At least in Mew-Genics it is - today's tidbit about the game teases Frank's Cat Races, a sewer-based scheme where players will be able to test how fast their felines are and potentially find their fortunes, Team Meat writes.

We met the mastermind behind the cat races, Frank, in November, and if you'll recall, he has "head problems." He also has a tail, though apparently it's not much of a problem.
Mew-Genics reveals the sordid world of sewer cat racing originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Jan 2013 21:00:00 EST. The latest teaser image follows suit, as it divulges a "Cryo-Cube 5000" that seems to freeze cats (or food) for future use.

Last week's teaser revealed the Boon County Cat Pageant that Mew-Genics players will apparently participate in. The game includes a trinket display case for all the "stuff" that players acquire, which sometimes "appear imbued with magic properties that change space and time."

Collectable trinkets include food, vomit, kittens, mail and petrified poop. The petrified poop shown in the picture "slightly lowers damage taken," so at least we can assume that this game about cats (many cats) includes some kind of health and damage system. Of course, the petrified poop seen here also lowers the "poop rate" of all cats, so there are apparently some other gameplay elements happening here. There are 105 trinket types in Mew-Genics, each with semi randomly-generated properties.
Latest Mew-Genics teaser collects trinkets with 'magic properties' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 16 Dec 2012 10:30:00 EST. The developer blog explains that the enormous number "only applies to how the cat looks, if you include its personality variables that number multiplies by A LOT."

Team Meat added that "ability variables and personal stats" could practically guarantee that you'll never get the same cat twice in the game. Not that we know what that entails, since all we really know about Mew-Genics is that it's "kind of" about cats. Lots of them.
Mew-Genics to hoard over 12 sextillion cats originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 01 Dec 2012 19:30:00 EST. We knew previously that the app would hit Vita by the end of June.

YouTube on Vita will play HD videos up to 720p, with the option to toggle between standard and HD. The app will have many standard YouTube features, including recommended videos, comments, history, favorites and the all-important "search" function.

Most importantly of all, the YouTube app will allow Vita users to access the shiny new Joystiq YouTube channel, revamped with new content, fresh videos and original features. We guess people on computers, using smartphones and browsing tablets can access the Joystiq channel, too, but can they do it while stroking the back of their screen? Well, yeah, but that would just look weird.
YouTube app goes live on Vita today for all your gaming-video needs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 19:30:00 EST. We were totally on board through "ChatChat is a game about being a cat," but we threw up our hands in incredulity at "and talking to other cats." We'll be a cat, sure, but a talking cat? Too far, Terry Cavanagh. Too far.

Cavanagh is the (mad)man behind VVVVVV and At a Distance, and ChatChat (we assume pronounced "Chat cat," with the second "h" as a soft "whipped" sound) is one of a few smaller projects he's working on this year. It involves running around various forests, "mush rooms," alleyways and secret areas, and figuring out the ways you can interact with the environment and other cats. Yes, you can talk to the other cats in your room, but you can also meow, purr, screech and turn into a dog to play tag with your cat friends.

You can play ChatChat on Kongregate right now and learn why cats seem to find it so amusing to lurk around abandoned alleyways, kill mice and, as the game's instructions suggest, "be a cat."
Cavanagh's ChatChat teaches the finer points of feline life originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 20:00:00 EST.
It's been a while since we last saw The Behemoth's Battleblock Theater in action, so if you're forgetting all of the pertinent deets, let us remind you: The game, by the creators of XBLA superhit Castle Crashers, throws a few players with strangely-shaped heads into a theater run by cats and tasks them with navigating a maze of traps and troubles for the cats' presumed entertainment.

You can see some of that entertainment in this brand-new video, which features Prisoner 10321 and the game's co-op "throwing" mechanic, which allows players to launch their frienemies across gaps, into portal-like devices ... or into spikes and pits, if they happen to not be so fond of them at a given moment.

The official Behemoth blog says there's complexity here, too: you'll go farther when both characters are facing the same way, or not as far if they're facing apart. And while players can slide tackle each other while fighting, the throw move can cancel that out, blocking the slide and instead sending the slider into danger. We tell you that now so that when it happens in the game, you're not actually thrown for the proverbial loop.
New BattleBlock Theater video throws a little surprise party originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 21:30:00 EST. Building upon the previous Kinect hack that allows you to scanify yourself into MineCraft, this latest update allows you to scale said model and, even better, now supports animations for up to three seconds. Imagine it: your faithful recreation of BioShock can now have an actual moving, talking head of Andrew Ryan greeting you upon entry into Rapture. Who wouldn't want that?

Or you could just tease your cat with a laser pointer like in the video demonstration past the break, we guess.
Continue reading Kinect hack: Minecraft statues (now with animation!)

Kinect hack: Minecraft statues (now with animation!) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Jan 2011 18:00:00 EST. You play as a cat going through the initiation into the company, performing various minigames to earn Rena's respect.

The Orange Lounge Radio podcast discovered the game, which they have dubbed President Cat, then began Tweeting the Wii game's official account. Fans started sending messages of encouragement and support to the #presidentcat hashtag, and the Rena account has started responding in both Japanese and English, revealing that the publisher is excited and a little confused about all this sudden attention.

It would be hilarious if this grassroots movement resulted in the localization of a weird licensed game. However, it would also be pretty sad if the publisher turned out to lose money on it. It's definitely something we want to play, but we're not exactly representative of the mainstream audience.

[Thanks, act_def]
Fans campaigning for President Cat originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 10:35:00 EST. It's official -- when promoting video games, regular-sized advertising structures just don't cut it anymore. LittleBigPlanet's bite-sized billboards were a step in the right direction, though Warner Bros. just took the miniature advertising game to a smaller, mobile and more adorable level. In the future, when rookie industry analysts inquire as to how F.E.A.R. 2 became the best-selling game of all time, their weathered superiors will become lost in a haze of nostalgia, muttering through a slight grin -- "Catvertising."

If you live in foggy Londontown, keep an eye out over the next few days for black cats who are unknowingly promoting F.E.A.R. 2's Friday the 13th release date. Before PETA flips their easily flippable lid, we should mention that the cats aren't being painted, or treated inhumanely. They're just wearing little F.E.A.R. 2-branded kitten coats, which you can order for your own precious lil' guy, provided you live in the London area, and you don't have a morbidly obese house cat.

[Thanks, Ben S.]
F.E.A.R. 2 advertising with billboard-infused cats originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 22:15:00 EST. We're already well acquainted with the idea of Wiis (and their remotes) injuring humans and TV sets. Now the UK's Telegraph is reporting that game systems are also causing a veritable epidemic of injuries to pets. A survey of 3,000 British pet owners shows that a full 10% of pets were injured by a Wii , while 8.3% sustained PlayStation-related injuries and 5.8% got injured by a DS.

Even accounting for some overlap between systems, those numbers would seem to suggest that British veterinarians are being overrun by little critters who chewed through component cables, swallowed portable systems, tripped on controller cords and the like. The numbers are much less worrying, though, when you consider the source for the survey: pet insurance provider PetPlan. Reminds us of that used car dealer who told us rust-proofing would increase the resale value of our car by 50% -- just not that credible. We still got the rust-proofing, though. When it comes to our Fiat, our motto is: better safe than sorry.
Survey: Game systems causing cat-astrophic pet injuries originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 11:55:00 EST. While others commented on the casual space's size and growth, Reuters decided to focus on how men are lying, stealing bastards when it comes to casual games.

According to the CGA report, while men are just as likely as women to play casual games, the fairer sex is much more likely to pay for these games (women make up 74% of paying players). What accounts for the difference? According to Retuers, men are "more determined to find a free version or try to thwart anti-piracy protections on games." Or, y'know, they could be playing the copies their wives bought. We hope that's it, because finding a crack for a $20 game of Peggle is just sad.

But that's not all -- the Reuters report also reveals that men are more likely to hide their secret casual gaming shame. "The hardcore gamer who is playing 'Halo' with his buddies isn't going to brag that he just beat the next level of 'Zuma'." CGA Managing Director Jessica Tams told Reuters. And if they won't cop to playing Zuma, what are the chances they'll admit to an undying love for Flower Shop: Big City Break? Not large.

Well it's time for the healing to begin. Men, use the comment thread below to come out of the casual gaming closet and announce to the world your proclivity for matching gems and dashing between diners. We won't judge you ... much.
Men more likely to steal, lie about casual games originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2007 10:39:00 EST. Those who love Nintendogs and feel compelled to take care of tiny, virtual animals will be given a whole set of new ones to care for come this November. But for our (hypothetical) pet simulator money, Love Cat Life wins over Nintendo's masterpiece, for mostly hilarious reasons:

Simulated litterboxes

Riding a little cat-sized truck over a ramp

Meowing music game!

But now, video games are being portrayed as the cause of a much graver threat; namely, the decline in Australian pet ownership.

As Australian Veterinary Association President Kersti Seksel told the Sydney Morning Herald (and any other outlet that would listen) today's kids "interact more by playing computer games and less by going out there and throwing the ball to a dog." Why is this a problem, exactly? According to Seksel, "We need to learn people skills, physical skills, and sitting in the lounge room with a computer doesn't teach you that."

Leaving aside for a second the idea of learning "people skills" from playing with an animal, implying that game playing and pet ownership are somehow mutually exclusive is a little ridiculous. You might as well argue that reading books and talking on the phone are dangerous pastimes because they take away from time with poor, neglected Fido.

Pet ownership usually takes up only a small part of a child's day, and singling out video games for distracting from that time strikes us as a little opportunistic. And while "you can't hug a computer," as the SMH article points out in the lede, you also don't have to take a computer out for walks. Man's best friend, indeed.

Games blamed for decline in Aussie pet ownership originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 12:25:00 EST. Instead of just any old thing being put on cats, they're going to concentrate on just putting Wiimotes on the fuzzy little guys. To help kick the site off right, we've submitted our very own entry. Ladies and gentleman, meet Link. He's a 5ish-year-old cat who enjoys overeating, bothering his sister, Zelda, and knocking things off counters. Like Wiimotes.
