The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/insanely-twisted-shadow-planet"><em>Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet</em></a> DLC "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/06/insanely-twisted-shadow-planet-dlc-scheduled-for-sept-13/">Shadow Hunters</a>" was originally set to be released in September, but that didn't happen. It's just shown up on Major Nelson's latest "coming soon" list of XBLA content, scheduled for release on October 12.<br />
<br />
The schedule also includes some nice sales both this week and next. From today through October 10, you can get <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/catan">Catan</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/duels-of-the-planeswalkers-2012">Magic the Gathering 2012</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/yugioh-5ds-decade-duels">Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's</a></em>, and <em>Battleship</em> for 50% off in the "Never Be Board Again" sale. Also half off is Bethesda "Games, Add-ons, and Avatars."<br />
<br />
Next week, the "Saints and Shadows" sale will knock 600 points off the price of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shadow-complex"><em>Shadow Complex</em></a>, with <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/perfect-dark">Perfect Dark</a> </em>available for half-off as well. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/saints-row-2"><em>Saints Row 2</em></a> will be 25% off, with its DLC available at half price. Combined with that <em>ITSP</em> content, that's rather a lot of shadow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/itsp-dlc-sneaks-onto-xbla-next-week-shadow-complex-also-on-sale/">ITSP DLC sneaks onto XBLA next week, Shadow Complex also on sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 03:00:00 EST. Your choices for downloadable games in <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/05/12/heads-up-playstation-store-update-12th-may-2010/">this week's European PSN update</a> are fairly limited -- however, the two choices you've got are <em>rather</em> appealing. If you're looking for a hex-based diplomacy simulator, <em>Catan</em> is now available for the PS3. If you want some jetpack-infused action, <em>Rocket Knight</em> is probably a safer choice. Or, if you want to pimp out your copy of <em>Skate 3</em>, <em>DJ Hero</em>, <em>Nier</em> or <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> with new DLC, there are a few avenues for you to explore as well. Everyone's a winner!<br />

When 38 Studios isn't busy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/former-nintendo-vp-denise-kaigler-joins-38-studios/">hiring former Nintendo execs</a>, Curt Schilling's Massachusetts-based MMO developer is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/curt-schillings-38-studios-acquires-thqs-big-huge-games/">buying up close-to-death development studios</a> -- take, for instance, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/big-huge-games">Big Huge Games</a>. Tim Train, the studio's president, illuminated the near-death experience that Big Huge had in a talk at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax-east">PAX East</a> earlier this year (slides from said speech can be found below). <br />
<br />
He explained how, with just a handful of days left and termination letters ready to send out, 38 Studios swept in and saved Big Huge and the vast majority of its staff. We found his story so interesting, we thought we'd follow up with Train and have him explain it once more, as well as speak about other topics. Will Big Huge ever produce another digital board game? Unfortunately, it looks like you could be waiting on that for quite some time. Hit the break for the whole thing.<br />

A PS3 adaptation of "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Settlers_of_Catan">The Settlers of Catan</a>" board game may be coming to America. The <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28458">ESRB</a> has added a brand new listing for the game, donning the title an E rating. Most likely, this version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/catan"><em>Catan</em></a> is the one released in Japan <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/catan-coming-to-ps3-courtesy-of-game-republic/">in 2008</a>, developed by longtime Sony partner Game Republic.<br />
<br />
No other details can be garnered from the brief ratings listing. The original Japanese version released exclusively on PlayStation Network for 1200 yen (about $13). It seems safe to assume the US release will be similar.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/15/settlers-of-catan-ps3/">Catan PS3 headed to US, says ESRB</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jan 2010 15:15:00 EST. The official <em>Settlers of Catan</em> <a href="http://catan.com/gamenews.html">website</a> announced that a version of the game is currently building a road to iPhone. The new version will be developed by Exozet, which previously made <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/settlers-of-catan-expanding-empire-coming-to-ds/">Catan: The First Island</a></em>. This will <em>not</em> be a port of XBLA's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/catan">Catan</a></em> by Big Huge Games.<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/iPhone/">iPhone</a> version currently has a release date of "summer" and is being created in collaboration with designer Klaus Teuber. Hopefully Exozet will take its time and update the graphics instead of doing a straight port of the mobile version it previously released.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2009/07/23/official-settlers-of-catan-game-coming-to-iphone/">What They Play</a>]<br />

THQ-owned Big Huge Games has reportedly laid off a "huge number" of employees, an unnamed source told <a href="http://www.developmag.com/news/31625/Big-losses-at-Big-Huge">Develop</a> this morning. Reports less than two weeks ago had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/report-thq-selling-rise-of-nations-dev-big-huge-games/">THQ selling Big Huge Games</a> unless it found a buyer quickly. According to THQ spokesperson Julie MacMedan, THQ was looking for a buyer (at the time) to pick up Big Huge in the "near future." Considering the predicted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/analyst-thq-has-50-chance-of-bankruptcy/">50 percent chance of survival of THQ</a>, selling the <em>Catan</em> and <em>Rise of Nations</em> developer may be a last ditch endurance effort on the part of THQ that hasn't gone through, thus resulting in the job cuts.<br /><br />We asked THQ for a statement regarding the alleged layoffs and Ms. MacMedan responded this evening, saying, "We continue to pursue a sale of Big Huge Games. Yesterday, some of the staff were notified that they were not going to be part of the future direction of the studio. We are not providing exact headcounts at this time." The classic board game, <em>Catan</em>, is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network soon. This will be an original version of the game (not a port of the XBLA title), and is helmed by Game Republic, developers of <em>Genji</em> and <em>Folklore</em>. The download is scheduled to hit Japan on December 18th for 1200 yen. The game will expand to other territories, although a release date has not been set.<br /><br />Although only one player will be supported offline, the online multiplayer mode will allow for four players to go against each other. Surprisingly, the board game will feature both 1080p graphics and 5.1 surround sound.<br /><br />[Thanks, Geb B.!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/catan-coming-to-ps3-courtesy-of-game-republic/">Catan coming to PS3, courtesy of Game Republic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:15:00 EST. The game will be a port of the upcoming mobile title <em>Catan: The First Island</em> (with appropriately upgraded graphics and audio, we hope), a trailer for which we've embedded after the break. No details have yet to surface about the title's release date, though we imagine adapting a thirteen-year-old board game for a handheld doesn't take a remarkable amount of time<em>.</em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/settlers-of-catan-expanding-empire-coming-to-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Settlers of Catan expanding empire, coming to DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/settlers-of-catan-expanding-empire-coming-to-ds/">Settlers of Catan expanding empire, coming to DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Oct 2008 18:30:00 EST. Listen, we're appreciative of all versions of <em>Settlers of Catan</em> (except the <a href="http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/278">card game</a>, mostly), but this is the version we've been waiting for: the DS-bound <em>Catan: The First Island</em>. Really, it could have been called <em>Catan: A Crappy Version</em> and we'd still be chest-bumping and high-fiving; on this one, we're easy to please. Got numbers? Resources? We can make jokes about sheep? Done.<br /><br />There are no details available right now beyond the fact that there will be a DS version of the mobile <em>Catan: The First Island</em> released sometime, and it'll be similar to the game in the video above, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/18/it-just-makes-sense-settlers-of-catan-lands-on-the-ds-at-last/">It just makes sense: Settlers of Catan lands on the DS at last</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Oct 2008 13:43:00 EST. Certain Affinity is close to finishing <em>Plunder</em>, a downloadable real-time strategy, multiplayer pirate game. The Capcom-published title will be released in late Spring or early Summer for XBLA, PSN, and PCs. Pricing has yet to be announced.<br />
<br />
With inspiration from <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/catan">Settlers of Catan</a>, Certain Affinity decided to create a hex-based game but with a real-time twist. Each player -- up to four on one system and eight online -- uses a pointer to guide their own ship. Teams win by capturing a certain number of towns or holding the majority when time runs out.<br />
<br />
I played a few test games on an Xbox setup, tapping the A button to issue movement orders. Much of the rest of the game is automated, with ships attacking towns and enemy pirates when within range. Neutral and enemy towns pelted my boat with canon balls until I pummeled them into submission. If I held the defeated town for a moment, I'd claim it, causing it to attack only opposing boats.<br />

Those gamers who have just created a Gamertag can register <a href="http://email.xbox.com/a/hBHxaszAlyGDmB0CHdcAxiQuUU1/xbox5">via a .NET site</a> to receive a download code for the XBLA version of the classic tabletop game Settlers of Catan. In other words, he thought it was a <em>pretty good idea</em>, as did Big Huge Games COO, Tim Train. "It's rare to find a publisher who understands games on the level and depth that [THQ] do, and they share our position for quality in a great environment," said Train.<br /><br />The quality expected to escape from said great environment includes a mysterious new IP from Big Huge Games (it's what "sealed the deal," said Sorenson) and the previously announced, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/thq-and-big-huge-games-announce-a-new-rpg-led-by-ken-rolston/">Ken Rolston-led RPG</a> slated for release in 2009.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/thq-to-acquire-rise-of-nations-developer-big-huge-games/">THQ acquires Rise of Nations developer Big Huge Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 10:15:00 EST. <strong><em>Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword</em></strong> (PC)<br />
<br />
Please, make the addiction stop! <em>Civilization IV: Warlords</em>, the first expansion for <span style="font-style: italic;">Civ IV,</span> made my "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/01/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks/">Best of the Rest</a>" last year and <em>Beyond the Sword</em> tops this year's list. The funny thing is I'm not a <span style="font-style: italic;">Civ</span> fanboy, nor am I even that great of a player (<span style="font-style: italic;">Full Disclosure</span>: I still play on Noble level), but <span style="font-style: italic;">Civ IV</span> is a game I can come back to over and over again. <span style="font-style: italic;">Beyond the Sword</span> added much-needed mechanics for culture-prone and passive-aggressive players, with enhancements in espionage and other concepts "beyond the sword." Oh, and just to keep last year's tradition going: Firaxis (2K, Take-Two), <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/firaxis-wouldnt-be-against-alpha-centauri-ii/">please get the rights to <em>Alpha Centauri</em></a> back from EA and give us a sequel!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks-of-2007/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Alexander's Picks of 2007</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/best-of-the-rest-alexanders-picks-of-2007/">Best of the Rest: Alexander's Picks of 2007</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jan 2008 22:30:00 EST. <strong style="font-style: italic;">Odin Sphere</strong> (PS2)<br />
<br />
Vanillaware's side-scrolling action RPG caught me completely off guard when it came out, but I fell instantly in love with the game's style. Practically everything about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/odinsphere"><em>Odin Sphere</em></a> is unique: the circular levels; the gigantic, beautifully-drawn sprites; the bizarre food-crafting mechanics. Toss in a healthy amount of Norse mythology, and you've got one damn fine, under-appreciated game. Here's hoping Vanillaware's <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/09/05/vanillaware-brings-its-2d-talents-to-the-wii/">upcoming Wii title</a> is up to snuff.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/best-of-the-rest-scotts-picks-of-2007/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Scott's Picks of 2007</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/01/best-of-the-rest-scotts-picks-of-2007/">Best of the Rest: Scott's Picks of 2007</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Jan 2008 15:30:00 EST. <font color="#808080"><span style="font-style: italic;">Every other week Scott Jon Siegel contributes </span><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/offthegrid/">Off the Grid</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, a column about card games, board games, and everything else non-digital.</span></font><br /><br />"<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/12/digital-killed-the-analog-star/">Non-digital games are awesome</a>" is the line I usually insist upon in this column. But even awesome analog games have their faults: namely, if you don't have anyone to play with, you can't really play.<br /><br />So, as an end-of-year treat, let's look back at the last year+ of games reviewed, and find some ways to play those suckers against some internet folk:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/off-the-grid-interviews-brian-reynolds-of-big-huge-games/"><em><strong>Settlers of Catan</strong></em></a><br />I still haven't gotten around to reviewing <em>Settlers</em>, but I did chat with Brian Reynolds about the <a href="http://www.catanlive.com/">Xbox Live Arcade version of the game</a>, which is probably the best bet for consistent, high-volume net play.<br /><br />For those who don't have an Xbox 360 (like, well, <em>me</em>), Aso Brain Games hosts an <a href="http://games.asobrain.com/">unofficial, Java-based version of the game</a> called <em>Xplorers</em>. After a free registration, the site allows users to player ranked and un-ranked versions against other users and bots, and features a number of expansion and additions to the base rules, which can be toggled on or off. Don't let the low-fi look of the site dissuade you; <em>Xplorers</em> is a well-put-together <em>Settlers</em> clone, with a solid interface and a consistent number of users online at any time.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/off-the-grid-long-distance-gaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Off the Grid: Long-distance gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/off-the-grid-long-distance-gaming/">Off the Grid: Long-distance gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 08:00:00 EST. While we certainly aren't against playing board games on a console, Wii Ware seems like the logical choice for release, not regular retail titles (though we're in favor of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/new-details-on-wii-chess-remind-us-that-the-game-exists/">budget price</a>) ... you know, sort of in the spirit of <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/category/xbox-live-arcade/">XBLA releases</a>. Then again, we've seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/wii-fanboy-review-geometry-wars-galaxies/">full-fledged retail versions of XBLA titles</a> before, and they worked just fine, so we can only assume that current-gen board games can fly as well. Our question today is: what would you actually like to see in a retail board game (as opposed to a downloadable title)? Which games with what features? Perhaps a version of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settlers_of_catan#Settlers_expansions_and_editions">Settlers of Catan</a> with options for all the expansions, or games we've enjoyed on consoles before, like Risk, that are nice in electronic form because you don't have to bother with all the pieces. But will any board game really be enough to take us away from all the other Wii games that are already so much fun to play in live groups?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/wii-warm-up-board-games/">Wii Warm Up: Board games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Dec 2007 09:00:00 EST. It's not particularly exciting though, as it won't significantly alter your game at all. First, there is a picture pack available that will set you back 100 MS Points. Somewhat more interesting, you can download the Mayfair skin, which will give your gameboard the appearance of the original Mayfair Games version. Are you filling your non-handheld time with the Wii, or even -- gasp -- another system? That's where this blogger tends to fall of late; between the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/tag/h3beta07"><em>Halo 3</em></a> Beta and the recent release of <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/tag/catan"><em>Catan</em></a> on the Xbox Live Marketplace (we <strong><em>love</em></strong> the boardgame), there's a little variety in the gaming schedule of late. After all, for those of us who aren't <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/pokemon">Pok&eacute;-fiends</a>, the last few weeks have been a little more on the mediocre side of things ... which, considering our continuing obsession with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/01/puzzle-quests-ai-doesnt-cheat-but-you-can/"><em>Puzzle Quest</em></a>, is probably a good thing for the ol' wallet.<br /><br />But we do wonder what other games take your fancy. Perhaps <em>World of Warcraft</em> or another MMO? Are you one of the seven people who've bought a PS3? Next week, we figure <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/nms-multiplayer-mayhem-with-mario-party-8/"><em>Mario Party 8</em></a> will suck up tons of free time, so we're getting that non-Nintendo gaming in now. How about you? Are you sticking with your beloved DS, or do you sometimes branch out a little?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/27/ds-daily-variety-is-it-really-the-spice-of-life/">DS Daily: Variety - is it really the spice of life?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. The game, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/carcassonne-making-roads-into-xbox-live-arcade-on-june-7th/">premieres</a> in June, had some more details released onto the villagers before the big unveil.<br /><br />IGN <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/789/789023p1.html">reports</a> that the visual style is very similar to <em>Catan</em>, however players will not by able to rotate the playing field, only zoom in and out and pan. Games are under 20 minutes in two-player and under 10 for five-player and includes Vision camera support. The XBLA version of <em>Carcassonne</em> also includes the "River I &amp; II" expansion packs that were apparently released later for the board game. Players lay the river to begin the match in this version instead of starting with the basic castle/road starter tile of the original game. Sierra says other add-ons to the board game like I<em>nns &amp; Cathedral</em> and <em>The Tower</em> will be released through Xbox Live. We hope the transaction ends up being truly micro. <em>Carcassonne</em> is expected to cost 800 MS points ($10 USD). We can only hope the <em>Carcassonne</em> gamers are as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/is-catan-changing-xbox-live/">civilized</a> as the <em>Catan</em> crew.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/carcassonne-finishes-building-before-june-release/">Carcassonne finishes building before June release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 May 2007 17:57:00 EST. Hey, it's time for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Podcast%20Rodeo">Podcast Rodeo</a> once more. You can also throw in the screeching voices of the prepubescent and those who think their personal soundtrack should also be heard through everyone else's headset. And of course, there are even a few wretched souls who insist on <em>singing</em>.<br /><br />But not in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Catan/">Catan</a></em> apparently. Joystiq's Alexander Sliwinski <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/is-catan-changing-xbox-live/">reports</a> that <em>Catan</em> is a veritable bastion of civility and grace in the sophomoric minefield of Xbox Live. It seems he has been able to play game after game <em>without one player-related issue</em>. Not one. He even played a round with our own David Dreger (who must have held himself in check). As Sliwinski notes, <em>Catan</em> presents a different kind of experience on Xbox Live and it presumably attracts a different kind of player. If this is the kind of precedent set by board games on XBLA, Microsoft may just be in for an unexpected jump in sales.<br /><br />800 points for some peaceful, enjoyable gaming doesn't sound bad at all, now does it?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/catan-makes-for-civility-on-xbox-live/">Catan makes for civility on Xbox Live?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2007 17:45:00 EST. Everyone we've met who makes it through a full game gets a good approval rating and nobody (and we actually mean nobody) has deserved a complaint or negative review. No pre-pubescent screams, no racist/sexist/homophobic statements ... sure, there's expletive dropping -- but it's all in proper context. Is civility actually possible on Xbox Live?<br /><br />People will instantly argue that <em>Catan</em> brings a different crowd to Xbox Live and given our experience that is absolutely true. And we love it! <em>Catan,</em> combined with <em>Uno </em>(although there are caveats with <em>Uno</em>), shows that there is a different demographic out there in Xbox Live land. Now does this stop the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/23/protecting-adults-from-children-online/">calls for an adults only section</a> for Xbox Live? Not a chance. It would still be nice to play <em>Halo</em> without the ... let's just call it "noise." All we know is if this <em>Catan</em> community is the same that'll be into <em>Carcassonne</em>, then that's money well spent for a nice couple hours of gaming.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/is-catan-changing-xbox-live/">Is Catan changing Xbox Live?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2007 13:00:00 EST. Obviously, that's slightly <em>out of character</em>, although it is <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/podcasts/The%20Broodax%20Imperiate.mp3">revealed</a> in the accompanying podcast that Mike actually <em>has played</em> the real life counterpart, and much to everyone's surprise, hated the game. <br /><br />Today's strip is a <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic">continuation </a>of the storyline, but no longer relates to <em>Catan</em> anymore, for obvious reasons. We spent the better part of our weekend trading wool for ore, what about you? Expect a full X3F review on <em>Catan</em> to come later this week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/gabe-plays-catan-at-least-we-think-its-gabe/">Gabe plays Catan ... at least, we think it's Gabe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 May 2007 10:00:00 EST. Sure, the so-called <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/queenofcake/62872007/">Queen of Cake</a> made this tribute to <em>Settlers of Catan </em>(cleverly dubbed <em>Settlers of CaKEtan</em>, here) way back in November 2005, but with the board game's recent release on Xbox Live, we couldn't think of a better time to relive pastry goodness. We're done with gaming cuisine for now, check out the highlights for today:<br /><br /><strong>Joystiquery<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View In the Flash: Four Second Firestorm on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/in-the-flash-four-second-firestorm/">In the Flash: Four Second Firestorm</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View The Political Game: Dangerous times for gamers on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/the-political-game-dangerous-times-for-gamers/">The Political Game: Dangerous times for gamers</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Today's typing impaired video: Pac-Man instant messenger on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/todays-typing-impaired-video-pac-man-instant-messenger/">Today's typing impaired video: Pac-Man instant messenger</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Unraveling the Indie - Loonyland 2: Winter Woods on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/unraveling-the-indie-loonyland-2-winter-woods/">Unraveling the Indie - Loonyland 2: Winter Woods</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View X3F's video tour of GoW's Hidden Fronts map pack on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/x3fs-video-tour-of-gows-hidden-fronts-map-pack/">X3F's video tour of GoW's Hidden Fronts map pack</a><br /> <br /><strong>News<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View Microsoft Game Studios to open European branch on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/microsoft-game-studios-to-open-european-branch/">Microsoft Game Studios to open European branch</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Iranian government making strategy games ... finally! on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/iranian-government-making-strategy-games-finally/">Iranian government making strategy games ... finally!</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Iwata lays the smack down on Nintendo of America on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/iwata-lays-the-smack-on-nintendo-of-america/">Iwata lays the smack down on Nintendo of America</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Greenwalt: Forza 2 may make you a better driver on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/greenwalt-forza-2-may-make-you-a-better-driver/">Greenwalt: Forza 2 may make you a better driver</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Next Kingdom Hearts to be portable spin-off, not KHIII on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/next-kingdom-hearts-to-be-portable-spin-off-not-khiii/">Next Kingdom Hearts to be portable spin-off, not KHIII</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Microsoft tightening territory controls on Xbox Live on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/microsoft-tightening-territory-controls-on-xbox-live/">Microsoft tightening territory controls on Xbox Live</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II supply issues in Canada and UK on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/xbox-360-guitar-hero-ii-supply-issues-in-canada-and-england/">Xbox 360 Guitar Hero II supply issues in Canada and UK</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View BusinessWeek: MS most innovative, then Sony and Nintendo on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/businessweek-ms-most-innovative-then-sony-and-nintendo/">BusinessWeek: MS most innovative, then Sony and Nintendo</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View GameFly game availability made clearer on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/gamefly-game-availability-made-clearer/">GameFly game availability made clearer</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View MS's Robbie Bach: Xbox 360 to be profitable next year on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/mss-robbie-bach-xbox-360-to-be-profitable-next-year/">MS's Robbie Bach: Xbox 360 to be profitable next year</a><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/resident-wii-vil-4-officially-priced-at-29-99/" title="View Resident Wii-vil 4 officially priced at $29.99 on Joystiq" target="_blank">Resident Wii-vil 4 officially priced at $29.99</a><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/ds-phat-browser-not-available-in-stores/" title="View DS Phat browser not available in stores on Joystiq" target="_blank">DS Phat browser not available in stores</a><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/lego-star-wars-the-complete-saga-for-wii/" title="View Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii on Joystiq" target="_blank">Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii</a><br /><br /><strong>Rumors &amp; [Update: The <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/05/02/arcade-catan.aspx">good Major says</a> that everything's hunky-dory, so demo to your heart's content.]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/microsoft-xbox-360/">Xbox 360</a> owners are finally able to get a taste of the phenomenon that's been sweeping basements across the globe: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/this-wednesday-settlers-of-catan-enter-xbla-face-centipedes-an/"><em>Catan</em></a>, based on the much more inconveniently titled board game <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/02/settlers-of-catan-hot/">Settlers of Catan</a>, </em>has rolled onto Xbox Live.<em> </em>Unfortunately, if you're interested in the XBLA download, you're going to have to take the guys in the basements' word on it, as <em>Catan</em> has arrived without a free trial.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MajorNelson/">Major Nelson</a> is already <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/05/02/arcade-catan.aspx">on the case</a>, saying that an "issue" was discovered and the trial had to be removed from the service. To answer your questions: Yes, they have their top scientists working on the problem and no, they don't know how long it will take to fix. But hey, it's $10 (800 MS points), live a little! Thousands of guys in basements can't be wrong, and they had to drop $30 for the thing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/catan-now-available-on-xbla-with-no-demo/">Catan now available on XBLA ... with no demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 May 2007 17:56:00 EST. Major Nelson <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/05/02/arcade-catan.aspx">informs</a> us that the trial version was pulled because of a "technical" issue. The Live team is currently working on a fix for the trial version and will put it back on Live as soon as possible. If you've already managed to download the trial version it should work fine (in other words, you don't have to delete it).<br /><br />Of course, if you like taking risks, the full version is still available for 800 points.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/catan-trial-issues-surface-fix-inbound/">Catan trial issues surface, fix inbound</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 May 2007 16:45:00 EST. For weeks upon weeks, we have had no gaps in our gaming goodness. Furthermore, we have even received multiple games during the same week. Now <em>this</em> week we'll be getting both <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Catan/">Catan</a></em> and the <em>Centipede/Millipede </em>combo. We only have one question: what the hell are we supposed to complain about? Xbox Live Arcade was our go-to source for dissatisfaction and now it seems to be humming along ... <em>smoothly</em>. <em>Catan</em> can be had for 800 points, while <em>Centipede</em> and <em>Millipede</em> will set you back a mere 400.<br /><br />Sigh ... it's just not fair.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/xbla-hosts-catan-infested-by-centipedes/">XBLA hosts Catan, infested by Centipedes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 May 2007 09:30:00 EST. <em><strong>THE CATAN GAZETTE -- 30 APRIL 2007<br /> <br /> </strong>Six Corners City, Island of Catan. </em>The astonishing rate at which the settlers of<em> </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/settlersofcatan"><em>Catan</em></a> have transformed the previously uninhabited and decidedly unimpressive island into something civilized is set to slow down this week, when primary construction on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a> comes to a close on <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/04/30/544510.aspx">Wednesday, May 2nd, at 9AM GMT</a> (2AM PST). Mayor Taus Kleuber, whose city will host the entertainment complex, noted that, "I encourage all our settlers to visit the arcade and forget about their jobs for a few hours." <br /><br />It seems that customers are already doing just that, lining up outside the arcade with the required <a href="http://www.mspconverter.com/results.php?MSP=800&amp;conversion=Convert">800 MS Points</a> entry fee already in hand. "It seems like a reasonable price," said one excited teenager. "Then again, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/microsoft-unleashes-4000-point-marketplace-cards/">our currency</a> never made any sense to me." Another woman expressed dismay at the growing excitement. "This new-fangled tomfoolery disgusts me. Why, my little girl's school was attacked by bears the other day because the guy who was making the fence went to check out this arcade. If I were a witch or something, I'd put this thing on a hex for sure!"<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/">Catan (XBLA)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228747"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228746"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228745"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#165968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/catancept01b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />The most important part of establishing a successful arcade is filling it with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/16/this-wednesday-castlevania-mania-straight-from-romania/">quality games</a>. So says self-proclaimed "gamer," Thaddeus McMac. "It's all about the games. When the Xbox Live Arcade opens this week, they're putting up some <em>Centipede</em> and <em>Millipede</em> machines." McMac notes that this "retro" package deal, which lumps together the two similar titles, costs <a href="http://www.mspconverter.com/results.php?MSP=400&amp;conversion=Convert">400 MS points</a> and is perfect for those that enjoyed it before they moved to <em>Catan</em>. "Personally, I think I'll just wait for <em>Catan</em> to get some sunglass stores. I'll need a rose-colored pair before I tangle with those bugs again!"<br /><br /><em>Turn to Page 2 for our riveting poll: How do you pronounce Catan? (Hint: It doesn't rhyme with Satan!)</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/">Centipede / Millipede (XBLA)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/#228752"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/centipede-xbla-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/#228763"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/centipede-xbla-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/#228764"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/centipede-xbla-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/#228753"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/centipede-xbla-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/centipede/#228773"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/centipede-xbla-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/this-wednesday-settlers-of-catan-enter-xbla-face-centipedes-an/">This Wednesday: XBLA settles on Catan, hosts Centipedes and Millipedes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 13:52:00 EST. This week, however, they're changing it up by giving is three titles! Well, two and a half, really, but still, it's pretty badass. We got some retro love with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centipede_%28arcade_game%29"><em>Centipede</em></a> and its sequel <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millipede_%28game%29">Millipede</a>,</em> packed together for 400 Microsoft Points, complete with "Evolved" versions of both. On the newer side of things, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/catan"><em>Catan</em></a>, for 800 MS points, will also be available. We know a lot of readers have been looking forward to <em>Catan</em> coming Arcade, and now the wait is almost over, with two more sleeps to go. So, which off these <strike>three</strike> two are you going to play Wednesday?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/2-5er-in-xbla-this-week-catan-centipede-and-millipede/">2.5er in XBLA this week; Catan, Centipede &amp; Millipede</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 13:30:00 EST. Even better, that month is in fact next month. Yes, <em>Catan </em>is now scheduled to drop onto Xbox Live Arcade in May. The official <em>Catan </em>web page has been updated with the new month as well as a breakdown of the features and achievements for the game. The website also contains wallpapers, buddy icons, and even MP3 downloads of the game's soundtrack. Eager <em>Catan</em> fans should definitely check it out. While we would love an official release date, we take comfort in the fact that <em>Catan</em> is a maximum of 38 days away.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/22/start-settling-catan-in-may/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/catan-gets-a-release-month-its-may/">Catan gets a release month (it's May!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 18:00:00 EST. For board game junkies looking to play with their friends scattered across our little blue planet this news is met with great excitement, and is in good company with the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/carcassonne-making-roads-into-xbox-live-arcade-on-june-7th/"><em>Carcassonne</em> on Xbox Live this June</a>. <br /><br />A description of the game, key features and unlockable achievements can all be found at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/carcassonne-making-roads-into-xbox-live-arcade-on-june-7th/">CatanLive.com</a>. We hope this board game trend continues on Xbox Live and brings a different type of XBLA experience beyond the arcade and puzzle games. We now lobby for the fantastic <em>Caf&eacute; International</em> (with its politically incorrect characters intact) and the chase game <em>Scotland Yard</em>. It really is tragic how many great board games American culture missed out on. If you're tired of picking up <em>Monopoly</em> for the umpteenth time for a family member check out <a href="http://www.spiel-des-jahres.org/cms/front_content.php?idcat=33">Spiel des Jahres</a> for some ideas. Hopefully enough people will vote with their wallets that <em>Catan</em> and <em>Carcassonne</em> are great additions to XBLA.<br /><br />See also:<br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/23/off-the-grid-thanksgiving-edition-or-industry-favorites/">Off the Grid: Industry favorites</a><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/09/off-the-grid-carcassonne-review/">Off the Grid: Carcassonne review</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/22/start-settling-catan-in-may/">Start settling Catan in May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Apr 2007 20:30:00 EST. Big Huge Games, as 360 Fanboy readers know, is the developer of the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/catan"><em>Catan</em></a>. The interview focuses on the challenges of bringing the classic board game to Xbox Live Arcade (and the process of computerizing it in general). Reynolds speaks about creating challenging AI and streamlining the interface so that players aren't drowning in information. The last tidbit, probably the one most of you will be looking for, is that Big Huge Games recently sent what they hope to be the final build of <em>Catan</em> to Microsoft. Assuming it makes it through the Dreaded Certification Process(R), we could be playing <em>Catan</em> in mid-to-late March. It's news that even palpitated the steel heart of <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/02/16">Penny Arcade's Tycho</a>, and for damn good reason. <br /><br />I recently had a chance to discuss <span style="font-style: italic;">Catan</span> with Brian Reynolds, CEO and creative director of Big Huge Games. Reynolds talks at length about the difficult process of adapting such an esteemed title, touching upon issues like designing challenging computer opponents, mapping moves and menus to the 360 controller, and tweaking <span style="font-style: italic;">Catan</span>'s refined rules for ranked and non-ranked matches on Xbox Live. It's all here. And we've got photos too!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Let's talk about how <span style="font-style: italic;">Catan Live</span> was born. Who went to who with the idea? Did Big Huge Games want to make <span style="font-style: italic;">Catan</span> for XBLA, or did Microsoft want Big Huge Games to make <span style="font-style: italic;">Catan</span>?</span><br style="font-weight: bold;" /><br />It was actually Microsoft who approached us - last spring I had no idea the project possibility even existed, but Microsoft was looking for developers to bring "Euro" board games to XBLA, and they came to us early in the process. Obviously once we knew about the project we were very excited.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">So you were tasked with porting a renowned analog title to a digital platform. Where do you begin? What was the absolute first step in designing?</span><br /> <br />Wow, the very first step? In the rulebook for the board game, there are some black-and-white diagrams of the mapboard. I took one of those and xeroxed it up to the size of a full page, and then used it to create a system for numbering the hex tiles, the corners of the tiles, and the edges of the tiles that would be easy for the computer to deal with. Because one of my two initial concerns was whether we'd be able to make a decent A.I. for the computer player, so I started right in on some basic A.I. and rules coding, since I didn't need much graphics work to be done to start working on that.<br /> <br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">The word is that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Teuber">Klaus Teuber</a> had a hand in the project. What did he bring to the development process?</span><br /> <br />Yes, he was instrumental in helping us create the A.I. for the game. It turns out that over the years since designing the original board game, Klaus Teuber has always wanted to have a strong computer player, and so he had put a lot of thought into what the proper strategies and tactics were, and formulas that would be useful for helping a computer player evaluate choices. Of course he'd never had a chance to bring these into play, because the developers of previous versions of the game either didn't have time to do a full treatment of his ideas, or else decided to try their own approach altogether. So he had these Excel spreadsheets full of formulae, plus a nice write-up he'd done. Being an old-time A.I. guy, I looked at these and saw gold: here was somebody (the designer of the game no less) who'd already done the legwork of collecting the tactical situations and strategies, and even done some of the work of creating algorithms to choose between them. So I was able to blast through all of that stuff in a few weeks, and use most of my time refining the really high-end game for the expert players. The result... a much stronger opponent at the top level!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/">Catan (XBLA)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228748"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228747"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228746"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#228745"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/catan-xbla-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/catan/#165968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/02/catancept01b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/off-the-grid-interviews-brian-reynolds-of-big-huge-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Off the Grid interviews Brian Reynolds of Big Huge Games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/off-the-grid-interviews-brian-reynolds-of-big-huge-games/">Off the Grid interviews Brian Reynolds of Big Huge Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 12:00:00 EST. Having announced his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/25/rpg-legend-ken-rolston-retires/">retirement</a> last May, Rolston has been pulled back into the industry by <a href="http://www.bighugegames.com/">Big Huge Games</a>. Big Huge Games, as 360 Fanboy readers will know, is currently developing the Xbox Live Arcade title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/09/catan-to-hit-xbla-this-quarter/"><em>Catan</em></a>. Rolston said of the decision, "A chance to work on a Big Huge Game with Big Huge Games? Who could resist?" He added, "I had planned to retire and rest on my laurels after <em>Oblivion</em>, but Tim and his army of visionary charmers came along with a strikingly original and cunning concept for a console RPG...so now I'm back in the harness and chomping at the bit!"<br /><br />We won't delve into Big Huge Games' practice of putting harnesses on their designers, but the announcement is sure to excite western RPG fans everywhere. Platform designations for the upcoming game have not yet been announced (though it is noted as a console RPG), but considering Big Huge Games has been busy familiarizing themselves with the 360, we're optimistic. <br /><br />[Thanks, J. While this was somewhat expected, given Microsoft's recently announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/30/ten-new-games-for-xbla-new-shots/">lineup</a> of Arcade games, it's still a good sign that the game should show up soon. Also confirmed is that <em>Catan</em> will support three to four players over Xbox Live and that AI opponents will be available. The designer of the original board game and the Arcade version, Klaus Teuber, has been working closely with Brian Reynolds to create challenging opponents. Teuber even admits that he has lost several game to the CPU.<br /><br />If you can't get your fill of <em>Catan</em>, be sure to visit the game's official <a href="http://catanlive.com/catan.shtml">website</a>, where you'll find screenshots and strategies for the upcoming game.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/763/763054p1.html">IGN</a>. <p>Joystiq readers have long asked for <em>Settlers of Catan</em> to be brought to Xbox Live Arcade. When Microsoft <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/23/xbox-live-aracade-to-get-settlers-of-catan-and-other-euro-board-ga/">confirmed that they're working on the game</a>, some readers rejoiced: </p>
<ul>
    <li>"Now THAT is cool. It almost makes a Nintendo fanboy like me want to buy a 360." -- <em>RiemannMeetLebesgue</em> </li>
    <li>"A dream come true. All current online versions of Settlers of Catan are missing the main aspect of the game... voice communication. I cannot wait for this game." -- <em>Ray Kasten</em> </li>
    <li>"prepare for the new most addicting game on XBL" -- <em>Deadpool</em> </li>
    <li>"YES!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS BOARD GAME SO MUCH! This is the best news I've ever heard for 360 :-)" -- <em>CrossFireXT17</em> </li>
</ul>
<p>(You get the picture.)</p>
<p>But some Joystiqers (self included) never really understood what all the fuss was about. Well, count another convert, as of last night. Here's a (brief) tale of how I became a <em>Settlers of Catan</em> addict.</p>
<p>The invitation to the New Year's Eve get-together encouraged partygoers to bring their favorite board or card games. Being provincial, I brought over a couple DSs with <em>Tetris DS</em>, intending to share my love of head-to-head Tetris with attendees. When I arrived, however, a game of <em>Settlers of Catan</em> had just been laid out on the dining room table. Curious to see what the fuss was about, I put away the DSs. They were not touched all evening.</p>
<p>We had trouble tearing ourselves away from the game board for the New Year's countdown, we were so into the game. After the ball dropped over the slack-jawed revelers in Times Square, we returned to the den and played for a couple more hours. <em>Settlers of Catan</em> plays like a multiplayer version of <em>Civilization, </em>with four players taking turns to build roads, settlements, and cities in an attempt to control scarce natural resources. It's simple, it's fun, and it's -- huzzah! -- coming to XBLA, eventually. Waiting's hard, though -- I've already filled and abandoned two shopping carts full of Settlers merch, but will wait to see if the XBLA version satisfies the jones.</p>
