This Wednesday: Commando 3 and Frogger 2 hop onto XBLA

Xbox Live Arcade, ever the service to indulge the inner omni-directional shooter fan we all obviously have, is getting another dose of run-one-direction-while-shooting-in-another this week – with an extra-special added bonus. Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (800 MS points) is just one of several Capcom retro resurrections hitting Live this year and provides a highly stylized new take (with three-player coop) on the arcade classics Commando and Mercs. Of course, that added bonus we spoke of is a "golden ticket" into the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta, which will be available for download on June 25 to anyone who purchases Commando 3. Is that a deal anyone can pass up, Ryu? "Sho-you-can't!"

Wolves (or shooting) not your thing? Voltex (the developer, not a Ukranian pop star) has you covered in ah-dorable little frogs this week with Frogger 2 (800 MS points). This spiritual successor to the coin-op classic (also available on XBLA) features new levels, new artwork, and what no XBL game can be without: a co-op mode (for up to four players, in this case). This release should at least make the parents of young'ns hoppy.

Commando 3 blasts onto XBLA next week, SSFIITHDR beta invite tags along

Capcom's Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 will charge onto Xbox Live Arcade next Wednesday. The game released yesterday on the North American PSN; however, the XBLA version, at 800 MS points ($10), will include an invite to the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta.

Commando 3 is a top-down shooter in the vein of classics like Smash TV. There's still no word of a release date for the game on the European PSN.

PSN Thursday: Novastrike, Civ Rev demo, Commando 3, much more

Big fat update this week. For starters, it's time for PS3 owners to jump in the pool and try out the Civilization Revolution demo. So far, our thoughts are positive, but conflicted. PC Civilization players will jump right in and notice some major changes, but will console gamers find joy in the methodical (yet incredibly streamlined) Civ gameplay?

Enough thinking, what about some twitch action? The free God of War theme for GH III is available today, along with the PSN's first game self-published by a developer, Novastrike. Also, storming out of left field is Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. There's also a couple other nice additions in this week's update, so check it out after the break.

The PS3 Fanboy's got your European PSN update on their site, but be sure to bring chocolates. They like chocolates.

Doom, Assault Heroes become $5 XBLA Hits

Perhaps, like us, you occasionally feel the urge to parade through the neighborhood, toting nothing but an impossibly huge rocket launcher and a desire to vaporize anything that, well, isn't you. And perhaps, like us, you realize (before it's too late) that these impractical desires are best expressed in video games such as Sierra Online's Assault Heroes or id Software's iconic Doom. It's certainly a lot cheaper.

In fact, the two aforementioned games will be added to Xbox Live's Arcade Hits program this Wednesday, March 19th, resulting in a 50% discount to 400 MS Points ($5) each. As Microsoft is keen to point out in the same press release, your determined point pinching may just come in handy for a lineup of new titles due to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade "in the near future:"

Joystiq hands-on: Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (XBLA/PSN)

Call it another old-school remake/update; Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 will be out on XBLA and PSN this Spring. The angled, overhead shooter draws on its MERCS origins, bringing three-player destruction to those systems for $10 or 800 Microsoft Points.

At a recent demo, I played the 360 version of the game. Controls felt good, with walking assigned to the left stick and shooting to the right. I lobbed grenades and launched super attacks with other buttons; the arsenal held my interest. Vehicles should be a big part of the game, too. In my demo, we drove in an armored truck, shooting from our different seats, and floated down a river raft. Hopefully the full game will feature lots of these breaks, since on-foot battles could grow monotonous.

Street Fighter II HD beta bundled with Commando 3

It seems Capcom will be pulling a Crackdown with its upcoming XBLA and PSN game, Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. According to Gamespot, the latest entry in the top-down shooter series will grant access to an Xbox Live beta of redone and redrawn brawler, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. Upon purchasing the game for 800 MS Points ($10), Gold members will be offered an access key for the fighter's stress test. It's expected to become playable shortly after Commando's release and should last approximately eight weeks.

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is due to arrive sometime in Spring.
