"Degradable" game demos, as described in a patent filed by SCEA, would initially include either a full game or a large amount of content, but that content would gradually disappear over playtime, to unlock again once the full game is purchased. Examples in the patent document include a weapon that becomes less effective over time, and race tracks that become unavailable one at a time.

Essentially, it's the DIVX rental system, but downloadable and for games. You know, DIVX, the system in which you "bought" a cheap disc that would only work for a short time unless you paid a fee to "unlock" it. That lasted less than a year because it was too popular, right?
Sony files patent for game demos that lose features over time originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 22:15:00 EST. If you're willing to download a program for your computer, then register an account at DivX.com, and then find a product registration code from your PS3, and then download a file to a flash drive to copy onto your PS3, and then use said file to initiate an activation process ... you'll be able to download one of these movies for free: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Two Weeks Notice, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Batman Begins and Green Lantern: First Flight.

Yeah that's a lot of hoops to jump through just to get to a collection of mostly outdated films. You might be better off saving your time by going to the PlayStation Store and renting something from there instead.

[Thanks, Davis F.!
Sony is giving PlayStation 3 owners a surprise gift today. Firmware 2.60 will be dropping imminently and will bring with it several new features. The photo gallery is a new installable feature which gives you a large variety of ways of sorting and displaying your photos. You can see more of that in the video above.

DivX 3.11 is also now supported by PS3s, as well as guest access to the PlayStation Store. This means that whether you've signed up or not you can now browse the PlayStation Store and see all the cool stuff you're missing out on. No doubt there'll be some further, secret features included in 2.60. If you find anything else be sure to let us know. We'll update as soon as the new firmware goes live.

[UPDATE] Firmware 2.60 is now live. Retrieve it via the "System Update" XMB menu option.

Firmware 2.60 brings photo gallery, DivX 3.11 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 12:15:00 EST. In an update that predates Microsoft's NXE, the Xbox 360 gained the ability to playback DivX formatted video but according to VP Jerome Vashist-Rota of the DivX Inc., his company isn't exactly happy with the route Microsoft took. Speaking with TechRadar the DivX VP of creative, brand and community praised the Xbox 360 for its DivX support but expressed frustration that the Xbox 360 uses third-party software and not the official codec provided by his company.

"It's all about branding," Rota said. "And branding can work both ways, so it is not just us losing out with the Xbox 360's lack of official certification." It doesn't seem to be a sticking point with consumers, or Microsoft for that matter, so only MS knows if changes are afoot. Currently, Sony has a partnership with DivX and uses the official codec for video support.

[via 1UP]
DivX VP "not very happy" with the Xbox 360's codec decision originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 15:30:00 EST. DivX and Sony Pictures Television have locked arms in a deal to enable online retailers to offer Sony Pictures content for download-to-own on DivX Certified devices. Engadget HD has confirmed that PlayStation 3 is one such 'certified' device, but not Xbox 360 (we're guessing Microsoft passed on paying the licensing fee). Though specific platforms have yet to be named, the agreement could see any number of Sony Pictures' ginormous catalog of past and present television shows being sold through PSN in high-quality DivX format. But, seeing as how Sony can barely manage to deliver a single, unenhanced PS1 game on the network at snail's pace, we're cautious to put our faith in the dubious service ever taking on the competition.

[Via Engadget HD]
PS3 could get downloadable Sony Pictures Television content in DivX format originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Jan 2008 15:30:00 EST. Stage6 is widely known amongst DivX fans as one of the best places to get high quality streaming DivX video. Unfortunately, the site isn't compatible with the PS3 ... or is it?

It is, so long as you're willing to fiddle around with the PS3's web browser a bit. Go to a Stage6 video you're interested in. Scheduled for release on December 18th (we're confirming the date with SCEA), Firmware 2.10 joins the Xbox 360's Fall dashboard update in offering support for the pervasive DivX video codec. There are some caveats, however, as files that are copyright-protected, encoded with DivX 3.11 or larger than 2GB in size are not supported.

Also added by the update is support for VC-1 (WMV) playback, Type 3 music bitmapping, Blu-ray Profile 1.1 and a "Voice Changer." You know, in case you thought your normal voice wasn't obnoxious enough in the hushed library that is the PS3's online scene.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
PS3 firmware 2.10 coming tomorrow, features DivX support originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 12:10:00 EST. Version 2.10 is mostly a visual media-based update, with none of the listed features having any impact on gameplay. In other words, you can stop holding your breath - there's no in-game XMB here. Instead, we the arrival of two highly anticipated features. Blu-Ray profile 1.1 and DivX support will heavily increase the PS3's standing as a media hub.

There's a smattering of other little additions, all of which we've listed after the break. There are also a couple of stipulations with regards to DivX - namely, that copyright protected files, v3.11 encoded videos and files larger than 2GB cannot be played.

[Via NeoGAF]
Continue reading PS3 firmware version 2.10 coming tomorrow - includes DivX support

PS3 firmware version 2.10 coming tomorrow - includes DivX support originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Dec 2007 10:20:00 EST. Just two days after the Xbox 360 Fall Update added DivX and Xvid support, Connect360 - the app that shares your Mac's music, photos, and videos with your 360 - has been updated to support the new codecs. We imagine the update wasn't that difficult, since simply changing a video's file extension from .avi to .wmv tricked the app into streaming our totally legitimate collection of videos, but we're happy for the official fix. $20 buys you the app, but the upgrade to 3.2 is free for existing users. Wanna try it out? Download the demo. Dare we say, it actually works better than the official Windows solution? We dare!

[Via Megatonik]
Connect360 3.2 + Xbox 360 = DivX / Xvid streaming for Macs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Dec 2007 13:58:00 EST. Confirming the results of Joystiq's own tests -- yep, DivX and Xvid files now play perfectly -- the guide acknowledges support for MPEG-4 Part 2 (Simple and Advanced Simple Profile) videos, which will be playable once tomorrow's update has been installed. The post does note that additional functionalities (menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc.) that are sometimes contained in DivX files will not be supported by Xbox 360, and in some cases can render such files unplayable. Though, for the most part, all of your BitTorrent'd cache will play whether streamed from a computer or fed directly from a USB storage device.

The Xbox Team's guide also gives pointers on how to organize your files into a hierarchy that takes advantage of 360's sorting filters and how to associate a thumbnail image with each video, in addition to a list of gamepad shortcuts: Push 'Start' to begin video playback from a bookmarked position and bypass the Resume/Restart sub-page. But it's not all just "duh" tips, the FAQ gets into the nitty-gritty of BVOPs, quarter pixel motion compensation, and even ... quantization! (Yeah, we're just gonna keep on pretendin' like we know.)

[Thanks, Thomas]
Xbox 360 video playback FAQ originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 16:25:00 EST. For their second Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update, Microsoft decided to trickle the features out instead of dropping them on us all at once. Around Halloween, we realized things were awful quiet, so we asked you what you wanted to see in the Fall Update. On November 7, Microsoft kicked things off by announcing the Parental Timer, a feature we're certain you're all eager to try out. They followed that up on November 13 by confirming Xbox Originals, downloadable Xbox 1 games for your 360. On the 26th, they spilled the beans on the social-networky "Friends of Friends" feature, ostensibly to give paranoid folks some time to disable the functionality (which they can do here). Capping it all off a day later, MS Japan dropped some info, notably the ability to set your real name (your real name is xXsmokezmadbluntz420Xx?), your location, and a brief bio - more of that social networking stuff the kids are crazy about.

Finally, after what seemed an interminable wait, Microsoft was ready to let us in on the big picture. We spoke with Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg about next Tuesday's update and what was still in store. "There are three different categories that speak to a majority of the updates," Greenberg told us.
Continue reading Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update detailed: DivX, XBLA Hits, and more

Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update detailed: DivX, XBLA Hits, and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 12:00:00 EST. DivX, Inc. today revealed a partnership with Sony to integrate its video playback technology into PlayStation 3. While a consumer-targeted firmware update has not been dated, developers who update their SDKs to version 2.00 can already utilize the DivX decoder technology for use in their games. But who cares about games anymore? With DivX support enabled (hopefully in the near future) for PS3 owners, a lot of that juicy BitTorrent content you've compulsively horded on your basement PC can be effortlessly streamed upstairs to the console. Now if they'd just add Xvid support you could finally cut the cable bill altogether...

[Note: Xbox 360 is not natively compatible with DivX or Xvid formats, though DivX support has been rumored to be included in the pending Fall Update.]

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
PS3 DivX support announced originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 10:27:00 EST. This will be enabled via a firmware update at some point in the (hopefully, near) future. Game developers are also now able to incorporate DivX video into games using tools within the 2.0 SDK.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

However, DivX support on its own is not much more than an aid to video pirates. We're hoping this is the start of some sort of digital video download service, which utilizes the DivX format. Sony has always planned on a service such as this and now would be a great time to implement it. We'll keep you informed.

[Via PS3Forums]
DivX support coming to the PS3 soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 09:35:00 EST. Hell's response was an enthusiastic "Yes!" followed by a semi-awkward, backpedaling clarification that went something like ... "that, uh, we're in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can't go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time."

His response may not sound like confirmation of DivX headed to the 360, but simply reading the quote doesn't paint the whole picture. According to those who attended the conference, it was how he answered the question thta was most revealing. Hell was very enthusiastic at first when he answered "Yes!" and then he quickly tried to backpedal and change the subject. Was it a slip of the tongue or a simple misunderstanding? No one is certain, but we wouldn't be surprised to see DivX support added to the 360 this December.

[Thanks, Evan Walsh]
Rumor: 360 DivX support to be a Fall feature originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 11 Nov 2007 12:30:00 EST. The feature was a welcomed gain for non-Media Center users who have been limited to photo and music sharing between their Windows PCs and Xbox 360s -- and to anyone who's longed to watch video files on 360 via a thumb drive or CD/DVD.

Unfortunately, licensing fees and digital rights concerns have limited the patch to WMV-support only. Being Microsoft's proprietary format, WMV is neither popular or oft-used, taking a backseat to preferred codecs like DivX and XviD. A reader by the name of Joel stated that "the PSP doesn't have a Core 2 Duo, it has 237 Megahertz. Live streaming video needs mmuch more."

Well, looks like homebrew has proven you wrong. Very wrong. A homebrew application called PiMPstreamer has just been updated, and the responses have been overwhelmingly positive. The program lets you stream movies and music from your PC to your PSP. Movies can include traditional MPEG, AVI and even WMV files. It's only been tested on 1.5 firmware, so those of you that homebrew-compatible PSPs might want to check it out. For the rest of us, I think it's a clear indicator that the PSP is very capable of a video streaming function, and we should demand Sony implement it in the next firmware.

[Via PSP Hacks]
PiMPstreamer homebrew streams video originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Aug 2006 15:15:00 EST. Fortunately, there are a couple apps out there that solve the problem byconverting DivX to WMV on the fly. Of course, you still need Windows Media Center.

MCE Video Encoder has the followingfeatures:

Pause and Unpause Streaming from Windows Client and MCEAdd-in,

Transcode 360 (alsosupports Quicktime and Real Media Video) has been around since early February and is getting great reviews. If you tryeither one, report back with your experience / comparison.

Still seems like a hassle to me. This is one ofthose non-piracy related areas where a modded Xbox w/XBMC truly pwns the 360. Now he's back at it, crafting together a solution to get your DivX orXviD files to play through your MCE on the Xbox 360. He's quick to point out this is a software solution, and not amod. "This is not a mod solution or an xbox 360 hack. this works purelyusing the extensibility points of Media Center and freely available tools from MS. i.e. no warranties will bevoided. and when Vista MCE comes out, we'll be able to radically improve this."

The systemworks by transcoding, in realtime, your non-compatible formats into Windows Media files on a Media Center PC, makingthem readable by the 360. A clever solution to a problem that Microsoft insists doesn't exist. I'm sure I'm not theonly one who was glad to see a solution was discovered that didn't involve all kinds of h4x0ring; Microsoft's MajorNelson even acknowledgedit, calling it a "hacky way of doing it."
