A million new players, which is how many have signed up since the MMO went free-to-play earlier this month. According to Sony Online Entertainment, the number of new signups is evenly split among the PC and PS3 versions of the game.

In short, it turns out that making your product free is a pretty big incentive for consumers. But asking them to stop by is different than having them stick around.

DC Universe Online's official Facebook account has teased the fifth update for the popular console and PC MMO, hinting at new features and new characters to play with. The "Fate of the Fortress" update will include a new difficulty mode for the Hive Alert zone (with new loot to match), a duel feature for fighting friends, the ability to fight in the Batcave as yourself (rather than as the premade Iconic characters), and appearances from both Jor-El, Superman's dad, and the evil General Zod. We're not sure how that last one will be used, but best guess is that you'll have to /kneel before him.

That's just a little MMO humor for you there (very little). DCUO is scheduled to go free-to-play by the end of this month, and so presumably the update will drop sometime right around then. In fact, the official account comments on the Facebook page that "Update 5 is soon, F2P is Late October," so we may even see this new content out sooner than the changeover.

Previously hailed as "Super-Servers," MegaServers will give players the ability to switch between PvP and PvE styles of gameplay, and hopefully, new people to actually play with. The merge will begin for EU servers on Monday morning, with US servers following on Tuesday and Wednesday. As is the way with these things, some players will be forced to change their names after the merge, as two characters cannot exist with the same name on the same server. Sony Online Entertainment has decided upon this summer to rectify that missing power set, with the first DCUO DLC, "Fight for the Light." In addition to about a million player-created Lantern types, Hal Jordan and other Green Lantern characters will appear in the $10 DLC. Three new scenarios will also bring players to S.T.A.R. Labs, Hal Jordan's home of Coast City, and the "Sciencells Prison" on the planet of Oa.

SOE confirmed Blakely's departure in a statement, thanking him for "the passion and leadership he brought to work every day," and noting that the company "fully supports him in his future endeavors." Zynga could not be reached for comment as of publishing, though it stands to reason that the social media giant isn't exactly unhappy with the acquisition. Executive director of development, Lorin Jameson, will fill Blakely's spot at SOE.

It can't actually get the data back, of course (that's not how it works), but SOE says it will do its best to make it up to customers with free stuff, as announced on its blog today.

All SOE players will get 30 days of free game time in every game they're subscribed to, in addition to extra play time for every day the servers are down (they've been down since May 2 already). There are also plenty of rewards lined up per game, including special gear and items in DC Universe Online and Star Wars Galaxies plus some special Double XP events in Everquest and Vanguard.

Lifetime subscribers will get another load of in-game currency in addition to all of the other rewards, and Station Access subscribers will get an extra 500 Station Cash. And don't forget about Sony's plan to also offer affected users free identity protection for a year through Debix.

The DCUO operator expects to begin testing "new technology to meld all of our US and European PC and PS3 servers into four Super-Servers" this month, according to a news post on the official game site.

The so-called Super-Servers would be divided into two per region, with the US and Europe each hosting a PC and PS3 server and continuing to segregate the platform communities. "This will allow for more opportunities to queue and participate in other group related game mechanics," SOE explained, without clarifying whether the move would actually reduce the number of servers or instead initiate cross-server queuing to cut down on wait times. The "melding" has also raised questions about how SOE would keep PvP and PvE players separated. "We'll have more details at a future date," said the company.

While Sony Online Entertainment had assured its customers last week that, "to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons" during last month's breach into Sony's systems, the MMO division today suspended its games and services, including its websites and Facebook titles.

"We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily," the group said in a brief statement this morning. "In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately."

SOE added that it would provide an update later today. In the meantime, the notification page suggests you download and play some (offline) casual games to distract you from that horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Update: SOE has announced that it has lost 12,700 customer credit card numbers as the result of an attack, and roughly 24.6 million accounts may have been breached. Check out our follow-up post for more information.

SOE reps took to Sony's forums to clear the air, saying, "We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons."

The post also acknowledges a "continuing investigation" currently taking place at SOE, and notes that the company will "promptly notify" customers of any change in the situation. SOE's games -- including Free Realms and DC Universe Online -- temporarily went offline on April 21 and have since had service restored. An SOE rep states that "SOE's systems and databases are separate from PSN's," thus explaining how the company's games are still working -- and how your information wasn't stolen.

Meanwhile, as reported by our sister site Massively, SOE is working on a "make good plan" for Free Realms and DCUO players on the PlayStation 3, as well as holding a handful of in-game events across multiple games in the coming weeks.

Sony is also streamlining the social UI quite a bit, answering players' wishes for an easier-to-use chat system.

More bugfixes are incoming, including fixes to issues around voice chat and grouping. In future content, Sony's Chris Cao says that The Penguin is going to get his due, as well as the Flash and some of his associated heroes. It all sounds fun -- SOE promised to push updates quickly on this one, and this free content is its first delivery.

At least, you shouldn't trade it in, even if you find a store who will accept it, or you risk being a super-jerk. Sony Online Entertainment confirmed to Lazygamer that the serial key included with retail copies of the game is a one-time-use thing, and each disc only includes access for one account. That means that the first person to use a copy of DCUO is the only person who can use that copy.

This kind of restriction isn't exactly new to consoles, with trade-ins of every iteration of Phantasy Star Online refused by retailers due to the unique codes tied to each disc. But it's not common -- mostly because MMO-type games on consoles are so uncommon.

Dubbed the "DC Universe Online Legend Plan," the promo offers 25 percent off the standard three-month rate of $42 and will allow players to continue paying that rate once the initial quarter-year subscription expires. The promotion ends on March 1, so get in while the getting's good!

Sony Online Entertainment has included every facet of the now traditional World of Warcraft-style MMO, including skill trees, loot and instances, raids and open-world PvP (and soon, an Auction House). The developer has even shoehorned it all into a console-style interface, transferring a whole mouse and keyboard of functions and abilities into basically four buttons, two toggles and a set of detailed menus.

But as an experience, DCUO (as it's been labeled in the acronym-loving MMO community) is more Aquaman than Superman. The game is buggy, and even with sizable updates already released and more on the way, I've still experienced multiple freezes, almost constant sound issues, terrible menu lag, and lots and lots of UI and gameplay frustrations. DCUO is a respectable MMO, but the console version is far from being an ideal way to play it.

Smedley also tweeted that the MMO has had to add servers, and SOE is currently working out supply chain issues. We previously reported DCUO topping the UK sales chart (though it has dropped significantly since then).

Speaking with Joystiq, Smedley elaborated on the game's current sales split between console and PC: "We're at 52 percent PS3, 48 percent PC." He explained that if NPD data ends up showing the PS3 version outperforming PC, it's because the tracking service doesn't have access to the Steam sales, which he tells us have been very strong since launch.

Players can either align with good or evil and battle alongside the likes of Joker, Batman, Superman, and Lex Luthor -- a full list of the battles can be found after the break.

We'd suggest hopping on the PC version around 5PM PST and joining up with Future Batman (as piloted by famed comic artist Jim Lee) to take down evil, or if you're feeling more edgy, the PS3 version around 7PM PST to join Lee as Future Joker in creating chaos. If you miss the whole event, well, the game officially launches next week, so no biggie. That said, if you're really sore about missing it, the full play-by-play will be broadcast via DCUO's Facebook page. "Like" away!

Sony Online Entertainment confirmed the dates in an interview with IGN, also announcing the game's $199 lifetime subscription price (a bit over 13 months worth of sub. fees), as well as it's main pricing structure: $49.99 on PC / $59.99 on PS3 with one month subscription, $14.99 for subsequent months.

"We're going to be here for far more than a single year. We've got a lot of universe to build, and we're not going to stop anytime soon," game director Chris Cao said of the lifetime subscription pricing. Cao also detailed an end-of-the-world event that will take place within DCUO before it launches in January. "Jim Lee and our friends at DC are going to join us in a live, end-of-beta event where players will fight alongside and against the iconics as Brainiac's menace yet looms," he explained, adding, "It will be an epic end and thank you for beta. And it will set the stage for the real struggle to come in live."

Another struggle to come alongside the game's launch? How to get players to choose another mentor -- as expected, Superman was the favorite "by far." Of course, we'll be bucking the trend with a super villain mimicking hip-hop personality MF Doom. Too obvious?

Developer Sony Online Entertainment also has to feature the DC pantheon of heroes and villains, while simultaneously making room in the DC Universe for millions of new heroes and villains -- and it has to let people build their own unique mixture of powers without sacrificing game balance or allowing everyone to be Superman.

Of course, judging from history (hello, True Fantasy Live Online) just releasing an MMO on consoles is enough of a challenge. SOE Creative Director Chris Cao told Joystiq that this was one of the major reasons for the recent delay of DCUO from this month into early 2011. "An MMO is already a complex thing to launch," he said, "let alone on two platforms, with two kinds of audiences, and so we've been running closed beta and internal beta for a long time, most of this year." As the team found more to work on through these betas, they asked for, and received, permission to delay the game.

Authentic voices too: For instance, Arleen Sorkin will reprise her role of Harley Quinn from Batman: The Animated Series, while super prolific voice actor Corey Burton will provide the pipes for Brainiac.

Dwight Schultz, of The A-Team and Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, will add another notch to his voiceover belt by speaking for The Flash. Rounding out the list of actors is Wil Wheaton, who recently voiced the Blue Beetle in Batman: The Brave and the Bold -- though, this time around, he'll be doing vox for Robin, who is sometimes called Boy Wonder, but never to his face.

Sony Online Entertainment announced a delay of DC Universe Online, from its announced November 2 release date until "early 2011." Or, in comic book terms, SOE rebooted the universe, creating a reality where the game was always going to be released in early 2011. "As the game heads into external beta testing, this extra time will allow us to address community feedback in a meaningful way," SOE president John Smedley said. "When we get deeper into external beta, we'll be able to share more information regarding the new launch date."

There's sort of good news if you still want to spend your November (or at least part of it) playing DCUO. If you've already pre-ordered, or if you do so before November 15, you'll be "assured access to the beta by November 30 (North America only)." If you miss that deadline, you'll get access a week before launch, and you'll get to take part in the "Battle of the Legends" event at the end of beta, along with the other people who will have had months to get way, way better than you.

Still, the game continues to generate interest, if only because Sony Online Entertainment is bringing it to the PS3, and many gamers have been waiting for a new console MMO, polished or otherwise, for a long time.

Last week at Comic-Con, SOE showed off the latest build of DCU and spotlighted a new feature with the awkward name "Play as Iconic." ("Iconic" is what the licensed DC comics characters are referred to as in the game.) In the main game, you will play as your own custom characters, getting guidance and help from established veterans like Batman and Superman. But, as you've probably deduced, in the Play as Iconic bonus mode, you'll get to play as DC heroes (or villains) in a 2-on-2 PvP match.

Yesterday's DC Universe Online-centric Comic-Con panel included a whole cornucopia of surprises for attendees (and potential subscribers). For instance, TV and film star Mark Hamill was there, talking about his role as the nefarious, wide-grinned Joker. Also, everyone in the audience got beta keys, which seemed to please them to no end. Also, it was announced the game wouldn't require a PSN+ subscription to play on the PS3 on top of the standard MMO subscription fee, which was also met with rousing applause.

The biggest surprise came from comic writer Jim Lee, who announced that the game would drop on November 2. Sure, we knew it would come at some point during the 11th month, but not two days into it. Why, that's practically late October, if you really think about it.

Who would have thought that one of the strongest voice cast lineups we've seen in a good, long time would come from an MMORPG? Check out some of the talent Sony Online Entertainment managed to wrangle for its upcoming superpowered outing, DC Universe Online:
  • Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy will reprise their frequent roles of The Joker and Batman, respectively. You may remember the sounds of their pipes from Arkham Asylum, as well as any other animated Batman project from the past 15 years.
  • Former Firefly stars Gina Torres and Adam Baldwin will voice Wonder Woman and Superman, respectively. Though you probably didn't need that "respectively" bit, due to your understanding of gender.
  • James Marsters will voice balding mastermind Lex Luthor. After playing Spike in Buffy, Brainiac in Smallville, Captain John in Torchwood and Piccolo in the recent Dragon Ball movie, this should be a nice notch in his nerd-fame belt.
  • Wonder Woman's adversary, Circe, will be voiced by Michelle Forbes, who provided the voice for Dr. Mossman in Half-Life 2. She's also been in every sci-fi show ever made. All of them. Seriously.

As if the promise of real (in-game) superpowers didn't provide enough incentive to get in on DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment revealed several pre-order bonuses for the game from different retailers.

For example, pre-ordering from Amazon will earn you Batman (for use in a two-on-two arena battle mode) and an exclusive in-game item, the Amazonian Gauntlets (get it?). Walmart pre-orders also come with the arena mode Batman character, plus Joker's Trick Pistol. There are unique DC Comics-inspired armaments available from eight different retailers in all.

In addition, pre-ordering the collector's edition will entitle you to a Batman figurine and two more weapons. You can browse all the available options at SOE's pre-order site. And if you can't wait for your pre-ordered copy to arrive, sign up for the open beta now.

Whether you're a super hero or super villain, certain expenses come with the gig. Spandex dry cleaning, killer robot minion maintenance and death laser calibration -- all of these things require cash. And so does keeping up your virtual identity, it would seem.

Joystiq sister site Massively has confirmed with SOE that in addition to the standard retail purchase price ($50 for PC; $60 for PS3), DC Universe Online will require players to pay a monthly subscription fee of $15. Subscriptions fees have been part of the monthly living expenses for seasoned MMO players for a long time now, though we wonder how the non-Bruce Wayne types will react to one of the more pricier subscriptions out there.

But let's face it -- even in a massively multiplayer online game, you can't always have a full party of helpful members with which to face your challenges. Sometimes you're up late, playing by yourself, and you've got to grind it out alone.

And that's where the road meets the rubber in an MMO: Is the game fun even without the multiplayer element? I got a chance to see Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online in action at a pre-E3 event a few weeks ago, and played a combat-based level by myself. And while I did get to see some new features of the game by browsing through the menus and beating up Harley Quinn's henchmen with my Batman-alike, I'm sorry to say that DCUO's combat isn't quite as enthralling as it could be.

When we pressed for a more solid release date, an SOE rep kept mum, but reiterated that both PS3 and PC iterations of the title would arrive at retail simultaneously later this year.

With a release window finalized -- falling right in line with Sony's promised timeframe, might we add -- Sony will assuredly trot out the title in a more open fashion come E3 (read: we'll see more than just Metropolis, we hope). As for The Agency? Apparently that PS3/PC MMO from SOE is still hiding in the shadows for now.
