Currently marked down to $39.99 on the retailer's site, using the coupon code "GFDMAR20" - which earns you 20% off PC titles - will slice off an additional $8 off at checkout.<br /><br />Because this is a digital PC version, remember that you'll need an EA Origin account and your PC will need to be connected to the Internet as you play. Still, there's no cheaper way to get into the game our reviewer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/dead-space-3-review/">called</a> "an exciting, shocking and mammoth adventure through the ghostly, unvarnished segments of space."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/04/dead-space-3-price-sliced-to-32-on-pc-from-gamefly/">Dead Space 3 price sliced to $32 on PC from GameFly</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Mar 2013 22:00:00 EST. His weapons were that of an engineer, though they served Isaac well enough in strategically dismembering the ghouls that came creeping at him. The events of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> took Isaac on a similar mission, albeit through an enormous space colony known as "The Sprawl." Isaac once again battled creepy necromorphs, all in the name of survival.<br /><br />Despite what you've seen of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-3"><em>Dead Space 3</em></a> thus far - the action-heavy, co-op sequences <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/08/dead-space-3-co-op-meets-carver/">from E3</a>, for example - Isaac is as much "the reluctant participant" as ever. Visceral Games executive producer Steve Papoutsis explained as much to us in a recent interview. "He by no means is a vigilante for hire or any nonsense like that," Papoutsis said. "That's not what's going on with Isaac. And I don't want to get into the details too much 'cause that would kinda spoil the fun for folks, but let's just say after the events of The Sprawl - which was, as you may or may know if you played it, a massive disaster - he's kind of laying low. And he kind of wants to be left alone."<br /><br />Papoutsis didn't speak to specifics of the game's intro - which, according to previous precedent, should be <em>insane</em> - but he was quick to stifle any idea that Isaac is on the offensive in <em>Dead Space 3</em>. "The events that kind of thrust him into action in <em>Dead Space 3</em> will reveal themselves when people play the game, but by no means is he a willing participant in the story that's gonna unfold." It's unclear if Clarke's co-op buddy, Carver, plays into that "thrust," but the fact that he's a gun-toting government official can't hurt.<br /><br />As for whether this is Isaac's last spin as a starring character in a Dead Space game, Papoutsis was less specific. "We didn't set out to make a trilogy," he said. "We would love to create many more Dead Space games, there's a lot of stories to tell of the Dead Space universe." He allowed one teensy nugget to slip through. "With <em>Dead Space 3</em>, it's definitely Isaac's story and we're trying to bring answers to this story. There's a lot of questions that have come in <em>Dead Space 1</em> and <em>2</em>, and with <em>Dead Space 3</em> we really wanna answer a lot of questions."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/25/dead-space-3s-isaac-clarke-as-the-reluctant-participant/">Dead Space 3's Isaac Clarke as 'the reluctant participant'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 12:30:00 EST. Steam has taken the ol' plasma cutter to the price of the Dead Space series, offering one monster of a deal. This weekend you can pick up -- using telekinesis, preferably -- the original <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a> or <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> for five bucks each. You can use the money you've saved for some fresh underpants. You'll need them.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/12/dead-space-1-and-2-sliced-down-to-5-on-steam-this-weekend/">Dead Space 1 and 2 sliced down to $5 on Steam this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 23:59:00 EST. You've probably heard of a few of the games discounted in today's installment of the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/">Steam holiday sale</a>. You know, <em>Machinarium</em>? <em>Dungeon Defenders</em>? <em>Assassin's Creed 1</em>, <em>2</em>, <em>Brotherhood</em> and <em>Revelations</em>? A bunch of <em>Tomb Raiders</em>? <em>Dead Spaces</em>? You ... you have heard of those, right?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/28/todays-steam-holiday-sale-discounts-dead-space-2-tomb-raider/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's Steam holiday sale discounts Dead Space 2, Tomb Raider, more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/28/todays-steam-holiday-sale-discounts-dead-space-2-tomb-raider/">Today's Steam holiday sale discounts Dead Space 2, Tomb Raider, more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 17:45:00 EST. You'll forgive us, but we're banking on the concept of Aunt Eileen stuffing your stocking with iTunes gift cards rather than, say, a Zune Marketplace one. Perhaps that depends on if you've been naughty or nice? We're not quite sure how this holiday stuff works, but we're trying our best here.<br />
<br />
Anyway, below the break we've compiled another year's worth of great games on both iPhone and iPad platforms that we hope you'll love as well. Even if you don't get those gift cards, these games should still be affordable -- even after buying all those presents. Good luck with the relatives!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/2011-holiday-buyers-guide-ios/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2011 Holiday Buyers Guide: iOS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/2011-holiday-buyers-guide-ios/">2011 Holiday Buyers Guide: iOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Dec 2011 19:00:00 EST. Kotaku cites an anonymous "insider" on two new rumors regarding two of Electronic Arts' biggest "new" franchises: Dead Space and Dragon Age. Though <em>Dead Space 2</em> managed to ship over <a href="http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=594196">two million units</a> in its first six months of release, EA wants to "make the series bigger and better," says the insider. The plan: A Dead Space first-person shooter, a Dead Space "flight game" and, lastly, a Dead Space "Uncharted-like game."<br />
<br />
Apparently, that recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/peter-moore-now-coo-at-ea-more-execs-change-jobs/">EA management shift</a> in August "brought in new brass that nearly killed off <em>Dead Space 3</em>," if this insider is to be believed. But it's not dead and, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/rumor-dead-space-3-plot-details-leaked/">previous rumors suggested</a>, <em>Dead Space 3</em> takes place on ice planet Tau Volantis and will feature co-op.<br />
<br />
Now for Dragon Age ... this one is good. Kotaku's insider says that, like BioWare's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect-3,multiplayer">other major RPG brand</a>, Dragon Age will get a multiplayer offering, reportedly powered by DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. This could be part of a future Dragon Age installment, let's call it <em>Dragon Age 3</em>, or a separate downloadable title; the gameplay will be arena-based, and feature both PvE and PvP combat, as well as ... dragons. Because Dragon Age, and all that.<br />
<br />
Here's our advice, EA: If you want to increase awareness of the Dead Space brand, making games that aren't like <em>Dead Space</em> seems like a poor strategy. Also, a flight game? Are you trying not to sell games? And the problem with Dragon Age isn't a lack of multiplayer. The (extraordinarily) fast turnaround on <em>Dragon Age 2</em> resulted in a rushed RPG that was dwarfed (and, frankly, embarrassed) by productions like <em>The Witcher 2</em> and <em>Skyrim</em> (which managed to ship a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/16/bethesda-ships-7-million-skyrim-launch-units-expects-500-milli/">not-so-shabby seven million units</a> at launch).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/rumors-dead-space-expands-into-fps-and-flight-dragon-age-goes/">Rumors: Dead Space expands into FPS and flight, Dragon Age goes multiplayer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 12:30:00 EST. EA is offering four big mobile titles for free for all the <em>tens </em>of people who own Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xperia-play/">Xperia Play</a>: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space">Dead Space</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-bad-company-2">Battlefield: Bad Company 2</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-shift">Need for Speed: Shift</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit">Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit</a></em>. The offer runs through Jan. 15, 2012, meaning you still have time to throw the PlayStation Phone on your holiday wish list and snag these suckers for free. If it helps, think of it as getting four games with a handy smartphone case thrown in for free.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/09/xperia-play-makes-itself-more-enticing-for-the-holidays-with-fou/">Xperia Play makes itself more enticing for the holidays with four free EA games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 19:30:00 EST. There's not much surprise to be found in the rumored existence of another Dead Space sequel, is there? According to purported plot details published by <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/26/dead-space-3-takes-place-on-a-frozen-planet-first-details-inside/">Siliconera</a>, however, you're in for less of a shock and more of a creeping, unshakeable chill. (<em>Dead Space 3</em> has not been announced, so beware of potential spoilers beyond this point.)<br />
<br />
According to the site's mole, <em>Dead Space 3</em> dumps perennially imperiled engineer Isaac Clarke on Tau Volantis, a frigid planet blanketed in snowstorms. Donning a snowsuit (with temperature indicated inconveniently on the back?), he attempts to locate lost friends and other signs of humanity. And we can't imagine a bit of unpleasant weather deterring those despicable necromorphs.<br />
<br />
The change of location (if accurately reported) sounds intriguing, though we won't hear more until EA decides to announce <em>Dead Space 3</em> officially. Last we heard, <em>Dead Space 2</em> had shipped over 2 million copies -- enough to be deemed one of EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/riccitiello-says-it-would-take-dead-space-3-for-franchise-to-p/">"strong, growing franchises</a>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/26/rumor-dead-space-3-plot-details-leaked/">Rumor: Dead Space 3 plot details leaked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 18:45:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/19/dead-space-lands-on-blackberry-playbook-and-android-well-xp/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/the-mines-1_530x350.png" style="width: 530px; height: 349px; " /></a></div>
In this <a href="http://www.marco.org/2011/08/12/tablets-vs-obscure-video-game-consoles">chart of non-iPad tablets compared to "obscure" video game consoles</a>, the BlackBerry PlayBook is somewhere between the Philips CDi and the Atari Jaguar. That is to say, the PlayBook hasn't set the world, or really much of anything, on fire. Google's Android OS, on the other hand, is increasingly taking over the mobile space (albeit not the tablet space, where all Android tablets combined are somewhere between the 3DO and the Virtual Boy).<br />
<br />
While gaming on Android is still something of a challenge, thanks to a fragmented install base, unique platforms, and multiple stores, that hasn't stopped EA from giving it the ol' college effort. So Xperia Play owners can go to EA's own Flexion Android Store to download EA Mobile and IronMonkey Studios' excellent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/dead-space-iphone-preview-small-scale-scares/"><em>Dead Space</em></a> mobile game -- easy! We weren't able to confirm that ourselves, not owning an Xperia Play, so we've put a word into EA for confirmation.<br />
<br />
But EA didn't stop there - it's also ported <em>Dead Space</em> to the PlayBook. Premiering today for the same $9.99 price as its far more popular iPad-based twin, the PlayBook audience is getting one of mobile gaming's most successful "core" games. And yes, it's a small audience (smaller than the Xperia Play?) but if EA plans to continue its mobile dominance, it helps to be everywhere.<br />
<br />

The EA Store has taken a plasma cutter to the price of the <em>Dead Space</em> series. The downloadable PC versions of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> can be had for $12 and $24, respectively. EA is apparently making an annual affair out of its massive mobile games sale, dubbing the event "The Bitten Bunny" and dropping prices of iOS and Android games across the board. Nearly 30 games, including big names like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/nba-jam"><em>NBA Jam</em></a>, are marked down to 99 cents for iOS.<br />
<br />
Eight Android games are also dropped by 50 percent (or more), so if you've been waiting to grab <em>Worms</em> for Android, <em>now</em> is the time (and $2 is the price). A full list of sale items is available for each platform <a href="http://www.eamobile.com/sale?cid=eacomNews">right here</a>.<br />
<br />
The sale goes through Easter Sunday, after which the Easter Bunny will hop back into his hiding spot for another year. It'll be the least money you've paid for <em>Tetris</em> this year -- so what if it's the dozenth time you've bought it?<br />
<br />

A series of job openings in EA Montreal's Visceral Games division point unsurprisingly to ongoing projects associated with the studio's homegrown <em>Army of Two</em> franchise, as well as for <em>Dead Space</em>. Positions for a <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000Ks37AAC">senior producer</a>, <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000miiyAAA">art director</a> and <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000pT0VAAU">lead environmental artist</a> for <em>Army of Two</em> have been posted on the <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/advanced.do?q=&amp;globalRegionID=a1W500000004CCgEAM&amp;locationID=a1W500000004CAjEAM&amp;jobCategoryID=">EA jobs site</a>, in addition to a number of non-franchise-specific roles.<br />
<br />
Also of note, the studio is looking for a <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000pQdPAAU">senior development director</a> for the <em>Dead Space</em> franchise, in addition to a <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000sY4NAAU">lead writer</a> (in English) and <a href="https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000000t7SfAAI">senior AI programmer</a> for a "new action adventure IP."<br />
<br />
The EA Montreal location includes Visceral Games Montreal, EA Mobile, BioWare Montreal and other groups. The now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/18/next-command-and-conquer-in-production-under-visceral-label/">Visceral-branded</a> studio is best known for its pair of <em>Army of Two</em> games, which have sold <em>millions</em> -- fist bump! -- despite mixed critical reception. Additionally, the Montreal studio collaborated with EA's Redwood Shores outfit to develop <em>Dead Space 2</em>.<br />
<br />
While EA has made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/riccitiello-says-it-would-take-dead-space-3-for-franchise-to-p/">no official statement</a> about new iterations of these franchises, we clearly haven't seen the last of them. And you can put your bro on that!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/visceral-montreal-studio-staffing-up-for-army-of-two-dead-space/">Visceral Montreal studio staffing up for Army of Two, Dead Space franchises</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 20:00:00 EST. Many of EA's for iPhone and iPod touch are discounted this weekend. The big deal is that the well-received iPhone version of <em>Dead Space</em> had a couple bucks strategically dismembered from its regular price and is available now for $5.<br />
<br />
Other discounted titles include <em>Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12,The Sims 3, SimCity Deluxe, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 </em>and<em> The Simpsons Arcade</em>. All the titles are $5 or less, with <em>SimCity</em> and <em>Simpsons</em> being only $1.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/09/ea-iphone-spring-sale-includes-dead-space-for-5/">EA iPhone spring sale includes Dead Space for $5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 02:00:00 EST. Back in 2009, D.J. Caruso <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/dead-space-being-directed-with-an-eagle-eye-by-d-j-caruso/">signed on</a> to direct <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a>. Since then, we haven't heard much about the project -- a piece here; a small morsel there. An interview with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTRyw2OM0-U&amp;hd=1&amp;t=1m26s">AreaGames</a> during a German press tour for <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1464540/">I Am Number Four</a>, Caruso's latest film, brings news that a big-screen adaptation of <em>Dead Space</em> is still very alive.<br />
<br />
"We're working on the story," Caruso said in the video interview, which you can see for yourself just past the break. "We had one attempt of trying to do a prequel, but the story didn't quite work out as well as we wanted it to. But if we can capture how -- I don't want to say, I guess, how scary or horrifying it would be to play that game because it's really, really fantastic. It'd be fun to make that into a movie." And we wouldn't mind seeing it, granted none of those crazy-scary Necromorph children from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> make their way into the film.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/21/dead-space-movie-still-in-production-caruso-toyed-around-with/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space movie still in production, Caruso toyed around with 'a prequel'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/21/dead-space-movie-still-in-production-caruso-toyed-around-with/">Dead Space movie still in production, Caruso toyed around with 'a prequel'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 19:31:00 EST. With the iPad 2 launch tomorrow, it's time for publishers to carpe diem on the App Store. EA is going big with mega-discounts on every one of its iPad compatible titles. Like <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/10/lots-of-ipad-games-go-on-sale-this-weekend-likely-more-to-come/">TUAW</a> points out, focus those plasma cutter devices at <em>Dead Space</em> and leap for <em>Mirror's Edge</em>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://appadvice.com/appnn/2011/03/flight-control-hd-dead-space-ipad-sale-anticipation-ipad-2-launch/">AppAdvice</a> has a solid list up of this weekend's sales, which includes Firemint's <em>Flight Control HD</em>. If you do pick up an iPad 2 this weekend, or are just wandering through the App Store with your iPad 1 this weekend, keep an eye out for more deals.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/ea-and-other-publishers-unleash-app-sale-for-ipad-2-launch/">EA and other publishers unleash app sale for iPad 2 launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 20:30:00 EST. In its continuing series on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/bungie-on-developing-the-character-of-master-chief/">profiling character design</a> in games, <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/be-yourself-or-not-dead-space/">IndustryGamers</a> has posted a chat with Visceral creative director Wright Bagwell on <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> protagonist, Isaac Clarke. According to Bagwell, it was very important from the beginning that <em>Dead Space</em>'s main character was a "normal everyday kind of guy" and that he made logical sense in the game's universe.<br />
<br />
"We didn't want you to play a superhero, and we didn't want your character to be a space marine as well," said Bagwell, which led to the idea of an engineer sent to help an abandoned space ship. Not only did this help players identify with Isaac, but it also gave him "a lot of interesting things to do in this world as well."<br />
<br />
<em>Dead Space 2</em> presented new challenges, thanks to Isaac's newfound ability to speak. According to Bagwell, the team at Visceral tried to prevent Isaac's dialogue from pulling players out of the game. Thus the team "focused a lot on having him say things that [the team] thought were situationally appropriate." Speaking from personal experience, we can certainly identify with Isaac hurling expletives during the more shocking moments in <em>Dead Space 2</em>.<br />
<br />
Head over to <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/be-yourself-or-not-dead-space/">IndustryGamers</a> to read the whole piece, which includes insights on the characters of Nicole and Stross, as well as Visceral's insistence on using <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/03/dead-space-2-ring-around-the-rosie-trailer/">creepy nursery rhymes</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/visceral-on-the-believability-of-dead-spaces-isaac-clarke/">Visceral on the believability of Dead Space's Isaac Clarke</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 01:00:00 EST. <span class="text_article_body">EA CEO John Riccitiello believes that the <em>Dead Space</em> franchise could reach the "five million unit cadence" with <em>"Dead Space 3,"</em> though he didn't outright confirm the next sequel. </span><span class="text_article_body">Riccitiello was listing off the company's "strong, growing franchises" </span><span class="text_article_body">at the </span><span class="text_article_body">Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, reports </span><span class="text_article_body"><a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/289206/news/ea-boss-uses-words-dead-space-3/">CVG</a></span><span class="text_article_body">, when he footnoted <em>Dead Space</em> as a franchise close to becoming one of EA's biggest. <br />
</span><span class="text_article_body">EA has already invested quite a lot in <em>Dead Space,</em> making it an expansive, transmedia property (spanning <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-downfall/">animated</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-aftermath/">films</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space,comic/">comics</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-martyr/">a novel)</a>. Now, these <a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EW1047">full-size replicas</a> being released next month -- <em>there's</em> some real, substantial money-wastin'.<br />
<br />
The $220 replica of the Plasma Cutter from the first <em>Dead Space</em>, and the $240 <a href="http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EW1048"><em>Dead Space 2</em> version</a>, are packaged in metal briefcase-style carriers, and have rechargeable batteries to power the realistic "3-blast spot" lighting. The only thing they lack is real cutting power -- which is a shame, because at these prices, you're going to wish for real life-or-death monster battles to justify the cost.<br />

Despite an <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/dead-space">overwhelmingly</a> <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/dead-space">positive</a> critical reception, the first <em>Dead Space</em> was a launch dud when it hit retail in mid-October of 2008. Reporting on its life-to-date sales through that November, <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3882/npd_behind_the_numbers_november_.php?page=6">Gamasutra</a> described it, along with fellow EA newcomer <em>Mirror's Edge,</em> as having "failed miserably" -- NPD data <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/maddening-npd-data-shows-weak-dead-space-mirrors-edge-sales/">showed</a> that <em>Dead Space</em> was below 500K unit sales more than a month after launch. The following February, EA would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/04/dead-space-mirrors-edge-pass-1m-unit-sales-left-4-dead-nears/">quietly confirm</a> that the game had become a million-seller by the end of 2008.<br />
<br />
Fast-forward two Februaries later and EA is bringing back up that bleak launch, but this time in new light: "<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2">Dead Space 2</a></em> launched last week [...] <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/all/dead+space/results">outscoring</a> the original <em>Dead Space</em> and outselling it two-to-one," the publisher trumpeted in its <a href="http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=546873">latest list</a> of business highlights (without revealing specific figures). Putting the <em>Dead Space 2</em> commercial launch in such stark terms sounds impressive, but in reality it's more like "a pretty good start" for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/25/dead-space-2-review/">deserving</a> sequel.<br />
<br />
So, EA, when are you gonna give <em>Mirror's Edge</em> its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/riccitiello-mirrors-edge-deserves-second-chance-ea-still-push/">second chance</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/01/dead-space-2-outselling-first-game-2-to-1-ea-says/">Dead Space 2 outselling first game '2-to-1,' EA says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 17:45:00 EST. Are you hoping to get caught up on the events of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space">Dead Space</a></em> before its sequel drops next week? Okay, then: A whole bunch of people got murdered by monsters in space. Oh, you wanted something a bit more comprehensive? Well, then, you should grab the game on Steam at 66 percent off this weekend.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/22/dead-space-marked-down-66-percent-on-steam-this-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space marked down 66 percent on Steam this weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/22/dead-space-marked-down-66-percent-on-steam-this-weekend/">Dead Space marked down 66 percent on Steam this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. We're T-minus 12 days and counting until the launch of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2">Dead Space 2</a></em>. In what is probably a last marketing hurrah before it ships, EA has released new footage from the sci-fi horror title featuring protagonist Isaac Clarke coming face-to-typeface with giant quotes from glowing reviews of the game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/dead-space-2-launch-trailer-has-very-nice-things-to-say-about-de/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space 2 launch trailer has very nice things to say about Dead Space 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/dead-space-2-launch-trailer-has-very-nice-things-to-say-about-de/">Dead Space 2 launch trailer has very nice things to say about Dead Space 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 08:00:00 EST. Here's a nice bonus for fans of the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a>. If you have any save file -- completed or not -- from the first title, you'll unlock the original plasma cutter right off the bat for use in the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2">sequel</a>. Hardcore players should be more than familiar with the gun, thanks to an Achievement that forces players to complete an entire playthrough using <a href="http://www.trueachievements.com/achievement.aspx?achievementid=26818"><em>only</em></a> that gun.<br />
<br />
But don't expect the plasma cutter to give you much of an advantage at the beginning of the <em>Dead Space 2</em> campaign. Although you'll get access to the gun, Visceral Games' Louis Gascoigne told us that the upgrades you purchased for the weapon won't carry over into the sequel. Isaac Clarke just can't get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/get-caught-up-with-this-dead-space-2-trailer/">a break</a>, can he?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/01/dead-space-save-file-unlocks-original-plasma-cutter-in-dead-spac/">Dead Space save file unlocks original plasma cutter in Dead Space 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 01 Jan 2011 07:00:00 EST. EA hopes to tie together the events of the first <em>Dead Space</em> game with those of <em>Dead Space 2</em>, the sequel set to launch in January, and it's looking to accomplish this with ... well, yes, with the poorly received downloadable <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-ignition">Dead Space: Ignition</a></em>. But also with another <em>Dead Space</em> game! Instead of an animated motion comic with minigames, <em>Dead Space</em> on the iPhone is a 3D game with all of the gusto and flair of its console brethren. This thing looks and plays fantastically -- at least, I thought so after a brief demo at a recent downtown San Francisco event.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/dead-space-iphone-preview-small-scale-scares/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space iPhone preview: Small-scale scares</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/dead-space-iphone-preview-small-scale-scares/">Dead Space iPhone preview: Small-scale scares</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 17:14:00 EST. EA has <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2010/12/09/dead-space-aftermath-animated-series-being-released-on-blu-ray-and-dvd-in-january/">announced a release date</a> for the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/dead-space-lives-in-two-new-formats-animated-movie-and-graphic/"><em>Dead Space Aftermath</em> animated movie</a>. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 24 in Europe, and January 25 in the US. MSRP is $34.99, but some outlets (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0047S4UPW?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0047S4UPW">including Amazon at the moment</a>) are selling it for even cheaper than that already. The film will also come bundled in a double pack with 2008's animated tie-in, <em>Dead Space Downfall</em>.<br />
<br />
The film will supposedly serve as a prequel to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a>, about a group sent by the Government to <a href="http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Aegis_VII">the Aegis VII disaster</a> from the first animated film, in order to "test" the "effects" of Marker shards. Sounds like a recipe for "trouble" (and some gory scares). Between this release next month and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/dead-space-2-demo-due-december-21/">the demo later on this month</a>, the <em>Dead Space </em>franchise is about to get a whole lot <em>livelier</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/dead-space-aftermath-coming-to-dvd-and-blu-ray-on-january-25/">Dead Space Aftermath coming to DVD and Blu-ray on January 25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 21:30:00 EST. If an interactive motion comic sounds like something you could get into, then you'll likely be interested in this tidbit of news: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-ignition"><em>Dead Space Ignition</em></a>, the prequel to January's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a>, is set to launch on XBLA next week, October 13, for 400 MS Points ($5). The news comes via <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/10/05/coming-soon-to-the-xbox-live-marketplace-oct-5.aspx">Xbox Live's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb</a> -- we've contacted EA for clarification on a PSN price and launch date, which we assume will be the 12th, because the PlayStation Network usually <em>gets the stuff</em> on Tuesdays.<br />

Wanna dodge the sun's harmful rays and get some gaming in within the air-conditioned comfort of your home? EA's been offering discounts on its PC lineup every weekend; a revolving door of its best and brightest for a pittance. First on the agenda for my meeting with <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> executive producer Steve Papoutsis at Comic-Con was an earnest request: better tutorials, please. After all, I had played through the entire first game without realizing that I could press a button to use a medkit -- that I didn't have to open up the onscreen inventory, <em>while being attacked,</em> to heal. "You're not alone," Papoutsis said laughing. "We're currently focus testing some of our tutorials, and believe you me, we've got two that remind you to do that, because you're not alone."<br />
<br />
"That was a feature that we were in hot debate over," Papoutsis added, "and many of us, myself included, really pushed for it." Similar discussions have carried over into the development of the sequel, as Visceral Games continues to refine the gameplay. "We're taking it a step further," Papoutsis said of <em>Dead Space 2,</em> "so now, when you're not in combat or aim mode, you'll use one of your stasis recharge items. We've got health <em>and</em> stasis mapped" to a button.<br />

EA announced two more projects for the property, this time an animated feature called <em>Dead Space Aftermath</em>, available January 2011, and a graphic novel called <em>Dead Space Salvage</em>, expected out December 2010. Perfect for those of you who love <em>Dead Space</em>, but somehow hate video games.<br />
<br />
The animated <em>Aftermath</em> tells the story of a group sent by the Government to the site of the Aegis VII disaster, specifically to be exposed to Marker shards, in order to create a carrier for a "Marker blueprint." Of course, the people don't know that's why they've been brought there, and since it's horror (and <em>Dead Space</em>) we can expect the expedition to go ... well, not <em>great</em>. The <em>Salvage</em> comic, published by IDW, is about a group called the "Magpies" who come across the abandoned Ishimura, which is full of <strike>candy</strike> Government agents and necromorphs.<br />
<br />
We'll learn more details about these projects during today's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/comic-con-2010">Comic-Con</a> panel, "Building a Horror Entertainment Franchise: Dead Space 2."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/23/dead-space-lives-in-two-new-formats-animated-movie-and-graphic/">Dead Space lives in two new formats: animated movie and graphic novel out this winter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Jul 2010 14:00:00 EST. If your hunger for fiction set in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a> universe hasn't been slaked by two games, an online animated comic and a straight-to-DVD feature film, you might want to sink your teeth into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/dead-space-martyr-novel-tells-story-prior-to-dead-space/"><em>Dead Space: Martyr</em></a>, which hit <em>bookstore</em> shelves today in paperback for $15.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/dead-space-martyr-novel-out-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dead Space: Martyr novel out today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/dead-space-martyr-novel-out-today/">Dead Space: Martyr novel out today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 20:30:00 EST. The story, a prequel to the sequel, is delivered via lightly animated comic book-style art and follows an engineer on the Sprawl space station. Between the uniforms, the voices and the semi-animated look, <em>Ignition</em> reminds us of <a href="http://www.adultswim.com/shows/sealab-2021/"><em>Sealab 2021</em></a> -- bizarro!<br />
<br />
The engineer's job, of course, is to fix electronics, and that's where the main <em>interactive</em> part comes into play, in the form of three minigames: "Hardware Crack," "System Override," and "Trace Route." Only Trace Route was shown today -- a hacking-themed riff on the abstract line racer, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/24/nintendoware-weekly-art-style-light-trax-viral-survival-metal/">Light Trax</a></em>.<br />
<br />
<em>Ignition</em> is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this fall.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/dead-space-ignition-detailed-at-ea-press-event/">Dead Space Ignition detailed at EA press event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 17:10:00 EST. Got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/skate-3"><em>Skate 3</em></a>? Want to bust kickflips as everyone's favorite outer space engineer, Isaac Clarke? By inputting the code "deadspacetoo" into the Cheats area under the Extras section, you'll unlock the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space">Dead Space</a> </em>protagonist for use in Free Play mode. Who knew he could be so nimble in that outfit?<br />
<br />
Keen observers may notice Clarke riding <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=167221&amp;id=18523496658&amp;ref=mf#!/photo.php?pid=4230455&amp;id=18523496658">on a futuristic board</a>. That's because, by inputting the code, you'll also gain the new deck. Sorry, it's non-transferable between skaters -- we tried.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/22/dead-spaces-isaac-clarke-playable-in-skate-3/">Dead Space's Isaac Clarke playable in Skate 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 May 2010 05:30:00 EST. Speaking at a recent EA showcase in London, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a> executive producer Steve Papoutsis explained that while Visceral Games has plenty of ideas for the deep space horror series, the studio doesn't intend to run the franchise into the ground. <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/visceral_we_wont_cheapen_dead_space.html">According to Videogamer.com</a>, Papoutsis told attendees, "we've mapped out plenty of games worth of stuff. But there has to be an interest, right?" He added, "we don't want to cheapen what we're doing. We're really focused on quality with it. Hopefully if people like this one, we get to make another one."<br />
<br />
Papoutsis then told the crowd, "it would be great to just keep making more and more of them. We're thinking kart racer, a fitness game... joke!" Yeah, we're not sure a <em>Dead Space</em> fitness game would go over so well. You know, considering Isaac Clarke's main technique for weight loss is to forcibly remove excess appendages with the aid of futuristic power tools.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/19/plenty-of-dead-space-material-planned-producer-wary-of-diluti/">'Plenty' of Dead Space material planned, producer wary of diluting franchise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. <em><font size="1">Click to fill your browser space with </font></em><font size="1">Dead Space 2</font></div>
<br />
In the run-up to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a>'s full unveiling at E3 next month, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/visceral-games">Visceral Games</a> executive producer Steve Papoutsis recently gave me an all-too-brief run-through of some environments from the game, introducing me to a new array of nasty necromorphs -- but also some fancy new weapons with which to carve them up. Papoutsis was also keen to reassure me that, despite rumblings on the internet (oh, <em>that </em>thing) the game is not a run-and-gun shooter. Having seen it in action, I can assure <em>you </em>that it's not a run-and-gun shooter.<br />
<br />
The demo took place deep into the game, according to Papoutsis, so the weapons and suit that Issac Clark was sporting were <em>far cooler </em>than what you'll start out with while fighting to stay alive inside (and outside) of a mining complex -- the "Sprawl" -- on Saturn's moon. Though I could see the towering spires of a cityscape in the distance, we were headed into the mine itself for our first stop on the tour ... of <em>terror</em>.<br />
