Beginning today and running through November 5, there are three new tasks for players to take on to earn a special holiday reward: Players need to run five extractions on the Firebase Ghost map (or its Hazard version), earn 7500 points against zombies (also known as husks or abominations in the Mass Effect parlance) and earn 10,000 points against monsters (which includes brutes, scions, praetorians, and banshees). Completing the tasks on any difficulty will earn players a Halloween Challenge Banner.

What's too bad is that you won't get the Halloween-themed characters teased above to join your gang. Bioware doesn't say, but we're pretty sure they're crew members for some other Mass Effect 3 team, maybe helmed by one Commander SCARE-perd of the USS Norman-DIE! Boooooo! [Ed. Halo: Reach isn't even out in stores, but IGN has already found a way to exploit part of the game for the sake of easy Achievements. In this video, its outlines a surefire method for farming up a good amount of the game's cheevos by tweaking the customized Firefight system to be really hard and then giving yourself invincibility. Which means "you can basically shoot around in circles, and get massive amounts of points." Seems like fun ... we guess?

If nothing else, this shows off just how customizable the multiplayer system in Reach actually is. Bungie has made it so that the priority is coming up with fun gametypes with your friends, not just tweaking for as many points towards Achievement as possible. Not that we don't appreciate sweet, sweet cheevos, but that's not the only reason we're Firefighting against the Covenant, right? Right?
Continue reading Video: Halo: Reach Achievements made easy (and cheat-y)

Video: Halo: Reach Achievements made easy (and cheat-y) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 20:40:00 EST. Valve has released a new patch for Portal on Steam, and the patch notes say only that it has "changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations." A curious note, especially since Portal, as a computer game, doesn't actually transmit anything over the radio. That got the forum train a'moving on the Steam boards, and they eventually discovered that radios have been added to each level of the game which, when carried to the correct spots in each level, will tune in a series of coded messages. Connecting to all (or any, according to some reports) of the 26 messages in the game will supposedly unlock a new hidden achievement called "Transmission Received." At least, we think so -- as of this writing, no one seems to have unlocked it yet.

Some of the messages are morse codes that range from the technical ("External data line active") to the silly ("Beep beep beep beep"), and some are encoded images of numbers and equations ("B.dA=3"), but the whole thing appears to be hinting that AI antagonist GLaDOS may have transmitted information or part of herself out of the Aperture Science facility before the first game ended. Which would probably mean that a sequel reveal is imminent. We'll stay tuned for more information -- we didn't really expect to hear from Valve at GDC next week, but a Portal 2 reveal would make our San Francisco visit that much nicer.

[Thanks, Rob!]
Specifically, questions that inquire about non-gaming achievements (like watching a certain amount of DVDs), having them unlock in-game content and even pitches the concept of having a virtual "in-game way to view your Achievements list." Similar to the proposed PlayStation 3 Trophy Room in Home.

Seeing how much we adore the 360's achievements, we're willing to support most any plan (gaming related or not) to expand the number of ways we can increase our Gamerscore. Most of the survey questions are good ideas, except for the one that asks about swapping pop-up messages for environment based notifications. Bad idea. Removing the iconic bleep-bloop would be an unforgivable sin.

[Via Kombo]
Rumor: MS survey mentions non-gaming achievements originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 22:15:00 EST. The reason: Achievements and their respective Gamerscores aren't really standardized, meaning that Gamerscore often fails to be a true depiction of a person's gaming talent.

Based on the idea that the harder an achievement is to unlock (no matter its Gamerscore value) the more points it should be worth, TrueAchievements uses a formula that takes into account how many players unlocked a specific achievement. Compared to the game's total population, a difficulty multiplier is calculated. The multiplier is figured into the game's Gamerscore and -- presto! -- a new, more accurate way to calculate a person's skill ensues.

Those who earned all the Avatar achievements will be humbled to know that it's the game with the lowest TrueAchievement value.
New Xbox achievement site looks to standardize accomplishments originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 13:00:00 EST.
In spite of the immense popularity enjoyed by its predecessor, Gears of War 2 hasn't been able to climb atop the Xbox Live activity charts. Perhaps a few more Achievement points will change things up. Xbox.com has an updated list of Achievements for the game, bumping up the available Gamerscore to 1175. The official Fable 2 Achievements have been unveiled, and it appears the previous rumor from August was pretty accurate. Even The Swinger (i.e. "Take part in a debauched bedroom party with several participants.") is still in there. However, there's an added note in about 30 of the Achievements, specifying the ability to earn them simply by watching someone else (i.e. another hero in a world you visit via online co-op) fulfill the requirement. Despite the lack of surprise, we are genuinely excited to being rather vice-full in our quest to obtain all 1000 Gamerscore points.

[Via X3F]
Unlock Fable 2 Achievements by seeing, not doing originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Sep 2008 01:40:00 EST. A rumor in Game Informer (full text from GI after the break) states that Gamerscores and achievements will be transferable to Microsoft's next console. As far a rumors go, this is one many Xbox 360 owners might pray Microsoft wouldn't prevent from becoming a reality.

Achievements and Gamerscores are two features of the Xbox 360 that have developed a strong following, particularly among "ch33vo-holics." We can already imagine the internet <strike>hissy-fit temper-tantrum</strike> freak out we'll see if the Xbox faithful can't transfer their data. Although the next console is still years away, it would be unfortunate to envision Microsoft not allowing gamers to transfer their data effortlessly to the next system.

[Via X3F]
Continue reading Rumor: Gamerscores transferring to next Xbox console

Rumor: Gamerscores transferring to next Xbox console originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 May 2008 03:00:00 EST. For the thorough achievement hunter, there are an elite series of Gamerscore garnering goals that the softcore gamer is not likely to possess, such as Dead Rising's Zombie Genocider achievement, or, well, most of the achievements from Chromehounds. One stands out above the rest, though, requiring a great deal of time and skill to earn -- the "Seriously" achievement from Gears of War. Getting 10,000 kills in ranked multiplayer earns you 50 Gamerpoints, and hopefully, a concerned intervention from a few of your closest loved ones.

Bizarre Creations' latest project The Club gives a hearty nod towards the life-consuming achievement with one of their own -- the cleverly titled "No, Seriously" requires you to kill 10,001 opponents in ranked online matches. Oh, we see what you did there. We'll have to wait until Feb. 19 to see if the game is good enough to merit that kind of time investment, and if Bizarre ripped anything else off of Gears -- such as a steroid-infused protagonist that speaks with the eloquence of Tourette's suffering sailor.
The Club nods at Gears of War's 'Seriously' achievement originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Readers may recall that Turok was to include an achievement called "Grab Bag" that rewarded players for killing their own team members. Specifically, players had to kill "at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself in the same round of a public match." With griefing players already ruining multiplayer games everywhere, gamers were naturally upset when Turok's developers decided to actually reward them for it. Thankfully though, the devs at Propaganda have seen the light and will be altering the achievement with a launch day patch for the game. The achievement will remain in the game after the patch, but will now only require players to kill a creature, an enemy, and themselves. So it's mostly fixed, but don't be surprised if your teammates are constantly throwing grenades at their feet.

[Via Joystiq]

Team kill achievement in Turok is no more originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 10:45:00 EST. Players can use the free service to keep track of a range of quantifiable game performance details. We're not quite sure what to make of the service, since an Xbox Live Gamertag does nearly the same thing on a platform basis, albeit Xbox only. (We see overlap with Steam too, for another heavy competitor.)

We'll give the site some hope, however, since it's signed a wide roster of EA, Activision, Capcom, and Sega for launch titles. Those games are Battlefield 2 (PC), Guitar Hero III (Wii, 360, PS3), Lost Planet (360), and Universe at War (PC, 360). The site combines stats from all of those games into a single user profile. It'll also strip Gamertag data into its service.

GameStrata aims to bathe geeks in delicious data to keep them away from in-game -- and community-based -- competitors. Co-founder Barry Dorf takes exception to our classification, saying via email, "We do not see the space as having competitors, only partners. There are publishers that track stats and some that do not. We do not believe the publishers that are tracking stats are at the granular level we want them to be, or they want to be. Where do I rank in the first chorus during Sabotage in GH3 on Medium, or how many headshots did I make last week in Battlefield 2, and where did it rank amongst those stats?"

Those details run deep, letting gamers graph performance over time -- say, kills with a certain weapon -- and compare it to friends. Players can also broadcast a syndicated news feed to update competitors with their latest achievements.
Continue reading GameStrata statistic site launches, get PWN3D via graphs

GameStrata statistic site launches, get PWN3D via graphs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 06:38:00 EST. After reviewing concerns about its Xbox achievement choices, Propaganda games says it'll consider removing the "team kill" award after the Turok launch early next year. Although CVG reports in its headline "Turok dev to scrap team kill achievement," the quote from Propaganda VP Josh Holmes is actually, "We are currently looking at readying a patch or solution for it if it does become an issue when the game releases" (um, looks like somebody forgot to read the story before writing the headline). That's not a definitive statement that Propaganda will nix the controversial achievement, but merely acknowledgment that the developer will consider doing so after the game releases.

Actually, a few statements made by Holmes in the interview are a little frightening. For example, he says that the team kill achievement -- which gives ten points for killing one creature, enemy, teammate and yourself in a single round -- was originally created as a joke because they found that players in their first Turok match met all the criteria. That's not exactly a confidence builder.

Turok developer may consider removing team kill achievement originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 14:25:00 EST. David Dreger, better known to the Xbox community by his gamertag "Knuckles Dawson," finally saw the end to his 681-day Xbox achievement streak on Oct. 4. Dreger tells why it happened in his latest Achievement 101 feature on sister-site X3F. After receiving MVP status from Microsoft on Oct. 1., he finally made the decision to stop -- but it took another few days for it to actually happen. Dreger received at least one achievement on his Xbox 360 gamertag every day from Nov. 22, 2005 until Oct. 4, 2007.

Dreger, who is also a co-host on sister-site X3F's podcast, says he's accomplished all that he wanted to with the achievement streak. What finally made him stop his streak was a good game of Halo 3 with a friend while they were on the level "The Way the World Ends." Dreger says he's still interested in getting achievements as he is a self-proclaimed "achievement whore," but now is focusing on simpler tasks like getting his score to 54,321, to mirror when he had 12,345. Y'know, just for the heck of it.
How a 681-day achievement streak comes to an end originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 14:27:00 EST. Welcome to another edition of the weekly Gamerscore whoring extravaganza, X3F Achievements 101. As usual, I'll discuss the last week in unlocking Achievements, or discuss any news that's especially pertinent to the Achievement obsessed. Unfortunately, this week was pretty light, with E3 just around the corner, there wasn't much spare time to grind through any games. I didn't rent anything this week, but I did get my feet wet with Rainbow Six: Vegas, as well as made a couple discoveries whilst playing some Arcade titles locally with friends.

X3F Achievements 101: Pre-E3 lull originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Jul 2007 22:00:00 EST. Welcome back to another edition of X3F Achievements 101, complete with Gamerscore whoring goodness. This week we take a look at finishing up Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, a very quick look at the ever distracting and delicious Darkness, as well as some personal Achievements, while not exactly adding any value to my Gamerscore, are still pretty cool little accomplishments that occurred over the past week. All in all, it was a solid week, with a few minor hiccups that'll you'll have to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: Dark Pirates

X3F Achievements 101: Dark Pirates originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 12:30:00 EST. So the previous week has come to a close and I'm back with another glorious edition of X3F Achievements 101. The past seven days had some serious grinding behind it as I finished off the amazingly tedious Eragon. Hopefully Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End be a third time's charm for film-to-game adaptations. I'll also give my interpretation of the release of the Halo 3 Achievements, which took the interwebs by surprise this week. Either way, there's a lot to cover from the past week, so let's get started.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: Dragonriding Swashbucklers

X3F Achievements 101: Dragonriding Swashbucklers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Jun 2007 20:45:00 EST. Welcome back to another edition of X3F Achievements 101, where we take a look at the last 7 days in Achievement whoring of yours truly and any observations or interesting tidbits that got discovered along the way. This week saw a good jump in Gamerscore, as I plowed through a couple of mediocre games with some straightforward Achievements, along with others that require special attention to obtain. So, we'll take a look at Superman Returns, Eragon, and touch on a teensy bit of Shadowrun.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: Superagon Returns

X3F Achievements 101: Superagon Returns originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jun 2007 19:45:00 EST. After being having one of the two good demos release on Marketplace last week, Xbox 360 Achievements got their hands on Overlord's Achievements. The first thing that caught our eye was that there are two Achievements for how much or little Corruption your character has, one for maxing it out, and the other for having none, so being a good-bad guy is going to be required for the completionists out there. Also worth noting are the ranked multiplayer Achievements, and "Mistress Master", where you essentially let her wear the pants of the relationship and do her bidding. Are you looking forward to torching some halflings later this month?
Overlord Achievements awakened originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 08:30:00 EST. X3F Achievements 101 is back, and on its regularly scheduled time slot of Sundays. Initial response to our first edition was rather positive, so we're glad you like the concept and hope you enjoy reading, and even participating in the column. Emails with Achievement tips also came in at a good pace, and I look forward to playing and trading with you. One particular email stood out, which came from Casey over at brains-N-brawn.com, and the steps he took to get Achievements in one of the most time consuming Arcade games, Bejeweled 2.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities

X3F Achievements 101: Bots, Bosses and Babalities originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 01:30:00 EST. Welcome to X3F Achievements 101, a new column here at Xbox 360 Fanboy, where I get to discuss one of my favorite Xbox 360 features: Achievements, and the whoring found therein. Each week I'll be bringing you my take on the latest Achievement news, as well as my quest in both my Achievement streak, and any specific Achievements I'm working on. Not only that, but you get to participate, as I'll be giving you a means to contact me, so we can work together on getting Achievements. So read on, as I start off by taking a look at one of the coolest Achievements to come out of a personal favorite, Shadowrun.
Continue reading X3F Achievements 101: The First One!

X3F Achievements 101: The First One! originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. Xbox 360 Achievements, the sly dogs, got their hands on the Achievement list for Starbreeze Studios' comic book adaption, The Darkness. Upon looking at the 50 Achievements available you can tell that there is a heavy emphasis on the multiplayer aspect of the game which we definitely like to see, although we can't tell if these require to be in ranked games in order to be unlocked, or if they can be performed in public matches. Our favorite from the list, would easily be "Knuckle, Meet Face", for indulging in your first melee kill. What's yours?
Achievements come out of the ... er ... Upcoming Online RPG Two Worlds had its 41 Achievements revealed today, at IGN, of all places. Either way it seems to be the standard fair of objectives. At the very least, one would have to agree that it certainly seems far more obtainable than Final Fantasy XI's current set. Also worth noting is the final Achievement of "Defeated the Grand Enemy" has the <strike>second</strike> third highest Gamerscore worth of 370 points, next Madden NFL 06's "Complete 30 Years of Franchise", for 400 GS, and 2006 FIFA World Cup's "Complete all Scenarios", a 500-pointer. Are you going to be unlocking away next month in Two Worlds?
Two Worlds Achievements revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2007 16:30:00 EST. Yesterday, Xbox360Achievements.org posted complete achievement lists for a few upcoming games including family friendly Ratatouille and the messy DiRT. Ratatouille offers a bunch of objective based achievements with nothing overly spectacular, except for the "Beat Hoisting the Hefty Weight" which caught our eye. DiRT's achievements are rather bland too, nearly a yawn-fest until we spotted the "First Clean Race" achievement. That achievement will be impossible for those of us who like to play dirty. Also, take a gander through Aegis Wing's achievements and focus on getting a few friends together to earn the "Epic Warrior" achievement. Hooking up four players has never been so rewarding.
The cool thing is because of the lack of ranked matches, unless specified, you'll be able to get Achievements in private games with your friends. Last month we furnished you with the agility orb sound clip from Crackdown and today we have another clip for your downloading pleasure. The generous Major Nelson went out of his way to get the community a clip of the greatest sound that has ever graced the Xbox 360 ... the achievement unlocked sound. It's short and sweet, but any fanboy will know that this sound can make grown men break down in tears. This sound makes us gamers froth from the mouth, perspire profusely, and shake violently all because we know our gamerscore just increased. It's truly that enjoyable. So, be sure to download it and feel free to share with us how you'll be using your new achievement unlocked sound clip.
Achievement unlocked, now download the sound originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 16:30:00 EST. Getting all 1000 gamerscore points doesn't look all that hard either, because simply beating the game will get you 800 points. Also, it looks like Ubisoft decided to not make all the achievements have a nice rounded gamerscore point total, opting for annoying ambiguous numbers. And overall, these are still pretty lackluster achievements with no creative flair ... hopefully they put a little more thought into the game than they did into its achievements.

[Thanks, Peter J]
Cowabunga! For the next hour, if you've got a copy of NBA Live '07, turn that puppy on, it may be the best chance to get the "1,000 People Online" achievement. The achievement is worth 100 points. The event was promoted by Achieve360points.com. It is going on right now, and here's the simplest way to lay it out:

February 10th at 5:00 to 6:00 pm (Pacific)

February 10th at 6:00 to 7:00 pm (Mountain)

February 10th at 7:00 to 8:00 pm (Central)

February 10th at 8:00 to 9:00 pm (Eastern)

February 11th at 1:00 to 2:00 am (United Kingdom)

February 11th at 10:00 to 11:00 am (Japan)

Even after you gain the achievement, stay on. Remember, you got 999 people to thank for your easily gained, but ridiculously conceived, achievement.

[Update 1: Apparently the event was a success. Admittedly, the implementation hasn't changed much since we first previewed Vista nearly a year ago. Even so, from a GUI-perspective, Vista features a user-friendly central location for cataloging, accessing, and tweaking (settings, parental controls, updating, etc.) GFW-branded games -- non-GFW games won't necessarily be excluded, but they won't feature many of the required functionalities built into the branded titles.

Games for Windows is still very much a vision. The first priority, a retail initiative, is currently underway. By employing marketing strategies used by console makers, namely platform-branding, Microsoft hopes that PC gaming (under the 'Games for Windows' banner) will become less intimidating to mainstream consumers -- no longer will the PC games isle be a cluttered mess of disparate titles. Computer Gaming World was also renamed as Games For Windows to help drive Microsoft's new brand. Aside from retail consolidation, this branding will ensure certain requirements are met by games' publishers. To earn the GFW brand, a title must comply with certain Microsoft-tested specifications, including widescreen support, compatibility with the Xbox 360 controller, parental control features, and simple installation. GFW games will also begin to carry a system rating, based on a 5-point scale. Vista will assess the value of your PC's gaming abilities and assign a rating (or "WinSAT"), say 4.5. You can then weigh that rating against a game's recommended rating (example: 5.0) and its required rating (example: 3.5) before purchasing. Update: The scale will begin at five points, but is designed to grow as newer technologies enter the market.
Continue reading Games for Windows Vista: how the new brand & OS will change PC gaming [update 1]

Games for Windows Vista: how the new brand & OS will change PC gaming [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 11:55:00 EST. While excluded from Sony's aforementioned scoring system, third-party publishers will have the option to include their own achievement-like rewards, "on a game-by-game basis."
No gamerscore, no achievements on PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Oct 2006 19:55:00 EST.
We've been hearing of a bushel ofdefects with just-released Xbox 360 title Oblivion IV, most of them relatively harmless. But this one's a realzinger because it allows players to stop leveling altogether and simply play the equivalent of a medieval playboy.

Shall we elaborate? What happens when you couple unlimited gold with a level one character's limitedjudgement? Wanton carousal, all-night mead keggers, illegitimate NPCs spawning all over the place, and legions of trustfund kids who forego the noble professions of blacksmithing, shoe-mending, and inn-keeping for jobs in architecture, museum curation, and film studies research.

The world of Tamriel is going to look an awful lot like Manhattanisland if this defect isn't patched, quick.
