The word "Ultimate" really gets thrown around a bit much in retail circles -- for instance, in our minds, the "Ultimate Blu-ray Movie Kit" would possess every Blu-ray movie ever made, a PS3 Slim, a machine that somehow produced delicious sandwiches, and a date with which to watch the aforementioned films. The date would also have to hate sandwiches, because -- hey, hands off, those are our sandwiches.

Sadly, Australia's recently released "PS3 Ultimate Blu-ray Movie Kit" doesn't include any of those things -- rather, the $60 AUD (or $51 U.S.) bundle only comes with a PS3 remote and two films. Both of the two currently available bundles come with 300, but their second films vary -- one includes 10,000 B.C., while the other comes with Batman Begins. If you're having a hard time choosing between the two, then you should probably get out of our sight and never come back.

[Via Engadget]
Australia's PS3 Ultimate Blu-ray Movie Kit is only kind of ultimate originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 22:00:00 EST. Ubisoft has purchased Hybride Technologies, the Montreal-based visual effects studio behind several commercial, television and film projects; the studio is best known for its work on the films Spy Kids, 300 and Sin City. Ubi CEO Yves Guillemot says the acquisition is part of the company's plans to extend its brands to other forms of entertainment.

Hybride and Ubisoft will move forward by sharing technology and developing tools for video games and visual effects. The acquisition is initially expected to generate sales of 6 -7 million Euros. We're certainly curious to hear what the first game will be that uses Hybride's artists post-purchase in its production.
Ubisoft buys 300, Sin City effects studio originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST. We do not know who made this incredible fan art, but we want to know you. This Patapon piece is inspired by the blockbuster action movie, 300. Not only does the piece accurately recreate one of the film's most iconic moments, it does so with the blood-curling beat of the Patapon tribe: Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon.

Update: canecodesign is the artist. A treat so satisfying it'll make you bring back the once over used "this is Sparta!" phrase.

In celebration of the launch of the Video Marketplace to new markets, Microsoft and Warner Bros have partnered up to offer the movie 300 at a super discounted rate for 24 hours. Starting December 28th through the 29th, 300 will be available for rental in Europe for the try me price of 100 Microsoft points. Sparta screaming worthy, no? The tipster email doesn't detail whether the 100 point price tag applies to the SD or HD version and doesn't exactly outline which countries the discount will apply to. But a discounted viewing of 300 is a discounted viewing. Hopefully a little more info will roll in by next week and hopefully our Canadian friends will get in on a cheaper (fingers crossed) HD viewing of 300. Sparta lives!

[Thanks, Boff]
Europe: Next week brings a 300 for 100 rental offer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Dec 2007 14:30:00 EST. How much manpower is Hideo Kojima throwing at Metal Gear Solid 4 to ensure quality? Over 200, according to Kojima Productions' Ryan Payton. In an interview with Gamasutra, Payton noted how important the game is to Sony, remarking that "the way things are turning out, this could be the first 'must have' PlayStation 3 title on store shelves. Or, if not the first, then the second or the third."

For clarification, Payton said that the massive team are all working in the same location on the same title, making the size all the more impressive. He did note, however, that following the release of MGS4 the team size will likely get "a little bit leaner and meaner."

Although not confirmed, we suspect Kojima Productions currently has the following quote written above its front doors: "No retreat, no surrender. That is Kojima law. And by Kojima law, we will stand and fight...and die. A new age has begun: an age of freedom. And all will know, that 200 developers, gave their last breath to defend it!"
Metal Gear Solid 4 has over 200 developers originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 18:29:00 EST. Blu-ray is, once again, dominating over HD DVD. One film in particular - the new record holder for highest selling dual format HD movie - was recognized as being a huge boon for the format. 300 on Blu-Ray outsold its HD-DVD counterpart by a ratio of 2:1. Total sales now exceed 400,000 across both platforms. 300, in particular, resonated quite well with the PS3 demographic.

PS3 will also receive a firmware update in the future which will "boost its Blu-ray interactivity functionality." Hi-Def Digest thinks it might be be an upgrade which allows the PS3 to support Blu-Ray Profile Spec 1.1. Currently, many Blu-ray discs are crippled by the lack of Java interactivity. A simple firmware update should make Blu-ray even more competitive and give it access to high definition content that's been exclusive on HD DVD.

[Via N4G]
Blu-ray sales growing, PS3 getting interactivity update originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 11:30:00 EST. Since the Gears of War movie wants to be like 300, it should be no surprise that the EverQuest movie wants to be like 300 as well. In fact, they've hired 300 screenwriter Michael Gordon to try and bring some of his magic to the script. Hopefully that doesn't mean someone will be shouting "THIS! IS! EVERQUEST!" throughout the film.

Unlike Stuart Beattie, who is writing Gears, Gordon doesn't have an impressive set of credits to his name, other than 300. Couple that with the waning popularity of EverQuest every year, and the World of Warcraft film that is being readied, and it smells like a recipe for video store shelves and Netflix accounts.

However, we could be wrong and this could smash box office records, sweep the awards, and bring tears to millions of eyes around the world. We're just sayin' ...
Everquest movie moving forward (directly to video we presume) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 22:00:00 EST. According to Time Warner, 300 has quickly become the fastest selling high-def movie of all time, shifting more than a quarter million copies since its release a little over a week ago. The Spartan epic, easily outpaced The Departed and Casino Royale which both took a couple months to hit just 100,000 sold.

When broken down between format types, 65% of consumers picked up 300 on Blu-ray, while 300 on HD-DVD accounted for only 35% of the sales. According to the USA Today article, this mirrors sales for the year with Blu-ray handily trampling HD-DVD with solid 2:1 sales.

The HD-DVD cabal can pretend that PlayStation 3 sales don't impact the high-def format war (a point they try to make in every single press release they send out), but it's clear that they're wrong. The PS3 has made a huge impact on the ridiculous format war, and this latest piece of info just drives that home. The real question at this point isn't "Who will win?" but instead "How long until Universal and Toshiba just give up and go Blu?".
300 on Blu-ray sells a ton, 300 on HD-DVD... not that much originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 17:00:00 EST. X3F reader NitroFrost sent us the image above, in which you can behold the power of in-game advertising. The new ads apparently seemed to arrive at about the same time as the recently released downloadable content. As usual, seeing an ad like this makes us wonder how players actually feel about them. Frankly, it's hard for us to argue with 300's awesomeness (in the true sense of the word), but we're not sure that it adds to the experience. What say you, fanboys? Do ads ruin the experience? Does it depend on the product being advertised? What if it were Doritos or Sprite, for example)? Audio in particular is supposed to be amazingly bombastic and satisfying. The title has been one of the top-requested Blu-ray releases since it broke onto the scene earlier this year in all its muscly Spartan glory. Some other movies are coming out too, but come on -- nobody cares.

Here's the list anyway:

300

Shooter

Blue Planet (IMAX)

Roving Mars (IMAX)

See? Nothing else but 300. If the rest of the releases were Spartan children they would have never come back from the wilderness. That's right, Microsoft and Warner Bros. have partnered to create 300 (total) Xbox 360 Elites themed with 300 style blood splatter. Yup, they're hot. But before you get too excited know that these Elites will only be given away during a special movie screening at Petco field during Comic-Con, which means we have no chance at winning one of these. Oh well ... they are still sort of pretty, so feel free to check out additional pictures of the 300 themed Elite as well as the official Comic-Con Bringing it Home press release after the break. THIS. IS. A 300 THEMED ELITE!
Continue reading We want a bloody 300 themed Elite!

We want a bloody 300 themed Elite! originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 14:00:00 EST. Seriously. Movies making the transfer to video games need to stop somewhere. While we knew a game based on the amazingly fantastic testosterone-fest 300 was inevitable, we have no idea who thought making a game based on the torture/puzzle movies of the Saw universe made any sense at all. What's next, Hostel: The Game? That would be crap.

New publisher Brash Entertainment is paving the way, deciding to cater exclusively to games based off of movies, TV, or music licenses. They've already got 5 movie studios to support them, with over 12 projects underway including the two we've mentioned. Not Hostel, though. Not yet. We always wish every developer and publisher the best of luck, but this Brash Entertainment ... it deserves a slap. Unless movie/TV games start to show us something that doesn't suck, we've got nothing more to say. If they make 300 suck, that's it. No more movie games. Ever.
300 and Saw want you to "play beyond" their movies originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 12:30:00 EST. Say, your Wii's looking a little dusty. No, no, don't brush it off on our account, ours has seen better days too. Good news though: If a list of Wii games set for 2007 in Japan holds up for America, we may both soon need to invest in some cans of compressed air.

IGN unearthed this list of games that have been announced by Nintendo to be released in Japan this year; so many, in fact, that we broke a federal ban on 300 jokes to write our headline. So, we'll give you a few upfront, but you're going to have to jump to get the rest of the goodness.
What a fitting way to send off the 300 "This is Sparta!" gag by honoring one of the best gaming representations of the joke -- namely, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats.

Second place goes to Rooster Teeth and third place belongs to Slackerz. Thanks to everyone who voted; now that we've seen pretty much every noun possible as a replacement for "Sparta," any repeat of the gag would have to be really clever for us to consider it. (And no, you can't get away with simply replacing the subject and/or verb.) Be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!
Continue reading Readers pick the best webcomic: Koopa!

Readers pick the best webcomic: Koopa! originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Apr 2007 08:05:00 EST. [insert punchline here]!"

We here at Joystiq would like to extend a heartfelt word to the artists: "thanks, it was funny, but if we see another one we're going to throw ourselves into the bottomless pit, thank you very much." With these last two comics, we mark the end of a short era. Enjoy them this week, for you'll never see 300 again on the wrapup.

Now, with that bit of optimism out of the way, here are our picks for best gamings. Don't think the above is the payoff, either. The payoff is much better; after all, there's not enough beard in this panel for it to be the best part.

We're gonna start linking this every time the anti-Nintendo hordes descend and start screaming about the evil that is the Wii.
VG Cats: This is Mushroom Kingdom originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Apr 2007 16:10:00 EST. Remember when film critics said that the blockbuster spears-and-Spartans flick, 300, was "like a video game"? Though they didn't mean it as a compliment, that hasn't stopped investors from contributing "significantly more" than $150 million into a new video game startup being, uh, started up in part by Thomas Tull, the executive producer of 300! The company, called Brash Entertainment, isn't really interested in doing anything brash. Nope, they figure some licensed games is just what the market needs right now and where better to start than ... 300?

Sprinkled in with dreams of being one of the "biggest game studios in the country" are sage words of advice like, "The safest, most lucrative way to sell a video game is in tandem with some kind of movie that is already heavily marketed." Brash plans on creating 60 to 100 games in the next five years, including another game to capitalize on the box-office success 300 has enjoyed (the PSP game ain't cutting it, we guess). We certainly hope they don't show up in our industry with wide-eyed dreams of telling new and unique stories! Co-starter-upper Bert Ellis calms us, cooing, "They'll all be brands you'll know." Phew!

300 producer opens game startup, eyes 300 license ... loses eye originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 18:21:00 EST. Too bad you were right, readers: the critics are absolutely bashing this game. Hopefully, the movie will be able to hold up better than this critically blasted game:

Gamepro (45/100) hates that nostalgic feeling: "It's essentially a throwback to the days when movie-licensed games were always awful."

IGN (57/100) at least enjoyed the cutscenes: "The stylish cinematics are better than any single moment of gameplay and serve as the only reason to bother playing 300: March to Glory to its conclusion."

Game Informer (63/100) didn't find the game too bad, as long as you turn off your brain: "It's interesting that they called this 300, because that is about how many times you jam on the X button in the first minute and a half. Then again, there is something mindlessly appealing about beating up endless waves of dudes."

The poor reviews for the game won't hinder me from watching the upcoming movie. I mean, can they really mess that one up? I hope not.
Metareview: 300 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 02:00:00 EST. You have a chance at winning 1 of 300 copies of Crackdown, but to enter you must download and watch all five 300 clips. Each clip is roughly 50mbs and is exclusively downloadable from the XBLM. At the end of each clip will be a code, write down each code and enter the contest here. It's that easy and quite entertaining. Even if you don't care about the contest, you have to download and watch Clip #1 "No Prisoners! No Mercy!". The cinematography in that scene is amazing and should get you excited for this movie. And for the record, anytime we get to see a leg being hacked off in a violent manor we are instantly interested in seeing more.
Why? To start, it's based on a pretty interesting-looking film. Then, it seems to be coming to only one platform: the PSP. While I'm not complaining, it certainly is an interesting decision. This interview (after the cut) shows some of the gorier footage from the game, easily marking 300 as one of the most violent handheld games I've seen so far.

Of course, the lack of a second analog stick proved to be a challenge. The developers got around this by making a fixed camera, which hopefully will alleviate some of the problems faced by so many PSP games. Will they get it right? We'll find out soon enough.
Continue reading More questions about 300 answered

More questions about 300 answered originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 02:00:00 EST.
Frank Miller, the esteemed artist behind classics such as Sin City, Ronin, and the upcoming 300, doesn't really talk too much about games. When GameTrailers posted up new videos showing the legend talking about the upcoming PSP-exclusive, 300: March to Glory, my interest was piqued.

Unfortunately, while he doesn't reveal too much, his colleagues do. Check after the cut to see tons of new video, including footage from the game. 300 comes out later this month.
Continue reading Frank Miller talks 300, unleashes video storm

Frank Miller talks 300, unleashes video storm originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 13:30:00 EST. For the curious, a website devoted to the 300: March to Glory game has gone live. On the site you can find the trailer, screenshots, game features and weapon profiles. From going to the site, I learned that Wizard Magazine said the 300: March to Glory was "One of the 10 games you'll have to own in 2007 ...or you're better off dead." Strong praise indeed. Let's hope they actually played the game before making those comments. Anyone got this puppy in their "to buy" list? I know I do, but only because I don't want to die.

[Via IGN]
300 website goes live originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Feb 2007 15:00:00 EST. Based on the upcoming film inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel (a re-imagining of the historic Battle of Thermopylae), 300: March to Glory seems to be taking a number of cues from its Spartan predecessor God of War, including a fixed camera, blood-showering violence, and d-pad selected powers (or "battle skills"). Fittingly, the odds of 300 succeeding as God of War did are exceedingly slim, in turn, sparking the potential for a surprise hit.

300: March to Glory hits retail February 27.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
300 marching for glory on PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 17:16:00 EST.
In a roundtable discussion before the Wii's release, Nintendo designer Takayuki Shimamura declared that "in all of the endless testing which Nintendo has done on [Wii Sports bowling], no one has ever achieved a perfect score!" This factoid didn't last very long -- since the system's release dozens of players have posted YouTube videos of their own perfect games, complete with anti-climactic confetti endings.

But while this seemingly impressive feat has now become commonplace, another Wii Sports bowling challenge remains seemingly unachieved and practically unachievable. We're speaking of a perfect score in the "Power Throws" training game, which steadily increases the number of pins at the end of the lane from a base of 10 to a staggering 91 pins in the tenth frame. Their are 445 total pins to knock down, but the game doubles the frame score for each strike, making a score of 890 the perfect ideal.

Despite our best efforts, we could not find documented evidence of such a score online. The best we could find on YouTube was an 804, and even this impressive player used the well-known cheat to strike out on the last frame. A couple of players on EliteScores.com have claimed to max out the score, but neither submitted so much as a screenshot as proof. Gaming scoreboard Twin Galaxies doesn't even track the Power Throws minigame yet, probably because no one has bothered to send in a VHS tape of their achievement as per the rules.

So we're putting out a challenge to the Joystiq community. Can anyone out there achieve the holy grail of Wii Sports and get a perfect score in this difficult minigame? The first person to submit video evidence of the feat (without cheating!) will get a handsome Joystiq T-shirt and eternal Internet glory as their reward. Entries can be submitted using the tips submission page. Good luck!

[Update: The challenge has been met by Joystiq reader el moco, who sent in the below video to confirm the feat. Looks like 300 is going to attempt to fill that role for PSP gamers. The game is based on the trials of 300 Spartans that must go against a million Persians. Considering how you'll have to fight to the death, I think it's safe to say that we can expect a lot of killing. As Yahoo! Games explains, "There are showers of red blood and flying body parts."

Besides the gore, the game promises to deliver an action experience tailor-made for the PSP. The camera will be automatic, akin to God of War. By using "horde technology," the game will continue to shower you with enemies, although only about six will be on screen at all times. The developers intend to have their battle system have depth as well: "Enemies have conditions to beat and we give you the tools to do it. Then, the player needs to make choices on whom to attack first, what they want to do to the enemy, and then, pile on some other choices regarding health management and your rage.
