Now, if you want to be a leader of a country, you need to be smart - a student of conquest and diplomacy - and this weekend you can study up in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/civilization-v"><em>Civilization V</em></a> on Steam, free of charge.<br /><br />You can install the game through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> and play until you bring the world around to your type of thinking, up until 1pm PT on Sunday. And if you like <em>Civilization V</em>, it just so happens you can also purchase it at a 75% discount this weekend, which brings the price down to $7.49. A good ruler must <em>also</em> be able to spot a good bit of marketing. The expansion, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/05/civilization-5-gods-and-kings-finds-religion-release-date-on-j/">Gods and Kings</a>, is a little more than a month away, after all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/my-liege-civilization-v-is-free-to-play-on-steam-this-weekend/">My liege, Civilization V is free to play on Steam this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 04:00:00 EST. Answering fan-submitted twitter questions on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/05/18/borderlands-2-your-questions-answered/#utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PSBlog+%28PlayStation.Blog%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">PlayStation Blog</a>, Charles addressed several technical problems suffered by <em>Borderlands</em> - by and large, the news is positive. <br /><br />Voice chat issues that plagued the first game, for instance, are currently being worked on and the system "will be working for everyone when the game launches." Charles also said that while it's "too early for me to give any final numbers," <em>Borderland 2</em>'s framerate will "see an improvement over the first game."<br /><br />He also mentioned the upgraded user interfaces we've <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/co-opinion-slaughtering-skags-in-borderlands-2/">talked about before</a>, and that players will now automatically pick up ammo and currency dropped by felled villains: "There's a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Having said that, the best way to know what a gun does is to use it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/borderlands-2-fixes-voice-chat-framerate-issues-from-first-game/">Borderlands 2 fixes voice chat, framerate issues from first game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 21:00:00 EST. Rather than awarding vast sums of cash to the first person to throw a perfect game in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mlb-2k12"><em>MLB 2K12</em></a>, this year the competition introduced a new setup: a period of time where everyone could try to pitch a perfect game, and a complex algorithm judging the results and assigning scores. Taking a lower-rated pitcher against a great squad, for example, gives you more points.<br /><br />The competition is closed and <a href="http://2ksports.com/perfectclub">the final eight have been chosen</a>, but one of the finalists has been accused of employing an exploit that allowed him to change the lineups on both teams prior to the start of the game, allegedly yielding a much higher score than his peers and allowing him to crack the top eight. <a href="http://kotaku.com/5907735/how-mlb-2k12s-huge-loophole-left-a-million+dollar-prize-exposed-to-cheating">Kotaku</a> has several images of supposed text messages between William Haff, the accused, and Scott Young, the individual who claimed he belongs in the top eight (he ended up in tenth) because others used the exploit to overtake him.<br /><br />The only problem is that a lot of the evidence is dependent on screen grabs of text messages - something anybody with a computer can create easily. However, Kotaku's Owen Good says he called Haff, who was apparently a bit dodgy when questioned yet assured he didn't break any of the official rules.<br /><br />We've reached out to 2K Games for comment, and to find out whether or not this controversy will affect the remainder of this year's festivities, or any future contests.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/04/report-mlb-2k12-perfect-game-million-dollar-challenge-ends-with/">Report: MLB 2K12 Perfect Game Million Dollar Challenge ends with accusations of cheating</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 May 2012 21:00:00 EST. Levine takes those words to heart in his own creative direction, and before building any terrifying monsters, he makes sure Irrational develops a rich, empathetic backstory that places each of the deformed, viciously homicidal creatures in routine settings, where they perform the most base of actions: contributing to society, petting a dog, relaxing, mourning.<br /><br />Four Irrational members - Levine, art director Nate Wells, lead artist Shawn Robertson, and sound man Pat Balthrop - gave the PAX audience a glimpse into the secret lives and creation of five major <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bioshock-infinite"><em>BioShock Infinite</em></a> villains: the Motorized Patriot, Handyman, Siren, Boys of Silence and Songbird.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/an-irrational-fear-of-monsters/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>An Irrational fear of monsters</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/an-irrational-fear-of-monsters/">An Irrational fear of monsters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 15:00:00 EST. Character animator Alex O'Dwyer is an employee at Rockstar North, according to both <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=73340953&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=8IeI&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=2be6a65a-3e9f-4413-a832-ef56d952f128-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=3&amp;goback=%2Efps_PBCK_*1_Alex_O%27Dwyer_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&amp;pvs=ps&amp;trk=pp_profile_name_link">his LinkedIn page</a> and <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6vwjTe7AMPUN3JQV25idHlRQ3VhY1ZRQURnYl8zQQ/edit?pli=1">his CV</a>, and he seems to think that <em>Grand Theft Auto V</em> will launch this October.<br /><br />As seen in the image above, O'Dwyer's CV puts <em>GTA V</em>'s launch window firmly in the holiday season - not exactly a bizarre concept considering Rockstar's history of launching GTA titles during the holidays (with the exception of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-iv"><em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em></a>, that is). It would also put sufficient time between Rockstar's May launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/max-payne-3"><em>Max Payne 3</em></a>, but would <em>totally</em> buck the trend of Rockstar releasing more than one title in any given year. It's worth noting that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, may not be keen on launching <em>GTA V</em> in the same month as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bioshock-infinite"><em>BioShock Infinite</em></a>.<br /><br />Regardless, we've reached out to Rockstar and O'Dwyer for comment, but, well ... it's Easter. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. For now, we're putting this squarely in the "rumor" column.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Mr. O'Dwyer's CV was pulled down. We still haven't heard from Rockstar, nor have we heard from Mr. O'Dwyer regarding the date.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rockstar-north-employee-cv-gives-grand-theft-auto-v-an-october-l/">Rockstar North employee CV gives Grand Theft Auto V an October launch window [update: CV pulled]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 12:45:00 EST. The commentary team in <em>Major League Baseball 2K12</em>, Steve Phillips, Gary Thorne, and John Kruk even spend time talking about it when he's on the mound, throwing strikes. Yes, dialogue was recorded specifically to discuss the pitcher's facial hair -- and yet Axford's player model is clean-shaven with some average-joe sideburns.</font><br /> <br /> <font face="Arial"> Like Axford's mustache, something feels like it's missing from <em>MLB 2K12</em>, as if it were a rough version of what it could potentially become. Transitions between player animations feel jarring, fielders especially. In one instance, Chicago Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano gloved a ball at the wall down the third base line. He then proceeded to run in place for seven steps before turning and rocketing the ball to second base, where the runner was already safe. Instances like these pop up in every game, in which fielders in particular look stiff and sluggish, then take a few extra steps between their throws.</font></font></font><br /> <div style="text-align: left; "> <font class="Apple-style-span" color="#000000"><font class="Apple-style-span" color="#000000"><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/">MLB 2K12</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/#4885391"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/mlb-0000_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/#4885392"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/mlb-xenon-0010_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/#4885393"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/mlb-xenon-0011_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/#4885394"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/mlb-xenon-0058_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mlb-2k12/#4885396"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/mlb-ps3-0030_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></font></font></div></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/mlb-2k12-review-grounding-into-a-double-play/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MLB 2K12 Review: Grounding into a double play</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/mlb-2k12-review-grounding-into-a-double-play/">MLB 2K12 Review: Grounding into a double play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 18:30:00 EST. He also noted that diehard <em>Civilization 4</em> players complained there was a lack of depth in the gameplay, which is why religion, diplomacy and combat were added or overhauled. Finally, the combat tech tree doesn't have awkward dead ends anymore. Crossbows can now become gatling gunners, which then become machine gunners.<br /><br />Producer Dennis Shirk echoed Beach, saying the religion, espionage and combat mechanics were the focus of change. Specific changes affect certain naval units, which now have "melee" abilities that allow them to invade cities after significant bombardment. There's also more flexibility in stacking units, though don't expect the classic "stack of doom" to return. Finally, espionage is handled through one screen with no actual units on the board, streamlining the process of cost and consequence.<br /><br />The expansion includes 27 new units, 13 new buildings and nine new Wonders, which Firaxis didn't describe further at this event. The expansion is expected to launch in late spring, sometime "before the kids get out of school." Study comes first, kids!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/civilization-5-gods-and-kings-devs-discuss-community-driven-cha/">Civilization 5: Gods and Kings devs discuss community-driven changes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 10:00:00 EST. Take-Two revealed as much this morning in a PR missive which also detailed the "Premium Edition" of the third-person shooter. It will feature a variety of multiplayer bonus content to folks who pre-order the game from "participating retailers" (none are listed, but we're thinking places like GameStop and Amazon are fair bets).<br /><br />Perhaps "Premium Edition" doesn't sound militaristic enough for you? Thankfully, Take-Two <em>totally</em> thought of that, which is why part the premium edition gives access to the "FUBAR pack," containing various multiplayer customization options ("unique and visually distinct items). Additionally, premium content includes an AK-47 unlock and an Officer Class promotion (which confers "several team-based advantages") at rank one, as well as double XP for the first week of online play.<br /><br />2K Games producer Denby Grace openly calls out the unbalance in this pre-order scheme, saying "People who pre-order the game are going to have an immediate advantage in the multiplayer mode." There's also nine new civilizations, including Carthage, the Netherlands and the Celts. Along with two new types of city-states: mercantile and religious.<br /><br />Scenarios include the medieval period, the fall of the Rome and the (<em>very cool sounding</em>) Empires of the Smoky Skies, "a Victorian science-fiction scenario."Oooh!<br /><br />Most importantly, however, is the return of religion and the salvation or subjugation of the populace through its means. As players enter the Renaissance, spies can be unlocked to change the course of history through surveillance, theft and the always good fun of a coup. Sounds like a missed opportunity for an Assassin's Creed crossover if you ask us.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-v-gods-and-kings/">Civilization V: Gods and Kings</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-v-gods-and-kings/#4824512"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/civexpansion1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-v-gods-and-kings/#4824510"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/1371722screen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-v-gods-and-kings/#4824511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/02/1371727ingamepacal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/civilization-5-gods-and-kings-expansion-announced-available-lat/">Civilization 5: Gods &amp; Kings expansion announced, available 'late spring 2012'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Feb 2012 08:30:00 EST. When it comes to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mlb-2k12"><em>MLB 2K12</em></a> and the franchise's previous installments, I found out I tend to telegraph my throws. When I'm in a pitcher's count, usually a 1-2, I tend to serve up fastballs right on the batter's hands. I like to throw my sliders low and inside. I'm not afraid to throw a circle change into the dirt.<br /><br />As much as my fellow humans have allowed me to get away with these practices, <em>MLB 2K12</em>'s AI refused to cut me any slack. 2K's latest baseball simulation wants to make me a better pitcher.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/getting-schooled-in-mlb-2k12/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Getting schooled in MLB 2K12</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/14/getting-schooled-in-mlb-2k12/">Getting schooled in MLB 2K12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 16:30:00 EST. Good thing 2K Games has come to the rescue by adding more sports to our sports!<br /><br />When <em>MLB 2K12</em> launches in March, you'll be able to pick it up for the annual asking price of $60. If you spend $10 more, you can snag a combo pack including NBA 2K12, a game we're totally comfortable telling you is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/07/nba-2k12-review/">not too shabby</a>. Outside of the inclusion of NBA 2K12, there are no differences between the separate SKUs.<br /><br />2K Games has also announced the return of the annual perfect game pitching challenge, awarding one lucky virtual hurler (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/09/pro-wrestler-pitches-first-known-perfect-mlb-2k11-game-wins-not/">professional wrestler</a> or not) a cool $1 million check. Hit the break for more details on this year's contest.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/buy-mlb-2k12-alone-or-bundled-with-nba-2k12/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buy MLB 2K12 alone or bundled with NBA 2K12</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/09/buy-mlb-2k12-alone-or-bundled-with-nba-2k12/">Buy MLB 2K12 alone or bundled with NBA 2K12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 05:15:00 EST. Some may employ <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/piracy">unscrupulous means</a> to whet their appetite, but you won't have to do the same for a free taste of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-darkness-2"><em>The Darkness 2</em></a>.<br /><br />Gaikai has added the demo to its list of streaming titles, joining the ranks of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/10/gaikai-powers-streaming-dead-rising-2-demo/"><em>Dead Rising 2</em></a>, <em>Orcs Must Die!</em>, <em>The Witcher 2</em>, <em>Spore</em> and others. Such is the new preview provided by Game Informer, describing the turn-based steps and tactical placement of a three-person squad assaulting a team of Mutons, told through in-game screens.<br /><br />The piece outs a perk for the sniper, who earns "Damn Good Ground" after grappling to the top of the gas-station canopy, and the "Run &amp; Gun" ability for the Assault soldier, which allows her to run across the diner's roof and still open fire at the end of her turn. Firaxis has yet to release video footage of this fall's XCOM game, but if you scroll really fast through <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/01/26/advanced-tactics-exploring-xcom-39-s-combat-part-1.aspx">these</a> pictures, it's almost like a stop-motion movie. <em>Almost</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/26/xcom-enemy-unknown-shares-its-gas-station-strategy/">XCOM: Enemy Unknown shares its gas-station strategy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 15:10:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/bioshock-infinite"><em>BioShock Infinite</em></a> is gonna hurt you like it's 1999. Developer Irrational Games announced the "1999 Mode" for the upcoming RPG <em>slash</em> FPS this morning, and it appears to go beyond just messing with health stats for a more challenging game experience.<br />
<br />
<span class="ccbnTxt">"I'm an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me</span><span class="ccbnTxt">," said Irrational's creative director Ken Levine. "</span><span class="ccbnTxt">So we went straight to the horse's mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games."<br />
<br />
Levine continued, "94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their <i>BioShock</i> gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better<i>.</i>"<br />
<br />
The 1999 Mode will include unnamed tweaks and features that won't exist in the standard <em>BioSchock Infinite</em> experience. </span>It will also "<span class="ccbnTxt">feature demanding weapon, power, and health management," along with a "Game Over" screen if the player lacks the resources for a respawn.</span> The company is unlikely to cover incidental damages to property caused by playing 1999 Mode.<br />
<br />
For a look at a roughed up version of Elizabeth from the newly revealed mode, head past the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/bioshock-infinite-to-include-tougher-1999-mode/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioShock Infinite to include tougher '1999 Mode'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/bioshock-infinite-to-include-tougher-1999-mode/">BioShock Infinite to include tougher '1999 Mode'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/max-payne-3"><em>Max Payne 3</em></a> arrives at retail later this year, its main protagonist will be equipped especially well for handling the flood of dudes shooting bullets at him over the course of the game's globetrotting campaign. After an exhaustive process of ... asking people to send in headshots and come to auditions, Gearbox has found its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/gearbox-seeks-live-action-lilith/">real-world Lilith analog</a> for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/borderlands-2"><em>Borderlands 2</em></a> promotional events. Let's just scrutinize the beauty above, shall we?<br />

Soldier with obviously auto-generated Russian name? Check. Hit <em>and</em> critical hit percentage chances? Yup. Aim and range bonus stats? Oh, yes. And, upon very close observation, old-school X-COM fans may notice one other feature: Sweet, sweet <em>hope</em>. Do you want an evil spirit bound to you for the rest of your existence? How do you <em>really</em> know? If only the forces of evil got together and decided to offer some kind of pilot program.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, in this day and age of video games about evil things, we have demos. 2K Games is set to offer an early taste of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-darkness-2"><em>The Darkness 2</em></a>, starting with Xbox Live Gold subscribers next week, January 17. PC and PS3 users will be able to sample it on January 24. PS3 users in Asia/Pacific and Europe regions will have to wait an additional day, until January 25.<br />

2K didn't offer any details on the contents of the demo, so we just hope it helps us gauge whether we're going to pressure our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/the-darkness-2-gets-4-player-co-op-mode-in-vendettas-we-count/">friends</a> into buying it -- not to mention our tolerance level when it comes to evil hissing things and guys talking in thick, wiseguy accents.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/11/the-darkness-2-demo-creeps-toward-xbox-live-psn-and-pc-later-th/">The Darkness 2 demo creeps toward Xbox Live, PSN and PC later this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 23:59:00 EST. If you have a little bit of spare change and a lot of free time, Amazon has quite a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000716161">deal</a> for you. The retailer's deal of the week offers both <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/civilization-4"><em>Civilization IV</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/civilization-5"><em>Civilization V</em></a> at a hefty discount. Either game can be had for a mere $9.<br />

Looks like we were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/05/xcom-enemy-unknown-returns-to-strategy-genre-thanks-to-firaxis/">right again</a> -- Firaxis' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/xcom-enemy-unknown/"><em>XCOM: Enemy Unknown</em></a> isn't a remake of the original game, but is more of a re-imagining, Firaxis told <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/01/09/first-screens-and-details-of-xcom-enemy-unknown.aspx">Game Informer</a>. <em>Enemy Unknown</em> will mix real-time strategy on a global scale with turn-based combat, making it less of an RTS in the classic sense, Firaxis said.<br />
<br />
Strategically, players will handle all the holistic aspects of conducting extra-terrestrial warfare, including directing research into alien technology, mollifying nations worldwide to secure funding, attacking UFOs with jet fighters, leveling up soldiers, recruiting new ones and directing the Skyranger transport to battle aliens on the ground.<br />
<br />
<em>Enemy Unknown</em> isn't copying the functions of the 1994 original -- soldiers will have different stats, for example -- and it gets rid of much of the "tedium and uninteresting mechanics," while keeping gameplay challenging, Firaxis said. <em>Enemy Unknown</em> takes place in the thick of the alien invasion of Earth, while 2K Marin's first-person shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/xcom">XCOM</a> </em>covers the first alien attacks on the US. This is interesting, considering <em>Enemy Unknown </em>may end up launching <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/08/xcom-delayed-beyond-q1-2012/"><em>before </em></a>2K Marin's title.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-darkness-2">The Darkness 2</a></em> is available right this very second for pre-order on <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/67370/">Steam</a> for $49.99, with a free upgrade to the limited edition included. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/the-darkness-2-spawns-pre-order-bonuses/">Remember</a>: 2K Games is offering this same deal to all pre-orders, from any retailer, which kind of makes the Limited Edition like the Normal Edition, and then anyone who buys it after release gets the Sub-Normal Edition. If that's how you want to view the world, that is.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/05/the-darkness-2-breaks-off-a-pre-order-bonus-on-steam-starting-to/">The Darkness 2 breaks off a pre-order bonus on Steam starting today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 22:15:00 EST.
