That's a huge saving on zombie killings: One of the game's achievements asks you to kill 72,000 zombies, so if you finish that achievement, you'll only have paid 1/50th (rounded off, of course) of a cent per kill! It's rare you find zombie killing that cheap these days, especially in this economy.

Plus, if you've already played Dead Rising 2, this is your chance to play that Off the Record version, which places the first Dead Rising's Frank West in the protagonist's chair. Being that it's the deal of the week, the offer lasts no more than seven days from now (and probably less, depending on when you're reading this), so if you want to take Capcom up on it, grab away.
Dead Rising 2 and Off the Record on sale this week at Capcom Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:00:00 EST. Before you get too excited, know that the '4 star' referenced in Amazon's deal of the day refers to user reviews. We're never going to to be comfortable with the kind of alchemy Gaikai is capable of. Capcom has partnered with the company to offer a demo of Dead Rising 2, right in your browser. You'll be so impressed you won't even mind it's a year late!

It's the actual game, inside a browser window. Being a demo, there are some restrictions: you can't save, and you can only play for 30 minutes. But it's still enough to give you a taste of the game, and to be really impressed with Gaikai.
Gaikai powers streaming Dead Rising 2 demo originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Nov 2011 02:00:00 EST. If all the talk of Halo Anniversary has put you in the mood for more modern fare, the Reach map packs are down to five bucks each this week. Alternately, if the release of Dead Rising 2: Off the Record gave you a hankerin' for Dead Rising 2 spinoffs, you'll find those half off next week, starting October 25. Dead Rising the first will also be On Demand for 25% off.

There's currently a "Shocktober" sale happening, including Castlevania Harmony of Despair for 600 Points ($7.50), and Alan Wake On Demand for just $10 more than retail. What a deal.

Racing fans can get a rolling staaaaaaaaaaaaaaart on Daytona USA on October 26, and check out the Toy Soldiers: Cold War "Napalm Pack" and A World of Keflings DLC on the same day. And in Avatar accessory news, it's finally happening on October 20.
You've bought all three Dead Rising 2 games to date, and you've pre-ordered the fourth. How on earth can you give Capcom more money for Dead Rising 2? Don't worry -- that's what DLC is for. Four downloadable costumes have been announced for Off the Record, allowing you to make Frank, the character people wanted so badly to return, almost unrecognizable.

Each costume comes with gameplay bonuses: Cyborg Frank has an electrical attack that stuns zombies; survivors run faster when following Frank in his firefighter outfit, and he can kick down doors and more effectively use water guns; the BBQ Chef outfit confers extra firepower to ketchup and mustard, and offers some kind of bonus when using explosives. And in the "Warrior Costume," players get 25% additional PP after every attack, and an exclusive combo with the practice sword and shield.

In Japan, these will all be sold separately for 160 Microsoft Points; release plans haven't been announced for North America yet, with the exception of the Warrior costume, which is a GameStop pre-order bonus.
Grill, extinguish, or terminate zombies with Dead Rising 2: Off the Record DLC costumes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 10:50:00 EST. We recall fondly last year's Dead Rising 2 panel, learning new information about weapons, plot and a Zombrex webseries, and it seems this year Capcom didn't want to mess with success. The Capcom panel revealed little new information about any of its titles, except for one game, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, an enhanced version of 2010's zombie sequel.

Pre-ordering Off the Record from Gamestop will give you cosplay clothing pack DLC, and anyone who played Dead Rising 2 can get Chuck Greene's jacket for Frank West to wear. Because the one thing we want when we're playing the revamp of a sequel whose second protagonist has been replaced by the original, is to see the original wearing the second's jacket. Finally, someone understands us.

Capcom also confirmed it is teaming up with IDW Publishing to release a graphic novel, Dead Rising: Road to Fortune, this October. Off the Record is scheduled to drop October 11, so that might be a good time for the comic to release too. Just sayin'.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record puts West in Greene's jacket, offers preorder DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 21:45:00 EST. To be a fan is a curious thing. To love something so much that it bleeds from its source into every facet of your life is a fascination we know all too well. And we've got the VHS tape of the Bubsy pilot to prove it!

That's why we're digging this custom Chuck Greene figure, the protagonist from Dead Rising 2 (and not Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, mind you). Created by Capcom-Unity frequenter Loosecollector Custom Figure Studio, it's clearly a product of passion; we appreciate all of the effort that went into mini-Chuck, even if his face is a bit off. Hey, we don't mean to poke fun, but we haven't even mentioned what's going on with the crotch -- er, damn.

Good ol' video games came through for Capcom over the twelve months ending March 31, 2011. The company reported "a history-making milestone" of five million-seller titles in the period, with Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (4.6 million units shipped) leading the pack. Additionally, Dead Rising 2 (2.2M units), Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (2M units), Super Street Fighter IV (1.6M units) and Lost Planet 2 (1.5M units) racked up high shipment numbers, and each surpassed the million-mark in pure sales.

In all, net sales in Capcom's "Consumer Online Games" division increased 60.8 percent over the previous fiscal year to ¥70.3 billion (about $873 million). But the sales success of so-called "major titles" wasn't the only contributing factor in Capcom's record bottom line for a fiscal year, which showed a net income increase of 257.6 percent over the previous year to ¥7.75 billion -- roughly $96.3 million in profit!

Despite reported losses of ¥1.45 billion due to restructuring and another ¥105 million filed under "disaster" -- the Great East Japan Earthquake knocked out ten of Capcom's arcades -- all of the company's business units recorded operating income gains for the year. Notably, the "Mobile Contents" division enjoyed some highlights, with downloads of The Smurfs' Village Facebook game exceeding expectations "by far" and the Japan-only iPhone version of Ghost Trick faring "well."

Capcom tempered its jubilation, however, noting that the forecast for the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2012) calls for "lower sales and earnings." The company anticipates "immeasurable economic losses" in Japan due to the earthquake and its aftermath, as well as a "downturn in consumer confidence" in the game industry at large -- not to mention Capcom's weaker offering of AAA titles this year. Dead Rising 2 ... again?

"We will focus more than ever before on our global operations as the environment surrounding the industry rapidly changes," Capcom said, observing that "the rise of social games [is] fueling the growth of new competitors in the industry."
Capcom profits soar with help from record AAA game sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 May 2011 11:30:00 EST. Did you ever wonder what Dead Rising 2 would have been like had it been Frank West hitting zombies with oars, instead of Chuck Greene? Well, start wondering now, so your new curiosity can be sated by Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, Capcom's remake of a game that came out last year.

Set in a "what-if" scenario, Off the Record puts Frank West in Fortune City in Chuck's place, with new missions, new enemies, new weapons and "a brand new Fortune City attraction to explore." The update also features "enhancements to elements such as the save system and the co-op experience."

But mostly, it's an "enhancement" to the amount of money Capcom can get out of Dead Rising 2. Between this and the XBLA games, this is the fourth game to bear the title Dead Rising 2. It'll be out on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in the fall.

Gallery: Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

Continue reading Dead Rising 2: Off the Record puts Frank West in Chuck Greene's shoes

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record puts Frank West in Chuck Greene's shoes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Apr 2011 11:04:00 EST. Considering the volume of fan-made game trailers cast onto the YouTubes every day, we're guessing MI6's "Making the Cut" competition will bring in a number of qualified entrants. Here's the deal: Any college student who makes a "non-traditional" trailer for either Halo: Reach or Dead Rising 2 can send said trailer into MI6 (the marketing agency, not the branch of British intelligence services), which could be chosen to receive an award during the annual MI6 Video Game Marketing Conference and Awards Show.

Participants are encouraged to use their imagination, but must also incorporate gameplay footage provided by the games' developers. Interested collegiate filmmakers can check out the rules and regulations or register for the contest on the official site. At this time last year, Capcom was thanking Monster Hunter Tri for helping the company boost its 2009 year-end financial results. Today, Capcom heralded the monstrous shipments of Monster Hunter Freedom 3 that closed out 2010 and propelled the publisher's profits up nearly 300 percent in a nine-month period. During the first three quarters of its current fiscal year (which ends March 31, 2011), Capcom netted ¥6.836 billion (nearly $84 million) in profit -- up from just ¥1.731 the same period the year before. Sales of "Consumer Online Games" (what we call "video games," excluding mobile content) were the driving force, totaling ¥54.057 billion ($663.6 million) -- a bit more than 76 percent of total sales for the business, which includes arcade and amusement ("slot machine") operations.

Joining Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (currently only available in Japan), Capcom noted three additional "million-sellers" in the nine-month period (April-December 2010): Dead Rising 2 (with more than 2 million units shipped); Super Street Fighter IV (1.6 million units shipped "mainly to Europe and the United States"); and Lost Planet 2 (1.5 million sold -- "though the figure was less than [the] projected shipment").

During the period, Capcom also worked on "rebuilding the development departments comprising our core competence" in an effort to shift greater resources to its mobile operations, with specific focus on social gaming. Sales of "Mobile Contents" for the three quarters amounted to a modest ¥2.383 billion ($29.25 million), led by a bevy of iPhone releases and some "positive surprises," including the popularity of The Smurfs' Village on Facebook. And Capcom hasn't even accounted for all the MaXplosion press in January yet!
Monster Hunter again captures 'center stage' in Capcom 9-month fiscal report originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Feb 2011 11:49:00 EST. If you picked up Dead Rising 2: Case West and are having a problem getting the "Handy Man" Achievement, which requires building all the new weapons in the DLC, it may not necessarily be that you're missing something. XBLA Fans, in its "DR2: Case West Weapons Combo Guide," notes that the "Handy Man" requires players build only the seven new weapons in the game. Apparently, if you create any other weapons before those seven, you'll have to move the save file to another device or delete it.
Capcom's XBLA-exclusive Dead Rising 2 epilogue, Case West, is available now on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The standalone DLC has Chuck Greene teaming up with everyone's favorite photojournalist, Frank West, for 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

The previous standalone downloadable game, Case Zero, debuted at $5. For an extra $5 on top of the expected time-crunching, item-combining gameplay, Case West adds a new setting, co-op gameplay and the return of faaaantastic photography. It'll certainly be interesting to see how Case West's sales do in comparison to Case Zero, the latter of which was deemed the "most dynamic sales weapon" by Capcom shortly before surpassing 600,000 downloads.
Capcom is calling for your attention in Fortune City on December 27. That's when the XBLA-exclusive Dead Rising 2 epilogue, Case West, will slide down the virtual chimney and appear under the Xbox Live Marketplace-shaped tree. It's priced at 800 Microsoft Points.

For that price, you'll get more than just a suddenly sleazier-looking version of Dead Rising's protagonist (it must be those shades). Case West is a new scenario set inside the "Phenotrans Facility," offering co-op gameplay and, of course, the return of the photography mechanic.

Open up Dead Rising 2: Case West on Dec. 27 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. Fans of fictional, war-covering photojournalists rejoice, for Capcom has announced that the Xbox exclusive Dead Rising 2: Case West is slated to arrive "next month." As of this writing, it's just barely still November, so it would seem Frank West will return to Dead Rising in time for Christmas. In-game photography will also be making a comeback; presumably, nabbing erotic photos should be much easier this time around.

Unfortunately, Capcom still hasn't announced a price. For now, you'll just have to settle for the new screens in the gallery below.

Update 2: Following up with Capcom, a representative informed Joystiq: "Case West will be a standalone just like Case Zero."

Update: Find a Case West trailer after the break.
Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, the "most dynamic sales weapon" publisher Capcom has ever had, has surpassed the 600,000-downloaded mark. The $5 XBLA-exclusive sold another 100,000 units in October, topping the Xbox Live Arcade sales chart and apparently making it the "fastest selling" XBLA game of the year.

The full-bodied demo/prequel to Dead Rising 2 has been an incredible success, selling nearly a half million units in its first two weeks back in early September. As for Case Zero's sales impact on the full game, it certainly didn't hurt the sequel, as Capcom announced in late October it had shipped over 2 million units of the game to retailers.
Dead Rising 2: Case Zero surpasses 600K download mark originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 22:45:00 EST.
Now, Amazon is delivering the Avatar duds.

Two readers have written in to tell us that they've received emails from Amazon, containing the codes for the Dead Rising 2-themed Avatar jackets and Servbot heads originally promised with pre-orders of the game. So if you see one of your friends' Avatars wearing a giant Servbot face, you can be sure their real face will be holding a similar expression, after having just been customer served.

Why is that good news? Because who cares about Avatar clothes (even Servbot heads), when the replacement is half off a pre-order of Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Amazon sent out emails to pre-orderers, offering 50% off of pre-orders of the fighter as a conciliatory gesture for the now-canceled Avatar finery. Combined with the $10 credit offered when the codes for the clothing were merely delayed, that's a $20 copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 3! We'd gladly not take any Avatar clothing in exchange for those kinds of savings.
Amazon trades canceled Dead Rising 2 Avatar clothes for half off Marvel vs. Capcom 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:40:00 EST. Capcom's investor Q&A session for its most recent financial report sheds a bit more light on the recent departure of Keiji Inafune. When asked to explain why Inafune left the company, Capcom said it was "thinking about radical reforms in our R&D operations in response to the rapid changes taking place in our markets." At the outset of these reforms, Inafune expressed a desire to remain "an independent creator" and "Capcom accepted this request." A replacement for Inafune wasn't named, though Capcom will soon hold meetings "to reach decisions concerning the direction of our development activities and other important items."

In another interesting bit of the Q&A, Capcom stated that it may acquire more developers in the future, similar to the recent acquisition of Blue Castle Games following its completion of Dead Rising 2. While the company has no specific acquisitions planned at this time, it says it would consider acquiring a development partner if "an acquisition would better enable Capcom and the partner to utilize their strengths and produce benefits for both companies."

Of course, to hear Inafune tell it, Western developers like Blue Castle are Capcom's only hope for success. Inafune said as much in a recent interview, in which he stated that Western developers are "far and away more passionate" than their Japanese counterparts.
Capcom responds to Inafune resignation, comments on future acquisitions originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune has blasted the Japanese gaming industry in an interview conducted by 4Gamer.net right after his recent exit from Capcom, and translated by a NeoGAF forum user. In it, Inafune says that Japanese publishers are "making developers into salarymen" and that he could no longer be the designer he wanted to be at Capcom. Inafune also revealed that he would have liked to have worked alongside his former employer after the split, perhaps as an outside contractor, but was told, "That won't be necessary."

Inafune is quite honest in the interview, commenting that Capcom won't survive using its current employment structure, and that the company will have to pare down its internal workforce and commission Western developers to help make its games in the future. Western developers, says Inafune, are "far and away more passionate" than Capcom's internal teams -- and technically superior, as well.

As for what's next, it sounds like Inafune is planning to start his own company. He says he wants to "do business" and be a "further driving force" in the Japanese games industry. It's a pretty epic interview; you can read it in its entirety at the via link.
Inafune talks about Capcom split, wants to be 'driving force' in game development originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Nov 2010 21:35:00 EST. Capcom is gettin' by, as the publisher announced that sales were up 4.7 percent, with net profit down 39.9 percent, during the first half of fiscal year 2010, ending March 31, 2011. The publisher also announced that Jun Takeuchi can now add "Corporate Officer" to his already outrageous title of "Deputy Head of Consumer Games R&D Division and General Manager of R&D Production Department." Think that title sounds serious in English? Check it out in Japanese: 執 行 役 員CS開発副統括 兼 制作部長.

Net sales reached ¥40.7 billion ($501M) during the six-month period ending September 30, 2010, thanks to the release of Dead Rising 2 and continued sales of Super Street Fighter IV. The publisher also stated that Sengoku BASARA: Samurai Heroes and Monster Hunter spin-off Monhan Nikki Pokapoka Airu Mura shipped over 500 thousands units apiece. These titles helped push that 4.7% increase in sales over the same period last year. Overall, Capcom states sales were stagnant due to the late release of Dead Rising 2 and the "substantial underperformance" of Lost Planet 2.

Due to the sales issues, net profit for the first half was ¥1.7 billion ($22 million, down 39.9%). The company forecasts it'll end the fiscal year next March with sales of ¥91 billion ($1.1 billion) and a net income of ¥6.5 billion ($80 million).
Capcom first-half FY 2010 finds sales up, profits down originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST. Capcom announced this morning that Dead Rising 2 has shipped over two million units globally, making it more successful than the original zombie survival sandbox. The company also stated that the Dead Rising franchise has shipped over four million units globally. That math likely entails the couple million copies from the sequel, the "million-plus" from the original Dead Rising, and ... oh boy, whatever Dead Rising: Chop Till you Drop shipped. It's unclear if Capcom's "most dynamic sales weapon" ever, Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, would be included in there -- considering it didn't "ship" so much as "sell" half a million units on Xbox Live Arcade.

The publisher also announced that its acquisition of Blue Castle Games was approved by Canadian authorities. The studio will now be known as Capcom Game Studio Vancouver. Will CGSV be entrusted with other Capcom franchises, or will it remain in the company of the living dead?
Dead Rising 2 ships 2 million, Blue Castle Games renamed originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 10:10:00 EST. The agency's new reticence means we have no idea how hardware did in September -- except for the Xbox 360, which was at the top of the charts with 483,989 units sold. The NPD does report that at $383 million, total hardware sales are down 19 percent year-over-year.

We have a bit more information about software, but the format has changed for that as well -- instead of each individual version of a game (on each platform, for example) counting as one game on the list, they've been totaled. So Madden NFL 11 occupies one slot on the top ten this month instead of two.

Halo: Reach would have done well regardless of this change (it's at #1, after all, and on only one platform) but now we see games on the top ten that might have been muscled out by the Maddens -- like Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Metroid: Other M. Microsoft, never one to ignore a success story, blasted out Halo: Reach's first-month sales numbers: 3.3 million units. It notes that Reach is "only the third game this generation to surpass 3 million unit sales in the first month." The first? Yup, Halo 3.

Update: Hardware sales figures can be found here.

Embrace change after the break.
Continue reading September NPD: Hardware down, but Halo Reaches upward

September NPD: Hardware down, but Halo Reaches upward originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 18:58:00 EST. FIFA 11 spent a second week atop the UK all formats chart this week, holding off Pro Evolution Soccer 2011's premiere in second, despite a 63 percent drop in sales. Chart-Track states that FIFA 11's launch last week was 10 times that of Konami's footie franchise and that this is the first time Pro Evo hasn't debuted in the top spot since the original game kicked off in 2001. Dead Rising 2 shambles along, rounding out the top three.

With competition so brutal during this time, it's good to see that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Enslaved debuted at the sixth and seventh spots, respectively. Hopefully both of these quality games can hang onto a spot in the top ten for more than a couple weeks.

As much as we wish the best for those games, we're not expecting either title to be stamina-infused like Just Dance, which moved up three spots this week to ninth place, and has a sequel coming out next week. Place your bets now if Just Dance 2 will glide across the UK charts to best FIFA 11. Check out the UK's top ten after the break.
Continue reading FIFA fights off Pro Evo on UK charts; Castlevania, Enslaved debut in top 10

FIFA fights off Pro Evo on UK charts; Castlevania, Enslaved debut in top 10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 00:00:00 EST. The Dead Rising 2 pre-order bonus DLC will be made available for purchase on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace over the coming weeks. Each pack will cost $1.99 (or 160 Microsoft Points). Bonuses in the packs can be combined to form the ultimate Chuck and include:

Psychopath Pack (Oct. 12) -- Bonus when using iconic horror movie weapons (chainsaws, cleavers, axes)

Soldier of Fortune Pack (Oct. 19) -- Doubles ammo, increases shooting and headshot accuracy; special bullet spray attack when using automatics

Sports Pack (Oct. 26) -- Golf balls, basketballs, etc. bounce more before stopping. Chuck will also "earn more from gambling, gain more health while eating and drinking and not get sick from drinking too much." So, essentially, he's your fun uncle.

Ninja Pack (Nov. 2) -- Stealth mode requires zombies be closer to detect presence. Throwing items do more damage and are tossed faster; bonuses with sword weapon

So, zombies better watch out when Chuck's camouflaged with a viking helmet and ninja slippers ... or they can just laugh. Wait -- do zombies laugh or just sorta joyfully gurgle?
Dead Rising 2 offering Psycho, Ninja, Sports, Soldier DLC to all, for a price originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. Like a bowl of comforting chicken soup, FIFA 11 premiered at the top of the UK all formats chart. According to Chart-Track, the game had the third-largest debut in UK chart history, unseating previous bronze holder FIFA 10's first week by 21 percent in unit sales and 36 percent in revenue. Chart-Track also states that the top two premieres belong to CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV.

We followed up with Chart-Track because this information doesn't exactly jive with details it provided a couple weeks back. At the time, FIFA 10 wasn't even mentioned in the top three and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was in the third spot. Turns out there are two charts the company is tracking, one that's "individual formats" and the other is "combined formats." We've placed both after the break for clarification.

Surprise winner last week, F1 2010, lost its pole position and slipped into second. Dead Rising 2 maintained its third place with the help of a chainsaw paddle, while Halo: Reach began its slow fall down the charts, slipping two spots to fourth. Moving up a spot and rounding out the top five is Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, showing the rhythm genre has life in the UK beyond Just Dance (#12). Despite some promising sales numbers in Japan from Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes and the Japan-only Monster Hunter spinoff Monhan Nikki Pokapoka Airu Mura, the publisher is expecting 91 billion yen in net sales this year ($1.09 billion) instead of the previous estimate of 95 billion ($1.14 billion).

Contributing factors to the falling forecast include the rising yen vs. the dollar and euro, the one-month delay of Dead Rising 2, and continued fallout from underperformance of Lost Planet 2. On a happier note, this reduced forecast is still much better than the 66.84 billion yen Capcom pulled in last year.
Capcom reduces fiscal forecast due to Lost Planet 2 shortfall originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 13:15:00 EST. In our review of Dead Rising 2 we said the game "doesn't stray from the core principle of the original." That's a running theme in many reviews. If you thought the original Dead Rising just needed more of everything (pus-filled zombie warts and all), with the addition of a weapon creation system, it seems your purchase of the game is good to go.
Its assured grasp of what the game is and what it isn't is worth celebrating. The harder edges of the first game have been softened a little, no doubt thanks to the involvement of a Western studio."

Giant Bomb (3/5): "But it's the other stuff--the still messy survivor AI and poorly built boss battles--that really mars the Dead Rising 2 experience. It's not an impossible game to love, but as with the first game, you'll have to look past a lot of blemishes to find happiness."

Reviewer's guides are not uncommon for new games, but Capcom gets an A+ for the effort put into the guide for Dead Rising 2. "ZQ" is a magazine that not only offers hints and tips for a trek through Fortune City, but goes the extra mile with flavor text and advertisements that make the zombie-infested world feel entirely real.
Continue reading Dead Rising 2's ZQ magazine lets you 'stay sharp, die smart'

Dead Rising 2's ZQ magazine lets you 'stay sharp, die smart' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 14:10:00 EST. Sifting through my inventory, I scroll past flaming boxing gloves, a sledgehammer duct-taped to a pair of fire axes, a makeshift lightsaber (two of those, actually) and a box of french fries. Four survivors -- two of whom I've armed with assault rifles -- are trailing behind me, weaving through the zombie-free path I've literally carved for them. Soon I bring them all back to safety, netting me a cool 168,000 Prestige Points. I level up. Twice. I barely notice, since I can't stop wondering how to combine this wheelchair with the lawn mower I found in hardware.
It would seem the long-awaited return of Formula One racing to high-def consoles is more welcome than a doomed planet, a zombie-filled casino and even civilization itself, with Codemasters' F1 2010 taking the pole position on the UK charts last week. According to Chart-Track, the game didn't just take first -- it lapped the competition, beating sales of Halo: Reach and Dead Rising 2 combined.

Reach lost its grasp on first, with an 80 percent drop in sales, while Dead Rising 2 premiered in third. Civilization 5 debuted in fourth, though it's worth noting that Chart-Track (like NPD in the States) doesn't track those nebulous digital distribution sales. Rounding out the top five is Sony Move's apparent breakout title: Sports Champions.

Other premieres on the charts this week were Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock at sixth and Final Fantasy XIV in tenth.
