Serious Sam 3: Before First Encounter is getting serious on Xbox Live Arcade next week, launching on October 17 for 1200 MSP. Devolver Digital also announced that the "Jewel of the Nile" DLC arrives on the same day, just a day after it debuts on Steam.

The DLC includes three new campaigns along with some new weaponry. It's available with the Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Lat Team Standing and My Burden multiplayer versus modes for 1200 MSP too.

Devolver Digital revealed the above trailer to commemorate the announcement. It features the Rich Knuckles character from previous BFE commercials holding down his new mobile helpline, and includes an interesting soundbite from a certain CEO.

Jewel of the Nile features three campaign missions that take place during the middle of the single-player story, transporting Sam and his tight white t-shirt to the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae.

All three missions will be playable alone and in co-op, and feature a few new weapons for an asking price of $9.99. Sam will even encounter "a monstrous temple guardian" boss and probably a bunch of other screaming monsters, because that's what happens in Sam's world. He'll even have to fight an Aludran Reptiloid but you probably already knew that because you saw the screen above. Look how perceptive you are!

Serious Sam 3: BFE is currently in development for Linux and should launch sometime this year - the Linux version will launch with all content "up to date" with the PC and Mac versions.

The Linux version of Serious Sam 3: BFE will feature full Steamworks integration, including achievements and "the whole shebang," developer Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker says. Look for it to debut on Steam sometime this year.

In addition to the DLC, all Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter's multiplayer modes - which include both co-operative and competitive-based modes - will be free for all through Steam on May 15. All you have to do is download the free, standalone multiplayer on or after May 15 and you're good to go.

Software piracy is illegal and unfair to the people who make and sell games. That's enough of a deterrent for most people. The rest may find the giant, invincible, super-fast, assault-rifle-wielding scorpion monster more convincing.

That's the new DRM measure enacted by Serious Sam 3: BFE developer Croteam. We see the potential for this to become an industry-standard method of preventing unauthorized game copying. Or, in simpler terms, if that scary-ass monster wants to go into other games, we are powerless to stop it.

It's right there in the name: despite all temptations and probable pleading from the marketing department, it didn't come out as "Shoot Many Monsters." That's exactly what you do, over and over again, but the important thing is how you do it.

Be careful what you call mindless. Serious Sam 3: BFE lacks the long-term mental overhead of equipment upgrades and character augmentation, and the only emergent gameplay is something slimy crawling out of a cocoon, but it does know how to commandeer concentration -- ruthlessly. You're so plugged in from moment to moment, fingers flitting over the keyboard as you sprint, dodge and shuffle weapons in an onslaught of snorting beasts, it's a lie to think you haven't thought. So involving is the instinctive, mechanical game that context becomes a luxury.

Serious Sam: The Random Encounter is a turn-based RPG in a 16-bit style, part of the Serious Sam Indie Series of games. The two previous Indie Series efforts were Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack and Serious Sam Double D.

The time will be spent polishing the game, which was originally expected to launch October 18.

"The game is playing wonderfully and looks great, so we are going through to balance the difficulty and fine tune the code to eliminate any technical issues at launch," said Davor Hunski, Chief Creative at Croteam.

The game is currently available for pre-order on Steam and other digital distribution systems for 10 percent off. On Steam, there's an additional 10 percent off if you already own a previous Serious Sam title. There's also the "timed exclusive" of Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker as a multiplayer avatar for use in Serious Sam 3: BFE -- meaning you'll be able to shoot him over and over again for making you wait an extra month. Revenge!

I've never played any of the Serious Sam games, so I approached Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack without the benefit of context. So, to me, this iPhone game is about a heroic, headless man in boxing gloves who runs and kicks missiles until he can tackle a guy in a white t-shirt, at which point he explodes.

I'm having a hard time believing that this makes sense to other people.

Despite the total insanity of the premise ... OK, because of it ... I'm really enjoying this game. As a Headless Kamikaze enemy, you auto-run through short levels, jumping over and kicking obstacles like cacti, frogs, missiles, and bouncing bombs. As you progress through the level, you run with increasing speed, unless you pick up a slow-down item. The goal is to tackle and blow up Sam at the end of the level, who is running away from you.

However, that goal isn't really the goal. Each stage has a "bonus objective" usually involving destroying a specified number of a certain obstacle -- "kick 15 frogs" -- before you reach Sam. In these cases, you may actually want to delay reaching the end of the stage.

It's kind of neat to break what feels like a "run forever" Canabalt-style game into discrete, short levels. Well, it's either neat or entirely missing the point, but I happen to like the change of pace. I also like the cold shock of being dropped into this world. Are all the Serious Sam games this weird?

Why be independent rather than try to work for someone else?

Been there, done that. Bosses aren't for me, unless it's a boss battle. Being independent puts me in control of the whole development process so I can set my own schedules and create what I want to create. Sometimes I have flashbacks of working overtime for my old employers and I want to scream "FREEEDOOOOOOOOM!!!" like William Wallace did at the end of Braveheart, but then I snap out of it and realize where I'm at and am thankful I'm doing my own thing.

The developer has announced that the game will indeed allow for up to four players to play on the same screen, with the help of a keyboard and mouse and up to three gamepads.

All of the versus and co-op modes will allow for splitscreen play, so just like old times, you'll be able to see what your friends are up to, helping or hampering them as you will. Check the screens below to see what this chaos looks like.

We're pretty sure Croteam is just joking, but the outcome is that it's having a contest for secret graffiti in Serious Sam 3: BFE, asking fans to submit some quick quips that will actually be posted in the game's environments, coded in Arabic and hieroglyphics.

You need to submit lines, either through Facebook or Twitter, by July 29, and the team's favorite lines will actually show up in the game. We were going to suggest the old standby "Kilroy was here," but someone on the Facebook page already posted that one, so we're out. Good luck to everyone else who enters!

These new screens of Serious Sam: The Random Encounter reveal a game with both exploration and combat delivered in a 16-bit Final Fantasy-style.

Of course, because it's a Serious Sam game, it's a Final Fantasy-style RPG populated by impossibly beefy dudes with big arms, bigger sidearms, and giant, grotesque robotic alien things.

You won't find him giving Yoga a whirl and you probably won't find him taking a leap on a VitaBoost passion-mango smoothie or whatever. And it shows in Serious Sam 3: BFE -- a case where minimal change actually ends up being a good thing.

I was able to check out two different levels here at E3: the first level, a tutorial stage set in the streets of Cairo that eases you into the action, and a later, more traditional Serious Sam stage set amongst some ruins in a desert.

But this time, the outsourcing is seriously appealing. Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital have announced the Serious Sam Indie Series, in which known indie developers remake Croteam's famous shooter in their own styles.

The first three devs to take on this Serious task are Mommy's Best Games, Vlambeer, and Be-Rad Entertainment. Mommy's Best is doing what it does best, a "frantic side-scrolling shooter" for PC and consoles called Serious Sam: Double-D. Super Crate Box creator Vlambeer mashes up genres to create the turn-based RPG Serious Sam: The Random Encounter for unspecified platforms, and Lame Castle's Be-Rad Entertainment interprets the series as an auto-running game about guiding Headless Kamikazes out of the path of Sam, called Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack!

Platform specifics about Random Encounter and Kamikaze Attack have yet to be revealed, though Kamikaze Attack sounds like a candidate for a mobile release. If you're at PAX East this weekend, you can find out for yourself -- Double D and Kamikaze Attack will be playable at booth I-16.

If there's one flaw to this plan, it's that these indie games sound way more interesting than the actual Serious Sam sequel they're intended to promote.

In a wildly amusing press release (after the break), the studio revealed some of the game's key features, including its lush Egyptian setting and 16-player "full campaign" co-op. (We wonder if it'll have 16 player split-screen support? We've always wanted to truly utilize our 256-inch monitor.)

Serious Sam 3: BFE (the acronym won't be spelled out) is scheduled for release on PC and "game consoles" this summer. Check out the new screens below for more insight into its arcadey action!

It's a new enemy in Serious Sam 3: BFE, as revealed on the game's Facebook page, and it's the subject of the first released screenshot (above; high-res version in the gallery below).

Perhaps the big clue -- which may lead us to the meaning of the game's "BFE" subtitle -- is a modern-looking sign with Arabic script. Update: Egypt it is!

No other details were offered, though Ribaric referred to the game as Serious Sam: BFE -- "Beyond First Encounter" or "Before First Encounter," perhaps? We've reached out to Croteam for clarification.

Ribaric promises more details soon and we'll be sure to pass along any info as it's made known. Because that's how this relationship works.

Fan site Seriously! supposedly got the scoop from Devolver Digital, publisher of HD remakes Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, about Serious Sam HD: Gold Edition -- a bundle which includes both remakes, as well as both original games. That can't be good for the original games' self-esteem, being bundled with sleeker, more attractive-looking versions. Have you no heart, Devolver Digital?

According to Seriously!, Steam users will be able to download Gold Edition on Thursday for $39.99s. We've followed up with Devolver Digital for confirmation and will let you know what we hear back.

Finally, fans left hanging at the conclusion of Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter can get a bit of closure on September 22, as Majesco has confirmed the launch date for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. If there's anything that these games are known for, it's their rich narrative and character development, so to leave us hanging like that is criminal. All jokes aside, we could all probably use a bit more of "shoot everybody and don't die" in our lives. Keeps you feeling young, you know?

Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter adds three new weapons -- the Sniper Rifle, Flamethrower and Chainsaw -- and co-op support for up to four players across 12 maps, including team-based and competitive modes. No price has been announced for The Second Encounter, though we suspect pricing will be in line with the first game: 1200 MS Points ($15).
