Rumor has it that Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a> console will feature remote play through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/microsoft-buys-skype-plans-to-add-support-to-kinect-and-xbox-li/">Skype</a>, allowing someone to remotely take over gameplay on the local console directly from a Skype call. Either player may break the remote play session at any time.<br />
<br />
Supposedly the feature is in testing phase right now, though <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/24/4361974/the-xbox-one-can-talk-to-you-will-feature-remote-play">Polygon</a>'s source notes that certain details are still up in the air - like how long that individual can remotely play or whether they need to own the same game or not. During the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-reveal">Xbox reveal</a> event, Microsoft unveiled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-allows-group-skype-video-calls/">group Skype calls</a> using the Xbox One's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/next-gen-kinect-sensor-unveiled-for-xbox-one/">improved Kinect sensor</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/rumor-xbox-one-to-feature-skype-remote-play/">Rumor: Xbox One to feature Skype remote play</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 May 2013 13:45:00 EST. Microsoft has announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect-for-windows">Kinect for Windows</a> will receive the updated Kinect sensor shown at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-reveal">Xbox reveal event</a> for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/xbox-one">Xbox One</a>. The rub: it won't arrive until some time in 2014.<br />
<br />
We already knew Kinect for Windows would be updated with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/next-gen-kinect-coming-to-pc/">the new sensor</a> and a new software development kit (SDK). The improved Kinect sports a 1080p RGB camera, capable of 30 FPS in full color, and can even see in the dark through infrared. The new Kinect also has a greater field of depth which Microsoft promises will cut down on the required distance from the device. It can also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-ones-kinect-discerns-heartbeat-and-who-has-the-controller/">read your heartbeat</a> but we try not to think about that too much because it's <em>scary</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/next-gen-kinect-for-windows-gesticulating-in-2014/">Next-gen Kinect for Windows gesticulating in 2014</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 May 2013 16:00:00 EST. <br />
This week's live <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/super-joystiq-podcast">Super Joystiq Podcast</a> is all about the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a>. This is our second show on the topic, but a lot more info has trickled out in the last two days. We'll also get to hear the straight dope from our own Ludwig Kietzmann and Alexander Sliwinski, who both attended Microsoft's Xbox Reveal event in Washington.<br />
<br />
And since we're on the subject of Xbox, we'll be giving away a very limited edition Xbox 360 controller - there's only one of them - featuring the Joystiq logo and long-lasting, built-in lithium-ion battery. Tune it to see how you can win.<br />
<br />
The show goes live at 3:45 ET!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/23/super-joystiq-podcast-051-live-xbox-one/">Super Joystiq Podcast 051 Live: Xbox One</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 May 2013 15:30:00 EST. The NFL will receive $400 million from Microsoft over the next five years, according to an <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000205083/article/nfl-microsoft-strike-deal-to-enhance-fans-tv-viewing-of-games">Associated Press</a> source. The partnership was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-features-nfl-live-broadcasts-smartglass-fantasy-footba/">announced</a> during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-reveal">Microsoft's Xbox One unveiling</a> yesterday and will see NFL content coming to Microsoft's next-generation console.<br />
<br />
As for the NFL side, fans will see Microsoft branding on-field during live games starting this upcoming season. Coaches and other team officials will be provided <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/18/microsoft-announces-surface-tablet-at-los-angeles-event/">Microsoft Surface tablets</a>, with the possibility of further technological innovations coming from Microsoft throughout the longevity of the deal.<br />
<br />
The Xbox One will have interactive features integrated during broadcasts, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smartglass">SmartGlass</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-allows-group-skype-video-calls/">group Skype calling</a> and fantasy stats available during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-features-nfl-live-broadcasts-smartglass-fantasy-footba/">live NFL games</a>. Recently, Amazon announced a limited edition version of <em>Madden NFL 25</em> bundled with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/limited-amazon-exclusive-madden-25-special-edition-includes-free/">a free DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket subscription</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/report-microsofts-nfl-deal-valued-at-400-million-over-five-ye/">Report: Microsoft's NFL deal valued at $400 million over five years</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 20:30:00 EST. Owners of the original Kinect on Xbox 360 had the ability to unplug the device, but that won't be the case with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-ones-kinect-discerns-heartbeat-and-who-has-the-controller/">ever-vigilant and always-listening</a> Xbox One version, Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer told Joystiq.<br />
<br />
"Kinect has to be connected to Xbox One," Spencer said. "That, from a creator standpoint, I love, because I like to have a common platform that I can target."<br />
<br />
Spencer did take the opportunity to note that just because Kinect is always connected now, it doesn't mean Xbox One games are going to integrate physical activity at every opportunity.<br />
<br />
"What I'm seeing in the creation process is more subtle uses of Kinect. I think when Kinect first came out on 360 everybody felt if you weren't doing jumping jacks in the middle of the room it wasn't a Kinect game," he said, going on to describe various everyday uses, such as watching television, for the product.<br />
<br />
If you have concerns about Microsoft installing an always-on microphone and camera in your living room, better invest in a veil for the camera and some way of muffling Kinect's "ears." Owners of the next-gen console will need to accept Kinect is watching thee and there's little privacy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/xbox-one-requires-kinect-connection/">Xbox One requires Kinect connection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 17:30:00 EST. While no such thing is planned for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a> launch window later this year, Microsoft Studios VP Phil Spencer isn't ruling out the possibility of video game shows like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/1-vs-100/">1 vs 100</a> </em>for the Xbox One.<br />
<br />
Microsoft learned "a ton" from <em>1 vs 100</em> about bringing "hundreds of thousands of people together in a virtual game environment and have them play with each other and give away real prizes," Spencer told <a href="http://www.oxm.co.uk/54528/microsoft-1-vs-100-style-interactive-gameshows-will-return-on-xbox-one/">OXM</a>. "I think that's a category that lends itself to our kind of community and interactivity," but he added no such thing would likely make launch. "We'll see how our timelines go."<br />
<br />
<em>1 vs 100</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/02/best-of-the-rest-bens-picks-of-2010/">a</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2010/">big</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/01/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks-of-2010/">hit</a> with the Joystiq staff when it launched in 2010. <em>1 vs 100 </em>was a weekly free game show played through Xbox Live at a specific time, where contestants could win real prizes. Microsoft pulled the plug in July of that year, though ex-host Chris Cashman was kind enough to produce <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/18/chris-cashman-speaks-on-the-end-of-1-vs-100/">a goodbye video</a> of sorts.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/1-vs-100-style-game-shows-possible-on-xbox-one/">1 vs 100-style game shows possible on Xbox One</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 14:30:00 EST. Don't expect any cross-platform play between Xbox 360 and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a>. That's what Microsoft Xbox UK marketing manager Harvey Eagle confirmed to <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/microsoft_rules_out_xbox_one_xbox_360_cross-platform_play.html">Videogamer</a>. <br />
<br />
"Because of the different architecture of the systems it's not possible. Your Xbox Live account on 360 will carry over to Xbox One. That same account will work on both platforms. The multiplayer won't," Eagle told Videogamer. The Xbox 360 is built on PowerPC architecture, while the Xbox One utilizes an x86 chipset - so no purchased games will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-not-backwards-compatible-with-360-discs-xbla-purchases/">transfer</a> to the new system.<br />

The Xbox One was announced by Microsoft yesterday during its Redmond campus <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbox-reveal">Xbox reveal</a> event. The Xbox One is due to launch later this year. Xbox Live profiles and corresponding Achievements on Xbox 360 will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-not-backwards-compatible-with-360-discs-xbla-purchases/">carry over to Xbox One</a>, which also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-supports-1000-friends/">bumps up the friends limit to 1,000</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/microsoft-no-cross-platform-play-between-xbox-one-and-xbox-360/">Microsoft: No cross-platform play between Xbox One and Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. The Xbox One's next-generation Kinect has a greater interest in your facial features, and is capable of discerning your identity, even if you hand off the controller.<br />
<br />
In a brief demonstration in one of its Kinect testing rooms, Microsoft showed press how the Kinect kept track of two player profiles, each tied to a controller in use. When Player 1 and Player 2 swap controllers, the Xbox One is able to recognize which profile is the new Player 1. The Kinect also monitors the position of players, meaning it can match portions of split-screen games to the side of the screen at which that player is looking. This may also translate to fighting games, which is good news if you're the sort to get confused when your spot in the couch isn't aligned with your character. [<strong>Update:</strong> The Xbox One controller itself shouldn't go without credit, as it houses an infrared LED that helps with pairing and identification.] <br />
<br />
Microsoft also demonstrated a few more tricks made possible by the new Kinect's enhanced sense of depth, its greater field of view - which does make closer gaming in smaller apartments a more feasible - its ability to see in the dark via infrared, and its flattering scrutiny of facial features. By examining your face's skin color and transparency, the Kinect and Xbox One are able to estimate your current heart rate. Whether or not someone puts that information to good use in Kinect games or fitness programs is another matter, as we've learned from Nintendo's flatlined "vitality sensor."<br />
<br />
Valve has experimented with biometric data in games too, adjusting game difficulty, objectives and timers in response to the player's physical state. With a Kinect shipping alongside every Xbox One, and assuming the camera is relatively accurate, biometric influence over gameplay may become less esoteric in the near future.<span><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/">Xbox One (Official shots)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/#5900209"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/xboxcontrollerftransbgrgb2013_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/#5900210"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/xboxcontrollerrhs78transbgrgb2013_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/#5900207"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/xboxconsoleftilttransbgrgb2013_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/#5900208"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/xboxconsolerhs78transbgrgb2013_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/xbox-one-official-shots/#5900211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/xboxconslesensrcontrollrftransbgrgb2013_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-ones-kinect-discerns-heartbeat-and-who-has-the-controller/">Xbox One's Kinect discerns heartbeat and who has the controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 20:15:00 EST. The Xbox One's connection to the cloud can alter a game's Achievements in response to player behavior, Microsoft has revealed at its ongoing unveiling event in Redmond. Dan Greenawalt, Creative Director at Forza developer Turn 10 Studios, cited the "<a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-took-an-arrow-in-the-knee">I took an arrow to the knee</a>" meme as an example of how game makers might hinge their extrinsic rewards on post-launch reactions.<br />
<br />
The meme began with <em>The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim</em>, in which droves of melancholic guards told the same story about an old injury.<br />
<br />
To extrapolate from Greenawalt's comment, it seems Microsoft is keen to further distance itself from the idea of the game as a static disc. Xbox 360 games had their Achievement lists extended with significant title updates and downloadable expansions, but the Xbox One is expected to update the rewards list more fluidly. Game creators may use Achievements to encourage comical or topical behavior, or use them to educate players if they're missing certain features or secrets.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-can-update-achievements-in-response-to-player-behavior/">Xbox One can update Achievements in response to player behavior</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 16:08:00 EST. Microsoft today announced the next generation of Xbox technology, called the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a>. Sony previously announced the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/playstation-4">PlayStation 4</a> back on February 20, so we now have a full look at just what both next-generation HD boxes will contain.<br />
<br />
After the break, we've assembled a chart comparing the two consoles and their various components. The two machines are surprisingly similar, with both using an eight core CPU, the same amount of RAM, and both containing a combo Blu-Ray and DVD drive. But there are some major differences, too: Microsoft has created its own chip for the Xbox One, and the PlayStation 4 controller contains that share button and the clickable touchpad. Prices for both units haven't been announced yet, but both will be available later on this year.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-and-playstation-4-specs-compared/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Xbox One and PlayStation 4 specs compared</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-and-playstation-4-specs-compared/">Xbox One and PlayStation 4 specs compared</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 14:46:00 EST. Microsoft will build a new relationship with the NFL on <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/xbox-one">Xbox One</a>. On Microsoft's new console, users will be able to take advantage of numerous interactive features available only on Xbox. These include Smartglass integration and the ability for users to see their fantasy football stats updated automatically while watching live broadcasts of the latest NFL games. Users will also be able to call and taunt their fantasy football friends via Skype.<br />

Microsoft's new Xbox has been officially unveiled at the company's Redmond campus in a big, giant tent in the middle of the complex (so much for the console sharing its birth story with friends as a teenager).<br />
<br />
For a sense of symmetry with our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/playstation-4/">PlayStation 4 reveal post</a>, the announcement of the new Xbox console comes seven years and six months (2,737 days) after the launch of the Xbox 360, marking one of the longest distances of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff between one console and its next regeneration.<br />
<br />
The distance in time between this console and the last certainly makes up for the original Xbox's lifespan, which was one of the shortest, at a mere four years and one day.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> The Xbox One will launch "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-coming-later-this-year/">later this year</a>," Microsoft President of Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick said near the end of today's conference.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-revealed/">Xbox One revealed [Update: Launches later this year]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 May 2013 13:05:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deep-silver">Deep Silver</a> will publish an upcoming gesture-based racing game for Kinect called <em>Freefall Racers</em>. The first breadcrumb in this trail comes from <a href="http://www.classification.gov.au/Pages/View.aspx?sid=ktuK3Q%252f2QcfYHeXPBc6J7Q%253d%253d&amp;ncdctx=GsSXRyRdlMKxfsSXybcacyD%252f%2bfCoWxIAgqp83IFWjn1qawLmVA0tWHsHBG9lWpXU">an Australian rating</a> that has surfaced, outing Deep Silver as publisher.<br />
<br />
The developer is Smoking Gun Interactive, whose <a href="http://www.smokingguninc.com/products/recent-releases/">most recent</a> work includes two Kinect experiences, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/get-your-kinect-to-mars/"><em>Mars Rover Landing</em></a> and <em>Home Run Stars</em>, so a new Kinect project would make sense. The Vancouver-based studio at least partly funded <em>Freefall Racers</em> with help from the Canadian government, as evidenced by the $461,243 contributed <a href="http://www.cmf-fmc.ca/documents/files/funded/2011-12/results/2011-12-q4-funding-results.pdf">through the Canada Media Fund</a> (PDF) last year.<br />
<br />
Our first glimpse of the game is courtesy of environmental artist Anthony Leonati, who <s>published six screens from <em>Freefall Racers</em> on his personal website.</s> [<strong>Update:</strong> The images have been pulled from Leonati's website.] In addition to the screens, he also pegs <em>Freefall Racers</em> for Xbox Live Arcade, though his LinkedIn profile indicates he has since moved on from Smoking Gun to become a senior environment artist at EA.<br />
<br />
We've followed up with Deep Silver and Smoking Gun Interactive for comment and will update this post accordingly.<br />

It's not enough just to play games anymore. Nowadays, you have to <em>watch</em> them too. That just got a little easier on the Xbox 360, thanks to a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/twitch">Twitch.tv</a> app. The streaming app is <a href="http://majornelson.com/2013/05/14/twitch-app-comes-to-xbox/">now available</a> for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, offering "access to 300 of the most popular streams," including tournaments, all organized by game or popularity.<br />
<br />
Twitch will host a special live broadcast with Xbox Live guru Major Nelson following next week's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/xbox-reveal-may-21/">Xbox Revealed</a>" event on May 21. The broadcast will air on Twitch.tv and the Twitch app on Xbox 360, beginning at 3pm Eastern. The event itself, incidentally, starts at 1pm Eastern. Tune into Joystiq for lots of live coverage.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/14/twitch-app-now-broadcasting-on-xbox-360/">Twitch app now broadcasting on Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 May 2013 11:30:00 EST. With the next Xbox reveal just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/xbox-reveal-may-21/">ten days</a> away, it's as good a time as ever to revisit a report that dates back to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/21/rumor-xbox-tv-set-top-box-in-development-to-debut-pre-holida/">November 2012</a>: Microsoft's reported interest in developing a set-top box, or "Xbox TV." Anonymous sources recently told the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323744604578473174039768406.html">Wall Street Journal</a> that Microsoft has come as far as producing working prototypes of said media device. Those prototypes reportedly work with Kinect, and are built to provide streaming services for viewers.<br />
<br />
The Wall Street Journal also noted that it's unclear whether Microsoft will introduce the as-yet-unannounced device at all. We've contacted Microsoft for comment and will update as we learn more. In the meantime, we recommend that you take a ten-day nap, because the rampant speculation leading up to the Xbox reveal on May 21 probably won't go away.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> A Microsoft spokesperson got back to us with the following: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/rumor-microsoft-set-top-box-in-prototype-stage-supports-kinect/">Rumor: Microsoft set-top box in prototype stage, supports Kinect [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 May 2013 16:30:00 EST. This event follows very shortly after the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/xbox-reveal-may-21/">May 21 event</a> at which Microsoft will reveal the next Xbox. Presumably we'll get more detail on that system and new game announcements at the E3 event. Or we'll be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/microsofts-e3-project-natal-event-to-feature-cirque-du-soleil-p/">tricked into some avant-garde circus performance</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/29/microsoft-books-la-venue-for-event-on-june-10/">Microsoft books LA venue for event on June 10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Apr 2013 18:00:00 EST. Episodes of <em>Arrow</em>, <em>The Vampire Diaries</em>, <em>Supernatural</em> and other select CW shows will be available the day after airing.<br /><br />The Vampire Diaries supports <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smartglass%7Cxbox-smartglass">Xbox SmartGlass</a> functionality, enabling content like an interactive map, character biographies and show lore. Flixster on Xbox allows users to buy and rent films, access "the latest" film review scores from the critic aggregator source Rotten Tomatoes and look up local showtimes in the most clunky way possible ... <em>on your television</em>!<br /><br />As part of the Warner Family, Flixster on Xbox 360 also allows users access their existing UltraViolet movie collection. The app is available to download in select regions and only to those with a continued appreciation of DRM.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/flixster-comes-to-xbox-360-with-ultraviolet-collection-support/">Flixster comes to Xbox 360 with Ultraviolet Collection support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Apr 2013 22:00:00 EST. Entitled the 1000 Club, the DLC adds over 1000 challenges to complete, along with some new Achievements. The DLC will automatically suggest challenges based on whatever cars a player owns. Based on the trailer, the challenges offer more than racing, tasking players with everything from making huge jumps to just crashing into things. The 1000 Club will also include two new cars, the 1956 Ford F100 and the 1995 RUF CTR2.<br /><br />Microsoft tells Joystiq that the pack will feature unique challenges for every single car in the game, including the cars from the standard game and those that have been released as DLC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/15/forza-horizon-rolls-out-free-1000-club-dlc-tomorrow/">Forza Horizon rolls out free 1000 Club DLC tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Apr 2013 16:15:00 EST. Some of us just want <em>moar</em> video games, and in particular ones involving Lego pieces, Disney characters, Simstuff, Skylanders goodies, and, er, <em>Dance Central 3</em>. You may say we're weird, fussy, and worryingly specific. But, as if by some holiday miracle, Amazon is here for us.<br /><br />The retailer's Easter sale brings savings across a ton of Lego, Disney, Skylanders, and Sims content - and yes, <em>Dance Central 3. </em>Harmonix's third moves-buster is down to just $19.99, while the <em>Kinect Sports Ultimate Collection</em> bundle is at $28.46.<br /><br />Meanwhile, <em>Epic Mickey 2</em> falls to $19.99 on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U, <em>Lego Batman 2</em> on 360, PS3, Vita and Wii is $14.99, and <em>SimCity</em> is already down to $39.99 - or $19.99 if you buy it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/25/buy-dove-products-get-20-off-dead-space-3-simcity-or-most-wa/">alongside some clean-sounding stuff</a>. We first saw this technology in action way back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/15/kinectfusion-hq-creates-3d-models-from-your-surroundings/">August of 2011</a>, when the concept surfaced as a Microsoft Research project.<br /><br />Additionally, the new SDK also includes "Kinect Interactions," which adds support for new gestures such as "push-to-press" and "grip-to-pan," as well as "support for smart ways to accommodate multiple users and two-person interactions," according to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/16/kinect-for-windows-sdk-1.7/">Engadget</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/kinect-for-windows-sdk-version-1-7-includes-kinect-fusion-3d-m/">Kinect for Windows SDK version 1.7 includes 'Kinect Fusion' 3D modeling, available March 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 19:00:00 EST. In fact, Futatsugi tells <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-13-crimson-dragon-still-lives-and-is-not-far-off">Eurogamer</a> that <em>Crimson Dragon</em> is "not far off" from completion.<br /><br />"Well, the game has been delayed and I know people are waiting for it, but it is definitely moving ahead," Futatsugi says. "Microsoft will announce it when they're ready."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/02/crimson-dragon-demo-briefly-released-in-japan-captured-on-video/">A demo</a> for <em>Crimson Dragon</em> launched briefly - and accidentally - on the Japanese Xbox Live Marketplace in January 2012, demonstrating the game's early mechanics and design. We're not saying the gameplay looks like doing the Hokey Pokey in front of a Kinect, but it looks like doing the Hokey Pokey in front of a Kinect. With dragons.<br /><br />"When we started working on it I realized that a rail shooter is perfect for Kinect," Futatsugi says. "Kinect can't handle too much movement - you can't move totally freely. Also, it's better to keep the number of recognized movements simple so as not to confuse the Kinect system, and these things make a rail shooter the ideal choice."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/13/futatsugi-crimson-dragon-is-not-far-from-a-final-build/">Futatsugi: Crimson Dragon is 'not far' from a final build</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 23:00:00 EST. Microsoft has released 22 different samples of Kinect for Windows code under an open source licensing agreement, meaning you're free to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect-hacks">tinker away</a> to your heart's content - just don't try to pass it off as your own.<br /><br />What makes this different than the previously widely available <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/16/kinect-for-windows-software-development-kit-beta-released/">software development kit</a>? Microsoft says it has issued these samples for the sake of convenience, allowing fledgling flailers access to bite-sized segments designed for specific functionality and lessons that don't require a lengthy download of the full SDK. <em>Convenient</em>.<br /><br />Kinect for Windows officially <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/09/kinect-for-windows-leers-at-february-1-launch-date/">launched</a> on February 1, available now for a suggested retail price of $250 - though some retailers like Amazon and Newegg have it listed on the lower side of $200.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/13/microsoft-releases-22-kinect-for-windows-open-source-samplers/">Microsoft releases 22 Kinect for Windows open source samplers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 03:00:00 EST. "As Harmonix moves forward with several new titles currently in development, the talented developers who make this content are needed on other projects," reads the <a href="http://www.dancecentral.com/march-dlc-update">Dance Central blog</a>. The studio doesn't completely shut the door on more content, however, stating that March is the last month of new DLC "for the near future." Live challenges and leaderboards will continue to be supported, and all DLC tracks will remain available.<br /><br />This is the second time Harmonix has made such an announcement this year. Last month, the developer revealed that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3"><em>Rock Band 3</em></a> will receive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/18/rock-band-weekly-dlc-lowers-the-curtain-april-2/">no more DLC after April 2</a>. The Rock Band franchise as a whole has had weekly DLC since the original game debuted in 2007.<br /><br />That raises the question: Just what is studio working on now? Dance Central has consistently been one of the best-received products for Microsoft's Kinect, so it wouldn't be surprising to see a new Dance Central debut on the next Xbox, which is believed to have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect-2">more advanced Kinect sensor</a>. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/ps4-eye-has-two-cameras-one-to-watch-you-one-to-make-you-prett/">PS4 Eye</a> is capable of motion-track as well, so a multiplatform title is also possible. Or who knows, maybe we'll see something entirely new.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/08/march-is-last-month-of-dance-central-3-dlc-for-the-near-future/">March is last month of Dance Central 3 DLC 'for the near future'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 13:45:00 EST. Called <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kinectforwindows/archive/2013/03/06/kinect-fusion-demonstrated-at-microsoft-research-techfest-coming-soon-to-sdk.aspx">Kinect Fusion</a>, the software uses depth information from the sensor to to instantly create detailed 3D models. All you have to do is move the Kinect around an object, person or room and the model is automatically generated.<br /><br />Kinect Fusion will be implemented in a future update to the Kinect for Windows SDK. The applications for game development are pretty obvious. Imagine being able to easily insert yourself as a playable avatar in a game, for example. Check out a video of Kinect Fusion in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/kinect-fusion-creates-3d-models-on-the-fly-coming-to-windows-sd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kinect Fusion creates 3D models on the fly, coming to Windows SDK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/07/kinect-fusion-creates-3d-models-on-the-fly-coming-to-windows-sd/">Kinect Fusion creates 3D models on the fly, coming to Windows SDK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Mar 2013 13:00:00 EST. It was to be the first game developed in partnership with film director Gore Verbinski (<em>Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl</em>, <em>Rango</em>) and Blind Wink Games.<br /><br />"Microsoft Studios is no longer pursuing this title," says a company representative. "We have no further details to share at this time."<br /><br />Phil Spencer, Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios, told Joystiq in June last year that Verbinski had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/08/gore-verbinskis-matter-coming-to-xbla-from-blind-wink-games/">pitched <em>Matter</em></a> as a means to instill and demonstrate emotion in typically motionless game players. A futuristic metal sphere, seen moving through a futuristic landscape in the game's E3 2012 trailer, represented an active control surface implemented through Kinect.<br /><br />"To a lot of people who haven't played games for a long time, somebody standing completely stationary with a controller in their hands kind of seems emotionless, even though we know that we'll be sweating or twitching," Spencer said.
