Well, look no further than Circuit City and the Sunday newspaper ads. This week, Circuit City is slashing $20 off select games including titles like TMNT ($29.99), GRAW 2 ($39.99), Spider-Man 3 ($39.99) and Call of Duty 3 ($39.99). Also, since both the Red and Black Edition Player Packs will be free downloads, why not pick up Rainbow Six Vegas for the low, low price of $39.99 too? You can't pass that up. Maybe new releases are more up your alley, then we advise picking up a free $10 gift card with a Transformers: The Game purchase. And if you're in the market for Shadowrun, purchase it for $37.99 on Windows Vista and Circuit City will throw in a wireless receiver for free!

All deals are available online or in-store, so save a few bucks and pick up some new games to add to your video game library this week.
$20 discounts on R6 Vegas, GRAW 2 and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 01 Jul 2007 10:00:00 EST. Specifically, the Bravo Map Pack can now be downloaded for 800 points. The pack contains 5 maps, including 2 maps from the original Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive. The old maps, for old-school COD fans that are dying to know, are Gare Centrale and Marseilles. Gare Centrale features a train depot, which seems like the hot thing in multiplayer maps these days, while Marseilles utilizes open space and lots of vehicles.

Anyone plan on grabbing the new maps, or are you comfortable waiting for Call of Duty 4?

[Via Joystiq]
New COD3 maps storm Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 13:00:00 EST. Call of Duty is saying a fond farewell to WWII (or "double-dub dos" as they say on the streets) with the new "Bravo" map pack. Well, semi-new is probably more accurate. The 800 point ($10) download includes three new maps for Call of Duty 3 plus two old ones culled from the PC's Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive. They include "Gare Centrale" and "Marseilles," which probably excites/upsets longtime fans who think those two are perfect/completely wrong to bring to CoD 3.

The two other things we know are that it's hefty (950 MB) and not available in Japan. If this is your sort of thing (and you're probably already off downloading if so) you may want to act fast, before CoD gets all uppity and modern.
Call of Duty 3 Bravo map pack hits Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 09:30:00 EST. This week at Circuit City you can get the newer 360 version of Call of Duty 3 Gold Edition for only $39.99. Though, it looks like it is sold out online, so you may have to stop by your local store to get this deal. The difference between the original COD 3 and the gold edition is that the gold edition comes with a bonus disc of additional content and a key code to download the Valor Map Pack off of the XBLM for free. That's a $10 savings my friends. See, reading the newspaper can be fun, that is when you find good deals on video games.
Call of Duty 3 GE gets the discount fever originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 11:00:00 EST. Last week, Crackdown came on strong with bronze position on the Live top ten. Now it's swapped spots with Rainbow Six: Vegas as Call of Duty 3 continues to be just shy of the podium. GRAW 2's mulitplayer demo makes a return to take the Crackdown demo's position, which moved to 7th. Madden refuses to budge at sixth while Lost Planet and Oblivion get nudged to eighth and ninth, respectively. GRAW rounds out the bottom of the list while last, and obviously not least, Gears of War retains its top spot over all of Xbox Live-dom. Do you feel slightly confused? If so, our simple, yet eloquent list awaits your review after the break, complete with last weeks standings in parentheses.
Continue reading Live top ten: Sin City descends

Live top ten: Sin City descends originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 19:15:00 EST. The problems people were having have now been fixed and some bugs regarding Ranked Lobbies and Ranked Matches have been addressed as well in an Auto-Update. It's good to see developers taking actions and keeping the community well informed on issues like this, and we here at Fanboy Towers have been there every step of the way. While it's not much of a consolation to Xbox Livers who've already dropped $10 on the map pack, a new patch will also be released, alongside the fixed content. The patch will address two reoccurring issues:

Being booted to the menu screen when the lobby countdown reaches zero (in ranked matches)

Falling through the map when a ranked match begins

Following the discovery of this error, the developers promised that a fix was coming. One of the games developers, known on the Xbox.com forums as AxisOf3vil, has announced that a fix will be available in the "very near future." Accompanying the re-release of the Valor Map pack will be an update to Call of Duty 3 that should fix two of its major problems. The update should keep players from being booted out of a ranked match lobby when the countdown hits zero, and it should fix an issue that causes players to fall out of the map at the beginning of ranked matches.

The maps and the update are undergoing final testing and should be released soon.

[Via Xboxic]
Fixed map pack and update soon for COD3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 15:30:00 EST. Naturally, most of the frustration stems from the fact that players paid 800 MS points ($10) for the Valor Map Pack, only to have it run and hide somewhere on the console's hard drive.

Major Nelson assures us that Microsoft and the developer are actively working on the problem, pointing toward this thread on the official Xbox forum as a source of progress updates (none at time of writing). Best hold off on reeling in the COD maps (OOF!) until the rather blatant issue has been resolved. Did the certification department not realize that discretion is the worst part of the Valor Map Pack? We have numerous readers reporting that once the maps are downloaded, they are not recognized on the 360 or within Call of Duty 3. It's reported that MS Points are debited when this happens, so prospective buyers may want to wait until Microsoft and Treyarch come up with a fix. Major Nelson advises that you keep an eye on this Xbox.com forum post for updates. Karsten of Shizzle Games told us of a post on Major Nelson detailing the new content. Those of you with an RSS reader may have seen it pop up, too. The post is gone now, but a quick search shows the same post, only it's dated for January 11, tomorrow. Major Nelson's clock must be running fast, because Ms. Pac-Man showed up on his site yesterday, even though it wasn't released until this morning. But there you have it, expect a free new map for Call of Duty 3 tomorrow. This could also mean that we'll see the Valor Map pack -- containing 5 maps for 800 points -- release tomorrow as well.
COD3 map hits Marketplace tomorrow? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 15:30:00 EST. The patch will be applied the next time COD3 players load the game on their 360. This patch should address several issues in the game, but most importantly, it makes ranked matches (both Custom and Quick Match) join lobbies much faster. There are also some minor HUD improvements, and the option to punish team killing medics. Find full details of the patch on Xbox.com. The fix-up seems in part to be preparation for a map pack release expected after the holidays. With its multiplayer better intact, Activision hopes to build on the small fortune its amassed selling COD-related premium content to Xbox Live users.

Valor Map Pack (800 points) will include five multiplayer maps; Activision will also offer an additional map, "Champs," for free. Set in Port Royal de Champs, France, the bonus map is ideal for small- to mid-sized matches. No announcement has been made about offering the Valor maps or alternative content to PlayStation 3 COD3 players.
Call of Duty 3 patched, new maps inbound originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 19:25:00 EST. There will be two pieces of content available: a free "Bonus Map" and a premium "Valor Map Pack" for 800 points. The bonus map is called "Champs" and sees players facing off in Port Royal de Champs, France. The map should fare well for smaller and mid-sized games. The "Valor Map Pack" will include 5 new maps, all set in France, and promises plenty of close quarters combat. For the moment, the content has no official release date, but we'd say it's a safe bet that it won't arrive before the New Year.
COD3 content called to Marketplace soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Dec 2006 13:45:00 EST. If you've been paying attention to Resistance, you'll know that it can be great. However, Call of Duty 3 paints a different picture. Gamespot's review of COD3 for the PS3 cites a couple of noticeable differences between the PS3 version and its 360 cousin. The first difference: the PS3 has a choppy frame rate that makes the game a chore occasionally. We'll chalk that up to Treyarch being unfamiliar with the PS3. The differences in online play, on the other hand, are more fundamental. The PS3 version offers 24 players online, just like the 360 version. Unfortunately, only one person per PS3 can go online versus the 360 version's four. Also, there is no ranked play available, a feature that is standard on 360 thanks to TrueSkill.

If Sony continues to put the onus on developers to create online features, we can only assume that online options will always be superior on the 360, at least when it comes to cross-platform titles. What do you think? Does the fact that Sony's service is free outweigh the depth of features available through Xbox Live?
COD3 is best on 360, in more ways than one originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 13:30:00 EST. What is more, the source claims that Call of Duty 4 will forgo the World War II setting in favor of more modern warfare. Many are speculating that Call of Duty will shift its focus to the Middle East, as EA did with its Battlefield series. This would seem to confirm a similar rumor reported by Joystiq way back in March.

Development of the 4th installment of Call of Duty will be handed back to its original developer, Infinity Ward. Call of Duty 4 will also mark the series' return to the PC. According to the source, a deal has been made with Activision regarding future titles. Supposedly, Infinity Ward will now handle the development of all even numbered COD games, and Treyarch will develop all odd numbered COD titles. If true, this maneuver was probably executed to decrease the gap between sequels, though it will be interesting to note the future differences between Infinity Ward's and Treyarch's entries. Also worth noting, Call of Duty 4 is reported to have many technical improvements, including 16 critical points mapped to the head of each character. This allows for very detailed hit detection -- for example, shooting at the side of the head will tear off an ear or make a soldier's helmet spin. Finally, multiplayer is rumored to support 54 players.

[Via Joystiq]
Call of Duty 4 to ditch World War II? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 16:00:00 EST. Games-Aktuell, a German gaming outlet, has discovered that Call of Duty 3 and Tony Hawk's Project 8 are not running at a 720p high-def resolution.

When the tests were run, CoD3 was shown to be running at 1040x620 pixels and THP8 at 1040x584 pixels. The pixel drop reflects a resolution drop of 30% and 34%, respectively. The resolution drop could be assumed to help keep framerates up, but THP8 reportedly has framerate problems. So what's up?

Activision Germany told Cynamite.de that they weren't aware of the problem and are looking into it. Lower resolution is not something that normally just happens by accident, but given the recent quality assurance problems with CoD3, these resolution problems may just be another woeful mistake. If intentional, why the resolution drop in THP8 when the 360 is clearly powerful enough to handle something like Gears of War just fine?

Or does it dare to venture beyond their scope? Call of Duty 3 follows the former path, with few surprises, still no co-op, and an apparently wonky multiplayer experience. But no series does WWII better -- and that counts for something.

Peep the word:

Game Chronicles (98/100) - "The action is unbelievably intense and the historical material is researched and presented in a way that borders on being educational ... Signing up and going off to war might not be for everybody, but playing this game will certainly make you respect those who did and those who still do."

Game Informer (85/100) - "There's little to complain about outside of the lack of innovation. However, it pains me deeply to see this franchise, which has done so much to push the first-person shooter genre forward, moving down the dark path of mediocrity that Medal of Honor has been walking for the last several years."

1UP (65/100) - "Strengthened with vehicles and support for up to 24 players, the online multiplayer comes in strong enough to save face for the series, but that pales as compensation for the disappointing single-player game ... Even for those who wind up enjoying the online component, Call of Duty 3 will long since have been forgotten a year from now."

Back when Call of Duty 2 released for the Xbox 360, the game had serious multiplayer problems; problems that took four months to fix. To the dismay of gamers, Call of Duty 3 has its own set of online problems, despite being made by a different developer than CoD2.

Buzz on the official Xbox.com message boards says that CoD3 players are unable to enter into ranked matches or (in some cases) any at all. Some players are unable to find any games, regardless of what skill level is entered into the system. Others join games and find themselves sitting in lobbies indefinitely. A different group find the multiplayer menu locking up on them. One theory suggests that anyone trying to join a ranked game ends up making a new lobby, which would result in thousands of one player online matches.

Console games are supposed to be simple plug and play affairs. We might expect these Call of Duty 3 multiplayer issues in a PC version, not a 360 version. Because of unified hardware and online components, console games should always ship (mostly) bug-free. We hope Call of Duty 3 is an isolated affair, but after issues with Dead Rising and Saint's Row, are we beginning to see an ugly trend in console games? The release now, patch later method is unacceptable on the PC, even more so on a game console.

The region free Asian version of the game can be had for a mere $48 if you utilize the cheapest shipping option. This is a concept we've perhaps covered to death, but let's go over it again: many games are released in Asia with absolutely no localization at all. That means that oftentimes Asia gets the exact same English game that the US and UK get (usually, even the manual is still English). Asian versions are often region free, so they can be played on any 360 on the planet. To top it all off, they are often heavily discounted. So there you go, a perfectly good copy of COD3 for $12 less. While you're at it, why not pick up F.E.A.R. too (once it's restocked)? CVG lists the 360 version for November 10th, well before any other version (the PS3 version is set for March 07). Curiously absent from Activision's announcement is the date for the Xbox version. CVG speculates that this could mean the Xbox version has been canceled. It seems doubtful, but COD2 is the 360's first million seller. Maybe Activision and Mircrosoft are hoping COD3 will drive sales of the 360. Regardless, 360 owners will be the first to play.

We can't help but note that it's going to be impossible to sample all the 360 goodness this holiday. Gears of War, Phantasy Star, Splinter Cell, Viva Piñata, R6 Vegas, the list just keeps going. Didn't get enough of that insane FPS action in the last Call of Duty or Medal of Honor title? Even so... is the thrill of playing through, arguably, the same battles in a different lens not enough? How about some massive online multiplayer mayhem? Call of Duty 3 has been confirmed to give you just that upon the PS3's launch. Currently, the 24-player matches are running at an estimated 30 frames per second on the PS3, but that's not only 1) a rough estimate by simply seeing the game but also 2) not a finalized system. Still, 30 shouldn't be too bad, should it? Whatever. Commence the useless FPS/FPS flame war.
Call of Duty 3 to have Online Multiplayer, fo' sho' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 18:30:00 EST. We waged a vicious and hard-fought campaign against the ruthless receptionist who finally let us into the trenches to get some game on.

Controversy strikes! Yes, the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii versions of the game are graphically different. Looking across the field of battle through the field glasses on the 360 looked crisp and sharp. Running through a forest full of hidden Germans looked photorealistic, even with falling leaves that you could zoom in on and see every close-up detail. Running through burned out buildings on the Wii looked ... GameCubish. We pressed the Treyarch to tell us which version they favored, but they resisted our interrogation. Something was amiss, and headquarters didn't want us to know about it. Loose lips sink ships and all that.
Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 3

Joystiq hands-on: Call of Duty 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Oct 2006 15:28:00 EST. Now, before you wet yourself with excitement -- it's okay, it happens to the best of us -- realize that this video is tiny. That, and you will likely have to sit through an advertisement in order to watch it. Still, there are some nice things going on for those who care to look. The depth of field effect when zooming in is very nice. Also noticeable is seeing the muzzle flash from your gun reflect on the gun itself. I've always found war games to be sort of "samey," but COD3 has definitely got the look. No Coke ads in there, though.

[Via Evil Avatar]
See Call of Duty 3 in motion originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Aug 2006 23:00:00 EST. That's right, Dan the Automator is producing the soundtrack for NBA 2K7. Appropriately titled, Dan the Automator presents: 2K7, you can be sure the soundtrack will be very nice. Most people would recognize Dan's work from the first Gorillaz album. And just in case super slick producers don't tickle your fancy like they do ours, the podcast contains some nice tidbits about both Call of Duty 3 and NBA 2K7. Claiming to work for an independent video game site on a distant continent, our latest informant (we'll call him <strike>Mr. Informant</strike> Fronzel Neekburm) lends even more weight to the ongoing theory that the Nintendo Wii launches in October. At this point, said theory could probably kill a passerby if dropped from a balcony.

Fronzel explains that his outlet received a detailed release schedule from Activision, one that listed Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam with an October release, followed by Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Call of Duty 3 in November. Shortly afterwards, a hasty re-issue dropped in his inbox, with the only alteration being to the Wii release dates -- they'd been replaced with a more vague "Upon Wii launch." Had Mr. Neekburm just witnessed Activision in a drunken stumble, grabbing and pulling back a velvet curtain in an attempt to avoid an unpleasant impact with the floor?

Both documents were forwarded to us and we were able to ascertain that the last person to modify the second document is part of Activision's international media relations team. The presence of LucasArts titles on the list had us puzzled for a bit, but it turns out that Activision publishes George's games in certain territories. The last question in need of an answer, of course, is "would Activision already know the launch date?" Considering that they're working on a highly publicized launch title, we're going to go with "yes."

Admittedly, that part is pure speculation. Activision may have just been eradicating a date they pulled from the ether, for fear of people getting the wrong idea and writing deeply entertaining, mercilessly captivating blog posts about it. We'll let you know if we hear anything else.

Note: In the picture above, we edited the spreadsheet a bit in order to highlight the relevant information.

[Thanks, uh, Fronzel!]
Activision slip-up points to October Wii release originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Jul 2006 20:35:00 EST. A full five of the top spots are occupied by 360 exclusives (six if you count the 360 version of BFMEII). Xboxic has gone to the trouble of making a numbered list, which I will politely <strike>steal</strike> utilize:

Chromehounds (360 exclusive)

Prey (360/PC)

Over G Fighters (360 exclusive)

LotR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 (360 version)

Dead Rising (360 exclusive)

NCAA Football 2007 (multi)

Hitman: Blood Money (multi)

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja (PS2)

Gears of War (360 exclusive)

Call of Duty 3 (PC/next-gen)

Look at that list for a second. Notice anything? That's right, four 360 exclusives that haven't even been released -- Chromehounds, Prey, Dead Rising, and Gears of War -- are in the top 10. That means these games are more requested than games people could actually be playing right now. Crazy, no?
360 games top the rental charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Jul 2006 10:00:00 EST.
