We know, shock horror (ho ho ho), but more interesting is that the third main entry in the series scored 26.6 percent less UK launch sales than its predecessor. 65 percent of those sales were for the Xbox 360 version, 31 percent for PS3, and 4 percent for PC (although that discounts digital purchases).<br /><br />Last week's leader, <em>Ni no Kuni</em>, dropped to sixth following a 63 percent dip in sales. More alarmingly, after just four weeks <em>DmC: Devil May Cry</em> slumped all the way down to 25th. That's concerning considering how quiet 2013's been in terms of major releases so far.<br /><br />As for the rest of this week's ten best-sellers, there's been barely any movement. The remaining standouts are <em>Hitman: HD Trilogy</em>, which held steady in fifth place, and <em>Sonic &amp; All-Stars Racing Transformed</em>, which entered the top ten for the first time on the back of the newly released 3DS version.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/dead-space-3-rockets-to-top-spot-in-this-weeks-uk-charts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space 3 rockets to top spot in this week's UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/11/dead-space-3-rockets-to-top-spot-in-this-weeks-uk-charts/">Dead Space 3 rockets to top spot in this week's UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2013 08:00:00 EST. No, that doesn't sound right...<br /><br />Well, pierce me a lantern and call me Mr Drippy, because the PS3-exclusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ni-no-kuni"><em>Ni no Kuni</em></a> is indeed this week's best-selling game in the UK. To give you an idea of just how surprising this is, you have to go back almost exactly a year for the last JRPG to take top spot in Her Majesty's kingdom, and that was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/06/final-fantasy-xiii-2-metal-gear-collection-debut-atop-uk-charts/"><em>Final Fantasy 13-2</em></a>. And here's an even more staggering stat for you: by Chart-Track's data there isn't another clear-cut example of a chart-topping JRPG that's not a Final Fantasy or Pok&eacute;mon game <strong>in the last decade</strong>. Bam! Have a new trailer to commemorate the feat.<br /><br /><em>Ni no Kuni'</em>s impressive ascent pushed <em>Black Ops 2</em> down to third, while <em>DmC: Devil May Cry</em> fell out of the top ten altogether after just two weeks, down now in 11th. The other new entry in the top ten is the <em>Hitman: HD Trilogy</em>, which debuted at fifth.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/04/ni-no-kuni-casts-an-historic-spell-on-the-uk-charts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ni no Kuni casts a spell on the UK charts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/04/ni-no-kuni-casts-an-historic-spell-on-the-uk-charts/">Ni no Kuni casts a spell on the UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 08:00:00 EST. The "freemium" business model has infected a wide swath of the gaming universe, from casual Facebook games, to shooters, MMOs and all manner of mobile offerings, and for good reason: These games hemorrhage cash money. That free-flowing river of <em>skrill</em> has to come from somewhere, though, and the mobile research group Flurry seems to have found an answer. <br />
<br />
Drawing from a sample size of approximately 20 million users across 110 thousand Android and iOS apps, Flurry has determined that people aged 25 to 34 are responsible for <em>49 percent</em> of the money spent on content in freemium titles. Interestingly, users between the ages of 18 to 24 <em>played</em> the most, contributing 32 percent of overall playtime, but they actually spent far less than their wizened elders. No specific dollar amounts were referenced, but we have a feeling they'd be <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/6/10/">fairly significant</a>. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/freemium-isnt-free-25-to-34-year-olds-spend-the-most-on-extra/">Freemium isn't free: 25 to 34 year olds spend the most on extra content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 20:30:00 EST. According to <a href="http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6333">unofficial sales numbers from Japan</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> has fallen down to number four on the sales list over there, after a very big <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/18/final-fantasy-xiii-launch-day-sales-exceed-1-million-in-japan/">million-plus release day</a> and a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/24/final-fantasy-xiii-limit-breaks-japanese-ps3-software-sales-reco/">record-breaking first week</a>. But <em>otaku</em> take heart: even though sales of the game dropped over a million units in the second week, this wasn't unexpected. <br />
<em><br />
Final Fantasy</em> games always tend to take a dip after the "day one purchase" audience gets their copies. The last iteration of the series took a 1.5 million unit hit in week two. But even with the lower sales, about 200,000 copies were traded for the appropriate cost in yen, which indicates <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> is likely still on track to meet or exceed its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/square-enix-expects-final-fantasy-xiii-sales-to-exceed-6-million/">six million target worldwide</a>. That's <em>a lot</em> of chocobos.<br />

After the last <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/august-npd-ps3-sales-soar-as-gamers-go-batty-for-arkham-asylum/">two</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/september-npd-obviously-destined-to-sell-tons/#continued">months</a> of price drop-fueled sales surges, it's almost comforting to see all these red arrows. Hardware sales are down 17% from last month and down 10% from the year prior, with only the Wii maintaining any upward momentum as we head into the two busiest shopping months of the year. The PS3 lost the highest percentage, but that's hardly surprising following last month's meteoric 134% spike in sales. <br /> <br /> On the software side of things, the exceptionally well-received PlayStation 3-exclusive <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Uncharted-2-Among-Thieves/">Uncharted 2: Among Thieves</a></em> took top honors, selling 537K units in just the second half of October. Of course, Sony told us earlier today that the title has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/12/sony-uncharted-2-has-sold-over-one-million-copies/">broken the coveted million mark</a> (worldwide?) with November sales factored in. The multiplatform <em>Borderlands</em> makes a similarly impressive showing, taking third on Xbox 360 with 418K units sold; however, when you factor in the 113K units sold of the not-top-ten PS3 version (data provided graciously by NPD), you find an impressive 531K in cumulative sales, just missing the top spot.<br /> <br /> <em>NBA 2K10</em> had a strong showing with 524K in cumulative sales, "outselling last year's NBA 2K9 by 60% in its launch month" reports the NPD, while last month's champ, <em>Halo 3: ODST</em>, dropped to sixth with 271K in sales. With just four days on shelves in October, <em>Forza Motorsport 3</em> made a strong showing at #8 with 175K. Slightly less strong was <span style="font-style: italic;">Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days' </span>ninth-place showing despite a full month on the shelf. And in last place is the worldwide phenomenon known as <em>FIFA 10</em> (or, in North America, <em>FIFA Soccer 10</em>). <br />
If you're like us -- and, we figure after all these years we've been secretly brainwashing you, <em>you are</em> -- then the recent console <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/price-cut">price cuts</a> were met with your curiosity over how these discounts would affect the vast gaming sales landscape. Fortunately, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=25741">Gamasutra</a> has posted a chart (using NPD figures) that measures how the price cuts altered two factors: each console's average sale price during the month of September and its year-to-date sales (through September).<br />
<br />
This first figure proves the most telling about how the market reacted to the slashed prices. For instance, the average price at which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/its-official-playstation-3-price-drops-to-299/">PS3s</a> were purchased in September was a flat $300; meaning an overwhelming majority of buyers responded favorably to the discount. Though the price of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/nintendo-officially-announces-price-drop-to-199-in-us/">Wii</a> didn't get cut until the last week of September, the console's average price dropped to $218 -- also indicative of a reactionary market surge. The average <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/microsoft-confirms-xbox-360-price-cut-300-elite-on-friday-25/">Xbox 360</a> purchased price, however, actually increased by a buck to $261. By Gamasutra's calculations, folks purchased three Elites ($300) for every Arcade model ($200) sold during the month.<br />
<br />
The PS3 was the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/september-npd-obviously-destined-to-sell-tons/">top-selling console</a> in September, which is the first time it's ever managed a first-place sales finish. It's still in last place in the 2009 year-to-date totals, though, and Sony's system would need to outsell Xbox 360 by about 35,000 units every week until the end of the year to break even with its competitor. Passing up the Wii, however, would require an act of divine intervention -- Nintendo's console is currently sitting on YTD sales of 4 million, which is more than twice the total of PS3 sales.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/gamasutra-breaks-down-console-sales-in-light-of-price-cuts/">Gamasutra breaks down console sales in light of price cuts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 10:00:00 EST. We're not sure what's more impressive: That a cricket game was actually outselling <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort">Wii Sports Resort</a> </em>for two weeks in the UK, or that Nintendo's latest minigame melange only outsold <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wolfenstein">Wolfenstein</a> </em>by 2,000 copies for the week of August 16 to 22. That's what the latest numbers and report from <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&amp;ct=110015">Chart Track</a> show, placing the id Software / Raven shooter at the top of the PS3, 360 and PC charts for its first week on sale.<br /><br />We'll have to wait for NPD's numbers to see how the FPS fared on this side of the pond, but it's pretty obvious that -- the world over -- everybody loves killing some Nazis. Take a peek after the break to see what else the Brits have been buying up lately.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&amp;ct=110015">Source</a> -- Chart Trak, week ending 8/22<br /><a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=688&amp;s=1111">Source</a> -- Wii Sports Resort keeps Wolfenstein at bay<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/wii-sports-resort-barely-bests-wolfenstein-in-the-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Sports Resort barely bests Wolfenstein in the UK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/wii-sports-resort-barely-bests-wolfenstein-in-the-uk/">Wii Sports Resort barely bests Wolfenstein in the UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 18:30:00 EST. We imagine those six multicolored lines you see above are going to cause quite a stir among the various fanboy contingencies -- they represent the percentage of "active users" on different consoles in the first half of 2009, according to <a href="http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/media_entertainment/hottest-june-on-record-for-video-gaming/">survey data compiled by Nielsen</a>. As you can see, the Xbox 360 dominated the charts, while the ubiquitously successful Wii came in dead last by a huge margin, ranking below the PS2, original Xbox and GameCube.<br /><br />Our initial reaction to this data was that Nielsen is <em>high on pot</em>, but we can kinda understand what caused the Wii's disappointing placement on the list -- the chart is tracking the percent of console owners who use their gaming hardware on a regular basis. Everyone and their dog owns a Wii by this point, but very few actually play them consistently, according to Nielsen's findings. Meanwhile, there's only a handful of GameCubes out there that haven't been converted into lunchboxes, and their owners apparently use them a bit more frequently.<br /><br />If you're looking for a more straightforward breakdown of console usage, Nielsen also figured the overall usage totals for each console. That chart's posted after the jump. (You'll find it slightly above the deluge of inflammatory comments.)<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/wii-has-fewest-percentage-of-active-users-says-nielsen/">IndustryGamers</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/nielsen-360-has-most-active-users-in-2009-wii-has-fewest/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nielsen: 360 has most 'active users' in 2009, Wii has fewest</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/11/nielsen-360-has-most-active-users-in-2009-wii-has-fewest/">Nielsen: 360 has most 'active users' in 2009, Wii has fewest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 14:00:00 EST. <div align="left">The top 10 chart for PSN releases in the month of June is <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/07/indepth_playstation_network_sa.php">now out</a>, and it's quite an interesting list. It's no surprise that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-vii"><em>Final Fantasy VII</em></a> is sitting pretty at the top, but we're intrigued to see that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wolfenstein-3d"><em>Wolfenstein 3D</em></a> managed to hit the number two spot. Not only that, but it beat out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid"><em>Metal Gear Solid</em></a>, which got no higher than number four, directly below <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil"><em>Resident Evil</em></a>, which released in May. <br /><br />So PS1 games seem to be selling pretty well. After two years of consumers <em>clamoring</em> for more PS1 classics, we're not surprised, but hopefully this will spur publishers to release more in the near future. </div>

<div align="left">So it turns out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fight-night-round-4"><em>Fight Night Round 4</em></a> is a <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&amp;ct=110015">real <em>hit</em></a> over in the UK. A real <em>hit</em>. That's a joke. What isn't a joke is that the game is enjoying a second week at the number one spot, despite competition from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tiger-woods-pro-tour-10"><em>Tiger Woods Pro Tour 10</em></a>, which debuted at number 2. We say "competition," but no matter which one you buy the money's still going in EA's pocket -- something that doesn't happen when you buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/transformers"><em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em></a>, which surged from number 6 to number 3 this week.<br /><br />The bundling of Wii MotionPlus with <em>Tiger Woods</em> doesn't seem to have impacted too much on sales, as it debuted at number 4 in the Wii charts. <em>Grand Slam Tennis</em> -- which is also bundled with MotionPlus -- swapped places with <em>EA Sports Active</em>, jumping from number 3 to number 2. None of which seem to be able to get close to that <em>other</em> Wii peripheral, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, which sits comfortably at the top of the Wii chart, as usual.</div>

Considering certain independent iPhone App developers have been making towering mountains of cash, you'd think that the financial status of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=XNA%20Community%20Games">XNA Community Games</a> market would be just as favorable. However, according to <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/03/gamerbytes_analysis_xna_commun.php">a recent report from GamerBytes</a>, who dug up the sales figures of a number of XNA titles, this couldn't be further from the truth -- the combined sales total of the 24 titles they tracked was a mere 23,907 purchases, with an underwhelming conversion rate (ratio of people who purchase a game to total demo downloads) of just 7.1 percent.<br /><br />Of course, with no impetus on the developers to reveal their financial data, the report is far from conclusive. When queried about their sales statistics, many of the developers gave rough estimates (or no answer at all), and a few of the service's "high-profile" titles, such as <em>Colosseum</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/gamerbytes-picks-top-xna-community-games/"><em>CarneyVale: Showtime</em></a>, are completely unaccounted for. Take GamerBytes' conclusions with a few grains of salt, but based on their research, it certainly seems XNA Community Games have gotten off to a molasses-slow start.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/30/gamerbytes-study-shows-disappointing-sales-for-xna-community-gam/">GamerBytes study shows disappointing sales for XNA Community Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 16:30:00 EST. Have you ever found yourself wondering what a statistical breakdown of all the songs in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Rock%20Band%202">Rock Band 2</a></em> might look like while in the midst of one of the game's heavy metal power solos? Admittedly, that's not the most <em>hard rockingest</em> thing we've ever heard -- still, you may want to point your mathematical curiosities at gaming blog Pwn or Die, who recently <a href="http://www.pwnordie.com/blog/posts/14300">sorted the series' 591 tracks into different categories</a> using simple bar graphs and <em>delicious-looking</em> pie charts.<br /><br />Here's some of the more interesting tidbits we gleaned from the charts -- nearly three-quarters of the available songs <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly">come from DLC</a>, though only about one-quarter of said content is currently available on the Wii version of the game. The decade that spawned the most of the available tracks is the 2000s (making up about 40 percent of the songs), while the tunes of the 1920s remain tragically unspoken for. You can check out <a href="http://www.pwnordie.com/blog/posts/14300">the rest of the charts here</a>!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/rock-band-track-catalog-gets-statistical-ized/">Rock Band track catalog gets statistical-ized</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 16:19:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war"><em>Call of Duty: World At War</em></a> continues its slow descent down the UK Charts this week, ending up at number four, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> clings onto the number one spot for the millionth week in a row. New contender <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>FEAR 2</em></a> gives an admirable performance, making its way to the number two spot, though we suspect this may not last very long. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House Of The Dead: Overkill</em></a> sadly didn't make the top ten, instead coming in at number 15. Considering the number of Wii owners clamoring for hardcore games, they don't seem to be <em>buying</em> them when they actually appear.<br /><br />With <em>Wii Fit</em>, <em>Wii Play</em>, <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> and <em>Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games</em> all in the top ten week after week, is it any wonder developers are more likely to produce waggle-thons and mini-game collections for the console?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/fear-2-debuts-at-number-2-in-uk-charts/">FEAR 2 debuts at #2 in UK charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 18:50:00 EST. "No matter how you slice it, the Wii third party game story is not a pretty one," says David Dennis, group manager of corporate peeyarr at Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. The fighting talk comes in response to a recent claim by Nintendo that the Wii was besting its competitors (reminder: Sony and Microsoft) in terms of third-party game sales, a claim Microsoft has told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/microsoft-the-wii-third-party-game-story-is-not-a-pretty-one">GamesIndustry.biz</a> is incorrect. <br /><br />According to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NPD/">NPD</a> third-party software figures, Microsoft's system has sold 67,929,999 units, followed by the Wii at 33,394,311 units and the PlayStation 3 at 19,976,325. Looking at sales occurring since the launch of the Wii, the Xbox 360 has managed 54,065,728 units (compared to Wii's 33,394,211), though it obviously benefited from having a larger install base to feed off at the time. <br /><br />This particular third-party tussle has been going on since last week, when the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/09/nintendo-releases-third-party-sales-chart-npd-clarifies-some-de/">NPD delved into sales numbers</a> and revealed the Wii to be ahead when compared to its competitors' <em>initial </em>19 months. It's all a matter of perspective, you see, albeit one that publishers (releasing games for the market as it exists right now) might not necessarily adopt. Still, with the hardware battle being won by Wii, it isn't surprising to see Microsoft putting up a fight on a more even battleground.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/microsoft-disputes-nintendos-third-party-victory-claims/">Microsoft disputes Nintendo's third-party victory claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 16:00:00 EST. If pressed, though, we'll have to choose <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/two-glorious-minutes-of-stafy-action/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Densetsu no Stafi 5</span></a>, because 1) Stafy is just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/stafy-is-even-more-adorable-in-motion/">the cutest </a>and 2) it performed better than the rest. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/bust-ghosts-and-wish-upon-stars-with-band-brothers-dx/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Band Brothers DX</span></a><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>is inching toward 200,000 sales, though, and will probably hit that landmark next week.<br /><br />The other DS love goes to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/ds-chooses-boys-over-flowers/" style="font-style: italic;">Hana Yori Dango: Koi Seyo Onago</a>, an otome based on an anime/manga/j-drama. Although the chances of it happening are about ... zero ... we'd love to see that one localized, as <span style="font-style: italic;">Hana Yori Dango</span> is one of our guilty pleasures. Last but not least, we'll mention the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/gegege-no-kitarou-to-feature-jacket-gliding-wang-monsters/">sometimes inappropriate</a> <span style="font-style: italic;">Gegege no Kitarou</span>, which debuted in ninth. (Oh yeah -- there's also <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/derby-stallion"><span style="font-style: italic;">Derby Stallion</span></a>, but <em>really</em>.)<br /><br />Software sales gave DS hardware a small boost, but Nintendo's handheld is still stuck behind the PSP:<br />

With the<span style="font-style: italic;"> Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</span> craze finally starting to quiet a bit, we don't think it will be too long before the PSP dips closer to DS sales (as long as Nintendo's handheld can maintain its <em>own</em> momentum). Enough about the future, though -- it's all about the <span style="font-style: italic;">now</span>. So, go on and see how software fared last week in Japan by clicking past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-30-7-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/30-7/6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-30-7-6/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/30-7/6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. This Wii had a lot of software representation in the top ten this week, with a third-party game taking the highest honors -- Namco Bandai's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/tales-of-symphonia-videos-pretty-much-show-off-the-entire-game/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World</span></a>. Japan's Wii RPG love wasn't enough to put the newest <em>Tales </em>game into first place, though; a DS title about horse racing, <em>Derby Stallion</em>, took that coveted position. Yet, <em>Symphonia's</em> first week sales are pretty impressive.<br /><br />The other Wii games that found themselves in the top ten were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/a-guided-tour-of-mario-super-sluggers-stadiums/"><em>Mario Super Sluggers</em></a>, and of course <em><a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-fit">Wii Fit</a></em> and <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/mario-kart"><em>Mario Kart</em></a>. As for hardware, the Wii dropped to third place, falling behind the DS by a minuscule margin:<br /><img hspace="4" border="0" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/wiihardwaresales_0704.jpg" alt="" /><br />To see the top ten software sales numbers and rankings, just clicky clicky on the "continue reading" link below.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/04/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-23-6-29/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/23-6/29</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/04/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-23-6-29/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/23-6/29</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 19:30:00 EST. Oh, Japanese gamers, how we love you -- after all, only you would buy 150,000 copies of <span style="font-style: italic;">Derby Stallion</span> in one week. Such sales were enough to put this DS horse racing sim into first place, above <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/nintendo-delays-daigasso-band-brothers-bootlegging/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Band Brothers DX</span></a> and even the Wii's <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tales-of-symphonia/">Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World</a>.</span> Besides <span style="font-style: italic;">Derby Stallion</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Band Brothers</span>, another DS title that made it into the top ten was <span style="font-style: italic;">Higurashi no Naku Koru ni Kazuna</span>, a murder mystery visual novel.<br /><br />The beauty of it all is that this DS software success managed to propel DS hardware into second place, barely skating past the Wii:<br />

Meanwhile, <em>Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team's</em> steady climb back into the top ten makes us wonder if supply just wasn't meeting demand <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-2-6-8/">a few weeks earlier</a>, when the game fell out of the top thirty. <br /><br />Yet overall, the DS had a relatively boring week in terms of software, with no exciting new releases to congratulate or poke fun at (unless you consider the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/sega-dishes-out-new-puyo-screens/">budget-priced re-release</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/18/puyo-pop-celebrates-15-years-with-new-game/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary</span></a> "exciting" and "new").<br /><br />If you want to see what Japanese gamers <span style="font-style: italic;">were</span> buying last week, though, just click on past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-16-6-22/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/16-6/22</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-16-6-22/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/16-6/22</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 11:45:00 EST. Oh, how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-9-6-15/">the mighty have fallen</a>. Well, except for the PSP, that is. Sony's handheld is still as mighty as ever. Even so, the Wii toppled all the other home consoles once again last week, reclaiming its second-place spot:<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><img hspace="4" border="0" vspace="4" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/wiisales_cs_nwf_0627.png" /><br />The new Wii kid <strike>on the block</strike> in the charts is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/25/a-guided-tour-of-mario-super-sluggers-stadiums/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Super Sluggers</span></a>, which didn't sell as well as we thought it would, considering that it's a <em>baseball</em> game -- one published <span style="font-style: italic;">by Nintendo</span>, no less. That's why we love Japanese sales so much, though. Just when we think we have the country all figured out, it goes and surprises us again.<br /><br />Everything else Wii related is pretty much just business as usual, but check past the break to see where the games ranked in the top thirty and how much the top tenners sold.<br /></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-16-6-22/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/16-6/22</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-16-6-22/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/16-6/22</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 11:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Last week in Japan was all about Sony dominance, as <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/win-a-kojima-signed-copy-of-mgs4/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear Solid 4</span></a> rocketed the PS3 into first. Fourth! Meaning, it only did better than the PS2 and 360. Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake! <br /><br />DS hardware did get a little boost, though, despite the fact that not much new software made its way into the charts:

There were some surprises this week, as <span style="font-style: italic;">Let's Make a Pro Baseball</span> <em>Team!</em> found itself back in the top thirty (so did <span style="font-style: italic;">Pok&eacute;mon Diamond</span>). But, you can just see all the <span style="font-style: italic;">hot</span> software action for yourself after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-9-6-15/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/9-6/15</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-6-9-6-15/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 6/9-6/15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-fit"><span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Fit</span></a> gained some competition last week, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/active-screens-outdoor-challenge/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Family Trainer</span></a> finally made its debut in Japan. Even so, Namco Bandai's game couldn't overtake Nintendo's six-month-old fitness title. Many Wii games were also pushed to the bottom of the top thirty in this week's chart, with <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><span style="font-style: italic;">Smash Bros. Brawl</span></a> in danger of falling off completely. <br /><br />Despite less than stellar software sales, Wii hardware performed well. After a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-12-5-18/">somewhat stalwart week</a>, DS software recovered nicely and once again dominated the charts. Even though the same amount of games appeared in the top thirty (fifteen in total), they ranked higher on average than they did in the previous week. Good software sales also gave DS hardware a little boost:<br />

</ul>
Four new games debuted in the top thirty, including Sega's <span style="font-style: italic;">Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team!</span>, which nabbed the first place spot from <em>Monster Hunter</em>. The other three games were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/animated-intro-of-herakles/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Glory of Herakles</span></a>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Scarlet Fragment</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Tea Dogs Room 3</span>. <em>Herakles</em> (or <em>Hercules</em>, if you prefer) is the title that sparks our interest the most, as it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/glorious-website-of-herakles/">an interesting RPG</a> published by Nintendo. Even so, it's first week sales were (unfortunately) subpar, yet good enough to land it in the top ten.<br /><br />Check out the sales numbers and rankings for yourself after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-19-5-25/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/19-5/25</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-19-5-25/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/19-5/25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. No new Wii games debuted last week; at least, none that ended up in the top thirty. There was one teensy weensy title that was introduced into the Japanese market, though. You may have heard of it: <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-3/">Guitar Hero III</a>.<br /><br />To put it bluntly, sales for the game were <em>low</em>. In fact, it didn't even make the top fifty in Media Create's charts, and Famitsu reports that the title only sold 1,300 copies. Compared to sales in other regions (like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">North America</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/another-week-in-europe">Europe</a>, for example), where <span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III </span>performed fiercely, you can see that tastes often differ between western and eastern gamers.<br /><br />Other than that, there's not to much to report about the software charts. <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/05/wii-fanboy-review-battalion-wars-2/">Battalion Wars 2</a> managed to hang in the top ten, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-kart/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart Wii</span></a> slipped into third place. Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Smash Bros. Brawl</span></a> might be in danger of falling out of the top thirty soon.<br /><br />In hardware, the gap between the Wii and the PSP lessened as sales for Nintendo's console rose, while sales for Sony's handheld fell. Still, the PSP had a lead of about 15,000 units last week, keeping the Wii locked in its second place spot:<br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/picsales519525_cs_0530.png" /><br />The software numbers are located after the break, so go on and take a look.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-19-5-25/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/19-5/25</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-19-5-25/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/19-5/25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. Will it stay there? Our guess is no, sadly. Still, it's nice to see the game get some recognition in Japan.<br /><br />Once again, the only non-Nintendo title for the Wii that made the top thirty was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/wrup-not-one-not-two-but-ten-whole-sports-edition/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Deca Sports</span></a>, which dropped thirteen spots <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-5-5-11/">from the week before</a>. <span style="font-style: italic;">Ouch</span>. We're not sure what made Japan fall so out of love with <span style="font-style: italic;">Deca Sports</span> in one week, but the game seems to have lost some of its legs. <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/brawl-stage-of-the-week-metroid-revisited/">Smash Bros. Brawl</a> </span>also took a spill, falling from tenth place to nineteenth.<br /><br />The other noticeable drop was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/revolutionary-mario-kart-training-wheel/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart Wii</span></a>, which only fell one spot, but an important spot -- from first to second -- and finally succumbed to the <em>frightening</em> power of <span style="font-style: italic;">Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</span>. Hardware was also a PSP victory, as the handheld beat all other systems by a convincing margin.<br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/japanhardware_0523_cs.png" /><br /> Now that you've seen the hardware numbers, check past the break for the software sales.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-12-5-18/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/12-5/18</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-12-5-18/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/12-5/18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. The spotlight this week is on<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/more-screens-illuminate-luminous-arc-2/">Luminous Arc 2: Will</a></em>, a game that has yet to be confirmed for English language localization. While we're forced to sit and wait jealously, though, forty thousand Japanese gamers ran out and bought the title. Only falling behind the juggernauts <em>Monster Hunter</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/revolutionary-mario-kart-training-wheel/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> (and <span style="font-style: italic;">almost</span> squeezing past Nintendo's racer), Image Epoch's SRPG debuted pretty impressively.<br /><br />In other sales news, the announcement for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/professor-layton-and-the-last-time-travel-announced-for-japan/">another <span style="font-style: italic;">Professor Layton</span> game</a> in Japan managed to push <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/ds-fanboy-review-professor-layton-and-the-curious-village/">the first title</a> in the series back into the top thirty. Aside from that, there weren't any differences in DS software worth mentioning.<br /><br />In terms of hardware, the numbers for the DS weren't so hot. In fact, we don't remember the sales numbers for Nintendo's handheld <em>ever</em> being this low in Japan. With everyone and their mother already owning a DS in the country, does the system still have room for growth? We won't know for sure until the next big software push, but for now it looks like the dual-screened handheld should get comfy in that third place spot.<br />

<br />There's no new DS software in the top of the charts to report this week, but that doesn't mean Nintendo's little handheld didn't completely clean house. In fact, nineteen of the top thirty were DS games, showing how gluttonous the dual-screened portable can get when it comes to sales. Some old favorites also popped back up around the bottom, including <span style="font-style: italic;">Brain Age 2</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Animal Crossing</span>, and the original <span style="font-style: italic;">Taiko Drum Master DS</span>.<br /><br />Hardware continues to be a struggle, though. That doesn't mean the DS is doing poorly, because it's not; sales for the handheld even jumped up almost 10,000 units since last week. However, since the PSP and Wii have been doing so well lately, it's hard for Nintendo's handheld to compete:<br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">PSP:</span> 89,884</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Wii:</span> 67,308</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Nintendo DS:</span> 51,228</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">PlayStation 3:</span> 8,054</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">PlayStation 2:</span> 7,464</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Xbox 360:</span> 1,298</li>
</ul>
We have no doubt that the DS will be on top again soon enough, but until then, you can check out the satisfactory software numbers posted after the break.<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-5-5-11/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/5-5/11</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-5-5-11/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/5-5/11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. The gap between Wii and PSP sales is slowly but surely decreasing, making us wonder if the Wii might be able to overtake Sony's handheld once the <span style="font-style: italic;">Monster Hunter</span> hype dies down: <br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">PSP:</span> 89,884</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Wii:</span> 67,308</li>
    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Nintendo DS:</span> 51,228 <br /></li>

    <li><span style="font-weight: bold;">Xbox 360:</span> 1,298</li>
</ul>
Yet, the true triumph for the Wii last week was in software. Nintendo scored big all-around, but the Wii claimed six of the top ten spots in the chart. Keep in mind, though, that all the Wii games that made it to the top thirty are first-party titles, with the exception of <span style="font-style: italic;">Deca Sports</span>.<br /><br />In other news, <span style="font-style: italic;">Smash Bros. Brawl</span> managed to hop up five spots, showing us that it won't be disappearing any time soon. Meanwhile, <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Kart</span> is inching nearer to <span style="font-style: italic;">Brawl's</span> total sales, making it a close race between the two games. To see how they're currently fairing against each other, just click past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-5-5-11/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/5-5/11</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-5-5-5-11/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 5/5-5/11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. Ah, remember <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/21/metareview-links-crossbow-training/"><em>Link's Crossbow Training</em></a>? The game that was bundled with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zapper">Wii Zapper</a> last November (December, for PALs)? It was only released in Japan <em>last week</em>. If sales are any indication, though, Japanese gamers were clamoring for the <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">goron-junk shooter</span> rail shooter, as it claimed the third place spot.<br /><br />Even so, Link had to hail to the king (baby), as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/wii-fanboy-review-mario-kart-wii/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> still dominated the charts. The other big news for <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>? It passed one million sales in the Far East, denoting its success. Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/wii-fanboy-hands-on-deca-sports/"><em>Deca Sport</em>s</a> clamored back into the top ten, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><span style="font-style: italic;">Brawl</span></a> only slipped further downward, thus answering our question <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-21-4-27/">from last week</a>. Also proving that the Japanese love their sports games for the Wii, Bandai Namco's <span style="font-style: italic;">Pro Baseball Family Stadium</span> debuted at spot twenty.<br /><br />The Wii triumphed in hardware last week as well. While the console continues to trail behind Sony's handheld, Wii sales went up almost 30,000 units from last week -- perhaps from the <span style="font-style: italic;">Link's Crossbow</span> boost. Go on and check things out for yourself after the break, if you feel so inclined.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-28-5-4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/28-5/4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-28-5-4/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/28-5/4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. With our reasoning, a new <span style="font-style: italic;">Gundam</span> game + the popularity of the DS = cha-ching. While the debuting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/emblem-of-gundam/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Emblem of Gundam</span></a> had decent sales for its first week, though, taking the twelfth spot isn't all that impressive -- especially since there was only one new release cluttering up the top ten. <br /><br />On the other hand, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/we-are-first-impressions/"><span style="font-style: italic;">We're Fossil Diggers</span></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon-ranger/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Pokemon Ranger</span></a>, and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/fill-your-cuteness-quota-with-this-taiko-drum-master-2-ds-traile/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Taiko Drum Master DS</span> sequel</a> continued to shine, giving the DS a nice piece of top ten representation. <span style="font-style: italic;">Batonnage</span> managed to reach the half-million mark, while the other two games neared 100,000 copies sold.<br /><br />For hardware, DS numbers went up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-28-5-4/">since last week</a>, but the handheld is still convincingly behind the PSP and Wii in recent sales. Because a bunch of new games came out last week, <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-sports"><span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span></a>, <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/deca-sports"><span style="font-style: italic;">Deca Sports</span></a>, and <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><span style="font-style: italic;">Super Smash Bros. We know that <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span> will return to top ten fame soon enough, since <span style="font-style: italic;">it always does</span>, but we'll be interested to see whether the other two titles can pull that off as well.<br /><br />On the hardware side of things, the Wii got sandwiched by the two portables as it jumped up into second place:<br />

It looks like just the same old stuff for Wii sales in Japan last week. Wait a minute -- what's that, you say? <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-kart">Mario Kart Wii</a></em> dominated Japan? Sure enough, sitting pretty at the top of the charts is Nintendo's famous kart racer, with almost half a million copies sold in its first week.<br /><br />Despite the <em>Mario Kart</em> bump, the Wii only took third place in hardware. Considering that Japanese gamers love them some handhelds, though, that's not too much of a surprise. One little observation that may floor you, on the other hand, is that <span style="font-style: italic;">Brawl</span> was already overtaken by <span style="font-style: italic;">Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</span> in total sales.<br /><br />See it to believe it after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-7-4-13/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/7-4/13</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-7-4-13/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/7-4/13</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. In case that title doesn't ring a bell, you may know it better as "that butt-biting bug game." If there's one thing we've learned from this bug, it's that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAQez5q2oP8">biting is serious business</a>. Despite Japan's love for DS software and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/12/taiko-drum-master-ships-500k/">quirky rhythm games</a>, though, <span style="font-style: italic;">Oshiri Kajiri Mush</span><em>i</em> only debuted in the eighteenth spot. Perhaps butt biting is even too weird for Japan?<br /><br />In hardware, the DS fell behind the PSP once again. Yet, there's already signs of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Monster Hunter</span> hype beginning to dwindle, as the PSP sold 35,000 less units than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-3-31-4-6/">the week before</a>. Will the new <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/04/17/shh-its-the-brown-psp/">brown model</a> that comes out next week help the PSP keep a wide lead, or will the gap start to narrow again between the two handhelds? We're looking forward to finding out!<br /><br />To see the Japanese placings and numbers, just check after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-7-4-13/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/7-4/13</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/another-week-in-japan-hardware-and-software-numbers-4-7-4-13/">Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 4/7-4/13</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 17:00:00 EST. The DS had fifteen games to represent it, but even if you added up the sales numbers for all those games, the total wouldn't come close to what <span style="font-style: italic;">Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G</span> sold in its second week.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon-ranger-batonnage/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Pokemon Ranger: Batonnage</span></a> was once again the best-selling DS game, but newcomer <span style="font-style: italic;">Tottado! Yowiko's Deserted</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Island Life</span> (which is about famous Japanese comedians being stranded on an island) did well, also.
