The British developer, better known for putting armaments in the (supposed) hands of invertebrates, first released this top-down shooter on the good old Amiga in 1991, the game inspired heavily by a certain big screen franchise.

The PSN re-release features cross-platform multiplayer between Vita and PS3, as well as ad-hoc/local and online co-op on respective platforms. New packs Convergence, Valiance, and Synergy bring up the total level count to 30, there's the option to play with original or enhanced visuals, and leaderboards are there for those who are competitive when it comes to extraterrestrial carnage.

Team 17 resurrected the Alien Breed franchise after over a decade with the downloadable isometric shooter Evolution in 2009, and that was soon followed by two sequel episodes. The original Alien Breed then came to iOS in August 2012, and Team 17 is now telling fans to "watch this space" for an announcement of an Android release.

Gallery: Alien Breed (PSN)

Original Alien Breed infests PS3 and Vita early next month originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Jan 2013 12:45:00 EST. Don't worry, it's just a name -- these games are actually developed by a team of humans, not cultivated in some kind of game breeding operation.

It comes to PS3 as a downloadable PSN game, with the same $9.99 price point as the Xbox release, and includes 35 Trophies, one of which is a Platinum. If you'd like to catch up before Descent, the first two Alien Breeds are on sale on PSN this week.
Continue reading Alien Breed 3 propagates to PSN next week

Alien Breed 3 propagates to PSN next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 12:40:00 EST. We're hard-pressed to call a book full of concept art for Alien Breed: Impact created by clearly talented artists "kinda nasty," but, well, part of it features images of gross bugs and stuff. More to the point: gross alien bug things.
You come to Joystiq for the scoops, and we've got a dilly for you. The ESRB has recently posted a listing for Alien Breed 2: Assault, presumably the follow-up to Team 17's Alien Breed: Evolution for 360. Scooped! ... Well, you probably want to put this news up on your Tweetos or FaceZone, so we'll leave you to it.

... What's that? You say that Alien Breed was announced as a trilogy, so a listing for a second one is about as surprising as a sunrise or a Lady Gaga image reinvention? You say that we're desperate to make anything a news story because it's Memorial Day, and everyone's busy grilling meat and memorializing things, not making games?

Well, great, now you've made things uncomfortable for everybody. Look at Ludwig, he ran off to his room because you hurt his feelings so much. Look Deborah -- can we just not do this today? Can we, for once, spend a holiday eating our Jell-O salad in silence and acting like a family? For once?
Alien Breed 2: Assault rated by ESRB originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 May 2010 19:30:00 EST. Team17 has revealed that Alien Breed: Impact, the expanded version of Alien Breed: Evolution, will be released on Steam in June 3. The game will sell for $14.99 in the US, £12.99 in the UK, and either €11.25 or €14.99 in other regions of Europe. Those who pre-order will receive a 10 percent discount as well as "an exclusive in-game digital comic, chronicling the troubled back-story of the game's hero, Conrad, the doomed space vessel's Chief Engineer."

To help you make that purchasing decision, Team17 has released an Alien Breed: Impact demo, which includes single-player and online co-op. There's also a new trailer, which you can watch right here.
Alien Breed: Impact on Steam June 3, pre-order bonuses detailed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Team17 Software, best known for its Worms games, is bringing an expanded version of Alien Breed: Evolution to PC and PS3 this summer. Alien Breed: Impact takes the original XBLA game and adds "suggestions from the community," such as weapons upgrades, increased difficulty, and a new "Prologue" campaign for newcomers to the franchise.

Like its predecessor, the top-down shooter is powered by Unreal Engine 3, and will be distributed digitally via Steam and PlayStation Network. Expect both versions of Impact to arrive this summer.
The choice is yours, whether it be Tecmo's Puzzlegeddon or Team17's Alien Breed Evolution. Either game will set you back 800 Microsoft Space Bucks (ten earth dollars), so it boils down to preference. Frankly, we've always been fans of mowing down waves of alien scum, but destroying your friends via brightly colored blocks has its charms too. Check out the latest XBLA in Brief and see which one speaks to you.
Having already dated the timed-exclusive XBLA debut of Alien Breed Evolution -- it will land on December 16 -- Team17 has told GamerZines when PC and PS3 owners can expect the game. According to Team17's Mark Baldwin, Alien Breed Evolution will hit PCs sometime in the first quarter of 2009, while the PS3 version will arrive in the second quarter. Elaborating, Baldwin said the PC version should be available "sometime before March." Meanwhile, PS3 owners "will have to wait as long as perhaps June."
Team17 has previously stated that exclusivity is "just the way the world works," noting that Microsoft had a lot of early faith in the title. The first of three planned episodes, the game will offer both single-player and co-op play. Team17 revealed earlier this year that each episode would contain a prologue and five full levels, lasting roughly five to eight hours altogether. Each episode will also include a cooperative battle mode. At the Eurogamer Expo -- in Europe! -- Team17 has revealed its plans for the episodic structure of its upcoming downloadable title, Alien Breed Evolution. It was previously revealed that the game would be released in three separate episodes, and now Team17's John Dennis explains that each episode will contain a prologue and five levels that are "much larger than they should have been." In addition, each episode contains two major "set pieces" -- large scripted events -- as well as two boss battles and a multiplayer level. Each episode should last five to eight hours.

The first episode of Alien Breed Evoluation should release fairly soon, as it was originally slated for "around October." The XBLA version will enjoy an unknown period of exclusivity before the PSN and PC versions are released.
Team17 details Alien Breed episodes structure originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. When I saw that Team 17's upcoming Alien Breed Evolution was playable at Microsoft's pre-PAX shindig, I leapt at the chance to try it out. As a huge fan of the Worms series, I really wanted to give Alien Breed Evolution a go. After spending a few minutes with the game -- which appeared to be the trial version of the XBLA game -- I have to admit I was disappointed. That's not to say it's bad, but it failed to elicit that instant 'click' of the Worms series.
"I appreciate PS3 owners getting pissed off because it's not on their platform immediately, but that's up to Sony I guess to address that," Team17 studio head Martyn Brown said in a recent interview with VideoGamer.com. According to Brown, exclusivity is just a fact of life. "People on Live Arcade can't play Super Stardust [HD] or PAIN or a bunch of titles ... it's just the way the world works really." he added. Addressing concerns that his company was paid off by Microsoft for the timed exclusivity of Alien Breed Evolution on XBLA, Brown answered ... "bollocks" (British for "nonsense"). Instead, Brown credited the exclusivity deal to "early faith" from the publisher.

Specifically, Brown stated, "In exchange for exclusivity we get a lot more promotion ... it isn't the case of here's some cash in a suitcase, It just doesn't work like that -- It would be nice if it did!" No suitcases full of bank notes, Mr. Brown? Oh, that's right, GTA IV's exclusive DLC used up all of Microsoft's petty cash for a bit. Sorry, guy!
While Team 17's upcoming Alien Breed renewal, Alien Breed Evolution, will be coming to XBLA, PSN and PC, VG247 has learned that the game will be arriving on XBLA a bit earlier than the other two. "It will come to PS3 and it will come to PC as well, but initially it'll be Live Arcade," Team 17's Martyn Brown said.

Why not release on all three platforms simultaneously from the get go? Brown says it has to do with Microsoft giving Team 17 a chance before anyone else would. "They showed a lot of faith in us early doors [British for "early on"] and that's kind of kept going really," Brown notes. He even goes as far as to call the relationship a "first-party publishing relationship" (which is the case for Team 17's other franchise, Worms, but not Alien Breed). Hey, Microsoft, you trying to put a ring on that finger?
Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton, England today, Team17 leader Martyn Brown described his studio's forthcoming digital release, Alien Breed Evolution, as a trilogy -- "one of the most expensive digital titles to-date," too -- according to GamesIndustry.biz. Said to be costing in the realm of $2.5 million to develop, Team17's Unreal remake of its Amiga shooter will be distributed in three parts, spanning an estimated 15 hours of gameplay. The first "episode" will include three, one-hour levels and an additional three-hour, co-op scenario, and is scheduled to hatch on Xbox Live Arcade around October and destined for PSN at a later date, confirmed VG247.

The underlying message of Brown's presentation, titled "10 Things Nobody Tells You About Digital Distribution and Self-publishing That You Must Understand to Succeed," seemed to be one of caution, as summarized by Gamasutra. Brown dispelled much of the get-rich-quick myth of independent, digital development -- and publishing. Sure, one in a billion basement programmers might strike gold, but to enjoy lasting success, as Team17 has for nearly two decades, expect to spend money to make money and employ a staff with a "wide variety of skills" (a team of 30 or so is currently working on Alien Breed, for example). Brown warned, "if you don't know something, get someone who does, because you will not be able to wing it."

Developer Team17 loves its Facebook page. This morning the company announced a "retro modern remake" of Alien Breed, one of its games from way back in 1991. Alien Breed Evolution is an Unreal Engine 3-powered shooter, which can be played solo or co-op later this year. A representative for Team 17 tells us that a video of the game should be released in two to three weeks.

Team17 also teased that iPhone Worms "looms... not long now." There is currently a tentative date, but the developer is awaiting the go from Apple. Like a good Worm, though, Team 17 has everything locked, loaded and ready to fire when ready.
Team17 announces Alien Breed Evolution, teases imminent iPhone Worms originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 11:10:00 EST. No longer slave to its garden variety artillery game, Team17 has pledged to revisit its classic Amiga series, Alien Breed, based on <strike>the popular Alien film franchise</strike> a totally original idea. The upcoming sequel (or perhaps remake) was confirmed with a new logo, above, first posted on videogaming247. Late last month, Spong published an exchange with studio head Martyn Brown, which indicates that Alien Breed will be a self-published, downloadable title. We're speculating that Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, and PC are the likely targets, with WiiWare a distant possibility. "We're doing it with a budget far in excess of anything that has been spent anywhere on a digital title to date," Brown reportedly said. Alien (the New) Breed is expected for release within the next 12 months.
Team17 confirms Alien Breed resurrection originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Sep 2008 17:00:00 EST.
