The company picked up nearly all the assets in the auction, including Titan Quest, Supreme Commander, Frontlines, Stuntman, Juiced, Full Spectrum Warrior, Destroy All Humans and much more.

"First and foremost we are very happy about this deal which also turns over a new leaf for the entire Nordic Games Group. In the long term, we either want to cooperate with the original creators or best possible developers in order to work on sequels or additional content for these titles," said Nordic Games CEO Lars Wingefors. "A very important point for us is not to dash into several self-financed multi-million dollar projects right away, but rather to continue our in-depth analysis of all titles and carefully selecting different financing models for developing new instalments of acquired IPs."

The other reveal is 505 Games grabbed the rights to Drawn to Life and Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter for $300K.

The news follows this afternoon's unexpected acquisition of the Homeworld franchise by Gearbox Software. We now know the price tag for Gearbox to re-release the original games on digital distribution networks and take a swing at its own spin on the real-time strategy franchise was $1.35 million.

We've listed the winning bids in greater detail after the break.

Continue reading THQ auction results: Nordic Games takes Darksiders, Red Faction; 505 Games is Drawn to Life

THQ auction results: Nordic Games takes Darksiders, Red Faction; 505 Games is Drawn to Life originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 18:04:00 EST. The full list of properties up for sale, broken into six lots and posted in full after the break, also includes games like Destroy All Humans! and numerous licensed products.

Once interested bidders have gone through the proper channels, initial bids must be submitted by April 1, 2013, with final bids due on April 15. Once all bids have been submitted, THQ will talk the situation over with the various entities it owes money to and will then designate a primary and back-up bid for each lot. Once all that has been completed, the sales will be presented to the court for final approval, expected to take place in May.
Continue reading Darksiders, Homeworld, Red Faction and other IPs next on THQ auction

Darksiders, Homeworld, Red Faction and other IPs next on THQ auction originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Feb 2013 20:15:00 EST. Australia has one of the most lenient video-game-rating systems in the world.

No, really -- despite its reputation as an ultra-conservative, mature-rating hating government, "the reality is that many more games that are restricted to 17-year-olds in the U.S. or 18-year-olds in Europe are available without edit for 15-year-olds in Australia," said Chris Wright, former marketing head for THQ's two Australian studios, Blue Tongue and Studio Australia. "On balance, Australia is probably the most lenient country in the world for access to mature games."

No, really -- Wright was the man who presented Saints Row to the Australian classification board and he prepared plenty of ratings submissions in the country, both as head of THQ Asia Pacific and its two Australian studios. He knows the system, meaning he knows what it has and what it doesn't, such as an R18+ rating.

"I believe passionately that Australia needs an R18+ rating," Wright said. "But for me the R18+ rating is not about access to games, but parity with other entertainment forms and the acknowledgement of gaming as an adult pursuit. The R18+ rating will have a net effect of greater overall restrictions on access to games -- many games that would have previously been available to 15-year-olds will now only be available for 18-year-olds and above -- but will mean that a few games at the top end of the maturity scale are allowed to be released."

Legislation in Australia recently approved the R18+ rating (though it may take a few years to be enacted) and its Law Reform Commission is attempting to revamp the country's video-game rating system to acknowledge its adult audience. But recently, Australia has had more than ratings to worry about.
Continue reading Australian indie: From ratings systems to a boom of small studios, how AU will survive

Australian indie: From ratings systems to a boom of small studios, how AU will survive originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Nov 2011 18:00:00 EST. Electronic Arts has bid adieu to Pandemic Studios' Brisbane office, according to a "reliable source" speaking to Kotaku. The site reports that the studio has been "set free" and tasked with finding a new publisher, as opposed to being shut down completely.

EA acquired the Australian branch of Pandemic during its acquisition of BioWare last year. The studio is best known for the Destroy All Humans! series, but was rumored to have been working on other unannounced projects. We'll update if any new information arises.

Update: EA's Mariam Sughayer issued the following response: "In December, EA announced a cost reduction initiative that will impact facilities and headcount. We do not expect to make any more public announcements until our earnings call in early February. Outside of our scheduled earnings call, we aren't providing any new information on the status of individual facilities."
Rumor: EA sets Pandemic Studios Australia free originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 08:50:00 EST. With week after week of nothing but big releases (and a short breather last week) it looks like it's finally time to round out the big holiday gaming schedule. The biggest release this week is, without a shadow of a doubt, Prince of Persia. After the Prince took a questionable turn to the Dark Side (which followed his jaunt to the Emo Side), Ubisoft decided the entire series needed a refresh and the result is available this week. Here's hoping the Prince manages to scale those obstacles with panache and aplomb rather than falling to his death with all the grace of a stone. Here are all of this week's releases:
We really did but, honestly, there's only one thing we can say about the new Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon trailer (embedded after the break). That thing is this: The game features some kind of rainbow gun. We can't really discern if the gun actually fires rainbows or rather a much more sinister projectile that leaves rainbows in its wake. We're inclined to think it's the latter, given the ultimate goal of the game (which seems obvious, considering the title). There are other powers and weapons featured in the trailer but, come on, it's a rainbow gun. What more could you need?
Continue reading New Destroy All Humans: PoTF trailer

New Destroy All Humans: PoTF trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 29 Nov 2008 12:00:00 EST. THQ has informed Eurogamer that the PlayStation 3 version of earthling annihilation sim Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon, isn't quite as canceled we were lead to believe. It's still on track for a European release, joining its Xbox 360 sibling on shelves next year, February 13th. Is that enough time to sort out those "development issues?"

A spokesperson for the publisher explained: "Due to the game being shipped earlier in North America on 2nd December a decision was made to proceed exclusively with the Xbox 360 format in that market." If you were to ask us, we'd say the European strategy for releasing outside the holiday period and on twice as many platforms seems like the smarter one. If you were to ask us.
Destroy All Humans!
Looks like you guys over on the Old Continent will get a chance to destroy some humans on the PS3 afterall. Shacknews reports that THQ's upcoming (and cow probing) Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon has been canceled on the Playstation 3 citing "development issues" as being the main reason. Though, THQ is still commited to releasing the Xbox 360 version the first week of December, making Path of the Furon a 360 exclusive. It's a wonder the UFO soaring toward retail next week has made it through such a rocky atmosphere intact. Well, not entirely. Identified as Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon, the vessel has shed half of its cargo, with THQ confirming to Shacknews that the PlayStation 3 version of the game (flying under all radars) has been canceled due to "development issues." Put another way, PS3 owners can consider themselves spared from the latest sequel in the good-idea-gone-bad franchise. So, about that new focus on quality ...
Many lives spared: PS3 'Destroy All Humans! The PS3 version of Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon has been mysteriously canceled a week before its release. Originally scheduled for December 1st, the game will now ship exclusively on Xbox 360. According to THQ, "development issues" have been blamed for this cancellation.

Perhaps those "issues" involved forgetting to actually start development of the PS3 version. Or perhaps THQ just didn't care. Or maybe it's because THQ fired everyone that might've even worked on a PS3 version. Regardless, we doubt many of you are feeling the loss.
Maybe its reception will be warmer than the original's lukewarm reviews and maybe Crypto will finally realize that probing cows does absolutely nothing for his human species research.
Destroying all humans begins this December originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 17:15:00 EST.
Per last week's announcement, two new exclamation point loving Xbox Originals just released to the XBLM and both are patiently awaiting your 1200 Microsoft point purchase. The new achievement-less titles (that NEVER gets old), Destroy All Humans! and Intellivision Lives!, can be found under the "New Releases" section of the Marketplace. If you can't decide which title to buy, maybe you can opt to pickup both OR (as we suggest) ignore them completely. But maybe that's being a bit harsh?

It's high time for some real talk about Xbox Originals. Specifically, who's choosing what makes the cut? Not that Destroy all Humans! or Intellivision Lives! are bad games by any means. It's just that, when you think of a service that could be offering the best, exclusive games from a system's previous generation on the current one via the interwebs, you'd hope they'd be more ... original and memorable.

As it stands, we're getting a complete mish-mash of revered and forgettable moments from the annuls of the original Xbox. How about some Panzer Dragoon Orta or Star Wars: Republic Commando before the likes of Kabuki Warriors? Ahem. Ranting aside, both Destroy All Humans! and Intellivision Lives! hit the Xbox Live Marketplace on September 15 for 1200 ($15) each. We'd love to hear which Xbox games you would have join the ranks of the Xbox Originals in comments.

Holy exclamation points! Exclamation point!

As is customary with all Xbox Originals, both titles will release to the Xbox Live Marketplace for 1200 Microsoft points apiece and require some hard drive gigage. For those who aren't familiar with either title, Intellivision Lives! is a collection of over 60 old-old-school Intellivision games while Pandemic's Destroy All Humans! is all about doing alien related activities like probing humans and flying around the city in a UFO wreaking havoc. It seems the folks in charge at THQ have decided to disappoint all humans who were anxiously awaiting the PSP outing of Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed. Though <strike>the three of you</strike> absolutely nobody will lament this particular cancellation, IGN reports that it was at least done for the right reasons. Said a THQ representative: "Basically, the PSP version was cancelled because of control issues."

With the game being designed specifically for the Wii, "the controls simply didn't translate well, and instead of pushing out the product with translated controls, it was cancelled." From the player's perspective, it sounds like it was the humane thing to do, but we wonder how many PSP games would be left if all developers adopted this particular stance on controls.
Big Willy Unleashed for the PSP has been canceled. Oh wait, you never heard of this title? That's probably because we last reported on it about a year ago.

It is quite difficult to be excited about a game you don't hear much about, and so it comes as a non-shocker to hear that the game has been canceled. IGN reports that a THQ rep made this statement: "Basically, the PSP version was cancelled because of control issues ... When it was ported over to the PSP, the controls simply didn't translate well, and instead of pushing out the product with translated controls, it was canceled."

This must be bad news for Destroy All Humans! fans. For the rest of us who didn't have any vested interest in seeing alien "Willies" unleashing, we can all rest a little easier now.
Destroy All Humans! The whole thing depresses us because of how much we want to be on board with the game. No fan of humans ourselves, their total annihilation is not something we're inherently resistant to. But there's only so much we can do, and ignoring mediocre gameplay isn't one of those things.

But this new trailer for Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon has actually given us a little hope. Could this be the first DAH game to marry quality with a great premise? Absolutely. Could our enthusiasm be the direct result of the trailer's reliance on cinematics rather than much actual gameplay? Ab-so-lutely.
See a new trailer for Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 14:49:00 EST. There's a pair of high profile titles hitting the Wii this week, in the latest installment of the Destroy All Humans and Sega's latest Dreamcast-to-Wii port, SEGA Bass Fishing. Then, there's another game that we, frankly, don't care much about. Since we've gone ahead and finished No More Heroes, you can bet we're dying to get some new games to play. Maybe we'll unleash Big Willy ...

This week's retail releases are:

Sega Bass Fishing

Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed

Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None

Other than that, he offered the faintest hope of Wii games from the Mercenaries/Destroy All Humans developers (Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed is developed by Locomotive Games), with a blanket statement. "Pandemic has had a long-standing tradition of being multiplatform, and we're going to continue to do that. Other than that, we don't have any other big announcements. But we love the platform."

While that noncommittal statement doesn't bode well for the near future, at least Resnick has the right idea about how to treat the Wii, saying "We're not going to make the mistake of just trying to port things over to it. We're going to do something from the ground up that really makes sense for that platform and that audience."

This stance seems to disprove the rumor that Pandemic was working on a children's game last year. At the very least, it suggests that they're not working on it anymore.
The Wii is a gaming platform, and Pandemic likes those originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST. Alternately, if you're so into the Big Boy character that you'll buy figurines of characters parodying the mascot, THQ has one they would like to sell to you. It comes with a video game.

In the game, Big Willy is a walking mech in the camouflage of a friendly fast-food mascot. In real life, it's a bobblehead that you can only get at GameStop. Is it also a cleverly-disguised weapon? We can't really tell from the picture!
Update: Looks like we had a mix-up with the videos. They were both the same. Sorry for the mix-up.

And there is nothing wrong with that at all. But, you may be wondering exactly what this game is, as our coverage has been around slim to none. Well, we apologize about that, but it seems that every Nintendo fanboy and fangirl is waiting on some other game. But, that shouldn't discourage you from checking out Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed, which looks to be another solid installment in the quirky sandbox franchise. Big on humor and messing with humans, we're sure the latest title will be as good as previous installments in the franchise.

For a look at the game's controls, head on past the break.

Anyone looking forward to picking this up?
Confirming earlier rumors, THQ has announced that the PlayStation 3 version of dystopian shooter, Frontlines: Fuel of War, has been canceled. And it's not the only game to have its plug unceremoniously pulled. Indeed, THQ's update to its fiscal 2008 outlook brings to mind Joystiq's consistently inept maid who's always yanking all the cables out with her feet while she's dusting the office TV.

In describing the publisher's third fiscal quarter (ended December 31, 2007), the report notes "non-cash charges of approximately $27 million" in relation to the cancellation of not only the PlayStation 3 edition of Frontlines, but the PlayStation 2 version of Destroy All Humans!: Big Willy Unleashed. THQ also notes a decision "not to pursue" its Juiced and Stuntman properties, the latter particularly described as underperforming following its release on Xbox 360 and PS3 last year.

Also appended are two unannounced titles for Xbox 360 and PS3 which "had" been scheduled for release in THQ's fiscal year 2010. One of them was being worked on by THQ's Concrete Games Studio, also the victim of a closure according to the report. Though it would be easier to blame the maid, THQ CEO and president, Brian Farrel, deemed the decouplings necessary to "strengthen [THQ's] pipeline and position [the company] to compete aggressively with compelling, high quality games."
THQ cans Frontlines PS3, Juiced and Stuntman franchises originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 19:30:00 EST. On top of all of the cultural references is a layer of self-referential humor which is less than subtle: Crypto's boss Pox refers to his "previous video game adventures," and the two riff on the 'blink, then disappear' death style common in games.

If there's anything of which all should be destroyed, it's the Jack Nicholson impression used for Crypto's voice.
Destroy all trailers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Dec 2007 11:15:00 EST. The new Destroy All Humans! prequel, Big Willy Unleashed, seems to follow the same formula as the two previous games: humans get destroyed in hilarious and sadistic ways. However, the new game adds two twists to the formula.

First, alien anti-hero Crypto will have the use of a Big Boy-esque walking mech, the "Big Willy" mentioned in the juvenile title (and not Will Smith). Second, the game has been bloom-lit into infinity, creating the distinct appearance of a TV screen smeared with Vaseline. But who are we to complain about little things like overuse of "next gen" lighting effects, when there are humans who need a firm destroying?
Bloom-light all aliens originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 15:10:00 EST. A brief note in publisher THQ's fiscal report (PDF file) indicates that a previously announced sequel to Saint's Row will not be marching until fiscal year 2009. In calendar terms, that means excess excess pimp-slapping won't be coming until at least April 1, 2008.

Conspicuously absent from the entire report was a mention of a Destroy All Humans sequel. Though DAH3 was reportedly announced in a German magazine as coming out this calendar year to consoles, no mentions were made of the franchise for either FY 2008 or 2009. It is still listed as one of its key IPs, however.

There's always a chance, however slim, that THQ could pull a surprise announcement at next week's Min-E3. Expected this fiscal year from THQ are Stuntman: Ignition, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights and MX vs. ATV. Oh, and licensed titles, too.
Destroy All Humans, Saint's Row sequels not coming this year originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 14:45:00 EST. THQ has announced in German magazine Man!ac (via N-Europe) that Destroy All Humans 3 is coming out sometime this year (in Europe, at least) for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS2, PSP and Nintendo Wii.

A new title in the series was mentioned by THQ CEO Brian Farrell in an investor conference call in February, but no dates or platforms were given at the time. Pandemic is the likely developer, as it created the last two Destroy All Humans titles (as a joke, originally). Is this secret project B, Q, Y or Z?

A TV show based on the Destroy All Humans series was announced in late 2005, but so far nothing has come of it.
A game magazine called Maniac has some exclusive screens and info from THQ about one new franchise and one old one, both headed to the Wii.

De Blob is a Wii exclusive about a blob (obviously) that, by rolling around in paint then rolling around on stuff, adds color to a dull environment. It seems to be based on an indie PC game called The Blob. Destroy All Humans 3, also coming to PS2, PSP, 360, and PS3 is about destroying all humans, which shamefully didn't get done the first two times. We guess Pandemic changed their minds about the Wii.
Continue reading German magazine reveals new THQ games to All Humans

German magazine reveals new THQ games to All Humans originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 15:45:00 EST.
