Microsoft at its world-conquering peak was a software company, growing fat on the ubiquity of Microsoft Office and Windows. Even today that's where its cash money blood comes from. A consumer product like the Xbox? What chance could it possibly have? Before Xbox hit shelves, that's what everyone thought. J Allard, the Xbox console line's pappy, knew different.

"Each generation of console has spawned new players, and there are new entrants virtually every generation, and there has been a new leader in every generation, and some that have persisted over multiple generations," said Allard back in 2000, nearly 18 months before Xbox came out. "I think that from Microsoft's point of view, we have to be in it for the long haul. This is not a one time thing. We really want to redefine Microsoft and make Microsoft an entertainment company. So our entrance strategy is divided between short-term focus, making the world's greatest console, but with an eye towards the future, so that we start building franchises and properties today that will endure over several console generations, as well as making investments in the hardware and the programs and our relationship with partners that will last over the next two decades, as we expand this medium to its full potential."

It worked. Thanks to hits like Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft firmly entrenched itself in the game console business enough to make the Xbox 360 a roaring success. The company stumbled in communicating Xbox One's place in the line's forward-thinking lineage, but that machine still has a strong audience heading into E3 2014. Hence why we're highlighting it in the penultimate week of our great E3 2014 giveaway.

Arcades rose and fell. Handhelds were dominated by a single company then marginalized by phones. Consoles rules economically but became more and more PC-like over time. Personal computers themselves, meanwhile, have been tidal over gaming's lifespan. Throughout the '80s, they were home to both arcade-inspired twitch fests and the medium's first lengthy experiences, but they were never as culturally dominant as the NES. In the '90s, PC gaming became the premiere field for technological advancement, pushing three-dimensional design long before living room boxes.

In the past fifteen years, PCs have risen to a new level of prominence. At the dawn of the HD console era, the industry's biggest players still banked on the strong earning power of consoles but increasingly supported PCs with their biggest games, sometimes with the best versions of those games. E3 break outs like BioShock, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Metro: Last Light, Far Cry 3, and many more have seen definitive versions appear not on consoles but on PCs. All the while, the rising tide of independent developers have flourished on PCs thanks to the ease of digital distribution. E3 conversation may still be dominated by which console maker won the show, but going into E3 2014, PC players are guaranteed to see something they like.

It's hard to believe that nearly a decade ago, we were staring at those early videos of Madden NFL 2006, our eyes refusing to believe what the first HD game console could pump out. Turned out our eyes were pretty smart, of course. Madden NFL 2006 definitively did not look like this on Xbox 360.

Forget that false first impression, though. When E3 2005 kicked off, Xbox 360 came out swinging with announcements for Gears of War, Dead Rising, surprises like Hironobu Sakaguchi's duo of Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon, and a bombshell Grand Theft Auto IV announcement. Microsoft made a definitive statement that day: Xbox 360's here to play. The console went on to redefine the competitive landscape of the gaming business. Nine years later, Xbox 360 is riding out its last strong days as a major competitor heading into an E3 where its descendant, Xbox One, has much to prove.

Let us ignore the fate of Xbox One in the third week of Joystiq's grand E3 2014 giveaway, and turn our heads back to the 360. Every Friday between now and the end of E3 2014, Joystiq is giving away 14 games. Each week we'll bundle a selection of games around a specific theme. Nintendo has a history of legendary E3 showings. There were exciting game announcements, but even more truly baffling performances. From Software's efforts to bring Dark Souls to PC in 2012 should have been met with excitement: A version of the cult hit for the "PC master race"? Praise the sun! Unfortunately, a combination of From Software's inexperience working on the platform and the game's last minute jump to PC led to an ugly port, which was devoid of even the simplest graphical customization options. It was a barebones port, which is all that Namco Bandai originally promised.

For Dark Souls 2, Namco Bandai promised "increased texture resolution and an enhanced frame rate option." The details are included in the PC version, I learned after spending some time with the port this weekend. The video options don't dive as deep as PC gamers often desire, but the upcoming version of the game does offer increased stability. While textures look sharper, however, Dark Souls 2 for PC isn't a colossal graphical leap ahead of the console versions already available.

Greatness awaits, or so those PlayStation 4 ads keep telling us. But apparently Greatness has had enough waiting, and it's time to see who can catch it first. Sony has posed 64 challenges to the PS4 community, asking them to capture and upload proof using the system's Share feature, the PlayStation Blog has revealed. Those who complete the challenges will have their name posted to the First to Greatness website, which Sony teases will offer a "cool new experience" once all 64 tasks have been completed.

The PlayStation Blog also claims that a remake of the PS4's "Perfect Day" ad is on its way, and this one will feature "many" of the uploaded firsts. If you need any instructions on how to pursue Greatness - not that you would, we're putting it out there just in case - the PS Blog and First to Greatness site have additional details.

The games entered were judged on qualities like innovation, the production quality, and the fun factor, and all of the entries were narrowed down to these 40, with 20 on each system. The final prize-winning games will be announced in a few weeks from now in early September.

The finalists come from developers all over the world, and include games like the zombie fighter RPG Dead Pixels, "fantasy flight game" Windhaven, and the electricity-powered puzzler, Super Volt. The final prizes in the competition include cash prizes and possible publishing agreements, but odds are that we'll see more than one of these titles make it out to public release after the competition, with or without Microsoft's involvement.
