In his dad's used auto parts store in LA, he's constructed his own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/diy">DIY</a> cardboard arcade -- it's there now; you can totally go see it and play.<br /><br />Seriously, the kid built his own claw machine! He's even devised a security system so that people won't rip him off when paying for a Fun Pass, which grants patrons 500 plays a month for $2.<br /><br />But the problem was nobody was coming in to play Caine's games. His dad's shop wasn't in an area of LA with a lot of foot traffic, but a chance encounter with Nirvan Mullick lead to something special: an organized flashmob. Mullick filmed everything, creating a short film that is set to debut on October 28 at DIY Days at UCLA.<br /><br />This kid is <em>the best</em> and why are you not watching the video already?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/10/not-all-arcades-are-dead-the-story-of-one-kids-diy-cardboard-a/">Not all arcades are dead: The story of one kid's DIY cardboard arcade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 18:30:00 EST. Most game developers are locked in a tiring, endless technological arms race -- but not Teague, a Seattle-based tech design firm. Using their proprietary <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/teague/teagueduino-learn-to-make">Teagueduino</a> software, the team created an analog video game in a shoebox. It's about as Lo-Fi as things get; and it's ridiculously charming.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/teagueduino-used-to-create-analog-shoebox-video-game/">Teagueduino used to create analog shoebox video game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 22:26:00 EST. Following in the footsteps of groups like Anamanaguchi and Starscream, YouTube user MrSeberi has discovered a brave, radical new musical application for a piece of video game hardware with which you're likely very familiar. Check out his take on "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpdYKamOjUo">Game Boy Music</a>" in the video posted below!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/game-boy-music-video-is-exactly-what-it-sounds-like/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Game Boy Music' video is exactly what it sounds like</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/10/game-boy-music-video-is-exactly-what-it-sounds-like/">'Game Boy Music' video is exactly what it sounds like</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Apr 2011 20:00:00 EST. <br />
It might look, well, <em>insane</em>, consisting of a metal plate (in the example, a "handicap" sign), a bit of PVC pipe, and Velcro, but it appears to fulfill its function of<em> putting a flat surface on the top of your TV</em>. Besides, nobody'd be able to tell you had instituted such an unorthodox solution unless they peeked behind the TV, and then they'd probably just be impressed by the combination of thrift and cleverness it suggests.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/diy-kinect-tv-stand-uses-10-worth-of-materials/">DIY Kinect TV stand uses $10 worth of materials</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 20:55:00 EST. The problem with old technology is that it's ... well, it's usually pretty <em>old</em>, by definition. We get spoiled by the new stuff -- things like wirelessness, ergonomitude and tactical feedbackery. Well, in the case of the latter, it would seem we now have someone to look up to: <a href="http://andygoetz.org/post/an-nes-rumble-pak">Andy Goetz</a>.<br />
<br />
He's gone ahead and added rumble functionality to the classic <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nes">NES</a> controller, which you can see above. Sure, it's not the most efficient mod -- caveat: Goetz can't really control when the controller provides feedback, so it's not a perfect union -- but we applaud his entry in the Oregon State University Engineering Expo nonetheless. We've been trying to fix the past for years -- who knew trying to build a time machine and finding somebody named Kyle Reese who's willing to use it was the wrong way to go?<br />
<br />

Oh, you've made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/26/fan-totally-nerfs-the-halo-assault-rifle/">your own assault rifle</a> from <em>Halo</em>? That's cute. Wait, you've made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/02/guy-in-spartan-suit-wins-2-000/">your own Spartan suit</a>? Meh, it's okay, we guess. See, the dudes at <a href="http://petemanderfx.com/">Peter Mander FX</a> have ruined us <em>forever</em>, because they've produced about the best homage to <em>Halo</em> one could ever hope for: the ultra-realistic Elite suit you see above.<br />
<br />
Largely comprised of plastic, TLC and <em>dark magicks</em>, the suit not only looks impressive, but it's animatronic. We can't imagine the blood, sweat and/or tears it took to produce such a lifelike recreation of this Covenant class, but we can get some idea from the video documenting the creation of this behemoth, which you can find past the break.

Media Molecule's latest exercise in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a> creativity -- a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/contraption-challenge">Contraption Challenge</a> in which players had to build clever water-traversing vehicles -- has borne some pretty delicious fruits. The <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/03/22/littlebigplanet-contraption-challenge-2/">six finalists' creations</a> can be seen in the video above, but first place (a title that comes with a copy of <em>LittleBigPlanet PSP</em> and a PSP Go) went to Asbestos101's "Crouching Boat, Hidden Car."<br />

We can't wait to see what the next <em>LBP </em>challenge will require from its players -- perhaps an AI construct built from simple switches and levers that's <em>capable of love?</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/22/littlebigplanet-amphibious-contraption-challenge-winner-reveal/">LittleBigPlanet 'Amphibious' Contraption Challenge winner revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Mar 2010 13:14:00 EST. This has to be the most endearing display of cross-developer love we've seen during our games writing careers. Capcom's Shawn Baxter (a.k.a. "Snow,") <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/12/05/my_hand_made_fable_fortunes_tower_set">recently posted on the company's community blog</a> about his latest D.I.Y. project -- a real-life version of <em>Fortune's Tower</em>, one of the pub games featured in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable-2"><em>Fable II</em></a>. Oh, and in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable-2-pub-games"><em>Fable II Pub Games</em></a>, though you probably didn't need us to tell you that.<br />
<br />
Words can't really describe this two-month, $400 project as well as pictures, so hop on over to <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/12/05/my_hand_made_fable_fortunes_tower_set">Capcom's blog</a> and check out the <em>delectable</em> fruits of Baxter's labor. If you're of a crafty ilk, the post also contains a few blueprints you can follow to make your own <em>Fortune's Tower</em> set. We probably won't post about yours, though. This is a one-time thing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/06/capcom-employee-recreates-fable-iis-fortunes-tower-pub-game/">Capcom employee recreates Fable II's Fortune's Tower pub game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 Dec 2009 15:00:00 EST. Normally when people mod real instruments for use in music-rhythm games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>Rock Band</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a>, they don't intentionally include the ability for someone else to play along by punching them. For Norway's Morten Skogly, that choice seemed only natural. On <a href="http://pappmaskin.no/2009/10/diy-spill-rock-band-2-med-ekte-gitar-og-boksehansker/">his website</a>, you can see a shot-by-shot breakdown of the process necessary to transform something that creates music into something that plays along with music. <br />
<br />
In fairness, the entire (ridiculously intricate) process leads to the hilarious video you'll find after the break. You see, rather than strum on the strings of his guitar, the punching gloves (punching him, mind you) approximate a strum for him. That means that every time he pushes a note, he gets punched. It's like penance!<br />

The team at The Behemoth know you're having a hard time coming up with something original and awesome for Halloween, so the team has included an instructional guide to creating your very own <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Castle-Crashers/">Castle Crashers</a></em> inspired costume <a href="http://devblog.thebehemoth.com/?p=1940">on its blog</a>. <br /><br />Taking a simple 5-gallon bucket, some foam and a pocket full of hopes and dreams, you can rock one of the best costumes we've seen (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/how-to-build-a-big-daddy-costume-in-many-complicated-steps/">all week</a>, at least). As an added bonus, the guide is simple and includes plenty of pictures to guide would-be costume designers -- and future "Best Costume of the Night" award winners.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/24/castle-crash-halloween-with-this-behemoth-of-a-costume/">(Castle) Crash Halloween with this Behemoth of a costume</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. Recent connection issues have marred European <em><a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/PixelJunk-Monsters-Deluxe/">PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe</a></em> owners from participating in rousing online games against North American and Asian players. Thankfully, the <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/10/16/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-online-compatibility-problem-fixed/">PlayStation Blog</a> has released a two-part DIY guide to help fix the PSP game's issues. The process is simple:<br />
<ol>
    <li>Delete your game through the PSP Home Menu (select Game&gt;Memory Stick&gt;press the triangle button with <em>PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe</em> highlighted and select Delete).</li>
    <li> Connect to PlayStation Store &gt; Select View Downloads and re-download <em>PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe</em> from the Download List.</li>
</ol>
Users will still retain their previous progress and now (hopefully) be completely problem free in their quest for online <em>Deluxe</em> dominance.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/">PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/#2056032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/title_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/#2056031"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/special_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/#2056030"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/medium_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/#2056029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/island_select_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe/#2056028"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/hard_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-gets-diy-compatibility-fix/">PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe gets DIY compatibility fix</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. If you're prone to falling under spells where all you want to do is dismantle your (slightly less) expensive pieces of technology, DIY site <a href="http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation-3-Slim/1121/2">IFixIt recently posted a comprehensive manual</a> on how to take the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3-slim">PS3 Slim</a> completely apart. We suppose this article serves three important purposes:<br />
<ol>
    <li>It gives a good look at the guts of Sony's new streamlined hardware.</li>
    <li>It gives modders instructions on how to prepare their consoles for Frankenstein-ation.</li>
    <li>It teaches Xbox fanboys how to <em>obliterate</em> the PS3 Slim in a showy, $300 act of protest.</li>

If you were a fan of THQ's DIY DS title <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Drawn-to-Life/">Drawn to Life</a></em>, you'll be pleased to hear the highly sketchable game will be getting a follow-up this fall, as <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090526005390&amp;newsLang=en">revealed by a recent press release</a>. This time around, <em>Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter</em> will be coming to Wii and DS, and will be adding a whole slew of new features -- the most intriguing of these is the "Action Drawing" tool, which lets you create objects mid-game in order to work your way through the title's environments.<br /><br />The original <em>Drawn to Life</em> was pretty enjoyable, but a tad shallow in the actual gameplay department. Hopefully, this new feature will spice things up a tad. However, given the average DS illustrator's undeniable proclivity for doodling <em>dongs</em>, they really should give the portable version a different subtitle -- perhaps <em>Captain Wangsword Vs. The Genital Armada</em> would be more apt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/thq-reveals-drawn-to-life-the-next-chapter-for-wii-and-ds/">THQ reveals Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter for Wii and DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 11:40:00 EST. Let's say, hypothetically, that you <em>really</em> want to play something on Xbox Live. For illustration's sake, we'll say that something is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-3"><em>Halo 3</em></a>. Alas, the "high-speed interweb access" you bought from that guy behind the 7-11 turns out to be nothing more than a tin can with a string attached. You try to use your neighbor's wireless internet connection, only to find that it's been encrypted. Ungrateful jerks, that's the last time you give <em>them</em> a fruitcake at Christmas.<br /><br />So what's a desperate gamer to do? Easy, just hook your Xbox up to your PC and tether it to your 3G phone. Killthrash over at <a href="http://www.2old2play.com/News/Using_ATT__39_s_3g_for_Xbox_Live">2old2play</a> has posted a handy guide to connecting to Xbox Live using a laptop and a Blackberry Bold on AT&amp;T's 3G network. It takes some work and it's not as smooth as a dedicated connection -- and will probably <em>destroy</em> your data plan -- but gamers do what they have to do, right? <br /><br />Now, if someone can make this happen with a Mac too, then <em>everyone</em> wins.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/22/desperate-for-xbox-live-hook-it-up-with-a-3g-phone/">Desperate for Xbox Live? Many of the 90 (!) included samples look <em>just like</em> real <em>WarioWare</em> minigames, which speaks highly of either the creation tools or the staff at Intelligent Systems. <br /><br />In fact, it's basically as if there were a full <em>WarioWare</em> game included in the package. The sample minigames, like those in other <em>Wares</em>, are divided into groups based on which WarioWare employee "created" them. Mona's games are "Strange," like in the original GBA game. Jimmy T's theme is "Sports," Ashley's is "Food," Orbulon's games are "IQ" themed, and 9-Volt is "Nintendo."<br /><br />Not only can you play these sample minigames, you can open them up and mess with them! You can alter the art and music (and <em>look at</em>, but not alter the base gameplay) in the samples, as well as games that you get from your friends.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/14/see-what-you-can-do-in-made-in-ore/">See what you can do in Made in Ore</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST. The April 23 Japanese release is totally sneaking up on us! As the unexpectedly close release approaches, a bit more info has started coming out about the game.<br /><br />According to 1up, <em>Made in Ore</em> is divided into three sections: "My House," the portion of the game in which you make minigames, "WarioWare," presumably Wario's game company, which contains tutorials, and "My Shop," in which you line up your microgames into a game. There are also utilities to create music and four-panel ("yon-koma") comics -- and all of this can be uploaded to Nintendo "for contest purposes." The <em>Asobu Made in Ore</em> WiiWare player is still on the way, as well!<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/a-few-details-on-made-in-ore-the-diy-warioware/">A few details on Made in Ore, the DIY WarioWare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet's</em></a> influence is going beyond video games and into the realm of films. The Independent Film Channel used <em>LBP's</em> mantra of "Play, Create, Share" as the theme for a film-making contest it was holding a few months back. <br /><br />While directors didn't have to use <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> in their film shorts (and none of the finalists did, by the way), they were tasked to take inspiration from the game's atmospheric "art and act of creating." Sadly, you won't get to see Sackboy turned into a movie star with these films. Check out the winning short film, "Papercuts," after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/ifc-short-film-contest-takes-inspiration-from-littlebigplanet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>IFC short film contest takes inspiration from LittleBigPlanet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/ifc-short-film-contest-takes-inspiration-from-littlebigplanet/">IFC short film contest takes inspiration from LittleBigPlanet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 12:45:00 EST. Every year there's the occasional tree or set of ornaments, but it just seems there should be more. In the fine tradition of American retailers, we'd like to get started on Halloween a little early this year. We've got pumpkins, costumes, and parties -- all things just ripe for you to undertake yourself once the holiday rolls around. Doing something gaming-related yourself? Make sure you let us know!<br /><br />Also, hey -- if you're looking to get started early on your spooky plans this year, maybe <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/show-and-tell-all-hallows-eve-eve/1024972/">some of these</a> will help get the (ooshy gooshy layers of) brain cranking out some ideas.<br /><br /><br /><br />

Geek crafts often start with things you can put on your own body, or on the "bodies" of the things you care about (like your DS!). From <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/16/wear-this-bob-omb-jewelry-at-a-safe-distance/">jewelry</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/more-fan-created-phoenix-wright-ace-apparel/">clothes</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/zombees-case-will-stay-in-your-head-in-your-head/">cases</a>, we've seen a lot of wearables in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/show-and-tell/">history of Show and Tell</a>, so for the second week in our new format, it only seemed sensible to revisit one of the most popular types of fan-made objects. If you need a <em>thing</em> to put on another <em>thing</em>, you've come to the right place! <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/show-and-tell-wearables/985004/">Take a tour of our latest finds</a>, or dip directly into the gallery below.<br /><br /><br /><br />

<div align="left">Kudos to Flickr user Obajoo, who went and did what none of us are brave enough to do: despite having no previous experience, she added this classy design of two silhouetted birds to her Metallic Rose DS. Writing about the process on her <a href="http://www.thedomesticscientist.com/2008/07/16/custom-ds/">blog</a>, Obajoo makes it <em>sound</em> reasonably straightforward -- so much so that we're even beginning to <em>think about contemplating whether or not to maybe consider</em> customizing our DS. Sometimes, it takes us a while to get to submissions in Show and Tell -- we get so many great ones! -- but we do <em>try</em> to get there. Reader Weixin sent pictures of this awesome homemade case back in January, when the thick fabric was just perfect for a winter snuggle. Now, in July, when the hot days make us sleeeepy, this cushy case looks like it could double as a pillow for afternoon naps. <br /><br />After taking a World Crafts course, Weixin figured it was time to learn to sew, and this was the first project she undertook, with the help of her mother. Even with a little motherly assistance, it came out astonishingly well. The first time <span style="font-style: italic;">I</span> sewed anything, I ended up tangled in thread and bleeding all over the place, so an actual functioning result is pretty impressive -- and attractive, too!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/show-and-tell-first-times-the-charm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Show and Tell: First time's the charm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/show-and-tell-first-times-the-charm/">Show and Tell: First time's the charm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. The case : cartridge size ratio for DS games is like 300 : 1. You could fit a huge pile of the tiny games inside a single case, but then there's a grand total of one secure slot. A bit of overkill for the cases, then, but the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/the-history-of-dragon-quest-iv-boxart/">awesome boxart</a> on most games needs to be acknowledged -- so no smaller, please.<br /><br />Leave it to the rest of us to solve this problem, Nintendo. A handy little uber-case has been found, and you can secure 16 DS carts inside with ease. It comes in clear, pink or black, and retails for around eight dollars. Much better price than some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/cases-in-point-ds-lite/">other accessories</a>. Check out some more images after the break, and head to the <a href="http://209.85.171.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;sl=ja&amp;u=http://www.hori.jp/products/dsl/dsl_cardcase16/&amp;prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG">official accessory page</a> for extra goodies.<br /><br />It's settled, then. You'll have your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/21/show-and-tell-beware-tears-of-jealousy-ahead/">brilliant stack</a> of DS games all lined up nice and pretty, so visitors will realize how cool you are when they drop by. Little do they know, the cartridges will be stored safely in your bag! Find a mega-case and get efficient, because Nintendo <em>wants you to</em>. We have seen some really girly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/fit-for-a-princess-ds-plays-dress-up/">case mods</a> (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/recipe-for-a-smile-grab-one-of-these-cases/">cases</a>!) in our time, but this design is near the top of the chickalicious heap. We're willing to bet reader Juri never misplaces her Lite, since it probably reflects any and all light sources and emits beams of <em>pure pink happiness</em>. That's got to be convenient. <br /><br />Juri picked up a <a href="http://strapya-world.com/index.html">DS decoration kit</a> and went to town on the above, though she reports only having used part of the set, which was apparently quite epic. Since each item has to be affixed separately, there's a lot of room for personalization, even with the pre-designed sets (and we'd bet it's tiring). The charms also serve as styli, which is a neat touch.<br /><br />

Have an old Game Boy lying around? You could use it to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/walkin-on-game-boys/">pave your garden</a> ... or, you could follow the example set here by reader Matt's incredible ladyfriend Katie and turn it into one of the coolest cases we've ever seen. A little denim, a little padding, a few pockets, plus some retro handheld goodness is all it took to make us <em>totally jealous</em>. <br /><br />We'd buy it. Someone get Katie an Etsy store, <em>stat</em>.<br /><br /><br />

Need a case? Sure, you could buy one -- and there are plenty available -- but as a dedicated Show and Tell reader, surely by now you can guess where this is going. If you just shouted out, "Wisconsin!," you are both very wrong and <em>very</em> random (also, stop yelling at the screen; it's sensitive). If, instead, you suspect a little DIY is ahead, you just may be right.<br /><br />Reader Eleniel decided to make a case, but there was just one problem -- no sewing machine about. But that's okay, because DS Fanboy readers are <em>hardcore</em>, so like your intrepid hostess, Eleniel sewed it by hand. It is, however, one hell of a lot better than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/07/show-and-tell-let-us-show-you-them/">my work</a>. It's got that fancy new <em>zipper</em> technology. That doesn't mean it's perfect, though; Eleniel confesses that the pocket designed to hold games doesn't exactly hold anything. We still like checking it out, though. And, while on the DIY kick, Eleniel also made an <em>Okami</em>-inspired skin. Might as well go all out, right? You can check out the finished products in our gallery below. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elenials-diy-case-and-skin/">Eleniel's DIY case and skin</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elenials-diy-case-and-skin/#820369"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/el-case-3-st_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elenials-diy-case-and-skin/#820368"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/el-case-1-st_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elenials-diy-case-and-skin/#820367"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/el-case-2-st_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/elenials-diy-case-and-skin/#820366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/el-st-okcase_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homebrew_%28video_games%29">homebrew</a> community <em>lurves</em> the Nintendo DS, and it's no surprise why: a portable system with WiFi capabilities, two screens, and none of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PSP-Firmware/">firmware-updating nonsense</a> that the PSP has become infamous for? If we had the skills, we'd be 'brewing it up too.<br /><br />Luckily, our BFF's over at DS Fanboy have put together an <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2008/05/20/ds-fanboys-semi-ultimate-homebrew-guide/">incredibly handy guide to the best DS homebrew peripherals</a>, and what to do with them once they arrive on your doorstep. It even comes with a handy glossary, so you can feel cool and start dropping terms like "MoonShell" and "DLDI." Instant homebrew cred!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/a-guide-to-homebrew-on-the-ds/">A guide to homebrew on the DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. Why? Because it was made with tender loving care by his obviously wonderful mother. Aren't moms great? So, uh ... hey, Mom, you want to dig out your crafts box and put some yarn to good use? <br /><br />Hit up the gallery below for a closer look at the case, which is really well-made. We've seen a lot of DIY cases, and while many of them look <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/ya-rly-another-homemade-case/"><span style="font-style: italic;">really</span></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/its-like-a-fruit-roll-up-only-for-your-ds-and-not-edible/">good</a>, the simplicity of this case, definitely won us over. Probably because we're utterly hopeless with crochet hooks and knitting needles. Can we get a training game or something for that?<br /><br />

We <em>love</em> to see <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/show-and-tell/">what folks do</a> with their handhelds. Whether its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/diy">DIY</a> or just a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/essential-extras-monaco-aluminum-case/">really nice product</a>, we're always looking for something new to feature on the site. Today, the above slice of heaven comes from flickr user southpawn, who's got quite the nice DS package. Whether it's the handheld, or the nice carrying case crafted for it, we're fans of the work southpawn has done here.<br /><br />Head on past the break for a look from some other angles.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/a-stylish-diy-makeover/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A stylish DIY makeover</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/a-stylish-diy-makeover/">A stylish DIY makeover</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 15:00:00 EST. It may take a village to raise a child, but it only takes three people to build one of the coolest custom computers we've seen in a long time. DS Fanboy reader (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/ds-fanswag-our-new-riders/">prizewinner</a>!) Jason Barnes, who posts as Ganthor, wrote in with this story, and we just <em>had</em> to share. Seems his friend Emily picked up a Mini-ITX motherboard and wanted a custom case for it, but didn't want to build it herself. Luckily, Jason did, and he recruited another friend, Jason Letterman, to help him get the project underway. <br /><br />Once he had permission to build the case, Jason was free to pursue a dream: building a computer in a lunch box. Of course, just any lunch box wouldn't do; it had to be something special that suited Emily's tastes (which are clearly <span style="font-style: italic;">excellent</span>). After taking some measurements and checking out the various Nintendo lunch boxes, he ordered the one shown above.<br /><br />But that was the easy part!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/">Super Princess PC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/#794835"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/st-jb-sppc1002ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/#794834"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/st-jb-sppc2001ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/#794832"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/st-jb-sppc003ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/#794831"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/st-jb-sppc1001ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-princess-pc/#794830"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/st-jb-sppc001ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/show-and-tell-super-princess-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Show and Tell: Super Princess PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/show-and-tell-super-princess-pc/">Show and Tell: Super Princess PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 18:00:00 EST. <br />Being nothing more than a chunky, round slab of plastic with a convenient slot for your Wiimote to slide into, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-evolution-of-the-wii-wheel/735211/">Wii Wheel</a> is fairly easily imitated. As if to illustrate this fact, one Japanese blogger fashioned the DIY Wii Wheel you see above, using only a saucepan lid and a strip of parcel tape. We suppose it's a cheaper alternative to shelling out cash to equip another three players, but doesn't this make the B button inaccessible? Steer past the break for another (considerably more wheel-like) homemade example.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/you-already-have-a-wii-wheel-in-your-own-home/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You already have a Wii Wheel in your own home</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/you-already-have-a-wii-wheel-in-your-own-home/">You already have a Wii Wheel in your own home</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 14:15:00 EST. Stark white slabs, neatly stacked ... no, it's not the preliminary plans for Apple iChocolate (available in white only), but rather, the work of a DS owner in need. Reader PeZ had a problem: a lost game. And while the missing game turned up later, it revealed a flaw in his DS cart storage system. Nothing quite fit his needs; either everything was too big, too small, or unsafe. One day, as he finished off some <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lakerol-Original-Tin-12/dp/B000E2Z6EO/ref=pd_bbs_6?ie=UTF8&amp;s=gourmet-food&amp;qid=1207250183&amp;sr=8-6">L&auml;kerol mints</a>, an idea struck. Surely that neat little tin would be good for <em>something</em>.<br /><br />And so PeZ got to work. As a designer, he had some idea of how to start -- he drew up plans for the perfect cart case. To the right, you can see the plans, which were eventually cut from black cardboard and glued to the inside of the tin. PeZ reports that, with slots cut in, the carts are perfectly secure, even with the tin held upside down! But with the practical inside complete, the outside needed a little work. To see what he came up with, jaunt on past the break.<br /><br />Got something you want to show off to all the other DS fans? We like just about anything with a little Nintendo flavor, so snap a few pics and send 'em off to tell us what's up, and send it all to <strong>showmeit <strong>[at]</strong> dsfanboy [dot] com</strong>. We'll take care of the rest.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/show-and-tell-minty-inspiration/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Show and Tell: Minty inspiration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/show-and-tell-minty-inspiration/">Show and Tell: Minty inspiration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 18:00:00 EST.
