When we first embarked on our blogging careers, fresh-faced and full of hope, there were titles that we never expected to use. "Christina Aguilera's blasphemous Donkey Kong art," it's fair to say, was one such example.

Yet the world moves in mysterious ways, and so here we are, blogging about how pop songstress Christina Aguilera has hung the original version of the above artwork on the wall of her baby's nursery. That's right, folks: while Michael dangles his kids from balconies, and Britney has hers taken away, Christina surrounds her offspring with awesome Nintendo artwork. Titled "The Last Supper," this particular piece is by the artist Misha, and was created for the 2006 I Am 8-Bit Show.

Incidentally, if you want to be just like Christina -- and with an attitude to child-rearing like hers, who wouldn't harbor such aspirations? -- then great news! Prints of the above piece are available now at the Gallery1988 website for $75. That's ... actually tempting.
Christina Aguilera's blasphemous Donkey Kong art originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 22:30:00 EST. It's just the way life is.

But, we do have a lot of LEGOs. And it's scientific fact that anything combined with LEGOs is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. In fact, we have so many LEGO pieces, we're certain we could do our own version of classic NES games with them. When King of Kong director Seth Gordon was approached to direct a new Vince Vaughn comedy for Newline Cinemas, he couldn't help but include a small appearance by everybody's favorite underdog Donkey Kong legend. That's right, school teacher turned DK record-breaker Steve Wiebe will have a small walk-on role in Gordon's upcoming film Four Christmases.

The role is uncredited by IMDB, but a representative from Newline reports that Wiebe will have a cameo appearance as Jim, Reese Witherspoon's character's brother, and brother-in-law to Vince Vaughn's character. No word yet if Wiebe's character will allude to Donkey Kong, record-breaking, or his unexplainable disdain for hot sauce.

[Thanks, Edog]
King of Kong underdog to cameo in upcoming film originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 04:00:00 EST. For better or for worse, Donkey Kong, noted primate, kart racer and plumber antagonist, has just made the fateful jump.

Just as informative of the images of the Monster Jam truck (which actually bears a striking resemblance to DK) are the (plentiful) reactions of children at the ape's automotive debut, all of who attempt to describe how "cool" and "awesome" the truck is, but seem to be incapable of capturing the grandeur with mere words. Luckily, the camera pans away before they result to guttural grunts and screeching.

[Thanks, Shawn]
Donkey Kong becomes a monster truck originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 09:50:00 EST. For Wii owners, there is likely one release that rests atop your list for games you want to pick up: Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast. A game that was to release on the GameCube, it's been updated for the Wii. And, we know how much you guys love Nintendo and their games, so are we correct in our assumption?

What will you be playing? Some Barrel Blast, or are you trying to play something different, such as Mercury Meltdown or Looney Tunes: ACME Arsenal?
WRUP: Blasting barrels with DK edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 16:00:00 EST. Much like last week, this week is chock full of new releases for our beloved Wii. There's even one release that was to already be released last week, but had to be bumped forward to this week. There's even a title that originated on the GameCube releasing this week (which we've had some mixed feelings about)..
We sit down and speak with Rich Amtower, who works in Nintendo's Treehouse division. Responsible for adapting Japanese titles to the English, French and Spanish markets, you can imagine he's got quite the difficult job to do.

That doesn't stop us from bugging him for an interview, though.

First of all, explain who you are and what your duties are with the company?

My name is Rich Amtower, and I work in the localization department. Our job is to take games made in Japan and make them feel like they were made in America, basically -- that means recording English voices if there are Japanese voices in a game, translating and rewriting Japanese text into English (and now French and Spanish), and doing whatever sorts of alterations need to be made so that when gamers pick up a title, they feel like they're playing something tailor-made for them.
Continue reading DS Fanboy interviews Treehouse's Rich Amtower

DS Fanboy interviews Treehouse's Rich Amtower originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Oct 2007 14:00:00 EST. Do people exist somewhere that don't own this system? If the Japanese sales charts are to be believed, then there have been enough Nintendo DS systems sold so that every man, woman, child, and dog on the planet could have one of these. And a spare.

However, if you are DS-less and have a hankering to get onboard with the action, and you have some rudimentary photochopping skills, then try your hand at the Nintendo DS/DK contest at SmugMug. All you have to do is paste the little guy climbing to the top of pretty much anything, and then submit it. Keep in mind though, images must be under 12 mb in size (good gawd).

It's a pretty easy contest to enter, and the swag is well worth the time, so why not whip something up and get in? We made one in just a few seconds (hint, it's the image for this post) so you should trump our skillz easily and submit it to them.

Check out the rules on their site. Also, the comment on the first (and only) entry that's up so far is ... priceless. Ahh, the internets.
Paste Donkey Kong on photo, win a DS lite and DK Jungle Climber originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Sep 2007 01:00:00 EST. Perhaps the characters are reaching for something unseen -- a dropped banana, a tool vital to their current task, or the wrist of a fleeing love who's spurred their unwanted advances. Keep that last possibility in your mind as you look over a few more examples of outstretched-hand boxarts after the post break.

The outstretched-hand-boxart club originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 25 Aug 2007 12:00:00 EST. King of Kong hit theaters -- a handful, at least -- today, so if you're in one of the few selected cities we recommend you sacrifice your other Friday not plans and check it out. Even BioShock can wait, for those few lucky enough to grab an early copy. Now, finally, a good game-based movie has come along and, unfortunately, it's only viewable in five theaters nationwide.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters opens today in New York (two theaters), LA, Seattle and Austin, Texas. The movie's limited release extends to seven more cities next week and four more the week after on its way to eventual release in 25 total cities.

Reviews of the film continue to be overwhelmingly positive, with only one bad review among the 25 currently listed on Rotten Tomatoes (not quite 100% fresh anymore, but still close). If you want to encourage quality, non-fiction video game film-making and you're lucky enough to live in one of the above cities, vote with your wallets and buy tickets for the opening weekend. You'll be glad you did.
King of Kong opens in four cities today originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:13:00 EST.
Burabura Donkey, or DK: King of Swing as we know it in the states, puts you on a quest to recover 24 stolen medals and prove yourself as the Jungle Hero. Swinging the gorilla from peg to peg is managed with your handheld's L and R buttons, while jumping can be accomplished by hitting the two shoulder buttons at the same time.

Its mechanics are simple, and many feel that the graphics are a step back from the Donkey Kong Country series, but it can still be pretty fun if you're looking for something different in an action game. Import shop Play Asia will be selling Japanese copies of the Paon-developed GBA title for $10.90 for the next three days, so if you still haven't tried out DK: King of Swing, here's your chance!

In the latest issue, a reader writes in asking if Donkey Kong 64 could appear on the Virtual Console for the Wii, what with the game requiring the expansion pack and all. Apparently, the folks at Rare have been thinking about that game too, but they've been thinking DS and not Wii.

Given that Mario 64 DS doesn't have the best control scheme, we worry about how this game would handle itself in that respect should this rumor turn out to be true. Other than that, we say bring it on.
Rumor: Donkey Kong 64 coming to the DS? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Aug 2007 13:10:00 EST. Today's dojo update provides us with a look at the Final Smash maneuver for Nintendo mascot Donkey Kong. Upon retrieving the item, Donkey Kong busts out his patented bongos. Upon beating on them with his most massive of hands, he slaps out a tune so deadly that it kills all who hear it. Except for large gorillas (we imagine the song is Eddie Murphy's "Party all the Time").

You know the deal, images of DK rocking the bongos are in the gallery below.

Dojo update: Donkey Kong Final Smash originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 18:10:00 EST. These Italian Wii ads are just awesome. Using the Post-it technique of creating pixel art, Nintendo pasted some giant sprites up on walls and signboards. Passersby who thought to pull down the Post-its (the jerks) found Wii ad copy on the back of each pixel, and, hopefully, more Post-its underneath.

Interactive advertising like this seems like a great idea. What's more Nintendo than encouraging potential customers to touch!! their advertising?

[Via Kotaku]
Don't you forget about Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jul 2007 16:50:00 EST. The Dojo has updated again, this time providing us with a complete bio of Donkey Kong, along with a short gameplay video. Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, everything will be totally made-up and unfounded. Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true.

Rumor: Super Smash Bros. Brawl's online mode will be revealed! It's an online store in which you can purchase different-colored ties for Donkey Kong.
Conjecture Countdown: 5 days to go originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. The official Japanese site for Nintendo's Wii has updated again, with more of those experience videos they've made us so accustomed to. (And we were sick of the drum roll after Rayman Rabbids, even with the reward of kicking a bunny or launching one off a train cart.)

Oh, waggle, prove us wrong.

See the video after the break.
Continue reading Today's please-play-play-better-in-person video: DK Bongo Blast

Today's please-play-play-better-in-person video: DK Bongo Blast originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. In honor of Father's Day, we thought we'd ask a themed question: Who's your favorite father and son/daughter team? Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr., or, uh, hmm. Oh, how about Bowser and the Koopa Kids? Pac-Man and Baby Pac-Man? Pitfall Harry and Harry Jr. from Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure?

Man, we already had to go to Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure? Maybe you guys can think of more. We can't be retrogaming encyclopedias every day, okay? It would be pretty hard to limit this to the DS, but if you can think of DS characters, you win at commenting.
DS Daily: Happy Father's Day! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jun 2007 10:00:00 EST. The former GameCube title's official site has several videos illustrating its new control scheme with the Wii remote and nunchuck -- drum both to tear through the course at breakneck speeds of 30 mph, waggle with only one hand to veer right into a wall, and put them back down when you decide to play Mario Kart DS instead!

There are a lot of movies and sections at the site that haven't been revealed yet, so there's still plenty of opportunities for DK Jet to impress us before its June 28th release in Japan. If you listen to the ridiculous noises Donkey Kong makes with every jump, however, it sounds like the depressed groan of a gorilla who just wants to go home. Throw a barrel past the post break for one of the demonstration clips we grabbed.
Continue reading Completely unexciting DK Jet videos

Completely unexciting DK Jet videos originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. Not only that, but the change in controls kind of have us a bit worried about the game. "I guess they paint me as a son of a gun," reflects Mitchell, who hasn't seen the movie. He guesses right.

Mitchell and cohorts recently spoke to MTV about Seth Gordon's reality-based film. Gordon and crew whittled away more than 300 hours of footage to forge a playful drama detailing Donkey Konger Steve Wiebe's journey to the top of the record books -- all, of course, at the expense of Mitchell's image. And, according to former Twin Galaxies referee Robert Mruczek, The King of Kong is also "full of holes." For example, Mitchell and Wiebe had rubbed shoulders back in 2004 (before the documentary was filmed), during the Classic Gaming Expo -- they even played Donkey Kong! Whereas, the film implies that Mitchell has avoided almost all public interaction with Wiebe and has shied away from playing Donkey Kong in his rival's presence. More surprising is that Billy Mitchell wasn't even the Donkey King high score holder at the time shooting for the movie began. That honor had belonged to no-name Tim Sczerby, who is conspicuously absent from Gordon's film.

It's easy to confuse documentary filmmaking with fact-based accounts. But don't be fooled, these cost-effective movies can be just as contrived as VH1's next B-list reality gimmick. Unfortunately, the "actors" can end up being the victims. But maybe Mitchell should heed a friend's advice and cash in on his new reputation. America loves its villains ( ...and loves to pay to see 'em villainate).
Continue reading Billy Mitchell ain't no 'son of a gun,' ex-champ speaks on King of Kong

Billy Mitchell ain't no 'son of a gun,' ex-champ speaks on King of Kong originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 May 2007 19:57:00 EST. We see two possibilities regarding this list of Wii games that "will be coming out" according to WiiYou.com. First: they scooped the entire world and got an exclusive look at a list of unannounced Wii games that nobody has heard anything at all about. Second, they didn't.

We're looking at the list, and it seems to be about half educated guessing and half dreaming. Call us cynics, but we're going to wait for verification before we go put our money down on F-Zero or Metroid Xterme.

Of course Sega Nerds latched on to the listing for Shadow the Hedgehog 2, but, in our minds, that's not the biggest news item on the list. We'd be more interested in hearing about the two Zelda games. Check after the post break for the full list.
Continue reading Rumor alert: Pretty much everything you could think of

Rumor alert: Pretty much everything you could think of originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 May 2007 10:55:00 EST. Much like how Rare permanently left their mark on DK through his character design, the rap has been irrevocably stuck to the character. Having the horrifying song stuck in our heads is the price we pay for playing Donkey Kong 64 or Super Smash Bros. Another week of releases on the Virtual Console. From platformer to beat-em-up to shmup, this week's VC installment defies genre and platform boundaries and instead opts to snuggle up together, a matted pile of monkey fur, rollerblades and ... lazers?

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Because Donkey Kong didn't appeal to the kids anymore, here comes Diddy Kong! He's young, he's edgy, he's a monkey (take that you big gorilla!). This sequel to Rare's mega-hit was well received by critics and fans of monkeys in red caps alike, which camp were you in?

Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): SoR2 introduced one innovative new element to the beat-em-up genre ... a kid on rollerblades. It took a room full of doctoral students twelve months to top that idea for Streets of Rage 3: a boxing kangaroo. Be patient, we're sure it's coming.

Blazing Lazers (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Marketing misspellings have never been so kool. Clamber into that Gunhed Star Fighter, collect powur-uhps, and chute the bad guise invading Urth.

And while it needs to be threaded by a capable hand, even Donkey Kong can be woven into a compelling canvas that examines the comically-profound idiosyncrasies that drive human competition. The King of Kong, director Seth Gordon's first feature, is a remarkable film that documents the little-seen niche of competitive gaming, as waged on '80s-era, coin-op arcade machines.

"That ape is very, very cunning, and he will do what he needs to, to stop you," warns a Funspot regular, squeezed into a t-shirt emblazoned with a geeky kung fu joke. The same could be said of Billy Mitchell, the film's antagonist, a blown-dry Machismo americanus and heir to the Rickey's World Famous [Hot] Sauce empire. Mitchell (above), whose 3-letter high score handle (typically one's initials) is U-S-A (notice the Liberty tie?), is stiff and threatening, at least to the mild-mannered circle he maintains a firm grip on. He regards his "Video Game Player of the [20th] Century" title as a symbol of patriotic heroism. Speaking of symbols, Mitchell's wife's cleavage is paraded on screen like a tangible manifestation of his ballooned ego, which is predictably deflated by Gordon's touching narrative of the first true challenger of the Donkey Kong high score; a score set by Mitchell more than two decades ago.
Continue reading Joystiq review: The King of Kong (film)

Joystiq review: The King of Kong (film) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 12:28:00 EST. This corroborates an IGN report to the same effect, and is also totally, totally rad. Here's the full list of Nintendo's planned 2007 releases. Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race is slated for June 28, and the rest are all "2007":
Keep checking with us for news of the inevitable delays of about half of these. Seriously, that's a lot of first-party Nintendo games for just half a year or so. Aw, we just made ourselves sad with our own skepticism. Still, if half of this stuff does get released in Japan this year, it'll be great news and do a pretty good job of ending any drought that may or may not be happening.

Update: fixed some italics and formatting.
'The big three' ARE coming in 2007 (to Japan) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2007 11:25:00 EST. Now, thanks to the announcement of Donkey Kong Bongo Blast on the Wii you can enjoy all the bongo action without putting your poor hands and wrists through the stress of actually having to play the bongos.

Details on the game, which was originally revealed a year ago for the 'Cube, were found in Famitsu scans by The Wiire. (The only thing worse than bongos: Titles created specifically for the Wii.) The new bongo title is a racing game where you'll shake the Wiimote and Nunchuk to accelerate, shake one harder than the other to turn and lift both to jump. Now, doesn't that sound a lot more fun than playing with some dumb old bongos? There's a four-person multiplayer mode, so you can spare your friends the palm soreness too! There's no mention of the game supporting the GameCube's bongo controller and we sure hope it stays that way when the game's released in Japan on June 28. We don't know if there will be a U.S. release yet, but we'll keep our reddened, bongo-battered fingers crossed.
New DK bongo game does away with pesky bongos originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 11:30:00 EST. Players will shake their remotes and nunchucks at the same time to accelerate, rattle one of the controllers when steering to the left or right, and lift both pieces to jump.

This modified control setup makes a lot of sense, but does it sound fun? In our opinion, this seems like it would have been better left on the GameCube. It'd be appreciated if developer Paon would give us the choice to use our old bongos, but with no mention of the option yet for the, it's doubtful.
DK Bongo Blast's bothersome controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Apr 2007 10:45:00 EST. Watching The A*Team reruns between classes, inviting everyone who came down the hall to play some Smash Bros., spending all day making giant tributes to classic games ...

Well, okay. We never made a huge Donkey Kong mural in the windows of one of the college's buildings using nothing but Post-Its. Luckily, a group of UC Santa Cruz students stepped in and took the job upon themselves. The bar has officially been raised for college timewasting. Some extremely inventive and intrepid students at UC Santa Cruz decided to recreate a scene from Donkey Kong on the side of their E2 building on campus, using nothing but colored Post-It notes. The result is a comparitive study in awesomeness and the power of procrastination. We can only imagine that this was spawned during some late-night "we should be working on that paper ..." session.

The finished product is fairly impressive. Check out more pictures here, and the Livejournal entry with even more pictures here. As one LJ commenter summed up nicely, "Pretty rad especially considering they were either in diapers or not even born when this game was popular." We're waiting on the inevitable YouTube video showing the construction of this thing, sped up and set to some popular alternative song.
Donkey Kong scales college, students search for hammers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 17:28:00 EST.
