If a recently uncovered rumor is credible, we're not entirely sure these same fans would approve of Infinity Ward's plans to throw the bullet-riddled franchise into the DeLorean, gun it to 88, and take it to <em>where they don't need roads</em>.<br /><br />This rumor (and accompanying clumsy "Back to the Future" reference) finds its origins in a statement from an Infinity Ward insider, <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=191430">who mentioned the company is working on "a sci-fi title"</a>, and that further details concerning said title may or may not be made available during E3. It's extremely possible that Infinity Ward would get their hands back on the <em>Call of Duty</em> franchise once Treyarch has had its way with it, but would they really introduce elements of unrealism into such a history-steeped series, or could they be working on an entirely new, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_marine">space marine-flavored</a> franchise?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/21/rumor-infinity-ward-giving-call-of-duty-6-a-sci-fi-setting/">Rumor: Infinity Ward giving Call of Duty 6 a sci-fi setting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Jun 2008 11:30:00 EST. Well, <em>someone</em> in Sony's software certification lair is having a blast. Infinity Ward community manager "fourzerotwo" has noted on <a href="http://iamfourzerotwo.com/2008/04/07/ps3-dlc-in-certification/">his blog</a> that the $10 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/take-a-video-tour-of-the-call-of-duty-4-variety-map-pack/"><em>Variety Map Pack</em></a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4"><em>Call of Duty 4</em></a>, which hit Xbox 360 last week, has entered the certification process for PlayStation 3. Unless it's discovered that the downloadable content melts console innards, the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/call-of-duty-4-multiplayer-boasts-monstrously-huge-numbers/">monstrously huge</a>" number of PS3 players shouldn't have to wait much longer before getting shot at in the four new environments.<br /><br />Though further details should become apparent later this week, expect the map pack to arrive alongside the PS3 version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/call-of-duty-4-gets-game-of-the-year-edition-next-month/"><em>Call of Duty 4: Game of the Year Edition</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/call-of-duty-4-variety-map-pack-enters-ps3-certification/">Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack enters PS3 certification</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 08:30:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/promotional-consideration/">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br />Though <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-4" style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</a> has sold exceptionally well in North America, topping the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">software charts</a> for its PC and console releases, Activision is smart enough to know that marketing the title in Japan, where the DS is king and first-person shooter sales is an oxymoron, requires a different strategy. <br /><br />The result? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Activision/">Activision</a> actually produced a 30-second spot specifically for the DS version of the multiplatform game ...<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/06/promotional-consideration-commercial-of-duty/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Commercial of Duty</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/06/promotional-consideration-commercial-of-duty/">Promotional Consideration: Commercial of Duty</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 Apr 2008 18:00:00 EST. Take, for example, "Arrested Development" star <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZe_slOFGgY">Will Arnett</a> and "SNL" funnyman <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=S-hKFgmFXIU">Jason Sudeikis</a>, both of whom outed themselves as FPSophiles last week on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien".<br /><br />While we were amused by Arnett's endorsement of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/CallofDuty4/" style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty 4</a> and his tales of domestic disrespect, we think Sudeikis pulled away with a higher chuckle per joke ratio. His friends say that shortly after playing <em>Call of Duty</em> (4, we assume), Hall "just got up and said that he had to go." He was last seen departing his home on a motorcycle, which was later found on the side of a road. The local sheriff's office claims that the man was suffering from hallucinations and flashbacks to his time spent serving in Iraq, where he was injured during a patrol by an exploding bomb, which did tremendous damage to the left side of his body, and reportedly decapitated Hall's best friend in front of his eyes.<br /><br />It's not exactly confirmed that <em>Call of Duty</em> was behind Hall's disappearance -- after all, <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,330225,00.html">we found the story on Fox News</a>, who has a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/25/fox-says-ea-ignored-invite-to-discuss-mass-effect/">less than objective</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/keighley-takes-on-fox-news-sexbox-sexpose/">view of video gaming</a> as a whole. Regardless, we wish Hall's family the best of luck in locating him, though, as Hall's father pointed out, it's tough to find a Marine that doesn't want to be found.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/10/ex-marine-goes-missing-after-call-of-duty-triggered-flashbacks/">Ex-Marine goes missing supposedly after Call of Duty triggered flashbacks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST. Spare a thought for Infinity Ward's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4"><em>Call of Duty 4</em></a> server team, which has been tweaking PlayStation 3 server performance all weekend -- and we're fairly sure that's just as exciting as it sounds. The developer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/11/cod4-dev-becomes-most-popular-gamertag/">world-famous</a> community relations manager, Mr. "fourzerotwo" has posted an update on the <a href="http://www.infinityward.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,2505.0.html">Infinity Ward forums</a> regarding some stability issues encountered by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/call-of-duty-4-suffering-sellout-syndrome/">incoming glut</a> of players. "The server team has been working on this all weekend, and will be working through the night," it reads. "They're upgrading all server hardware as well as dedicated an individual database to each functionality to improve performance and handle the traffic hitting the servers. (i.e. Database for Matchmaking, Database for Leaderboards, etc.)."<br /><br />The end result should be better speed and stability -- at least when it comes to matchmaking. They can't help you if you're still dropping grenades on your toes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/infinity-ward-addressing-call-of-duty-4-ps3-matchmaking-issues/">Infinity Ward addressing Call of Duty 4 PS3 matchmaking issues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 15:55:00 EST. While <em>Modern Warfare</em> finally brings the <em>Call of Duty</em> series into the present day, "the story itself ... isn't exactly cutting edge." (2) "The story unfolds from an unapologetic 'us versus them, and they are wrong' perspective, with little time spent on the larger philosophy of war." (4) "The story fails to provide many twists. There's not much of a guessing game taking place here." (3) "The story flies by so fast," (1) but at the same time, "there are a few too many shell-shocked slow-mo moments that seem to drag." (2)<br /> <strong><br /></strong>There are "no massive renovations in the AI department. ... they're pretty much the clever-clogs Nazis we've shot before." (9) "The enemies aren't the smartest lot, as they are formidable thanks more to their numbers than their IQ." (3) "There are going to be moments when enemies get stuck in dumb routines or stand in the open waiting to be mowed down." (2) "However, some of them have definitely missed their calling as an NFL quarterback -- tossing grenades 100 yards, dropping them right at your feet time and again." (3)<br /><br />Your squad mates are no better. "It is a little annoying when you figure out that your highly trained and specialized team is totally dependant on you in every situation." (8) "There were several moments when it would've helped for my friends to be a little more proactive. Once, when we were flanked by enemies from both sides, Captain Price just sat there, kneeling, waiting for me to make a miracle happen. If he would have popped a few shots at one of the guys so that I could go after the other, that would have helped a lot--not to mention make the game more realistic." <p><em>Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em><br /></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/25/retro-metroid-prime-3-was-all-about-proving-the-controller/">Metroid Prime 3</a></em> has proven indeed that a Wii Remote and Nunchuk is the next best thing to a keyboard and mouse for first person shooting and action. Although we have few FPS titles being developed and released on the Wii (relative to party games and family-friendly content, or the main attraction of a certain <a target="_blank" href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/">other platform</a>), the genre is among the most popular in the scripting community. This is naturally so with FPS being a favored genre among hardcore PC gamers and hardware enthusiasts. </p>
<p>With the recent release of the demo version of <em>Call of Duty 4</em> and its imminent final release, I felt it was time to pick up arms and serve you a script for this spectacular shooter.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/revolutionary-answering-the-call/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: Answering the Call</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/revolutionary-answering-the-call/">Revolutionary: Answering the Call</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 20:00:00 EST. But at a recent hands-on session, the DS take also impressed. The 3D graphics look surprisingly good; after a few minutes of settling in, I stopped scrutinizing textures and focused on the gameplay. And that gameplay carries the title.<br /><br /><em>COD4</em> switches between FPS sequences, helicopter-gunner modes, bomb-disarming moments, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC-130">AC-130 gunship</a> sections. The DS version feels full of care and craft, from thought put into controls, to the segmented sessions that play well on a handheld.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat-ds/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat (DS)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat-ds/#432590"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/cod4nds4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat-ds/#432589"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/cod4nds1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat-ds/#432588"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/cod4nds2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat-ds/#432587"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/ncod4ds3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/joystiq-hands-on-call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (DS)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/joystiq-hands-on-call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-ds/">Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (DS)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 12:29:00 EST. In an early stage, a freight ship that you siege pitches and rolls, like a giant movie <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_piece_%28film%29">set-piece</a>. While playing a close-to-shipping version of the title, I felt like the action game used these special-effect focal points to drive its frenzied pace and huge scope.<br /><br />Because of the "modern" setting, I had assumed I'd be plodding slowly with a squad of soldiers, tactically (and tactfully) knocking on doors to root out bad guys. And while there are sometimes AI-teammate elements, I never felt like I had to slow down and proceed with caution. Instead, I often had to speed up and dive for cover; depending on the situation, snipers, RPGs, and essentially armies of enemies are firing at you at the same time.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4976_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348383"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4981_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348382"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4978_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348381"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4988_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4987_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/joystiq-hands-on-call-of-duty-4-single-player-360-pc-ps3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 4 single-player (360, PC, PS3)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/joystiq-hands-on-call-of-duty-4-single-player-360-pc-ps3/">Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 4 single-player (360, PC, PS3)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Oct 2007 12:00:00 EST. In what has become a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/crysis-special-edition-promises-featurette-vignette-and-kitchen/">fairly</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/16/halo-3-legendary-edition-to-command-a-legendary-130-pricetag/">formulaic</a> move for high-profile titles, Activision has <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=17386">announced</a> that <em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em> will deploy on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-deploys-worldwide-nov-5/">November 5th</a> in both standard and suspiciously shiny collector's editions -- at least it will on the Xbox 360 and PC. Curiously, the PlayStation 3 has been snubbed from the proceedings, left in the cold with <em>just</em> one of this year's most anticipated games. Is Activision trying to say Sony's system doesn't have enough... <em>collectors</em>? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd"><br /></a><br />Should you own one of the more fortunate platforms, parting with an extra ten dollars will net you a hardcover art book, which we're told features never-before-seen concept, development and final in-game artwork. In addition, the PC version ($60) will provide access to a digital strategy guide while the Xbox 360 package ($70) will house a bonus DVD filled with interviews and other making-of mutterings. Expect those to mention the word "visceral" a lot.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/">Call of Duty 4: Collector's Edition</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/#396972"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/09/cod4_ce_pc_cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/#396971"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/09/cod4_ce_artbook3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/#396970"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/09/cod4_ce_artbook2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/#396969"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/09/cod4_ce_artbook1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition/#396968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/09/cod4_ce_xbox_cover_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/12/headline-call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition-ps3/">Headline = Call of Duty 4 + Collector's Edition - PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 19:15:00 EST. Move over Major Nelson, thy reign has come to an end. According to Xbox.com, the <a href="http://fourzerotwo.blogspot.com/2007/09/top-gamertag-on-xboxcom.html">most popular gamertag</a> honor has been transferred to <a href="http://fourzerotwo.blogspot.com/2007/09/top-gamertag-on-xboxcom.html">fourzerotwo</a>, a lowly developer working on a little-known-game entitled <em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.</em> <br /><br />How did this underdog best the Voice of Microsoft's console? We expect a full-on popularity assault by The Major (real name Larry Hyrb). This fight isn't over, you can bet your gamerscore on it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/11/cod4-dev-becomes-most-popular-gamertag/">COD4 dev becomes most popular gamertag</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 03:55:00 EST. Moving past <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/rumor-23-000-xbox-live-users-barred-for-using-cod4-exploit/">account shenanigans</a>, developer Infinity Ward today raised the Rank level cap in the <em>Call of Duty 4</em> beta to 16. Additionally, at level 12 the option for clan tags becomes available, so that your comrades know just who you are <em>really</em> fighting for.<br /><br />The e-mail sent out to beta players by Infinity Ward also said that this is the "first of several level increases" in the Rank level. We suspect the next level cap increase will give us the option to wear matching frilly costumes onto the battlefield.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4976_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348383"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4981_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348382"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4978_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348381"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4988_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4987_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/call-of-duty-4-beta-enlists-clan-support/">Call of Duty 4 beta enlists clan support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Sep 2007 11:00:00 EST. Citing an "internal Microsoft source," <a href="http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EElApVupyuSQVbmCxF.php">Xbox-Scene</a> reports that 23,000 eager Xbox Live users have been banned from the service for 24 hours following the use of a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Call%20of%20Duty%204%20beta">Call of Duty 4 beta</a></em> exploit. It seems some of the 100,000 valid participants in the online warfare trial were able to sign in with their accounts on a different system (likely belonging to a friend, colleague or mistress) and download the beta again. The second console would then be able to partake in the beta, even when using an alternate gamertag.<br /><br />The source claims that Microsoft has since resolved the issue and temporarily booted those who answered the <em>Call of Duty</em>, even when it didn't ask for them specifically. Though the goal of a beta is to test networking and gameplay amongst a large number of players, allowing thousands of uninvited guests would likely have a deleterious effect on a controlled environment. The remarkably worthless advice we have to offer those who just can't wait to join the World War<em> Now </em>fray is to, well, <em>wait</em>. But just until <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-deploys-worldwide-nov-5/">November 5th</a>.<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong><a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2007/09/06/xbox-live-bans-and-you.aspx">Major Nelson</a> says Microsoft didn't <em>ban</em> any users, but notes that partaking in beta account shenanigans "could very well" violate Xbox Live's terms of service and result in a ban.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/rumor-23-000-xbox-live-users-barred-for-using-cod4-exploit/">Rumor: Xbox Live users barred for using CoD4 exploit [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 12:57:00 EST. <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/">Next Generation</a> got ahold of Infinity Ward president Grant Collier to talk about their upcoming release, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4/"><em>Call of Duty 4</em></a>. Some topics of discussion include an emphasis on fully fleshing out the multiplayer experience, the change of scenery from WWII to modern times, and the reworking of the flow of the game. But loyal <em>CoD</em> fans need not worry that the changes to the franchise have left the hardcore behind. Collier reassures that "for us it's all about opening doors and we're not taking anything away, we're just adding".<br /><br />However, the Infinity Ward president does admit that opening doors to the Sony's inner workings has been a bit tougher. While Collier can claim a close relationship with the people at Microsoft, he cannot say the same about Sony. "I would really like to have that level of relationship with Sony. We're really pushing for that and it's a personal goal of mine to get there but I think there's very few companies that have that level of relationship with Sony. Upon hearing of its impending arrival on the DS, we were worried that <em>Call of Duty 4 </em>wouldn't provide a fun play on the handheld. The latest screens and video for the game have helped us grab our foot and firmly place it into our mouth, however. Seriously, it looks like one great time.<br /><br />While we'd like to embed the video for you, we can't. So you'll have to <a href="http://www.vooks.net/modules.php?module=article&amp;id=12171">hit up Vooks</a> for the footage.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/cod4-vid-gives-us-high-hopes/">CoD4 vid gives us high hopes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. It seems that Infinity Ward was promised by the company that maintains their web servers that the site would not crash again as it has so often has during the beta sign up process. Obviously, the repeated crashes deprived many gamers of their chance to get in on the beta, so Infinity Ward is doing something about it.<br /><br />So, here's the upshot of all this: Infinity Ward is doing away with first come, first serve registration. As soon as the beta site goes live again, they will be implementing <em>open registration</em> for 24 hours. The exact method in which this will be done hasn't been specified yet, but fourzerotwo assures us that everyone will have an equal chance to register for the beta when all is said and done. Keep an eye on <a href="http://fourzerotwo.com/">fourzerotwo's blog</a> for updates.<br /><br />[Thanks, Josh]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/cod4-beta-no-more-first-come-first-serve/">COD4 beta: no more first come, first serve</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 16:55:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-deploys-worldwide-nov-5/">Joystiq</a>, Activision has announced a simultaneous worldwide release for <em>Call of Duty 4</em> on all platforms (PS3, 360, PC). The highly anticipated shooter from Infinity Ward will be released into the wild on November 5th, just before the start of the insane holiday release rush.<br /><br />The developers of <em>CoD4 </em>recently confirmed that the PlayStation 3 version runs just as nicely as the other versions, at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/call-of-duty-4-on-the-ps3-run-at-60fps-with-full-aa/">60FPS with full anti-aliasing</a> -- something sure to appease fans who have been burnt by certain <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/analysts-debate-the-effect-of-the-madden-ps3-fps-debacle/">half-assed ports</a>. Unfortunately, we don't get to participate in the multiplayer beta, but at least we know we're getting a solid version of the game. <br /><br />Now if they would just teach EA a thing or two about programming on the PS3 ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-ready-for-action-on-november-5th/">Call of Duty 4 ready for action on November 5th</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 18:45:00 EST. To be specific, the game will be landing on the 5th of November. Forsaking the franchise's World War II past, <em>COD4</em> brings the series into modern times, hence the subtitle, <em>Modern Warfare</em>. If, by chance, you can't stand the thought of waiting until November to get in on the modernized fragfest, you might consider <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/email-your-way-into-the-cod-4-beta/">signing up</a> for the multiplayer beta lottery that's going on right now.<br /><br />In the meantime, um, just be sure that you "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chqi8m4CEEY">remember, remember the 5th of November</a>."<br /><br />(Sorry.)<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-deploys-worldwide-nov-5/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-drops-november-5/">Call of Duty 4 drops November 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 15:00:00 EST. Activision has officially announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4"><em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em></a> will be launching a worldwide attack aimed at wallets and societal productivity on November 5th. Waving goodbye to the digital dregs of World War II, developer Infinity Ward has moved its first-person shooting into more topical climes. Yes, <span style="font-style: italic;">topical</span>. You'll be wanting that guy in the special suit if you fancy <span style="font-style: italic;">tropical</span> environments.<br /><br />No, not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3"><span style="font-style: italic;">that</span> guy</a> in the special suit. The <span style="font-style: italic;">other</span> guy, you know? Actually, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/joystiq-impressions-metroid-prime-3-wii/">that's a woman</a>. The <span style="font-style: italic;">other other</span> guy then. No! There's no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/half-life-2-episode-two-portal-team-fortress-2-shipping-octob/">crowbars</a><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/timeshift-changes-history-oct-30-on-pc-xbox-360/">time traveling</a>. It's not <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/06/21/haze-box-art-steps-out-of-the-haze/">him</a> either! For god's sake, we meant <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Crysis/">Crysis</a></span>! How many first-person shooters featuring characters in cybersuits could there possibly be this holiday?<br /><br />(Note: <span style="font-style: italic;">Call of Duty 4</span> does not feature cybersuits of any kind. Probably.)<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4976_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348383"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4981_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348382"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4978_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348381"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4988_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4987_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/22/call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare-deploys-worldwide-nov-5/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare deploys worldwide Nov. 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 12:49:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty4"><em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em></a> is about to start its public beta test on Xbox Live, an engagement that has Xbox 360 owners volunteering their gamertags and repeatedly running into a hail of online bullets for the sake of research. In a late night <a href="http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=18902&amp;postdays=0&amp;postorder=asc&amp;start=0">forum post</a> by Jason West, Studio Head of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/InfinityWard/">Infinity Ward</a>, it was announced that early sign up for the beta will begin today at 5PM PT. For those of you keeping score, that's about six hours from now. Furthermore, the post announces that those who make it into the early sign up could be playing as early as <em>tonight</em>. You know, tonight, as in <em>this evening</em>. Finally, the post announces that the beta will be rolled out in waves, with more people being added over time. The listing, you see, has the date "8/17" tattooed onto it very clearly. The folks at <a href="http://www.2old2play.com/News/CoD4__Official_Beta_Date___There_Is_None">2old2play</a> caught up with a representative from Activision to get the whole mess cleared up. The rep stated that while there is no official release date at this time, the beta will be happening "soon" and that we should expect "more information shortly."<br /><br />We'd like to point out that the content on the ticker generally seems to correspond with the day it actually hits Marketplace, so we're wondering just how "soon" the beta really is. After all, we know it's being played right now. All we're really waiting for at this point is for Activision and Infinity Ward to start handing out beta codes to participants. For those of you eagerly waiting for more, you'd best keep your browser pointed at <a href="http://www.charlieoscardelta.com">CharlieOscarDelta.com</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.techdiversions.com/">Derrick Schommer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/cod4-beta-listing-clarified-coming-soon/">COD4 beta listing clarified, coming "soon"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 18:00:00 EST. First of all, the beta has been spotted on the official <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xblm/">Xbox Live Maretplace</a> <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/marketplace/ticker.htm">ticker</a>. What's more, the listing declares that the beta is due to come out <em>today</em>. If you prefer a little more proof than an Xbox.com listing (and we wouldn't blame you if you do), Robert Bowling (GT: fourzerotwo), a community manager for Infinity Ward, was playing the beta at the time of this posting. We haven't received any sort of notification from CharlieOscarDelta.com, so we're assuming the beta hasn't started just yet. Still, if Infinity Ward is on Live testing the beta, it can't be too long, can it? Check out a screen cap of Bowling's gamercard after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/xbox-com-lists-cod4-beta-for-today-already-being-played/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Xbox.com lists COD4 beta for today, already being played</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/xbox-com-lists-cod4-beta-for-today-already-being-played/">Xbox.com lists COD4 beta for today, already being played</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 15:00:00 EST. Hate on the PS3 all you want guys, but we've done did it up right for the Sony lovers. Nothing has been 360 footage yet touted as PS3, you crack-heads! I'm not sure whats up with what you guys might have seen at E3, but we do have AA on the PS3."<br /><br />It's awesome to see Infinity Ward pulling out all the stops and not picking the lazy way out like EA did with their sports games. Plus, they mention that the PS3 will be getting some special <em>COD4 </em>flavored love and that we'll hear about it soon. Hopefully it's something more than lame Sixaxis support, but at this point PS3 fans would be happy just to get a freaking demo or something ...<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.n4g.com/News-59289.aspx">N4G</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/call-of-duty-4-on-the-ps3-run-at-60fps-with-full-aa/">Call of Duty 4 on the PS3 runs at 60FPS with full AA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 21:00:00 EST. It seems Activision was a little hasty in proclaiming that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty4"><em>Call of Duty 4 </em></a>multiplayer beta would be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/02/call-of-duty-4-beta-to-be-exclusive-to-the-us/">restricted to the United States</a>. The Infinity Ward community relations manager known as "fourzerotwo" on the <em>COD4</em> forums has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/call-of-duty-4-beta-may-still-extend-beyond-u-s/">revised the statement</a> made by Activision only yesterday. The community relations manager clarified on the <a href="http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=14137&amp;start=0&amp;sid=d8396fcf0fe2f00b2f915ad87537d0fe">forums</a> (registration required) that the beta is only <em>beginning</em> in the United States, and that Infinity Ward is planning to make it international and is "currently sorting out those details." Unfortunately, we don't have any more details as to when such a thing will take place.<br /><br />In other news, "fourzerotwo" also revealed that new details about the beta will be revealed soon. This information should detail some of the weapons and maps that will be available in the beta.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/cod4-beta-may-still-go-worldwide/">COD4 beta may still go worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 15:15:00 EST. Developer Infinity Ward is asking <a href="http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/board/viewforum.php?f=32">community members</a> (registration required) to pick from one of five box arts for the impending <em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em> launch. The artwork is fairly similar for each of the selections, including a curious sticker next to the ESRB tag that says "storage required" under what appears to be an Xbox 360 disk drive and a memory unit.<br /><br />If just a memory unit is required, the financial burden on those without disk drives won't be so hard ... but honestly, is anyone using their Xbox 360 without some storage method? We've contacted publisher Activision (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/watch-activision-alienate-E3-audience-with-jamie-kennedy/">Jamie Kennedy</a>, of course) for more information.<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong>Infinity Ward community relations manager Robert Bowling told <a href="http://news.mygamercard.net/2007/07/23/call-of-duty-4-storage-not-required/">MyGamerCard</a> that the icon should be disregarded. "The game can still be played by users with and without Storage devices (HDD / Memory Card)," he said, adding that you won't be able to save without some storage. We're still awaiting word from Activision.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/">Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348384"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4976_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348383"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4981_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348382"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4978_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348381"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4988_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-4-modern-combat/#348380"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/08/hpim4987_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/21/call-of-duty-4s-box-art-to-be-decided-by-you/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/call-of-duty-4-xbox-360-box-art-features-storage-required-stic/">Call of Duty 4 Xbox 360 box art features 'Storage Required' sticker [Update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 14:30:00 EST. According to French gaming site <a href="http://www.xboxygen.com/index.php?file=News&amp;op=index_comment&amp;news_id=4923">Xboxygen</a> (which doesn't cite a verifiable source), Activision has "announced" release dates for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/CoD4/"><em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em></a>. North America gets its taste on October 30, while Europe has to wait ten more days for November 9. <em>CoD 4</em> ditches the World War II-theme for modern combat (hence the cryptic title). It also drops the familiar campaign system to unfold the gameplay like an "action novel of a television series". Check out our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/joystiq-first-look-call-of-duty-4-modern-warfare/">early look at <em>CoD 4</em></a> from this year's E3 for more in-depth information.<br /><br /><strike>We're still waiting to hear back from Activision.<br /><br /></strike>Activision confirms that no announcements have been made: "The COD4: MF release date is Fall 2007-we haven't given out specific dates at this time."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/21/possible-release-dates-for-call-of-duty-4/">Rumor: Possible release dates for Call of Duty 4 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Jul 2007 14:30:00 EST. <br />Developer Infinity Ward was on hand at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/engadget-and-joystiq-live-from-microsofts-e3-2007-keynote/">Microsoft's E3 2007 keynote</a> to show off their shiny new <em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em> on the Xbox 360. More than just a simple demonstration of the game's graphics, Infinity Ward was present to announce a public multiplayer beta for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty"><em>Call of Duty 4</em></a>, exclusive to the Xbox 360.<br /><br />Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3">some other game we won't mention</a>, the beta will be distributed over Xbox Live. Though no date for the beta was given, the audience was encouraged to check <a href="http://www.charlieoscardelta.com/">CharlieOscarDelta.com</a> for more details (in case you're confused, that'd be 'C' 'O' 'D' in army lingo).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/call-of-duty-4-to-do-the-public-beta-thing-on-xbox-live/">Call of Duty 4 to do the public beta thing on Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 01:37:00 EST. Hot on the heels of rival franchise <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/metareview-brothers-in-arms-ds/"><em>Brothers in Arms</em></a>, Activision's <em>Call of Duty </em>franchise is another FPS making its first debut on Nintendo's handheld. Judging by the screens we've seen, along with who's actually developing it (n-Space), we've got high hopes.<br /><br />IGN has an interview with producer Sam Nouriani, who has confirmed the game has been secretly in development for quite some time now. He also confirms that the storyline of the DS game runs along with that of the console versions, but does not have you playing as the same characters. As for the rest of the interview, Sam confirms some on-rail segments and tells us to expect all of the wonderful things the franchise has brought to consoles to appear on the DS.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/call-of-duty-4-coming-to-the-ds/">Call of Duty 4 coming to the DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 17:20:00 EST. While not as visually or aesthetically appealing as the <span style="font-style: italic;">Children of Men-</span>esque landscape in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty">previous trailer</a>, this footage from <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/callofduty">Call of Duty 4:</a> </span><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ModernWarfare/" style="font-style: italic;">Modern Warfare</a> multiplayer match gives a feeling for how their designing death match, as all we see in thirty seconds is our perspective shooter running in with a rifle, switching to pistol and getting shot. Thrilling.<br /><br />The game is still in pre-alpha but already looking pretty. A <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/callofduty3?q=call%20of%20duty%203">fine game</a>, to be sure, but we couldn't overcome the been-there done-that feeling. Then the announcement and subsequent first peek at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/28/call-of-duty-4-trailer/">Call of Duty 4</a> in action, which did more than generate a frenzy of renewed interest. We had long since grown tired of WWII shooters and now, the leader of WWII shooters was going all modern. We took a peek at the <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/20757.html">latest trailer</a> and literally, were blown away. The lighting on your fellow solders, the smoke entrails from heat-seeking rockets, the spinning and exploding helicopter: jack the sound up as you watch and you may find yourself sharing similar "<a href="http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/5133/omfg7794259yx.jpg">OMFG</a>" sentiments. <em>Call of Duty 4</em> is reported to be on track for an Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release, sometime this fall<em> </em>and it's definitely on our "must buy" list now. Clarifying, Collier said "[it's cool] if you're playing online poker, but who wants to be playing an RTS on a console and have some guy on a PC clicking and dragging all his troops, attacking your base while you're sitting there with your thumb sticks." The keyboard/mouse vs. gamepad argument is a long-standing battle, and clearly Collier feels that they cannot be equals for fast-paced strategy or first-person shooter titles.<br /><br />Live Anywhere is currently in use by <strike><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo2/">Halo 2</a></em></strike> (update: <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3151085">nevermind</a>), <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun/">Shadowrun</a></em> and the action-packed <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Uno/">Uno</a>.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/call-of-duty-dev-rejects-live-anywhere/">Call of Duty dev rejects Live Anywhere</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 18:55:00 EST. Destructible environments. Those are a few of the latest video game buzzwords used to sell ideas, and Grant Collier, studio head of Infinity Ward (<em>Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</em>), is not happy with it.<br /><br />In an interview <a href="http://au.xbox360.ign.com/articles/796/796451p2.html">with IGN</a>, Collier sees a problematic trend with using sandbox gameplay and "total destructibility" without first considering if it will make the game fun. "And total destructibility, you can really ruin the gameplay," he said. <br /><br />Collier cites <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/counterstrike"><em>Counter-Strike's</em></a> &uuml;ber-popular Dust map, where the two choke points serve as the focal point of entertainment, and how that could be compromised with destructible environments. <br /><br />"It's not fun because you can blow up everything," he said, "it's fun because you know where the action's going to be and there's races against time to get to that action." <br /><br />"So I think right now it's a fad, and the fad will pass, we're not going to be bite on in it - we want the game to be fun first, and destructibility comes second," he said. The over-indulgence may be a fad, but the interaction that destructible environments and sandbox gameplay adds is something that isn't (and shouldn't) go away, and we think Collier would agree that said features, if properly implemented, can potentially augment gameplay.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/call-of-duty-dev-down-on-destructible-environments-sandbox-game/">Call of Duty dev down on destructible environments, sandbox gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 15:55:00 EST.
