Are people becoming increasingly fearful of the media? It appears so, as an advertisement for Burnout Dominator was deemed too "violent" for the common public to view. In EA's ad for its PS2/PSP racer, an image of a burning car can be seen, with a tag line: "Inner peace through outer violence."

The Advertising Standards Authority commented that "we considered that the images of a car that seemed to have crashed at high speed and a burning tyre, together with a reference to violence, could be seen to condone a violent lifestyle, anti-social behaviour or dangerous driving. We concluded that the ad was irresponsible."

Excuse me? There are far more grotesque and irresponsible advertisements in the media -- why focus on this one? While we understand the effects of advertising are intended to be influential, we highly doubt people will start driving like a Burnout maniac in real life due to this image.

[Via Next-Gen]
Burnout Dominator advertisement causes controversy originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST. Yet another free downloadable track hits Burnout Dominator today. Weeks after the release of "Carnival City," "Red Gate" allows you to boost through the chaotic streets of a Eastern European city at night. The track can be downloaded through the in-game menu, YourPSP, or through EA's official website. If you have wireless internet, we recommend that you do the in-game option: it's much easier. If you don't have wireless internet, download the file from us, and extract the folder into the PSP/SAVEDATA folder on your system.

Kudos to EA for continuing to deliver great, free downloadable content. Let's see other games do the same in the future.

Gallery: Burnout Dominator

Red Gate track now available for Burnout Dominator originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 10:20:00 EST.
Burnout Dominator, EA's latest entry to the famed racing series, is getting a little bit bigger on PSP. New downloadable content is available for the game, available via in-game wi-fi (see video, above). For those without wireless internet, a quick visit to EA's official site will give you access to a brand new track, "Carnival City." It certainly looks great, and the price makes it all the more worthwhille.

EA and AOL are asking drivers what songs make you speed. And they don't just mean 60 in a 55 zone, they want to know what makes you pound the pedal to the metal and drive like you're trying to win the Cannonball Run.

Burnout Dominator already has some decent tracks in it, but the voting shortlist doesn't have much in common with that list. So far drivers have voted up the following songs into the top ten:

1.Guns N Roses - Paradise City
2.Blur - Song 2
3.Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
4.Motorhead - Ace Of Spades
5.The Killers - When We Were Young
6.Feeder - Buck Rogers
7.Prodigy - You Will Be Under My Wheels
8.Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
9.Fall Out Boy - This Ain't A Scene...
10.Soft Cell- Tainted Love

Speed over here to vote on your favorite from this list. But, we were worried: maybe the game looks too much like the previous Burnout games? Surely, explosive car gameplay can't get old ... or can it? Let's see what the critics had to say:

IGN (85/100) thinks it ups the ante from previous Burnout titles ... almost: "The racing is just as adrenaline pumping as it's ever been, and possibly even more so than what we saw in Burnout Revenge as you need to be afraid of traffic once again. However, the lack of standard features and modes like Crash are a rather big disappointment."

Gamespot (82/100) doesn't think Dominator revolutionizes the series, but thinks it's still good: "Burnout Dominator is more Burnout, and that's great. It may not have all the newfangled bells and whistles that you'd want from a sequel, but if you're a fan of the series who absolutely must have new tracks as soon as possible, Dominator should satisfy you nicely."

GameSpy (60/100) thinks it's a clear step backwards for the franchise: "Rather than another true entry in the series, Dominator is a simple C-grade mashup."

You've seen the footage, so you should be able to decide for yourself: does this throwback to the earlier Burnout games do it for you? At least one thing's agreed upon by all three of these critics: get the PSP version instead of the PS2. It looks more impressive, and has slightly more functionality than the console counterpart.
Metareview: Burnout Dominator originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Mar 2007 11:30:00 EST.
Is "Maniac Mode" what the Burnout series needs to feel fresh again? It certainly looks challenging, as evidenced by the trailer above. You'll have to perform burnouts in a continuous chain, creating the franchise's "most challenging" mode yet. It might not be revolutionary, but with pretty graphics, does it really matter? Dominator's release is only a few weeks away now, so Burnout fans should get ready.
Maniac Mode shows off Burnout's mad sense of speed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Mar 2007 12:06:00 EST. And no, it's not Infrastructure support. It's something just as good, we swear! "Girlfriend", Avril Lavigne's latest single will be debuting in EA's latest racer. Some of the artists included in the game's somewhat eclectic soundtrack include: B'z, Filter, Jane's Addiction, Killswitch, N.E.R.D., Sugarcult and Wired All Wrong. "The Burnout series is an amazing, proven platform for launching the world's biggest songs and artists, and we're thrilled to be working with Avril Lavigne this year to help debut her new song "Girlfriend," said Steve Schnur, EA's Worldwide Executive of Music. "From pop to rock to metal Burnout Dominator is all about attitude and rebellion, which makes it a perfect fit for the 33 artists."
Avril Lavigne premieres new song in Burnout Dominator originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 17:05:00 EST. No custom soundtracks here folks, as these are the tracks you'll be clashing your scrape to on the Playstation 2 and PSP.

Don't pooh-pooh their selections just yet! There are plenty of good tracks here from bands like Jane's Addiction, N.E.R.D and Shiny Toy Guns. While the general detail has been knocked down a notch to run on Sony's portable, when everything is blazing at 150mph+ the two editions look very, very similar."

Thankfully, EA hasn't given PSP owners a watered down version in any way. In fact, IGN surprisingly states that the controls are even better on the PSP: "One thing that we noticed in the hour that we spent with the game this morning is that it's actually a little easier on the hands to play than the PlayStation 2 SKU."

That certainly does sound impressive! The game looks to be the most challenging so far, with the new Maniac mode. Nick Channon from EA explains the new feature: "Maniac mode is all about pushing your dangerous driving skills to the limit. The user earns points for driving into oncoming traffic, doing drifts, near misses etc, and the goal is to score as many points as you can, and thus drive as dangerously as you can. The big kicker in the mode is Burnouts - by chaining Burnouts you earn score multipliers which in turn give you massive scores, which you will need in the later levels of the game."

Check out the full interview at IGN. If you read through all the hype, you'll see that the PSP version will feature exclusive downloadable levels. We're assuming that, unlike EA's cheat codes, they'll be free.

It appears that the PSP is the target platform of choice for the game, as Channon reveals the extra effort placed into the handheld outing: "We really believe that we will deliver an intense, next-gen style experience, especially on the PSP ... We've also spent a lot of time working on the handling in the PSP version. It will be incredibly responsive even if you use the D-pad."

Burnout Legends was great, and it appears that Dominator will be even better. The game's coming out in March, so until then, all you have is this trailer of the game in motion.
Burnout Dominator to feature downloadable levels originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 01:15:00 EST. Nick Channon from Criterion Games spoke to Gamespot in a recent interview, and shared a few more details about the upcoming racer:

The game will feature shorter "skill-based" levels, which is "perfect on PSP."

The PSP and PS2 versions will not feature any connectivity with each other.

All multiplayer will be available via ad-hoc (no Infrastructure? Boo!).

Not too revealing, but at least it's something. Expect more updates as this game gets closer.
Criterion talks about Burnout Dominator originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Dec 2006 19:00:00 EST. As previously divulged, the game will be released for PlayStation 2 and PSP (a separate Burnout is in development for PS3 and Xbox 360). Criterion refers to Dominator as a celebration of the franchise's roots, as it debuted on PS2 five years ago -- in other words, there's still a huge install base to reap profits from.

It seems that Dominator will be an inelaborate installment, as neither version features online play (excluding ad hoc support for PSP); and Criterion hasn't bothered with snazzy 'CrossTalk' bonuses. Instead, the developer will include a series of skill-based challenges that highlight the addictive elements of the series.

It's the same ol' crack, but there are still plenty of us smoking. Dominator is due early next year.
Burnout Dominator announced, again originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Dec 2006 20:55:00 EST. Well, it appears that Electronic Arts is giving the Sony current-gen platforms some love through an all new Burnout game called Burnout Dominator. "The series was born on the PlayStation 2, and Burnout Dominator is about celebrating the essence of Burnout," said Nick Channon, Senior Producer of Burnout Dominator.

"Celebrating the essence" of the franchise makes this upcoming game sound a lot like PSP's Burnout Legends, which was an amalgamation of various games from the acclaimed series. Considering how excellent Legends was, PSP gamers have a lot to look forward to.

(Of course, a DS version wasn't announced. Probably because the first DS Burnout was a horrible idea.)

[Via Gamasutra]
New Burnout is a PS2 and PSP exclusive originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Dec 2006 17:10:00 EST. While the tease listing could be written off as a gaffe, more likely, Criterion is looking to double-dip, extending the Burnout franchise in two directions.

Similar to how Legends was released in tandem with Burnout Revenge, Dominator could be paired with the forthcoming open-world Burnout 5. Or, given that a PSP engine has already been built, Dominator could be offered as a quickly assembled appetizer to stave off hungry appetites, buying time for the <strike>next-gen</strike> PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 installment.
