units. The PlayStation Vita, available in Japan since mid-December, managed to move over 400,000 units before the end of the year.
Japanese game market saw overall declines in 2011, 3DS was top seller originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 18:15:00 EST. You'll excuse our baffled aghast, but we just saw Facebook's most played games of 2011 list and were mesmerized by this list of stuff we've never heard of. Also, we're surprised that Disney-owned Playdom sits at the top of the list with Gardens of Time, while Zynga's myriad "Ville" offerings, "... with Friends" games, Empires & Allies, and Adventure World are instead scattered throughout the bottom nine.

EA's The Sims Social edges out Zynga as well for the number two spot, though neither Playdom nor EA can compare to Zynga's four entires on the top 10. According to Facebook, the list is put together by "looking at the top games on Facebook with more than 100,000 monthly active users and giving priority to those games with the highest user satisfaction scores."
Facebook's most popular games list topped by Playdom (which isn't Zynga) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 06:30:00 EST. The latest Ubisoft financial report for the first quarter of its 2012 fiscal year is a tough pill to swallow for everyone who loved Q Entertainment's stunning rhythm-shooter, Child of Eden. The company's sales for the quarter reached €103 million, a decline of 36.3% from the €161 million reported during the same period during FY 2011.

The quarter wasn't a total wash -- sales actually exceeded Ubisoft's expectations of €90 million thanks to strong back-catalog sales (thanks, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood!), successful digital titles like Outland and Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes, and the massive worldwide sales of Michael Jackson: The Experience. Still, in a perfect world, Ubisoft's financial report would just show the logo for Child of Eden, then a picture of Tetsuya Mizuguchi rolling around in an Olympic swimming pool filled with hundred-dollar bills.
Ubisoft Q1 sales down 36 percent from last year originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 15:00:00 EST. Considering the embarrassing regularity and bone-smashing severity with which the riders are ejected from their motorcycles, Trials might as well have been called ExitBike. The tricky test of speed, momentum and balance is set to return to Xbox Live Arcade this year with Trials Evolution, a sequel to two-million seller Trials HD.

Finnish developer Redlynx claims that it took its time in "carefully planning and developing" the follow-up before making today's announcement. "We listened carefully to all the feedback we received from the previous game and added it to our own vision of what the ultimate Trials game could be, coming up with a gamer's wish list of must-play features," said creative director Antti Ilvessuo.

Judging by the teaser trailer posted after the break, it seems gamers no longer want to be alone in leaning just a little too far over the handle bars.
Nintendo has just revealed a European localization for Monolith Soft's Wii RPG Xenoblade. A UK teaser site has just gone up for what is now called Xenoblade Chronicles, featuring (strangely) an untranslated trailer. What that trailer lacks in English text, it makes up for in imagery of impressive locales and big monsters, reminding us why we've been eager to hear news about this game for so long.

A press release was posted on the Nintendo Europe sites, and then removed, but not before NeoGAF user Vinterbird could capture it. According to the release, the game will be out in Europe this year, and will offer both English and Japanese voice options.

We hope this European announcement is the harbinger of a wider worldwide release, and that this isn't another Disaster: Day of Crisis situation in which an anticipated Monolith Soft-developed Wii game goes to Europe and stays there.
Continue reading Monolith Soft's Wii RPG Xenoblade localized this year -- for Europe

Monolith Soft's Wii RPG Xenoblade localized this year -- for Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. Sega Rally Online Arcade has made the trip from ratings board to release calendar in record time -- it's coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in 2011. According to the official announcement, Sega Rally Online Arcade is a new game "inspired" by Sega Rally Revo (2007) and the arcade-only Sega Rally 3, both of which were developed by Sega Racing Studio.

As the title subtly implies, online rally racing is a given. Other features, which couldn't be incorporated into the logo with any elegance whatsoever, include the 13 rally cars, Championship Battle and Time Attack modes, leaderboards and "a brand new achievement system."
Rayman Origins, a beautiful 2D adventure created within Ubisoft's UbiArt framework, was scheduled to launch on HD consoles by the end of this year. While the official website still believes that to be the case, it's now clear that the release has been delayed. Planned as an episodic series, Rayman Origins examines the mischievous beginnings of Michel Ancel's famous limber-yet-limbless hero, and his friendship with Globox, a boisterous frog-type ... thing.

Ubisoft has made no announcement regarding a delay, but a company representative confirmed to Joystiq that the first Origins episode would not make it out this year. (Obviously.)

Provided Rayman Origins doesn't vanish behind a veil of secrecy, Ancel fans should have a good year in 2011, which also promises a high-definition update of Beyond Good and Evil for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Gallery: Rayman Origins (XBLA, PSN)

Continue reading Rayman Origins a no-show for holiday 2010

Rayman Origins a no-show for holiday 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 17:50:00 EST. If you've ever set foot within the cacophonous, blood-encrusted hallways of Demon's Souls, you know that sure footing isn't always guaranteed. The only assurance you'll ever have is the one from the insidiously designed RPG's North American publisher, Atlus, which has pledged to keep online servers safe until the game's second anniversary, coming up in October 2011. Before this announcement, servers weren't set to fall away until "at least" March 2011.

Of course, since this is Demon's Souls, the kindness of Atlus comes at a terrible cost. While you enjoy the continuing online features and a new, Pure White World Tendency event taking place from December 20 until the beginning of 2011, spare a thought for the children sitting in a Californian basement, dutifully turning the server cranks.
Continue reading Demon's Souls server operation extended until late 2011

Demon's Souls server operation extended until late 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 18:30:00 EST. Square Enix has decided to delay the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the ambitious cyberpunk shooter in development at Eidos Montréal. Originally scheduled for the first quarter of 2011, the Deus Ex launch has been pushed into the Japanese publisher's next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012. According to a corporate announcement, the delay will allow Eidos more time to "further polish" the project.

The demand for greater quality isn't unprompted, as the news came alongside a revision to the company's consolidated results forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011. Forecast net sales were lowered from 160 billion yen to 130 billion, and operating income is expected to drop from 20 billion yen to 8 billion. Square Enix blamed weak sales performance from console games and "harsh market feedback" regarding a key title.

The title in question may be the lambasted MMO Final Fantasy XIV, which triggered a dramatic reorganization in development staff and an indefinite delay for the PlayStation 3 version.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution pushed out of Q1 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 06:00:00 EST. Sony has unleashed a barrage of MotorStorm Apocalypse news over on the official PlayStation blog. Revealed in a video posted after the break is a track called Skyline, which pits racers against each other while driving across the rooftops of a destroyed (and crumbling) city.

The clip also shows off a new Superbike vehicle, and lots more. The game will offer player customization in the form of both perks and cosmetic updates, a new photo mode for snapping shots mid-race, extensive PSN tie-in content including some PlayStation Plus exclusives and a new taunts / gestures system that will enable you to bug other riders online.

Sony also promises lots of DLC (including possibly a free island-themed track) and a series of developer diary videos in the weeks to come. The game's been given a launch target of Spring 2011, and a demo is planned for early next year. Is it weird that whenever we start to key in on a big Sony release, our biggest wonder is what KB will say about it?
Continue reading MotorStorm Apocalypse gets Superbikes, photo mode, demo in 2011

MotorStorm Apocalypse gets Superbikes, photo mode, demo in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 21:00:00 EST. Atlus PR and sales bard, Aram Jabbari, describes The Cursed Crusade as "a story of salvation and survival" set during the often unpleasant Middle Ages. "The game's main characters are not heroes; they're just men, susceptible to temptation, easily made to feel doubt and despair," Jabbari says, plucking a string (but in like, a sinister way). "The raw, gritty accuracy of many of the game's historical locations is sharply contrasted by Denz and Esteban's supernatural struggle to save their souls. Their affliction, the Templar's Curse, threatens to accelerate their descent into hell, burning their humanity away as it engulfs the space around them in demonic flame."

Apparent non-comedy troupe Denz and Esteban star in The Cursed Crusade, a new third-person action-adventure game coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It looks to be heavy on the melee combat, with Atlus and French developer Kylotonn (see: Speedball 2) promising a wide variety of weapons and ways to inflict critical flesh wounds. The curse that threatens to overwhelm Denz and Esteban also seems to grant them supernatural strengths -- including the anachronistic ability to fight cooperatively over the internet. According to Atlus, Esteban will be an AI-controlled character in the single-player mode.

No announcements have been made regarding a North American release of this game.

Concurrent with this announcement, Sony has released an English version of the TGS trailer -- which is worthwhile, since the trailer is almost all text. You'll find that after the break, and you can see more screens at the PlayStation Blog.
Continue reading Tokyo Jungle invades European PSN next year

Tokyo Jungle invades European PSN next year originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 30 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. Gaming analyst Michael Pachter expects good things from the industry in 2011, but not without a little sacrifice from the Big Three. Pach Attack prognosticated to Industry Gamers that "a $50 console price cut across the board will impact software sales by a positive 5 percent." (He expects to see an additional market boost from sales of 3DS, as well as Move and Kinect products.) Pachter further predicted the Xbox 360 to be the first to fall in price at some point during the spring of next year.

When questioned, competing analysts The Joystiq Consortium had a far more monolithic picture of 2011 to paint, saying, "It's basically just going to be Minecraft." Time will tell, we suppose.
Pachter predicts $50 price cuts in 2011, Xbox first to drop originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 16:55:00 EST. Here's more proof that Ubisoft hasn't forgotten the Beyond Good & Evil franchise: The company is in the process of remastering the Michel Ancel-directed adventure classic for release in 2011 on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. According to IGN, Beyond Good & Evil HD will run at 1080p resolution and feature updated character models, higher-resolution textures and a remastered soundtrack, along with Trophies and Achievements.

Beyond Good & Evil was first released on Gamecube, Xbox, PS2 and PC in 2003. Like Okami, it is considered by fans to be one of the best Zelda games ... that, you know, isn't actually a Legend of Zelda game.
Beyond Good & Evil HD coming to PSN, XBLA in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 05:08:00 EST. But we also vainly hoped the company would alter the title for the American version to something that makes even the slightest bit of sense. No such luck.

Square Enix announced that DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY will arrive on PSP in North America sometime next year, bringing new characters (Kain, Tifa, and Lightning, so far), a playable Chaos storyline, and a new, RPG-style mode along with it. We now hope it'll be available on PSN so we don't have to look another human being in the face when we buy something called DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY. Why would you do this to your own game, Square Enix? If you don't want anyone to buy it, just don't release it.

Gallery: Dissidia: Duodecim Final Fantasy

Continue reading DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY coming to North America, name intact

DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY coming to North America, name intact originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 12:30:00 EST. Are you ready, Steef? Just Add Water is working on a high-definition remake of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. The Gravity Crash developer announced the project earlier today, highlighting it as the first in a "long and fruitful relationship" with the original game's developer, Oddworld Inhabitants. "Having a chance to update the great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too," added Just Add Water MD Stewart Gilray.

Set for release on PlayStation Network during Easter next year, the PS3 remake of Stranger's Wrath will offer enhanced 720p visuals, more detailed character models, remastered dialogue, PlayStation Move support and "additional bonus material."

When it launched on Xbox in January 2005, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was notable for being, well, a really bizarre first-person shooter. It placed the franchise's environmental missive inside a wild and weird Western aesthetic, and replaced ammunition with ravenous fuzzballs. An EA-developed port for PlayStation 2 never made it to stores.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath remake coming to PS3 in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Sep 2010 07:17:00 EST. According to the press release, Ace Combat Assault Horizon "intensifies the franchise, escalating combat to the next level with aircraft that are literally torn apart, spewing oil and debris across the sky."
This game represents a "rebirth of our premiere franchise," said Project Aces producer Kazutoki Kono. What better way to bring it back than with airplane mutilation? The trailer (after the break) also makes references to real-world locations like Miami, and cites GeoEye map data, suggesting that this game is following the flight path set forth by the PSP's Joint Assault. Also, there's a shoutout to Namco Bandai's Twitter account for some reason.
Continue reading Ace Combat returns to consoles with the plane-wrecking Assault Horizon

Ace Combat returns to consoles with the plane-wrecking Assault Horizon originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Aug 2010 18:45:00 EST. While "Red River" doesn't sound nearly as exciting as "Dragon Rising," perhaps the very fact that there's more Flashpoint on the way is exciting to those disappointed by the end of Dragon Rising DLC. There's also the promise of new cooperative modes and new classes.

The press release also details the setting for the new shooter: "a deadly new battlefield set in the remote yet beautiful country of Tajikistan along the Vakhsh River." Guess we're going to have to make that military shooter about the escalation of the OU/Texas football rivalry ourselves.
It appears that we'll see another addition to the Operation Flashpoint series in the coming year, with Operation Flashpoint: Red River being outed recently by OXM UK (via CVG). Other than revealing the title, OXM UK editor John Hicks also noted that the game is a sequel to last year's Dragon Rising and feels "tighter, more focused" than the last game. Presumably, Red River is being developed by Codemasters' Southam studio, as revealed by Codies VP Gavin Cheshire just last week.

Unfortunately, no other details are known on the title -- other than a wide open "2011" intended release window -- so we'll have to assume the "Red River" name is in reference to a secret war fought on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, near the Red River of the North. No? Perhaps a shadow insurgency on the Red River Cereal plant? Fine -- we give up then! If you want to know more about the game for real real, the upcoming issue of OXM UK will have all the details.
Operation Flashpoint: Red River revealed in upcoming OXM originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 31 Jul 2010 11:30:00 EST. With Hothead Games having ceased work on Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 3 (and finishing up DeathSpank), it's ready to pursue a brand new project: Swarm, a game which stars some seemingly dull-witted blue things. The introductory trailer (which you can find beyond the break) gives us a Lemmings vibe, with just a touch of sadism.

Players must take control of 50 Swarmites, navigating them through "gauntlets of death and destruction," all in the search of precious DNA. You'll also need to ensure that at least one Swarmite survives in order to make use of that collected life goo. Look for Swarm in 2011, when it'll be available "across multiple platforms."
Continue reading Hothead Games unleashes Swarm in 2011

Hothead Games unleashes Swarm in 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 12:38:00 EST. Level-5's White Knight Chronicles may have had some issues, but it's not stopping the company from pursuing a sequel, set to be released in Japan next month. It would seem the series is also extending to Sony's PSP, as the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu (via Andriasang) reveals a PSP entry set for a 2011 launch.

While White Knight Chronicles 2 wraps up the story of Leonard and the events set in motion by the first game, the PSP game will introduce a new story and characters. "And then, to a new world," the text on the teaser page announces. "White Knight Chronicles New Project. This is how it all starts, folks. In today's Ubisoft investor's briefing, CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier has been pushed from its initial Holiday 2010 launch window. "Due to a very competitive environment, we decided to move the game out of the Christmas quarter, and into the March quarter," Guillemot explained. "It will also provide additional time to our development teams to realize their vision," he added.

We don't know about you guys, but we're flashing back to last year, when every release in November and December was pushed back a few months for those very reasons. If you're hoping to check out Future Soldier in the foreseeable future, you better make your way to E3 2010, where the game will be showcased to the public for the very first time.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier delayed into 'March quarter' 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 May 2010 13:20:00 EST. The last time anything newish was released from the franchise was last year's DS port of the first game.

Though bitComposer has taken over development on the series, the announcement doesn't make it sound like the new studio plans to make drastic changes to the Jagged Alliance formula: "Jagged Alliance 3 will build on the strengths of its famous predecessors and, set against the backdrop of a gripping story, will again deliver the much-loved combo of turn-based strategy gameplay with roleplay elements."
We were surprised earlier this year to learn Spicy Horse was creating a follow-up to American McGee's dark take on Alice in Wonderland, which itself seemed like a concept so common and benign in today's market as to almost be kind of adorable. But consider us officially shocked after watching this video on the game's teaser site. It actually has us interested in the project -- apparently due in 2011.

If the creepy stop-motion animation is indicative of the final product's look we'll be more than a little intrigued; a notion surprising enough to make us wonder if we've been hitting the Caterpillar's hookah just a bit too hard.
Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli had some major statements to make about the future of console development and his company's proprietary engine, CryENGINE 3. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Yerli said, "If I want to make a next-gen launch title I could do that by pushing the boundaries of the engine," referencing CryENGINE 3 as the bridge between generations. Expounding on the reasoning behind this, Yerli said, "If it's for PS3 you can develop on the PS3 and you're done with it ... the next hardware comes along you have to start again. Whatever happens, we don't want developers to be the victims of change and repositioning."

Crytek has stated before that it expects the next-gen by 2011 -- a predicition it's not alone in making -- but never before has it made these type of assertions with such authority. Citing talks with Microsoft and Sony, Yerli says, "We wanted to make an engine that's ready for next-gen inherently. Writing the driver layers for the next PlayStation or next Xbox will be quite simple for us." So what you're saying is Crysis 2 will be coming packed-in with the X-Station 2160? Count us in!

[Thanks, Mocib]
Crytek says Cry Engine 3 ready for next-gen, working very closely with Microsoft and Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. It's a race that won't be finished until 2011, according to Chris Deering (former head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe), but he's already calling it a tie between Sony and Nintendo. Keep in mind, this was after week ending numbers came out showing over 40,000 Wii units sold in Japan, with the PS3 a distant 9,500 units sold. So, clearly there's a lot to do in three years.

Deering arrived at these figures "by triangulating Screen Digest and IDG data. He also took into account factors such as the growth of hi-def and the grey gamer market, the emergence of new game engines and increasing ubiquity of wi-fi access" and we imagine he probably tried out runestones, tarot cards, and a ouija board just to be safe.

What's impressive are the sheer numbers alone. He predicts that by 2011 both Sony and Nintendo will have sold 230 million total machines each (Sony: PS3 + PS2 + PSP; Nintendo: Wii + DS), and that the Xbox 360 will have reached a user base of 40 million. The only thing is, the 360 has already reached the 20 million mark, so he thinks it'll continue on that track for the next three years at exactly the same pace, due to the "set-top box hi-def phenomenon."

He also concludes that the number of potential gamers will reach 2.5 billion due to the amounts of consoles, computers, and mobile phones sold, to which we say... isn't everyone a potential gamer?
In a hardware sales photo finish, it's a Sony Nintendo tie! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 16:45:00 EST. We do the same thing, but when they do it, they use specific numbers, and people believe them. Their craziest number? They are saying that in the distant future of 2011, 89% of Japanese households will own a DS.

They predict that by 2011, the DS will have an install base of 112 million systems worldwide, versus the PSP's 67 million. To put that in perspective, the Playstation sold 102 million units, the GBA has sold 79 million, and the NES sold 61 million.
