It's unclear whether flOw is a port of the PSP version or the original PS3 version, but we feel safe in assuming that it's the former, considering the PlayStation Suite's track record with repurposing PSP titles.

We can't imagine that playing a Syphon Filter game on a capacitive touch screen would be a rewarding experience, but flOw and Pinball Heroes sound like they'd translate well to the tactile interface of the Sony Tablet. We'll keep our ears to the ground for pricing and release information as it becomes available.
Daxter, more PSP games re-rated for PlayStation Certified devices originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 12:00:00 EST. Starting this week, frugal PSP gamers can snag UMD Dual Packs for 15 clams. Games come in genre-flavored bundles of two (Secret Agent Clank and Daxter, for example), and are also available for download in the PlayStation Store, if physical media isn't your thing.
Continue reading PSP Dual Packs double down on games for $15

PSP Dual Packs double down on games for $15 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 15:00:00 EST. The new "PSP Essentials" line is launching June 2 with a selection of 20 games, including Daxter, Patapon 2, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, LocoRoco and more. They'll be available at the same price on UMD and as downloads on PSN.

In the PlayStation Blog post announcing the line, SCEE's Mayumi Donovan indicated that in addition to these 20 games, "there will be more games to follow." The line is slated to launch in Australia and New Zealand later in 2010. See the launch lineup after the break.
We've heard of buyer's remorse. Even seller's remorse. But mailer's remorse? That could be afflicting developer Ready at Dawn, as the company jokes that it might have been too hasty when it turned its back on Sony's portable and marked all of its PSP dev kits 'return to sender.' The company announced in June that it was "officially done with PSP development," but after seeing both Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus among the top 5 PSP games sold on Amazon last week, the studio is cheekily patting its own back.

"Maybe we should reconsider this whole 'no more PSP games' thing because we seem to be pretty good at it," reads a post on Ready at Dawn's blog. We're inclined to agree, even if it is in jest. With a few more studios like you around, maybe the PSP wouldn't need a life raft to stay afloat.
Ready at Dawn: 'Maybe we should reconsider' PSP development originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 10:10:00 EST. A snippet from the latest issue of GamePro claims that Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus dev Ready at Dawn has ditched PSP development in favor of producing Wii-only titles. Joystiq contacted RAD (pretty cool acronym, huh?) president Didier Malenfant, who was quick to squash the report (although we can't be sure he didn't thwap it with a Wii remote left over from porting Okami to Nintendo's console).

Malenfant further tells Joystiq that his company "[doesn't] have any Wii titles currently in development." RAD had previously hinted at plans to create games for current-gen consoles after finishing Okami Wii, and just today confirmed that it has two all-new games underway. So, two new games in development, none for Wii ... rumorong!
Rumorong: Ready at Dawn not going Wii-exclusive originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 20:10:00 EST. When it comes to developer Ready at Dawn, creating games for the PSP is just so last week. But while the company has closed the book on any PSP aspirations, going so far as to mail its entire stock of dev kits back to Sony, the developer of both Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus has played the reason for abandoning PSP development close to its chest.

It's a mystery, but mysteries give us headaches, so we tracked down Ready At Dawn's president, Didier Malenfant, to find out why exactly the studio has turned up its nose at developing for Sony's sexed-up portable. "We feel like we've done everything we wanted to do with the PSP," admitted the exec. "We have new projects on other platforms and we like to focus on one thing at a time."

Even so, Didier championed the state of PSP development, stating matter-of-factly "Good games sell. Who would have thought?"
Continue reading Ready at Dawn talks abandoning the PSP, piracy and being original

Ready at Dawn talks abandoning the PSP, piracy and being original originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 05:00:00 EST. Developer Ready at Dawn has turned its back on Sony's handheld, with a short post on the company's website confirming that the studio is "now officially done with PSP development." Ready at Dawn is best recognized for two of the PSP's more landmark titles, namely Daxter and last year's God of War: Chains of Olympus, though the company's recent success in bringing Capcom's Okami to the Wii may have more than a little to do with the dev's shifting priorities.

Calling the decision "the end of an era," the move has an air of finality about it, with Ready at Dawn packing up all of its PSP dev kits and sending them back from whence they came. The news echoes comments from Ready at Dawn's Ru Weerasuriya earlier this year, with the Chains of Olympus director noting back in March that "our work on the PSP has come to an end." As for what the devs have in store for us next, your guess is as good as ours, though we've dispatched Joystiq ninjas to the Santa Ana-based studio for more information.

[Via Aeropause]
Ready at Dawn ceases PSP development originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 23:05:00 EST. French site Jeuxvideo.fr states that PSP games Daxter and Wipeout Pulse are being ported to the PS2. The story seems probable considering how many PSP to PS2 ports there have been, but at this time it's an unconfirmed rumor.

Given the history of high-profile PSP games like R&C: Size Matters and the GTAs being ported to the the PS2, we have to wonder if GoW: Chains of Olympus and Secret Agent Clank will make the leap at some point; the Chains of Olympus port rumor is already old news.
Sony has made it something of a tradition to move its big PSP exclusives back onto Sony's aging home console. While this potential move may anger some, it's important to note that these ports usually come out over a year since the original release -- long past a game's relevance at the store shelves.

These ports are not confirmed (the only source we see is French site Jeuxvideo.fr). But with Wipeout HD coming out on PS3 and Secret Agent Clank coming out on PSP, there's very little reason for fans to get up-in-arms about these potential projects.

[Thanks, Joe!]
Rumor: Wipeout Pulse and Daxter moving to PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 May 2008 00:15:00 EST. What an adorable Daxter plushie. It's so cute you just want to grab it and squeeze the life out of the thing. It's a really sweet ode to the weasel-like hero. We wonder if she'll make us one of her plushies. Maybe she will ... if we ask really nicely.

[Thanks Max! Developer Ready at Dawn, currently preparing God of War: Chains of Olympus for March 4 release, announced its freshman effort Daxter has sold over two million copies worldwide. Sure, two million sold for a game which released in 2006 isn't an insane sprint in terms of sales, but it's a marathon victory. The game certainly benefited from being bundled with new PSPs last year, but the developer says Daxter saw its best sales in nearly two years during December '07.

Ready at Dawn notes that it can only look forward to GoW: Chains of Olympus doing better than its first project. Considering our experiences with Kratos' handheld adventure so far, there's not too much Ready at Dawn needs to worry about.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP's Daxter sells 2 million copies in 2 years originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 16:25:00 EST. In a surprise move, Sony has announced that the PSP Slim Daxter bundle is available right now. The package includes the silver PSP Slim, the greatest hits version of Daxter and the Family Guy Freakin' Sweet Collection UMD, a well as a 1 GB memory stick for $199.

The accessories such as additional AC adapters, the sexy video out cables, or the new headphone adapter will be released in the following weeks. Also the black PSP Slim solo PSP package will be released 'during September' with the white Star Wars Battlefront PSP Slim package coming in October. Big news, so who out there is gonna be the first person to pick up a new PSP and report back here?

[Update] According to commentors, the pack is available sporadically across the country. In the meantime, you can order it from Gamestop online right here. It is in stock and will ship today (or maybe tomorrow depending on their cut off time).

Press release after the jump.
Continue reading PSP Slim Daxter Entertainment pack available immediately

PSP Slim Daxter Entertainment pack available immediately originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 13:00:00 EST. SCEE representative Jonathan Fargher spilled a short list of exclusive titles due to hit shelves before the end of the year while defending the PS3: "Title due to hit shelves in the Christmas run-up include the latest installment of favourites such as Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, and Jak and Daxter." Yeah, he said Jak and Daxter. We had very little idea this game was even beyond the planning stage!

It's true that Sony has been holding out a lot of information to win the hearts of everyone at E3, but this is a huge and successful franchise they've been keeping a lid on. We're going to add this to the list of wishful thinking, but who knows. It very well might make a showing at E3, TGS, and retail shelves this holiday season. The $30 price drop isn't exclusive to GameStop/EB Games--it's universal. But, that's not where the savings end. Sony has also added two more games to PSP's Greatest Hits lineup: Daxter and Syphon Filter.

According to the press release, "We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the 'Greatest Hits' library, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP's lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend."

Sony also reminds players that the future of PSP is quite bright, especially with the upcoming God of War: "Ready At Dawn couldn't be more pleased with our success bringing Daxter to the PSP platform last year, and now we have another opportunity to blow away expectations of what a developer can accomplish on a portable when Kratos hits the 'small screen' in God of War," said Didier Malenfant, co-founder and president, Ready At Dawn Studios. "PSP is an ideal platform for us to work on because we have a high level of freedom to be creative, and we can deliver gameplay experiences that rival ones you'd get from a computer entertainment system."

[Update: According to Engadget, the PSP Entertainment Pack will also receive a $30 cut, from $250 to $220.]
Sony makes price drop official; adds Daxter and Syphon Filter to Greatest Hits originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 10:00:00 EST.
Ready At Dawn has been in the news a lot lately, but most PSP gamers still love them for their work on Daxter. This week's art depicts the various qualities of our hero. Wennichelle created this work and I'm not sure I've ever seen Daxter depicted any cuter. If Daxter looks good (and he does) there's probably a reason. Wennichelle has done many Daxter fan arts prior and I actually had a difficult time picking which one I wanted to use. If you like Daxter and/or the art above, go check out Wennichelle's Deviant Art account for more. Thanks for making such great fan art Wennichelle!

Well, a rumor is circulating around the web, speaking about the possibility of a PSP Jak game. The (warning) oft-unreliable Wikipedia appears to have a record of the rumor: it began when the resume of voice actor Robin Atkins Downes revealed two unannounced titles: Jak PSP and Big. Since then, Big has turned into Naughty Dog's upcoming PS3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Could Jak PSP be far behind?

The only other evidence supporting this rumor comes from a previous job opening at Naughty Dog, requesting PSP-specific developers. With Ready at Dawn working on God of War, it could be possible that Naughty Dog is working on a PSP Jak game internally. However, with no concrete evidence available right now, this rumor remains exactly that. But, a new Jak game would certainly be a good part of a revived effort to make the platform successful.

[Via 1UP]
Rumor: Jak coming to PSP? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 14:15:00 EST. Ready at Dawn has been getting a lot of attention lately. Their first game, Daxter, is considered one of PSP's best: not only does it feature solid gameplay, but it features truly impressive graphics technology, and completely invisible load times. Obviously, the team has learned new tricks, and has managed to squeeze more power out of our handheld for their upcoming God of War game. According to co-founder Didier Malenfant, Daxter doesn't come close to taking advantage of the system's true capabilities: "[We] made the conscious decision not to push the hardware as far as we could ... mainly because we wanted to ship the game in a timely manner."

Obviously, the talented team is unlocking even more of PSP's power in God of War. However, "the biggest frustration right now, in a way, is the limitation on the clock speed. We'd love to run our games at 333Mhz (we do internally just for kicks) because it does make a big difference in how much stuff you can push on the platform."

So, how does Ready at Dawn feel about being responsible for two of Sony's biggest franchises? "The truth is," Malenfant explained, "we built Ready At Dawn Studios to create original IP, but ... I don't think anyone here regrets working on two of the world's biggest franchises in the meantime."

The future is bright for this Santa Ana-based team. The single most wanted request the team receives, though, is a PS2 version of Daxter. "I think everyone here would love to do it, and it actually wouldn't be that hard because Daxter was never designed as a handheld game, we could even add a few things for the PS2 version."

[Via Gamasutra; Thanks, Joe!]
Ready at Dawn explains PSP's power; prepares PS2 Daxter? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Mar 2007 18:00:00 EST. Well first of all, I'm just happy that I am getting more God of War this year, so it fulfills my wishes on that level, but I suppose I should have more expectations than that. Here's what I'd like to see in God of War PSP:

New weapons (and if possible some that are as fun as the chain blades)

More powers (how 'bout one that turns enemies into curly fries)

More level spanning boss battles (like the colossus battle)

Keep the epic levels and feel

Orchestrated music (with opera singers if possible, they always sound dramatic)

More puzzles around killing enemies or using their corpses

Co-op (it's all the rage now)

Visuals on par with the PS2 titles

Intuitive controls

PSP sales have been quite good the last few months and I figured there's probably a lot of new PSP owners that may not be up to speed on what great games the system has to offer. With that in mind, every day this week we'll feature a new genre and list the top 5 games (according to metareviews), so no matter what you're into, you'll have some idea of what games you should own. We start off the week with one of the most popular genres around: Action.

Top 5 Action games on PSP

(tie) Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories/Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Daxter

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

I'm lucky enough to own and have played all of the games in this particular list and trust me, they are all incredible gaming experiences and it's all the more impressive that they're on a portable. I do have to say that I think Ratchet & Clank is better than Daxter and GTA: VCS is better than GTA:LCS, but you really can't go wrong with any of these games. What did you think about these 5 games? What action games aren't on this list that you think every PSP owner should have?

That sounds quite bad on paper until you realize that multi-system games make up most of the list and the vast majority had a PSP iteration (like Family Guy and NFL Street 3). So while there may not be many PSP exclusives on the list, it did undoubtedly help several titles on the list reach their respective positions. I would be very curious to see the overall year's worth of just PSP games. I also can't help but hope that this week's Ratchet & Clank fairs as well as Daxter. What PSP game that didn't make the list do you wish was a top 100 seller?

Contrary to popular belief, the PSP has done quite well for itself, and some of the awards its received may surprise you. Here's a run-down of everything I've seen across the Internet:

Gamespot
Best Platformer: Daxter
Daxter beat out three Nintendo DS games, including New Super Mario Bros, thanks to its incredible technology, great personality and fantastic gameplay. "The gorgeous visuals and sound are wrapped in gameplay that is as polished and enjoyable as any full-fledged PlayStation 2 game. While not wholly original, Daxter sacrifices nothing and is simply an all-around amazing game."

Best PSP Game: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
"Portable Ops not only delivers some of the best presentation quality to date on the PSP, but makes some meaningful, interesting changes to the MGS formula. The resulting game is very well suited to playing on the go and also achieves a better balance of gameplay and storytelling than previous Metal Gear Solid games."

IGN
PSP Game of the Year: Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror
"What's most impressive is the depth of the action -- no second analog stick required! The control scheme enables you to do everything from operate a set of gadgets and diffuse bombs to snipe enemies and sift through different enemy types, all without slowing down the pace of the action."

Games Radar
WTF Award: LocoRoco
Games Radar certainly took a non-traditional approach to awards this year. "We also loved that you couldn't play this game without cracking a smile - the nonsense songs were insanely catchy, the bright colors and curvy shapes were captivating and the overall theme was almost relentlessly happy and fun. By forcing our jaded, stone-like faces to grin once again, LocoRoco earns its Platinum Chalice like few other games on this list."

The "It Doesn't Actually Suck" Award: PSP
Games Radar understands what we've known all the time: PSP is a great system. The plethora of excellent exclusive titles and fantastic PS2 ports has Games Radar and PSP fanboys everywhere asking "this is a bad system?"

Next Generation
23rd Best Game: LocoRoco
In its top 50 list, LocoRoco managed to break into 23rd place. "Eminently cute and weird as a $3 bill, LocoRoco had players controlling a world and tilting it in order for a smiling blobbish thing to collect goodies, get fatter, and eventually roll or drop past a finishing point. It was as if someone's strange drug-induced hallucination had come to life on the PSP, complete with a dandy soundtrack and a punishing difficulty factor."
What end of year awards did PSP earn? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Dec 2006 12:30:00 EST. Just in time for next week's infamous Black Thursday, IGN has released its 2006 Holiday Buyer's Guide and has also added their 10 choices for PSP games that should fill your stockings this Christmas. That's if you've been a good boy or girl, because if you've been bad, you get Family Guy.

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Daxter

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Killzone: Liberation

LocoRoco

Medal of Honor Heroes

Mercury Meltdown

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Tekken: Dark Resurrection

What, no Sega Genesis Collection or EA Replay? And while Daxter is a very good game, I don't think too many kids will go Nintendo 64 Kid crazy over getting a game released in March. Still, this is a pretty decent list, and I can't argue with it too much. If you're PSP shopping for someone, you might want to refer to this list.
IGN picks its top 10 PSP games for this holiday originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 14:00:00 EST. There were two games with the most nominations: Loco Roco for the PSP and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter for Xbox 360, both earning eight nominations each. The only other PSP-exclusive title to be nominated was Daxter. The team is famous for development on the technological marvel Daxter, and he had a lot of great things to say: "I think people were quite shocked to see what we pulled off on the PSP so far and our next game is already lightyears away from what Daxter achieved in terms of performance."

Other interesting tidbits:

If the PSP were running at full speed (333 MHz), Daxter would be able to hit 60 frames per second.

The team is now providing their engine, "Ready at Dawn Engine," as a middleware solution. A lot of studios seem interested in harnassing the power of the no-load-time engine. This is a very good thing.

The next game that the team is working on is a continuation of an already established franchise, akin to Daxter. Time to start guessing.

Described as a "real-time online networked game," littleelse can be gleamed from the patent. Supposedly Naughty Dog has an open position for a dual PS2/PS3 project that hasyet to be named, so draw your own conclusions on this one (at least until next week when we're almost sure to find outwhat exactly is going on).
Jak and Daxter making a comeback on the PS3?! originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 May 2006 15:00:00 EST. In a statement made to Gamesindustry.biz, Ready at Dawn president Didier Malenfant wasquoted saying, "...it bugs the hell out of me when you hear a lot of developers saying, 'We can't do this that waybecause...it doesn't have a second analog stick.'" He followed up this remark by calling any such claim made asnothing but an excuse, adding that the PSOne had a range of great titles to its name even before analog sticks wereimplemented.

Malenfant's statements, while in some small, nagging, paranoid way seems like a sneaky way todrum up press for their maiden PSP title Daxter, does make a valid, if adundantly obvious, point. Despite the PSP's current hardware limitations, game developers have an obligation to their own craft to find ways totake advantage of the strengths that the portable offers, instead of always exclaiming their shoulda wouldacouldas after their game hits a snag with gamers.

"I don't want to play sub-par games just becauseI'm on a handheld," breathed Malenfant. Amen to that.

Click through to see gameplay footage ofDaxter.
Continue reading Ready at Dawn readies a challenge for PSP devs

Ready at Dawn readies a challenge for PSP devs originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 Mar 2006 11:00:00 EST. I told the same thing to Alfred, my chauffeur, the other day. I said, "It's utterly ghastly that the PSP has so few platform games on it." To which he replied, "Yes, suh." I continued, "Death Jr. doesn't count because it was a terribly horrid game, so I've heard from the Montagues at the club last week." To which he replied, "Yes, suh."

After I woke up from my dream as a disgustingly rich, snobbish heir to a shipping empire, I noticed a review for Daxter in my RSS feed that exultingly shouted loud, raucous props to the technically-proficient title from Sony and developer Ready at Dawn Studios. The review cites the game's slick animation, "refined controls", great level design, graphics, and soundtrack as strong reasons to pick up Daxter. Never mind that the game is also a bit too easy and has a story about as complicated as a Top Model contestant's thought processes; fabulously wealthy shipping magnates like my dream-self should take the Lotus down to that downtown slum they call a shopping center and hobnob with the natives to get a copy of the game.

So says IGN's Chris Roper: "Daxter is simply an outstanding PSP game that brings back the old-school platform gaming the industry has been shying more and more away from. Sure, its story is kind of ridiculous and even a little boring, but the events that said story lead into are fantastic. From the great level design to the ultra-refined controls to the excellent production values, Daxter is a game every PSP gamer should check out."
"Daxter rocks" says IGN originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Mar 2006 14:00:00 EST. Sadly, reality (and nagging hunger pains) prevailed, and so we here at PSP Fanboy had toleave the games previewin' to the ever-present gaming gurus of IGN.

They only have good things to report onDaxter, the by-far PSP-exclusive spinoff of Naughty Dog's trademark platformer franchise, Jak andDaxter. The bi-pedaled smart-alecky sidekick gets his own game this time around, and IGN reports that the portableversion seems to suffer no shortcomings even when compared to its home console brethren. Considering that bad framerates and other acts of corner cutting seem to be commonplace in our expectations of handheld games, it's nice to beable to look forward to a blissfully full-bodied rendition of one of gaming's most beloved pairings.
Daxter previewed at CES originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jan 2006 23:30:00 EST.
