That makes us doubt it'll be out Stateside before the end of the year, but at least it's actually being released. Actually, for a long time we perceived <em>Crystal Bearers</em> as in trouble or delayed, but four years for a <em>Final Fantasy</em> game seems about right! <br /><br />Square Enix also revealed the box art (posted in full after the break), which is both nice-looking on its own merits <em>and</em> evidence that Square Enix is getting around to finally putting this thing into boxes!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20090828_311490.html">GAME Watch</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/ffcc-crystal-bearers-now-bears-a-japanese-release-date/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>FFCC: Crystal Bearers now bears a Japanese release date</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/ffcc-crystal-bearers-now-bears-a-japanese-release-date/">FFCC: Crystal Bearers now bears a Japanese release date</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 17:16:00 EST. This gives DS owners more chance to hear about the game prior to its release, and blogs like this another opportunity to report about the game, like we're doing right now. Yes, we played right into Atlus's hands. But if the company's going to hold <em>Steal Princess</em> hostage until we post about it, what choice do we have? We'd like to play it this year!<br /><br />Along with the announcement, as is Atlus's custom, the company revealed a bonus included with every copy. The reverse of the box cover will feature the above artwork, selected by fan votes, as a mini-poster. We're on the fence about removing part of the game's box to decorate a tiny patch of wall space, but we like options (and we like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/steal-princess-site-updates-with-new-video-content/"><em>Steal Princess</em> artwork</a>!)<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/">Steal Princess</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/#1468423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/stealprincess040203_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/#1297126"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/stealprincess11609007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/#1297125"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/stealprincess11609006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/#1297124"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/stealprincess11609008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/steal-princess/#1297123"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2009/01/stealprincess11609001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/02/atluss-latest-delay-plus-bribe-combo-steal-princess/">Atlus's latest delay-plus-bribe combo: Steal Princess</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Apr 2009 16:00:00 EST. Should you RPG fans finish <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/joystiq-hands-on-blue-dragon-plus-ds/"><em>Blue Dragon Plus</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/legacy-of-ys-books-i-and-ii-delayed-soundtrack-bundled/"><em>Legacy of Ys</em></a> this week, you'll still have <em>Avalon Code</em> to look forward to on March 10.<br /><br /><em>Avalon Code</em> tasks players with filling a magical "Book of Prophecy" with monsters, people, and everything else found throughout the world. Once profiled, the pages from this book can then be used to <em>alter</em> the game world and "influence a myriad of parameters from monster attributes to weapon strength." The book is <em>also</em> useful for identifying stats and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/more-information-for-your-avalon-code-logbook/">elemental weaknesses</a> about monsters you encounter. <br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/mark-it-in-your-datebook-avalon-code-coming-march-10/">Mark it in your datebook: Avalon Code coming March 10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 15:30:00 EST. Capcom announced a release window for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/monster-hunter-3-new-monsters-to-hunt-new-places-to-hunt-them/"><em>Monster Hunter 3</em></a> yesterday at the Capcom/<a href="http://www.pasela.co.jp/main.html">Pasela</a> "<a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/articles/2009/01/30/monster_hunter_pasela_tieup/">Hunter's Banquet G</a>" event in Tokyo. The multiplayer action RPG, which drew <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/12/tgs-08-monster-hunter-3-is-kind-of-a-big-deal-pt-2/">epic lines</a> at the Tokyo Game Show, will be released this summer. <em>Famitsu</em> promises a full report of the event upcoming, but this is likely to be the biggest news out of it!<br /> <br />We assumed that <em>MH3</em> wouldn't be released until some time after April, because Capcom is including a demo with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/japanese-monster-hunter-g-bundle-includes-special-edition-blue-c/"><em>Monster Hunter G</em></a>, which comes out April 23. We're surprised that Capcom isn't holding this back until the fall, since this is likely to be the company's (or anybody's) biggest release of the year.<br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/953/953949p1.html">IGN</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/monster-hunter-3-captures-japans-money-this-summer/">Monster Hunter 3 captures Japan's money this summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 13:30:00 EST. New screenshots of the dual DS-Wii release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/comparing-echoes-of-time-on-wii-and-ds/"><em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time</em></a> show off a lot of rather interesting new things! First, and most obviously, <em>hey,</em> it's the King and Chime from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/no-more-dlc-planned-for-my-life-as-a-king/">My Life as a King</a>! </em>Actually, as far as we can tell, it's player characters in <em>costumes</em> resembling the stars of Square Enix's WiiWare strategy game. Second, it seems that the Wii version has received a bit more of a visual upgrade since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-echoes-of-time/1214658/full/">we last saw it</a>. It's smoother, anyway.<br /><br /><em>Echoes of Time</em> features a (fairly standard) "New Game Plus" mode in which players can start again after finishing the game, to find more items, including many that are unavailable the first time through. We assume that's the only way to get these costumes, for instance. You can choose either to start again with your same character and continue building, or to start a new character, which increases the difficulty!<br /><br />

We've been looking at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/monster-hunter-gs-online-mode-play-an-old-game-together/">screens</a> of the ported <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/japanese-monster-hunter-g-bundle-includes-special-edition-blue-c/"><em>Monster Hunter G</em></a> lately, so to return to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/underwater-monster-hunting/"><em>Monster Hunter 3</em></a>, which is <em>already</em> one of the best-looking Wii games, is dramatic. Capcom's use of all kinds of crazy lighting in the sequel is effective, giving the action RPG a "next gen" feel. Really, they <em>could</em> make the whole thing in the ugly old <em>Monster Hunter G</em> engine and <em>still</em> sell millions of copies.<br /><br />The latest screens introduce a weird locale that appears to be somehow part desert and part <em>swamp</em>, full of nests of giant, monstrous insects, and home to <em>this </em>guy. This dragon, called "Boruboros" (probably "Volvolos" or something in English) comes out of a big mud pit and attacks with his giant, hard head.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/monster-hunter-3-new-monsters-to-hunt-new-places-to-hunt-them/">Monster Hunter 3: New monsters to hunt, new places to hunt them</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 15:32:00 EST. [Update: for those of you lusting after the game or (more likely) the controller, Capcom's Christian Svensson has <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/13013879/Capcom_i_want_this&amp;post_num=2#251745636">announced</a> that there will be <em>no</em> US release for either. "Sorry. :(" Thanks to Samfish for pointing this out!]<br /><br />For such a lazily-developed game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> is putting significant resources into the Wii port of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/monster-hunter-g-is-for-classic-controllers-only/"><em>Monster Hunter G</em></a>. In order to get around the Classic Controller requirement (and promote sales, of course), they've announced a <em>Monster Hunter G Starter Pack</em> bundle featuring this awesome blue, dragon-adorned (but not <em>Blue Dragon</em>-adorned) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Classic-Controller/">Classic Controller</a>. This is, as far as we know, just the <em>second</em> special-edition (Nintendo brand) Wii controller -- the first was also a Classic Controller, specifically the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/15/unboxing-the-super-famicom-classic-controller/">Club Nintendo Super Famicom Classic Controller</a>. This is also the first official Wii controller to be released in a color other than white. In other words: a big deal. And it's so cool-looking!<br /><br />The Starter Pack will retail for 5,240 yen ($59) when it is released in Japan on April 23. Both this release and the game-only release of <em>Monster Hunter G</em> (3,990 yen, or $45) will include a demo of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/underwater-monster-hunting/">Monster Hunter 3</a>.</em> And just like that, <em>Monster Hunter G</em> has become a guaranteed bestseller.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/japanese-monster-hunter-g-bundle-includes-special-edition-blue-c/">Japanese Monster Hunter G bundle includes special-edition blue Classic Controller, Monster Hunter 3 demo [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 09:57:00 EST. Okay, so the remake of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/monster-hunter-g-is-for-classic-controllers-only/"><em>Monster Hunter G</em></a> isn't <em>entirely</em> a quick cash grab by Capcom as they work on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/underwater-monster-hunting/"><em>Monster Hunter 3</em></a>. Well, actually, it is, but it's a quick cash grab with <em>online play</em>, which seems a lot better. <em>Monster Hunter G'</em>s online mode revolves around various quests given to players from their guild hall. They're about what we'd expect: kill this monster, get this item, etc. Groups of up to four can participate in the same quests, using equipment (traps, bombs) found within the quest to complete their objectives.<br /><br />The game's quest-mode environments (or <em>the real game</em>) look much, much better than the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/at-home-in-monster-hunter-gs-kokoto-village/">in-town stuff</a> we've seen, but <em>MHG</em> still looks exactly like the old <em>Monster Hunter </em>it is!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/14/monster-hunter-gs-online-mode-play-an-old-game-together/">Monster Hunter G's online mode: play an old game together</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 13:45:00 EST. You can get new quests from Stiltzkin the Moogle, who has previously appeared in <em>Final Fantasy IX</em> and both previous <em>Crystal Chronicles </em>games, as well as from people around town.<br /><br />One of the quests shown: wrangling wayward cattle in a dungeon! Your team must use red flags to direct wandering cows to their destination without allowing any of them to get killed. Now <em>that</em>'s adventurin'!<br /><br />When not corraling, you'll also be able to play a few multiplayer minigames, including boss rush and some kind of game about getting a floating beach ball into a whirlpool.<br />

Sega has <em>finally</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/phantasy-star-zero-confirmed-for-north-america/">announced</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/getting-chatty-in-phantasy-star-zero/"><em>Phantasy Star Zero</em></a> for North American and European release (press release at the "source" link, new screens in the gallery), putting to an end our (mild) fears that the multiplayer action RPG would never leave Japan. But the press release specifies "Winter 2009" -- with a promise of more info in "<span class="postbody">the coming months" that suggests that they <em>don't</em> mean the winter 2009 we're currently in the middle of, but the <em>next</em> one. As in, almost a whole year away.<br /><br />Our immediate reaction was "<em>nooooooo</em>," but then we realized that there are just <em>way</em> too many DS games coming out in 2009 -- especially in the first half -- and maybe it's a good thing that we don't have to try to crowd <em>Phantasy Star Zero</em> in with all that stuff. It'll probably get crowded with a lot of <em>future</em> stuff, but we don't know that right now.<br /><br />What's your take? Too far away or helpful for your monthly time/money budgeting? Does <em>PS0</em> say "holiday lineup" to you?<br /><br /><br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/10/ds-daily-phantasy-starting-too-late/">DS Daily: Phantasy Starting too late?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Jan 2009 10:30:00 EST. A reader sent the photo in to our friends at GoNintendo, and posters at NeoGAF also report the <em>Nintendo Power</em> cover. Word of mouth on the game has been incredibly positive, so we would be excited even if we weren't talking about <em>Phantasy Star Zero</em>. But we are, so that means we're <em>over the moon</em>. Are you as excited as we are? If not, maybe you should <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/08/a-delightfully-comprehensive-phantasy-star-zero-trailer/">check out a trailer</a>.<br /><br />Oh, and we should also mention that Sega just sent us a press release confirming the game will release in Europe.<br /><br />
<br />Read -- <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=68603">GoNintendo</a><br />Read -- <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346233&amp;page=4">NeoGAF</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/phantasy-star-zero-confirmed-for-north-america/">Phantasy Star Zero confirmed for North America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 13:22:00 EST. Time to branch out into new territory, right? That's just what they're doing with <span style="font-style: italic;">Deathbringer</span> -- an ARPG ... uh, with puzzle elements.<br /><br />Listen, when the hybrid works, it <em>works</em>. And most RPGs have some puzzle elements somewhere, so despite the hilarity of Infinite Interactive doing the opposite of what they've done before, it's not too far off the beaten path. Of course, they could probably make a game about scooping doggy poop off the sidewalk and we'd play it. That Puzzle Quest was some fun. Hit the break to see what they have to say about their forthcoming <span style="font-style: italic;">Deathbringer</span>, which will be released for nearly every console known to man. Think companions and co-op. Maybe they should have named it <span style="font-style: italic;">Awesomebringer</span>..<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348079">NeoGAF</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/infinite-interactive-mixes-it-up-again-with-deathbringer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Infinite Interactive mixes it up again with Deathbringer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/infinite-interactive-mixes-it-up-again-with-deathbringer/">Infinite Interactive mixes it up again with Deathbringer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Our first devent look at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/monster-hunter-g-is-for-classic-controllers-only/"><em>Monster Hunter G</em></a>'s Wii visuals comes from Famitsu's introduction to Kokoto Village, the main town location in the game. As for those visuals, they fall squarely into the "kinda rough" range, as we'd expect from an unaltered PS2 game.<br /><br />The town features a farm, which provides extra items to players willing to spend the time on upgrades and minigames. It also features various shops including weapon and armor shops. Many of the Famitsu shots show possible armor configurations, against a backdrop of the house containing the item box you can use to <em>store</em> those weapons and armor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/07/at-home-in-monster-hunter-gs-kokoto-village/">At home in Monster Hunter G's Kokoto Village</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 15:30:00 EST. While the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/capcom-denies-monster-hunter-3-non-exclusivity-rumors/"><em>Monster Hunter 3 tri-</em></a> offers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/tgs08-monster-hunter-3-features-classic-controller-support-spl/">multiple control schemes</a> that allow use of Wiimote/Nunchuk motion controls <em>or</em> a traditional-style Classic Controller layout (as well as multiple variations on "three" in the title), the newly-announced Wii version of the PS2/PSP <em>Monster Hunter G</em> only works with Classic Controllers. At least it also has four-player online play. Chances are, most people won't miss the waggle. Or they could get <em>Monster Hunter 3</em> and not really miss out on <em>anything.</em><br /><br />Speaking of <em>Monster Hunter 3</em>, do check out <em>that</em> game's <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/monsterhunter/3/page02.html">website</a> for new monster renders. <br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=335710&amp;page=12">NeoGAF</a>]<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/monster-hunter-g-is-for-classic-controllers-only/">Monster Hunter G is for Classic Controllers only</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Dec 2008 12:55:00 EST. <p>Not that we're complaining! <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1230232671458*/"><em>Monster Hunter 3 (tri-)</em></a><em> </em>will <em>probably</em> launch in Japan next year, but first the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/capcom-ensures-a-port-filled-future-with-re4/">port</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/okami-wii-an-exact-port-of-ps2-game/">happy</a> Capcom wants to get you in the mood/tide you over with ... more <em>Monster Hunter</em>! <em>Famitsu</em> reveals that <em>Monster Hunter G</em>, an extra frills edition of the first <em>Monster Hunter</em> game, will be coming to Japanese Wiis in the spring.</p>
<p>The Wii version, which <em>Famitsu</em> says (with ridiculous specifity) is 77% complete, will allow you to choose from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps2">PS2</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp">PSP</a> controls, has widescreen support, and is apparently a near-identical port. Will we see this in places that aren't Japan? We hope so! The title already came to the west (as <em>Monster Hunter Freedom</em>), but only on the PSP.</p>

Now that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/04/kingdom-hearts-358-secondhand-impressions/"><em>Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days</em></a> has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/kingdom-heart-358-2-days-confirmed-for-north-america/">slated</a> for North America (like we ever doubted it was coming), we thought you might want to check out some gamplay videos. Oh, who are we kidding? We'd have looked at them anyway, even if the game were still only a dream in a developer's eye. The latest batch offers up a few more looks at an Ifrit's face (tip: it's angry), as well as peeks at the menu and combat. If we have to say they look good, then you haven't been paying attention. They look <em>amazing</em>. Now we need a couple of very-long trailers -- with lots of in-game footage -- to cement our desire. We have spoken, Square Enix. Make it happen, because <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/first-screens-and-video-from-blood-of-bahamut/">what we've seen</a> isn't enough.

You may even find a friend or two on the backs of these monsters (remember you also reside on the back of a Gigant): friends such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/blood-of-bahamut/1225632/">Kamo</a>, who wields a meaty axe. Random, non-essential trivia: Ifrits have appeared in other games before, including the first <em>Devil May Cry</em>, and even <em>Sonic and The Secret Rings</em>! Most famously of all, they make appearances in the <em>Final Fantasy</em> series.<br /><br />But enough of our factoids: hit up the gallery for nine new shots! There's no solid date beyond "spring," but the press release specifically mentions both the DS and Wii versions of the game.<br /><br />The cross-platform RPG features both online and local wireless multiplayer, through which up to four DSes can play together with one hosting, or one DS can host three DS players. The European release features English, Spanish, French, and German language modes, with multiplayer across languages also supported. To aid in communication, <em>Echoes</em> has a selection of fixed macros as well as user-customizable ones.<br /><br />Check our gallery for the first English screens (of the DS version, mostly)!<br /><br />

<em>Monster Hunter 3</em>, Capcom's Japan-ruling RPG, has had a rocky <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/monster-hunter-3-moved-from-ps3-to-wii/">history</a> since it was first announced. Initially, it was slated for the PS3, but late last year, the game defected to the Wii -- and was reportedly going to be exclusive to Nintendo's console. In the last couple of days, however, rumors have been swirling that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/tgs08-monster-hunter-3-features-classic-controller-support-spl/"><em>Monster Hunter 3 (tri-)</em></a> may head beyond the Wii and into the realm of the PSP, which hosted the last title in the franchise.<br /><br />Just a few hours ago, however, Capcom updated the game's <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/monsterhunter/3/">official site</a>, denying the rumors, though all they're saying is that they haven't said anything. That doesn't mean they can't say anything in the future!<br /><br />

<br />Square Enix has announced plans to release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/echoes-of-time-to-support-worldwide-play-evidence-points-to-nor/"><em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time</em></a> in North America next spring. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/01/square-enix-reveals-new-final-fantasy-for-wii/">cross-platform</a> ARPG will let players of the DS and Wii editions fight, level up, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/final-fantasy-crafting-chronicles-echoes-of-time/">build junk</a> <em>together</em>, regardless of which console they're playing on. Both versions will come out on the same day, because that's <em>kind of the point</em>. Worryingly, GameStop has the <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73019">Wii game</a> priced at $10 more than its <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73017">DS cousin</a> -- in Japan, both cost the same.<br /><br />Lumping DS and Wii players together means both games are pretty much identical (minus <a href="http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20081125/ffcc05.jpg">some on-screen furniture</a>), but also allows us to pass the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/final-fantasy-crystal-chronicles-echoes-of-time/1084422/">DS gallery</a> off as a Wii gallery. Handy!<br /> <br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/echoes-of-time-gets-spring-release-in-north-america/">Echoes of Time gets spring release in North America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 20:16:00 EST. Matrix Software's intriguing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/more-information-for-your-avalon-code-logbook/"><em>Avalon Code</em></a> may be in limbo at the moment -- already out in Japan, and not scheduled for release in English until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/e308-xseed-localizing-game-center-cx-ds-game-populous-ds/">next year</a> -- but that doesn't mean we're not keeping an eye on the ARPG. You may not be wielding your own special book for a while yet, but you can certainly watch someone else do it. In Japanese. And admire their elaborate costumes while you're at it.<br /><br />

Thanks to the return of the item crafting system from previous <em>Crystal Chronicles</em>, you'll have plenty of cool junk to show off to your friends in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/connect-and-play-anytime-anywhere-with-ffcc-echoes-of-time/">Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time</a>.</em> You'll be able to buy power-boosting jewels from shops and add them to slots in your weapons, permanently changing the weapon into a more powerful one. You can also have your own custom armor and other items made out of materials found while adventuring.<br /><br />Since the game seems to change your character model to reflect your equipment, that means that you can customize your appearance, and look as good as it is possible to look in a DS game played on your TV.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/final-fantasy-crafting-chronicles-echoes-of-time/">Final Fantasy Crafting Chronicles: Echoes of Time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 10:00:00 EST. <div align="left">It strikes us as pretty remarkable that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Konami/">Konami</a> can make a game that looks <em>nothing</em> like <em>Elebits</em>, takes place in completely different settings, and even uses a controller very different from the one that pretty much defined the first game, and <em>still</em> make a game that is identifiably <em>Elebits.</em> <br /><br />Really, aside from the fact that you tap stuff instead of pointing at it and clicking to move it, and that you have an Omega Elebit pal instead of a vacuum gun thing, you're still walking around, scouring the environment for lil' critters, in order to unlock additional areas. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/21/elebits-the-screens-of-kai-and-zero/"><em>Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero</em></a> sort of disproves that the first game was nothing but a Wiimote showcase.<br /><br /><br /></div>

The look, the design of the environments, and the atmospheric music <em>scream</em> "<em>Phantasy Star Online.</em>" The storyline does a beautiful job of presenting a civilization of technologically advanced pioneers. And just the very <em>existence</em> of an animated short like this suggests an admirable budget for the DS edition of the online action-RPG. It seemed like Sega was really going to do right by <em>PSO </em>fans.<br /><br />And then the theme song, "Makenai Kokoro" (Undefeated Heart), started. It's neither as sweeping as the <em>PSO</em> opening theme, "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6Ufyp3F4tU">The Whole New World</a>," nor as goofily enjoyable as Phantasy Star Universe's disco-style theme "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QsZ5SvyHqg">Save This World</a>". But we're nitpicking. The theme can <em>certainly</em> be endured long enough to see the lovely gameplay footage in the last half of the video.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/gorgeous-phantasy-star-zero-animated-short-less-gorgeous-theme/">Gorgeous Phantasy Star Zero animated short, less gorgeous theme song</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST. Not only do we have the first two non-scanned shots of the game in our gallery below, and the first trailer after the break, but the official website has more action shots, as well as a beautiful downloadable wallpaper that features the aforementioned concept art. If Square Enix is trying to whip us into a froth for this one, well, it's working. Not that they have to do much to get us going. <br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/first-screens-and-video-from-blood-of-bahamut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First screens and video from Blood of Bahamut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/first-screens-and-video-from-blood-of-bahamut/">First screens and video from Blood of Bahamut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 11:00:00 EST. The mystery game, as seen in this blurry screenshot, is <span style="font-style: italic;">Blood of Bahamut</span>, an action RPG with four-player local co-op play and 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. Oh, and it looks a bit like <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadow of the Colossus</span>, though that's more of an observation than a criticism. We're not going to sling mud at any game that is inspired by <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadow of the Colossus</span>, because <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadow of the Colossus</span> is <span style="font-style: italic;">freakin' brilliant</span>.<br /><br />Anyhow, <span style="font-style: italic;">Shadow</span>, sorry, <span style="font-style: italic;">Blood of Bahamut</span> will feature two protagonists, Ibuki and Yui, who live in a city constructed on the back of a giant. On paper, that sounds great -- they'd get lovely views and lots of fresh air, for example -- but their giant keeps getting attacked by other hefty enemies, who they have to ward off. And to think the agent said such good things about the neighbors.<br /><br /><a href="http://ruliweb2.empas.com/ruliboard/read.htm?num=22015&amp;table=game_nds&amp;main=nds">Ruliweb</a> has the full scans, but we also recommend feasting your eyes on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/blood-of-bahamut/1156308/full/">this exceptional concept art</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.finalfantasyunion.com/news/blood-of-bahamut-confirmed-for-nintendo-ds--59.html">Final Fantasy Union</a>; Thanks, Darryl!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/shonen-jump-spills-blood-of-bahamut-details/">Shonen Jump spills Blood of Bahamut details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 11:30:00 EST. Most of what we've seen of Jaleco's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/02/get-up-close-to-ougon-no-kizuna/"><em>Ougon no Kizuna</em></a> has involved <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/more-giant-bosses-in-ougon-no-kizuna/">big, big bosses</a>. But while fighting huge hulks is an important part of the game, it's also characterized by much smaller tasks involving (generally) smaller characters, who then form "bonds" with Lian, the protagonist. The formation of these bonds affects the game's storyline.<br /><br /><em>Famitsu</em> has introduced two of <em>Kizuna's</em> 100 subquests. The first involves helping a girl named Aliche pass her test to become a water priestess, and the second seems to involve training a group of soldiers called "Resolvers" who are currently being trained in a less-than-serious manner.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/11/ougon-no-kizunas-smaller-quests/">Ougon no Kizuna's smaller quests</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 18:13:00 EST. We've quickly translated the visible options; there aren't any real surprises, but we at least know that there are three different aspects of the character costumes that can change color, that the player can change the color of the floating "mag" robot, and that there are multiple selectable voices like in <em>Phantasy Star Universe</em>!<br /><br />Other screens show a party gathering and calling out for a Photon Blast (a charged attack that could be combined in <em>Phantasy Star Online</em>) and the boxart, which is a delight.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/a-brief-look-at-character-creation-in-phantasy-star-zero/">A brief look at character creation in Phantasy Star Zero</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Atlus/">Atlus</a> will publish Interchannel's DS remakes of the endlessly remade first two <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/atlus-bringing-ys-on-ds-to-north-america/"><em>Ys</em> games</a> to North America next year. Japanese gamers are pretty familiar with Falcom and their venerable ARPG series, but it never really caught on outside of Japan, despite a decent number of releases making it over here on the Sega Master System, Turbografx-16 CD-Rom, Super NES, and other systems.<br /><br />How familiar are you with <em>Ys?</em> Did you pass over the Virtual Console release in anticipation of the announcement of this DS game? Did that recent release pique your curiosity about the series? Or has Atlus's involvement gotten your attention? Alternately, you <em>love</em> these two games so much that you'll pick them up on every available system?<br /><br />[Wallpaper found <a href="http://www.icholon.co.jp/ds/ys/">here</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/ds-daily-ys-or-no/">DS Daily: Ys or no</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 09:00:00 EST. Using stylus drawings to relay information to your team-mates is certainly an original and novel approach, but is it the best? Wouldn't the speed and efficiency of voice chat suit Sonic Team's RPG more?<br /><br />While none of the staff are <em>violently opposed</em> to the idea of visual chat <em>or</em> voice chat, each certainly has it merits. But they lack one important component for most of us: coherent text. Nintendo World Report snapped pictures of English-language move charts at TGS.<br /><br />The five separate control guides completely <em>shatter</em> the notion that the game's controls would be simplified in the transition to Wii. The <em>MH3</em> controls don't look <em>overcomplicated,</em> just complicated. Every button is used, some in multiple ways. Different weapons have subtly different control schemes. Interestingly, there are different controls for "sub-aqua," so it must be more than just walking around on the bottom of the sea.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/tgs08-monster-hunter-3-controls-now-in-english/">TGS08: Monster Hunter 3 controls: now in English!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 16:25:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rising-star-games">Rising Star Games</a> just unfurled an official list of Marvelous games that it plans to localize for Europe, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-luminous-arc-2-screens-add-a-dose-of-hilarity/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Luminous Arc 2</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-from-mop-tops-to-monsters-avalon-code-looks-the-part/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Avalon Code</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/rune-factory-2-preorder-bonus-is-nuts/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Rune Factory 2</span></a>, and a fourth game that is yet to be announced for North America: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/07/smuggling-new-steal-princess-screens/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Steal Princess</span></a>. Luckily for those of us who wanted to read previews of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/tgs08-monster-hunter-3-features-classic-controller-support-spl/"><em>Monster Hunter 3</em></a>, Capcom held a private demo session for foreign press, allowing people to actually <em>see the thing</em> and not just stare dumbfounded at the insane line. Wired's Jean Snow got a chance to play the guaranteed multi-million seller, and brought back not-entirely-great news.<br /><br />He calls the graphics "fine for a Wii title," which is a far cry from the eye-popping beauty we've seen in screens and video. That's not bad.
