It's time for Namco Bandai to bring out the katamari and roll up some loose change, as profits dipped 63% from the same quarter last year. GI.biz reports the company went from making $26 million in profit during Q108 to making only $9.2 million in Q109. The video game section of the company was the only division to see growth at 3.8% this quarter.

Much of Namco's sales this period came from Europe and Asia, with Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 selling 420,000 units in the former territory. Japan brought sales with Taiko Drum Master and Tales of Symphonia at 260,000 and 215,000 units, respectively. The company expects sales to pick up over the year, but has already forecast a 31% drop in profits for the full year. Hey, at least they're just making less profit and not sending cash into the ether like Midway.
Namco Bandai profits take a dip in Q109 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Aug 2008 11:00:00 EST. This time, we take a look at Dragonball Z: Burst Limit. The long and short of it that Burst Limit is pretty decent fighting game, and one that Dragonball Z fans will probably enjoy quite a bit. Our scouters are reading power levels well above 9,000 and growing. The more we see of this game, the more we want it. Luckily for us, this English trailer might be a good indicator that a western release for Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit may be coming sooner than we think. If you're a big fan of DBZ, you'll want to check out this trailer -- watch it to the very end to see what Vegeta thinks of the game. Still no sign of permanent destructible environments though, but hey, you can't win them all.

[Via N4G]
English DBZ: Burst Limit trailer is over 9000 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 08:00:00 EST. Atari has hooked us up and, by hooking us up, hooked you up. That's a whole lot of hooking (keep your mind out of the gutter!) right there. They've unloaded, literally, a box full of games onto us. It's not like we can keep them, so we're going to give them away to you!

As usual, you must be 18 years of age or older to enter and a legal resident of the 50 United States or Canada (excluding Quebec). How do you enter, you ask? Well, just tell us what your favorite Atari game of all time is. Pretty simple, eh? We like to keep it simple.

The prizes up for grabs:

2 Grand prize winners: 1 copy of Godzilla Unleashed ($40), 1 copy of DBZ Budokai 2 ($30), 1 copy of DBZ Budokai 3 ($40) and 1 copy of My Horse and Me ($30)

2 Runner-up winners: 1 copy of Godzilla Unleashed ($40), 1 copy of My Horse and Me and 1 copy of DBZ Budokai 3 ($40)

1 consolation winner: 1 copy of Godzilla Unleashed ($40) and 1 copy of My Horse and Me ($30)

You can enter only once per day and should you leave more than one comment in this post during a one-day period, you'll find yourself disqualified. Also, if you leave a comment that isn't on the topic of what we asked, you will be disqualified. And make sure you check your email regularly. If we send you an email saying you won and we don't hear back from you, we have to award the prize to someone else. The contest will end Sunday, March 23rd at 11:59PM ET. We'll select the winners via random drawing the next day.

For a full and very complete list of rules, click here. Best of luck to you all and thanks to Atari for the giveaway goodies!
Wii Fanswag: Win some games from Atari originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:15:00 EST. While the Wii version of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is officially the first Dragon Ball game to feature online play, let's not kid ourselves. The Wii isn't exactly known as a major hub for online gaming. However, it appears that developer Namco Bandai is fixing that despicable oversight when Atari recently announced that the next game in the franchise - Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit will ship later this year with a full online mode on the PS3.

Atari didn't say too much beyond that, but it promised "radical 3D graphic effects," which we've witnessed, and we have to agree. This looks closer to playing the actual cartoon than we've ever seen before, and we can't wait to see more.
Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit will feature online play originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. Well, here it is. Burst Limit, coming to Xbox 360 and PS3, looks like no other DBZ game before it. We're sad to admit, but this Japanese debut trailer has us pretty excited. The PS2 games before it did a good job of recreating the world of Goku and the gang, but the high-fidelity visuals of this new effort really bring a whole new sheen to the franchise. We don't know how it's going to play, but it's certainly an admirable revival for a series that's now decades old.

Dragon Ball Z: what it looks like on PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Dec 2007 20:15:00 EST. There isn't much in the way of games you've probably been looking forward to this week, but, then again, there probably isn't going to be anything you've been dying to get until NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams releases. So, if some movie tie-ins are your thing, then you're in luck. Or, if you're a fan of Atari games.

The Golden Compass

Alvin & The Chipmunks

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Godzilla Unleashed

Jenga

Plan on picking any of these games up this week?
Wii releases for the week of December 3rd originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. See, now this is where it gets punishing. Kiss your poor wallet "Adios!" friends, because we're staring down the barrel of a really tough week. Sure, there's Super Mario Galaxy, and it's an easy choice for the featured pick (much like Baby, nobody puts the plumber in the corner). But he's also got an insane lineup of hot titles on his heels, including Crysis, Assassin's Creed, BlackSite: Area 51, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. And there's ... more. You can check out the full list after the break, you poor, soon-to-be-broke sap -- it may just be the last time you can do so before your computer gets repossessed.
Continue reading New games this week: Super Mario Galaxy edition

New games this week: Super Mario Galaxy edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 08:05:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced its 2007 holiday lineup for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Network and PlayStation Portable. The full list (posted after the break) contains every released and unreleased title the publisher expects to add to the cacophony of "Buy me!" screams echoing throughout the aisles this festive season.

Highlights includes the cringe-inducing PAIN, stealth saga Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus and Lara Croft gender bender, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for PS3. You'll also spot a burst of confidence regarding the timely arrival of one Unreal Tournament III, despite the fact that publisher Midway has written it off for 2007. Is Epic Games going to perform an unlikely Unreal miracle, or did someone miss the memo?
Continue reading Sony announces holiday lineup, still believes in Unreal Tournament 3

Sony announces holiday lineup, still believes in Unreal Tournament 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 14:02:00 EST. Nintendo would dare not let us forget that we bought our Wii to actually play games on it. Oh, no no no, in fact we're going to be up to our eyeballs in games within the next six months and Nintendo didn't hold back in letting us know. In fact, this list of upcoming games may be the longest list we've ever seen, dwarfing even Santa's very own.

So, stop wasting time and head past the break to look this ridiculously large list over.
Continue reading Nintendo lets us know there are still games coming

Nintendo lets us know there are still games coming originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Oct 2007 15:06:00 EST. Nintendo is eager to dispell that notion - or perhaps they simply feel bad about delaying Smash Bros. Brawl - but, regardless, they've released an enormous list of games coming to the Wii and DS platforms. Nintendo's George Harrison (is he still working there?) crowed, "Because of Wii and Nintendo DS momentum, third-party publishers are supporting our systems like never before." We don't know how much we'd brag about a history of poor third-party support but the list - conveniently contained after the break - shows off many of the releases planned through early 2008.

Notable inclusions: The long-rumored Assassin's Creed for Nintendo DS, the Japanese imports Flash Focus: Vision Training in Minutes a Day and Master of Illusion, and the soon-to-be-blockbuster Elf Bowling (Collector's Edition no less). So it's got 150 characters-- that's just 150 identical big-haired Akira Toriyama characters I can't tell apart.

That's how I'd feel if not for the online play. We're sort of starved for online multiplayer on the Wii, and the idea of an online fighting game is almost irresistable. I'm pretty sure I can put up with the Dragon Ball Z-ness in the interest of playing a fast-paced fighting game online.

How do you feel? Is the promise of wi-fi enough to sway you towards a game that you normally wouldn't care about? Or is, say, Pokémon with other people still just Pokémon?
Wii Warm Up: The online incentive originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 09:00:00 EST. I'm glad Wii-volution sent in this interview with Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 producer Ryo Mito. It'll tell you a lot more about the additions to this game over the last one than I can.

I played this at the Atari booth at PAX, and while I didn't exactly know what was going on, I was really enjoying the game. I don't know how it compares to any previous Budokai games, but the Wii controls were really easy to use and had me executing crazy combos and chaining teleports and beam attacks and big punches all over the place. The special move inputs require you to hold a button and then make a motion similar to the actual move (a diagram of the required movement appears at the bottom of the screen.) I played as Nail, and had to cross my arms in front of my chest to do ... I don't know, some big flashy thing. I really dislike Dragon Ball Z, and I had an awesome time playing the demo.

One thing even I can tell you is new to the series, and totally amazingly awesome: it's online. I asked the Atari rep twice to be sure. Online.
Wii-volution interviews DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 producer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. For those of you who love the DBZ franchise or Wi-Fi enabled games in general, Atari just dropped a gigantic mound of screenshots for Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. The screens are chock full of gameplay, showing off some new characters for the game. We'd describe what else we'd like from the newest game, but we aren't very familiar with the anime or manga, save from the knowledge that just about everyone has to have gigantic, spiky hair.
We got a press release in our inbox today, chock full of delicious concept art for the upcoming DragonBall Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3. While we'd like to have seen some images of the stages or other in-game stuff, we'll take concept art ... for now.

But, so help us if we don't get something more soon, you'll make the bunny cry. What kind of monster are you?
Even though the series started in Japan back in 1989, and ended in 1996, the tie-in games just keep on coming for Dragon Ball Z. Atari has announced Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for the Wii and PS2. Like the previous installment on Wii, this is part of the Dragon Ball Z Sparking series in Japan and is developed by Spike.

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will include improved Wii controls and over 150 playable characters, which is a lot of big-haired dudes and blonde versions of those same big-haired dudes. The stages will include day/night versions, which opens up a transformation ability for many characters. There's a teaser animation on the Japanese website, but no screens or anything yet.

Take this! Take this! My playthrough of the upcoming Dragon Ball Z game didn't really have sound, and maybe that was a good thing. No matter how fun the game may end up being, the repetitive voiceovers in this new gameplay video will certainly irritate anyone.
New York Comic Con had a great deal of games based on anime franchises. But, they were all on the DS. The one game that I had to play was the upcoming PSP Dragon Ball Z game. I got a chance to talk to some representatives from Atari and I had a blast. As you can see in the embedded video above, the graphics are quite smooth, and the presentation is quite sleek. The "Another Road" mode offers an original story for DBZ fans to appreciate. Load times? Minimal. The controls were incredibly accessible, creating for fast, fun battles.

The game looks to be quite ideal for on-the-go play. I wonder if it'll feature enough depth to satisfy hardcore gamers. Also, with my relative lack of inexperience with DBZ games, I have to admit, I'm not exactly sure how much Another Road expands upon the franchise. Can it feel fresh, considering how it's Atari's 26th DBZ game? We'll find more closer to its March 20th release.
NYCC: Hands-on with Dragon Ball Z originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 21:27:00 EST. Year after year, another fighter appears in the DBZ universe, and while they tend not to be awful, they're not all too memorable either. Shin Budokai: Another Road is the latest addition to the DBZ fighter genre, and if IGN's glowing preview is to be believed, it looks to be a heck of a lot better than the original Shin Budokai.

The controls appear to have been improved upon greatly, and the story mode should be a treat for DBZ fans: it's a "what if" storyline that chronicles an alternate path the story would've taken if Trunks had risen to power differently.

IGN also has some new videos of the game in action. Otaku can prepare to get their blond wigs out on March 20th.
Shin Budokai: Another Road might be the best DBZ yet originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Feb 2007 13:00:00 EST. With some brand new content, including 6 new characters and a new arena, will Aussie gamers even want to take part in this game, which received some fairly mediocre review scores. Where to begin? With a whopping total of 10 popular gaming platforms, one thing's for sure, you have choices. 145 to be exact. And even if you're not planning to buy a PS3 or Wii this week, existing systems are getting a ton of action. Weeks like this only happen once every five years. Enjoy it friends.

The day has come ladies and gentlemen. The list for the games that will be available on the Wii by December has arrived! Be warned that there have been a few modifications and we wouldn't be surprised to see more the closer we get to December. One of the games taken off is Blazing Angels. Judging from the list we can tell that many other games will make up for the gap.

We have divided the list by publisher to make it easier on your eyes. Check it out after the break!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Continue reading Wii titles available by December

Wii titles available by December originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Nov 2006 12:00:00 EST. We're not sure exactly which games may not make that November 19th launch date, but it seems reasonable to presume the VC games will be there on launch day, previously dated titles like Zelda, and the 530 GameCube titles they're eager to remind us will work from the get go.

Nintendo does remind us that "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess emerges [Ed. will emerge?] as this season's video game masterpiece." Hey, way to throw that third party trash to the curb! We agree it stands head and shoulders above some of the more forgettable entries filling up this list (we're sure Happy Feet will be a slightly less impressive masterpiece), but it's nice to see them being so candid about it. Check out the entire list after the break, and let us know if there's anything missing that we thought would be there. We'll start: Ubisoft's forgettable WWII dogfighter, Blazing Angels. It came out for the Xbox 360 in March, was confirmed by Ubisoft to be a launch window game in August, was again confirmed by Nintendo to be a launch title in September, and now it's evidently missing. What's up?
The last time a PSP title was this high in the Japanese software sales chart, it was SD Gundam G Generation Portable, and it was the fastest-selling PSP game to date. And now it's Gundam Battle Royale's turn at trying to upset Nintendo's DS games, which Andrew predicted more than a month ago. While Gundam Battle Royale's sold less than half of what SD Gundam G Generation Portable (155,634) sold in its first week, it was still enough to capture the fourth spot. It seems the Japanese eat up these Gundam games faster than my fat uncle Johnny at Thanksgiving.
The sales figures they present are very selective and they do not predict figures for every title, but we take what we can get. Their entire proposed lineup and sales figures, which we must say is not a confirmed list by Nintendo in any shape or form, is included after the break.
Continue reading Wedbush Morgan predicts Wii launch lineup and sales

Wedbush Morgan predicts Wii launch lineup and sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 15:50:00 EST. Oh no, apparently those eager to toss fireballs and teleport will have to actively perform these motions with the Wiimote.

Good news though, the controls are less frantic and demand less amounts of wild arm-flinging. So with a more refined control set, you're better able to control the in-game action. This new control scheme combines button-pressing with gesture-based gameplay. For example, to fly you'll press the C button to jump and hover, which will get your character off the ground. Once in the air, you can hold in the C button and move the controller up or down to increase or decrease altitude.
DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 gameplay explained originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 15:00:00 EST.
Alright, we admit it. Dragon Ball Z happens to be one of our favorite series. It's easy get caught up in 30 episodes where each one is a continuation of the same battle. And it is always worth it to see Goku slip in a famous Kamehameha.

Being fans of the games as well, we are always happy to see another DBZ fighter come out. Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 promises a lot with 130 playable characters and a new way of fighting using the Wiimote. Pressing buttons in this game will only get you so far. You must thrust, twist, turn, and "punch" the controller. We can hardly wait to be punching the hell out of some living room air to try and accomplish some of the best moves from DBZ.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is set to release November 22. As always, click continue to see the trailer.

We're fine with it though, because we have been given the information we've waited so long on (it's a small price to pay).
The section of the newly-opened Wii.com for the English-speaking crowd has gone live, as well as pages in French and Spanish. Nintendo has also opened up the sub-section of Nintendo.com dedicated to the Wii here. In this sub-section, a translation of some interviews with the Wii engineers and designers that Iwata conducted may be found. Finally, a good press release direct from Nintendo can be seen here.
Yet, despite the numerous genres represented (and in a few cases, completely made up), the dual-screened wonder lacks a proper fighting game. Well, that's only partially true: Japan scored a brilliant game in Jump Superstars, a battle royale between essentially every popular anime and manga character in the country. And it was import-friendly! However, despite the game's excellent Smash Bros-like battle system, the real fun came via ad-hoc multiplayer...and what were the chances of finding another American gamer with this thing?

Well, get excited, fighting fans. The most recent issue of Famitsu has confirmed a sequel, entitled Jump Ultimate Stars. There are a few new characters, a few new moves, the regular treatment...but this time, the game properly supports the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. Buried at the bottom of an IGN preview for the Wii's Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is the news that not only is this game not going to feature any online component, but every 3rd-party game that comes out for the Wii won't support anything online either. Not until 2007 will publishers be able to offer up Wi-Fi gaming to eager players who picked up a Wii.

Gamers hoping for an online component, however, are in for bad news, because one isn't planned. Activision would not say why, but IGN has separately learned from multiple development sources that Nintendo will not release Wii Wi-Fi Connection libraries to third parties until early 2007, which means that no third party launch title will have an online mode.

Well, that's pretty awful. Seems like a pretty dumb move not to allow your third-party developers to offer online play with your launch titles. Online gaming has arguably become essential for most players and considering your system isn't in high-def or truly next-gen graphics wise, what other incentive besides a different control scheme would a gamer have in picking up your product?

Check after the break for the possible launch titles that would certainly be affected by this.
Continue reading No online support for 3rd-party Wii devs until 2007

No online support for 3rd-party Wii devs until 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Aug 2006 09:55:00 EST. In going over the preview, they managed to pry loose tons of details about the game.

The game will take the sandbox approach (free-roaming story mode) and offer 50 hours of gameplay to complete the single-player story. The entirety of the game's content will follow the manga, anime, and many movies, featuring over 120 characters.

The game will allow fusion characters such as Gotenks and Vegito to join in on the action, along with a highly-customizable system for each character in the game. Customizing can be done on multiple levels, from cosmetic looks to combos, moves, and special powers. This is all done via an in-game money system allowing the player to purchase upgrades. All of the characters will have optional Japanese voiceovers and fight in interactive arenas twice the size of previous games. Also confirmed is that gamers will have a choice between using the Wiimote or plugging in their GameCube controller to play the game. Finally, the Wii version is to have enhanced graphics when compared to the PS2 game.
By way of the like-minded folks at Nwizard (see: they love Nintendo too!), we now have an updated list of the games that will be accompanying the Wii's launch later this year. Given all of increasing support the console is seeing, all the recent titles Ubisoft has said they're working on bringing to the Wii, as well as EA and Midway's support, we now have a list that combines the best from Nintendo with some excellent third-party titles.

A full list of launch titles are available after the break.
Nintendo gaming site Nwizard has put together a handy list of titles for Nintendo's Wii that are confirmed to be there at launch (whenever that is). So far, the total is set at 27, but of course that number can grow as time gets closer to the inevitable day the Wii comes to stores.

While there certainly looks to be a nice, varied list of games there at launch, there are also a few titles on the way that are worth waiting for -- Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are just a couple.

Check after the break for the full list.
Continue reading The confirmed Wii launch lineup

The confirmed Wii launch lineup originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Aug 2006 17:55:00 EST. This estimated release date is obviously for the Japanese gaming world and does not apply to us lowly gamers outside of the Mecca of gaming that the nation is, so we'll have to wait a tad bit longer.

No other information can be taken from the scan, other than the knowledge that someone apparently did not enjoy the figurines, choosing to angrily place a giant X across a majority of the scan. The magazine in which this scan comes from is also a mystery at this time.
New DBZ RPG coming to DS in December? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Aug 2006 10:00:00 EST.
