Boulder Dash-XL heading to iOS

First Star Software and HeroCraft have announced plans to co-publish Boulder Dash-XL on iOS devices, which will launch "soon" for $2.99. The latest game in the long-running series was last seen on XBLA in July 2011.

The core gameplay, according to HeroCraft, will remain the same as always: players race through caves while collecting diamonds and defeating enemies. Boulder Dash-XL for iOS includes two playable characters, five game modes, four worlds, over 100 caves, and "lots of diamonds and fun."

We've already reviewed Ms. 'Splosion Man, and we're currently cranking away on Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, which leaves only one Xbox Live Arcade game this week: Boulder Dash-XL. A sequel to the '80s puzzler, Boulder Dash-XL tasks players with collecting diamonds, avoiding avalanches and reaching the exit.

Boulder Dash XL boldly dashes to XBLA July 13

An HD update of the classic game Boulder Dash is coming to XBLA on July 13 ... just a week shy of the Summer of Arcade promotion, and the same day as Ms. Splosion Man. Ouch. Boulder Dash XL retains the formula from First Star Games' vintage side-scroller, with a treasure hunter searching for diamonds in maze-like caves, avoiding enemies, falling boulders, and traps.

The new version features "7 times the amount of caves as the 1984 original release," publisher Kalypso Media says, along with a new "puzzle mode," items like speed enhancers and telescoping arms, and online leaderboards. In addition to the 800 Microsoft Point Xbox Live Arcade release, a PC version will be released later in the summer. Hopefully for its sake, it won't be overshadowed again by a promotion and a higher-profile release.
