If you're a stone-cold psychopath whose masochistic gaming tendencies push you away from ... well, normal-people games and into the cold embrace of impossible games, then the unavailability of an English port for <em>Takeshi's Challenge</em> has probably been a sore point for you. We probably shouldn't encourage your self-destruction, but you should know that a few kind souls have translated the bizarre NES title for your localized enjoyment.<br />
<br />
The localization comes from ROM modder KingMike (via <a href="http://tinycartridge.com/post/14916990402/takeshis-challenge-translated">Tiny Cartridge</a>). Before looking into acquiring the game, though, we'd suggest you also find an English language strategy guide to help you, because this game was made by the Devil.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/29/one-of-the-hardest-nes-games-ever-translated-to-english/">One of the hardest NES games ever translated to English</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Dec 2011 03:15:00 EST. Whenever a new Wii game comes out, players set to work opening up the PC-based Dolphin emulator, upscale the graphics to HD resolution, and take screenshots for us to drool over -- like the <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword"><em>Skyward Sword</em></a> images posted on the software's <a href="http://forums.dolphin-emulator.com/showthread.php?tid=19897&amp;pid=180120#pid180120">forum</a>.<br />
<br />
The normally soft, watercolor-y backgrounds look a little strange in HD -- we can't decide if it's <em>more</em> of the intended effect, or just oddly blurry. But there's no such conflict when it comes to the characters -- they look amazing. We're just going to cross our fingers for upscaling functionality when the Wii U comes along.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/17/the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-in-hd-thanks-to-emulation/">The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, in HD thanks to emulation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 18:15:00 EST. <br />
Sure, it seems easy enough: Play your Wii games on an Android tablet with an Xbox 360 controller. Technology! But underneath that simple premise is a complicated reality. First, you need to run the Wii games on a PC using the open-source Dolphin emulator. From there, you're going to stream the video to the Android tablet using the Splashtop Remote Desktop HD app on Android. YouTuber Obiwan222222 tossed an Xbox 360 controller in, but it's unclear if he's controlling the tablet's VNC client with it, or the PC directly (we're guessing the latter).<br />
<br />
If this sounds similar to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/12/gamestop-launching-branded-android-gaming-tablet-next-year/">GameStop's planned tablet</a>, featuring Spawn Labs-powered retail game streaming, or OnLive's upcoming tablet "Player" software, we agree. Mostly, it seems like the future ... a laggy, buggy future but the future nevertheless. Technology!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/19/technology-play-wii-on-an-android-tablet-with-an-xbox-360-contr/">Technology: Play Wii on an Android tablet with an Xbox 360 controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 21:20:00 EST. PSX4Droid, the PSOne emulator for Android that <a href="http://www.smartkeitai.com/psx4droid-hits-3-0-now-free-open-source-project/">got the smackdown from Google</a> recently, has found a surefire way of getting around the ban: Go free and open source. <a href="http://www.smartkeitai.com/psx4droid-hits-3-0-now-free-open-source-project/">The latest version of the software</a> does just that, skipping out on Google's market completely and putting both the app and <a href="https://github.com/zodttd/libpsx">the source code</a> online for anyone to download and check out.<br />
<br />
Developer "ZodTTD" says that the original Sony complaint only had to do with a trademarked logo that had snuck into the app's icon, but since then, Google has closed both his Android Market and CheckOut accounts, leaving him unable to publish any apps. As a result, he's self-publishing PSX4Droid, and will be exploring other third-party markets to sell the app in. In the meantime, you can go enjoy the new version, which adds better compatibility and performance, though save files from the previous version will no longer work.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/playstation-emulator-for-android-goes-free-and-open-source/">PlayStation emulator for Android goes free and open source</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 00:30:00 EST. With the launch of Sony Ericsson's Android-powered "PlayStation Phone," the <a href="http://xwww.joystiq.com/tag/xperia-play">Xperia Play</a>, supposedly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/13/xperia-play-in-u-s-in-early-spring-on-verizon-first/">right around the corner</a>, Google has <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/53194505553317888">pulled the plug</a> on a prominent PSOne emulator for its mobile OS. According to its author, "zodttd," PSX4Droid was removed from the Android Market without warning due to a "Content Policy violation," though he suspects it has more to do with Sony's imminent smart phone offering. "Sony's Xperia Play must be coming soon," <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/53195543022813184">tweeted</a> the dev, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/53205409875501056">adding</a> that, "The timing is suspicious with no remedy."<br />
<br />
As for alternatives to the Android Market, PSX4Droid's maker <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/zodttd/status/53200501050851328">says</a> he's a "bit worried to go to Amazon App Store" since "people who own the Market version would have to buy it again to update." Meanwhile, another PSOne emulator for Android, fpse, remains available on the Market. We've contacted Sony for its response to the app's removal and are awaiting comment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/playstation-emulator-pulled-from-android-market-dev-suggests-xp/">PlayStation emulator pulled from Android Market, dev suggests Xperia Play to blame</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 21:30:00 EST. The Android platform is no stranger to emulators, but there aren't too many apps that possess as much polish as <a href="http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2011/03/04/n64oid-emulator-for-android-review-and-gameplay-video/">N64oid</a>. It runs at a surprisingly stable framerate and, best of all, you can pair a Wiimote to the device for more precise controls. The iControlPad -- a peripheral we first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/if-it-looks-like-a-ds-and-plays-like-a-ds/">learned about in 2008</a> -- is still alive, kicking, and <a href="http://www.icontrolpad.com/order">ready to be ordered</a> for $74.99 before its initial February 16 ship date.<br />
<br />
The device attaches a simple Bluetooth game pad to your smartphone of choice using various clamps, which currently support iPhones, Blackberry Touch, HTC Dream, T-Mobile G1 and a handful of other devices. It's designed to make emulators on jailbroken phones much easier to play -- though the official site for the iControlPad admits, "software for your phone may be thin on the ground at first, and we encourage you to ask your favorite developers to support it." Also, being forced to de-clamp your phone to receive a call is going to be the nerdiest thing you've ever done in public. Buyer beware!<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/the-icontrolpad-clamps-a-controller-to-your-phone/">The iControlPad clamps a controller to your phone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 05:00:00 EST. This seems like a pretty natural fit -- the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-phone">PlayStation Phone</a>, which, hilariously enough, still hasn't been formally acknowledged by Sony, was recently <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/news/playstation-phone-is-real-runs-ps1-games">captured on video</a> running a PSOne emulator Android application called ROM Buddy PSX. It should be stressed that the handheld (which has supposedly been branded the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/22/reports-suggest-playstation-phone-called-xperia-play-to-be-re/">Xperia Play</a>) doesn't have this functionality built in -- the video is simply demonstrating how the Play's slide-out gamepad can be used to interact with the App, and the zombies therein.<br />
<br />
Of course, that doesn't make the video any less <em>dead sexy</em>. Check out the video after the jump to see the PlayStation Phone living up to its unofficial name, playing ROMs of <em>Resident Evil 2</em> and <em>Rage Racer</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/playstation-phone-caught-on-video-playing-unofficial-psone-andro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PlayStation Phone caught on video playing unofficial PSOne Android app</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/10/playstation-phone-caught-on-video-playing-unofficial-psone-andro/">PlayStation Phone caught on video playing unofficial PSOne Android app</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 12:35:00 EST. Lost Levels, a website dedicated to pulling unreleased video games out of the void of obscurity, recently <a href="http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=2471">obtained</a> a pretty epic find: An alleged prototype build of the original, Famicom version of <em>The Legend of Zelda</em>. What's different about this early build? Well, apparently, while the retail version of <em>Zelda</em> was responsible for crushing the spirits of many a lesser gamer, this prototype build was designed to be played by sweet, little <em>babies</em>.<br />
<br />
The difficulty of the early version of the game appears to be fairly reduced, as the prototype features a much more liberal rate of rupee distribution and an easier palette of enemies compared to the retail release, as evidenced by the screenshot comparison above (prototype on the left). If you've got the right emulator, you can download and play the prototype <em>right now</em> -- or, if you're not in the dungeon-diving mood, you can check more details about the <em>Zelda </em>prototype on <a href="http://tcrf.net/Proto:The_Legend_of_Zelda">The Cutting Room Floor wiki</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/28/alleged-legend-of-zelda-prototype-released/">Alleged Legend of Zelda prototype released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 11:30:00 EST. Placing SNES games on your iPad is an <em>extremely</em> simple process. All you have to do is lay your iPad with the screen facing upwards on a flat surface, then start piling on your cartridges. You can really only stack around 20 games on there before things start getting precarious, though, so make sure you don't overload it.<br />
<br />
Now, if you want to actually <em>play</em> those games, you'll need to follow <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5584439/how-to-play-snes-on-your-ipad-in-four-easy-steps">Lifehacker's fairly easy four-step guide</a>. Of course, it involves a bit of jailbreaking and emulating, so if you prefer to keep your operation legit, you may just want to continue playing your SNES games on their native platform. Check out <a href="http://lifehacker.com/5584439/how-to-play-snes-on-your-ipad-in-four-easy-steps">Lifehacker</a> for the detailed guide, or watch the accompanying video explanation posted after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/how-to-put-snes-games-on-your-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How to put SNES games on your iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/how-to-put-snes-games-on-your-ipad/">How to put SNES games on your iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 00:00:00 EST. If you're having some trouble whittling your Brain Age down to that elusive 20-year-old benchmark, a clever player named <a href="http://tasvideos.org/2735S.html">Ryuto has developed</a> a sure-fire method of lowering that all important number: Cheat. Or, better yet, cheat while drawing fun doodles of Nintendo trademarks.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/10/three-plus-eight-equals-yoshi-how-to-cheat-at-brain-age/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Three plus eight equals Yoshi: How to cheat at Brain Age</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/10/three-plus-eight-equals-yoshi-how-to-cheat-at-brain-age/">Three plus eight equals Yoshi: How to cheat at Brain Age</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Jul 2010 22:00:00 EST. With a miniscule $2.50 price tag and bluetooth support, which allows you to control the emulator with a Wii remote, it would be a pretty great deal. If, you know, it didn't run at a <em>handful</em> of frames per second.<br />
<br />

Remember that Wii emulator that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/wii-emulator-boosts-visuals-to-720p-hd/">boosted the graphics up to 720p</a>? Thanks to a recent update, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-galaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> is now playable on the emulator -- known as Dolphin (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube#Hardware">get it?</a>) -- and we have to admit, it <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=16546261#post16546261">looks pretty gorgeous</a>. Granted, <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> was no graphical slouch in the first place, but the extra <em>resomolutions</em> certainly add to the overall experience, and it gives us an idea of what a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-hd">Wii HD</a> console would be capable of producing.<br /><br />Check out a video of the <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> running in HD after the break (don't forget to turn on HD in the player). If you're hoping to see a few text-filled blue screens or play a few games that have reached the American legal drinking age on your iPhone, you're going to have to wait -- perhaps indefinitely. Mobile developer Manomio (of iPhone <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Flashback/">Flashback</a></em> fame), together with Danish studio Kiloo Aps have <a href="http://manomio.com/index.php/blog/commodore_64_submitted_to_appstore">crafted an eerily accurate simulacrum</a> of the keyboard-equipped hardware on Apple's cellular device -- unfortunately, their submission of the app was recently shot down by the fruit-themed hardware juggernaut.<br /><br />The legally licensed project (which has been in development for over a year) was denied due to a clause in the iPhone SDK agreement which states, "an Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means." As the program would allow users to "boot" C64 disks, it violates this clause -- then again, as <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2009/06/20/full-commodore-64-emulator-rejected-from-app-store/">mobile gaming news site Touch Arcade points out</a>, a few iPhone apps do the same thing, such as <em>Frotz</em>, an app which loads and runs interactive novels.<br /><br />Will the Commodore rise again? Or will the man continue to keep it down? Only time will tell.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/20/commodore64-iphone-app-finished-denied-by-apple/">Commodore64 iPhone app finished, denied by Apple</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 20 Jun 2009 21:30:00 EST. Gaming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/emulation/">emulation</a> isn't exactly the <em>most legal</em> activity you can take up -- as such, we can't help but admire the bravado of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/chinavision-cvfh-n03-4g-portable-emulator-indulges-your-retro-ga/">Chinavision's brilliantly named device.</a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/chinavision-cvfh-n03-4g-portable-emulator-indulges-your-retro-ga/"> CVFH-N03-4G</a>, pictured above. Housed within its minuscule frame is the ability to emulate games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Sega Genesis, SNK Neo-Geo and Capcom's arcade platforms, CPS1 and CPS2. It also plays a number of audio, video and image formats, and apparently serves as an e-book reader using text-to-speech technology.<br /><br />In other words, <a href="http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.php/pName/multi-platform-portable-gaming-entertainment-station/">for just $87.31</a>, you can pick up a device that's capable of playing every form of pirated media known to mankind. Lamentably, in the current console generation, Nintendo decided to turn away from the popular strategy of juicing the visual capabilities of its hardware to eye-searing levels. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/renebarahona">YouTube user renebarahona</a> recently gave us a taste of what HD Wii would have been like by cranking up the visuals of a few titles to 720p using the Dolphin emulator on PC. We've got two examples, <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl </em>and <em>Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King</em>, posted after the break (be sure to turn on HD mode).<br /><br />We're not advocating the shameless <span style="font-style: italic;">emularceny</span> of Wii titles, though it is interesting to see how these games look with a bit extra graphical endowment. To use <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/12/another-side-to-chris-heckers-duct-tape-rant/">a standard rate of exchange</a>, it's about the visual equivalent of <em>three </em> GameCubes duct-taped together -- maybe even <em>three-and-a-half</em>. We're not quite certain.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173489">IGN</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/wii-emulator-boosts-visuals-to-720p-hd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii emulator boosts visuals to 720p HD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/29/wii-emulator-boosts-visuals-to-720p-hd/">Wii emulator boosts visuals to 720p HD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 29 Mar 2009 21:30:00 EST. Really, it's quite disgusting.<br /><br />Alekmaul hasn't revealed much about the project, except that it's coming this September sporting a 60 fps frame rate, likely without any sound due to technical difficulties implementing the audio. For now, you'll have to settle with the screenshots below!<br /><br />If this is your first time hearing about the game, <em>Black Tiger</em> was originally released to arcades in 1987 before later being ported to various home computer systems and game compilations for the PSP/PS2/Xbox 360. Designed to be the spiritual successor to <em>Ghosts 'n Goblins</em>, the game stars a barbarian on a quest to slay three dragons.<br /><br /><br />

Most of us have probably dabbled around with a Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator before, but have you ever crammed one into a TARDIS? Those things are supposed to be bigger on the inside than the outside. Anyhow, one man decided that having a dedicated stand-up gaming cabinet wasn't enough, so he built this pillar of geek awesomeness.<br /><br />Check out the two different sections, one on the building of the iconic <a href="http://www.asciimation.co.nz/tardis/">blue Police Box</a>, and the other on the <a href="http://www.asciimation.co.nz/tardis/page2.html#Introduction">console</a>. He even had the 7th doctor, Sylvester McCoy, autograph the thing. Is it still a sin to covet thy neighbor's sci-fi gaming cabinet? <p> The PSP homebrew scene continues to expand to new, uncharted territories. This time, it appears drkIIRaziel of <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=125872">DCEmu</a> has created a Dreamcast emulator for the PSP. Considering how powerful the hardware is, this seems like a rather futile effort, as evidenced by the first footage (seen above). While it will unlikely prove to be fruitful, this exercise shows the incredible skill and talent found in the community.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/dreamcast-emulator-for-psp-real-really-slow/">Joystiq</a>]</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/psp-gets-incredibly-slow-dreamcast-emulator/">PSP gets incredibly slow Dreamcast emulator</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 22:42:00 EST. The portbuster may have arrived -- according to the French TeamShift site, they've created an early version of a PSP emulator for Wii. Normally, we wouldn't report on such a thin rumor (there's only a single suspect photograph and a statement), but the idea of surpassing the flood of ports and going directly to the source is actually pretty amusing.<br /><br />But, since it's probably fake, the whole issue is likely moot.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/psp-emulator-for-wii-windows-wip-121728.html">DCEmu</a>; thanks, Craig!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/rumor-play-psp-games-on-wii-before-theyre-ported/">Rumor: Play PSP games on Wii before they're ported</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST. Have you got downloaded emulators? Well, thanks to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbqFQXmQMKU">this YouTube video</a>, now you can see how to get an emulator up and running. Of course, it's a German video, so we have next to no idea what's going on -- but we notice there's some quick option-swapping whilst Swap Magic is loading up. This is far from the only video on YouTube displaying emulators on the PS3, but it's interesting to see just how simple the process appears. Anyone had any luck with this?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/swap-magic-running-genesis-emulator-on-ps3/">Swap Magic running Genesis emulator on PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 22:00:00 EST. <br />What a great time to be a handheld shoot-em-up fan! On the commercial front, <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nanostray/">Nanostray 2</a> just hit store shelves and <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ketsui/">Ketsui DS</a> is still on the way. Homebrew gamers had their lives changes by <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-wings">Super Wings's</a> release last week, and now they have two more titles to play with -- <span style="font-style: italic;">OpenTyrian DS</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">World Reborn</span>. <br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">OpenTyrian DS</span> (v0.2) is a port of vertical-scrolling shooter <span style="font-style: italic;">Tyrian</span>, originally a PC title. Players pick up cash while blasting their way through stages which they can then spend on ship modifications in between levels. There's a huge variety of upgrades available for purchase -- primary and secondary weapons (with 11 levels), "sidekicks," shields, energy generators, and even alternate ships. If you have a flaschart handy, you definitely need to try this one out.<br /><br />As for <span style="font-style: italic;">World Reborn</span>, this horizontal-scrolling <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/SHMUP/">SHMUP</a> (with an RPG leveling system) was originally intended as a commercial GBA release and even had a DS sequel planned for a minute, but the game never made it to the retail market. Though developer NeoPong (now defunct) had plans to publish <span style="font-style: italic;">World Reborn</span> with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DSI-Games/">DSI Games</a>, that deal fell through, and the studio has decided to put up the ROM for free rather than pack it away in a warehouse, <span style="font-style: italic;">Indiana Jones-style</span>. Jump past the post break for a trailer of the game. <br /><br /><a href="http://vespenegas.com/tyrian.html">Read</a> - Download OpenTyrian DS<br /><a href="http://www.neopong.com/">Read</a> - Download World Reborn<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/free-shmups-opentyrian-ds-and-world-reborn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free SHMUPs: OpenTyrian DS and World Reborn</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/free-shmups-opentyrian-ds-and-world-reborn/">Free SHMUPs: OpenTyrian DS and World Reborn</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST. This update (<a href="http://stardev.ton-hebergement-gratuit.com/StarLite.nds">version 0.03</a>) to the homebrew <em>StarCraft</em> game for the DS introduces two important features to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RTS/">RTS</a> port: 3D sprites and a local multiplayer mode.<br /><br />This limited build seems more buggy than usual -- we couldn't even get it running on an emulator -- but if you have two sets of DSes and flashcarts handy, you should be able to test out <em>StarLite's</em> two-player setup by following this series of steps:<br />
<ol>
    <li>Download Starlite.nds and <a href="http://stardev.ton-hebergement-gratuit.com/StarLite.nds">equipe.txt</a></li>
    <li>Copy StarLite.nds onto both of your flashcarts</li>
    <li>Copy equipe.txt onto the root of one cart, making sure the only text in the file is the number "1"</li>
    <li>Copy equipe.txt onto the root of another cart, making sure the only text in the file is the number "2"</li>
    <li>Boot up the DSes and load the game on both systems<br /></li>
    <li>Mutter with satisfaction, "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/01/excellent-burns-0-dsf.gif">Excellent</a>," while tenting your fingers<br /></li>
</ol>

With no official plans announced for a DS port of <em>StarCraft</em> or any of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/04/some-guy-at-blizzard-loves-nintendo/">Blizzard's</a> other PC games, two French homebrew developers have begun working on bringing the popular <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RTS/">RTS</a> to the handheld themselves, titling the game <em>StarLite</em>.<br /><br />A limited demo (<a href="http://heuer-michael.com/starlite/starlite.nds">version 0.1</a>) is available for you to test out in an emulator or flashcart of your choice, and, while it's clear there's still a lot of work ahead for the project, it's impressive how much the two-man crew has already accomplished in just three weeks of development. So far, players can select and direct units via touchscreen, build simple structures, and produce additional units. There are even a few enemy troops to attack.<br /><br />The team plans to continue their work, eventually implementing the rest of the units/structures and a WiFi ad-hoc multiplayer mode for two players. To do all that, however, they'll need some help from several more programmers, so don't be afraid to volunteer your skills to the effort! Hit the gallery below for more early screenshots from <em>StarLite</em>.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/03/wish-upon-a-starlite-starcraft-homebrew/">Wish upon a StarLite: StarCraft homebrew</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. <br />Are you one of the four roguelike fans out there? If so, and if you also can't wait for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shiren-the-wanderer">Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer's</a></em> February release, why not play <em>NetHackDS</em> or <em>Powder</em> -- two recently-updated homebrew dungeon crawler ports -- in the meantime? <br /><br />While <em>NetHackDS</em> has the edge in terms of "graphics" and name recognition, <em>Powder</em> has the advantage of being immediately playable in an emulator, so even if you don't have a flashcart, you can still enjoy the addictive game ... if you consider dying a dozen times while trying to figure out how to live longer than five minutes enjoyable.<br /><br /><strong>See also</strong>: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/nethack-your-ds/">Nethack your DS</a><br /><br /><a href="http://frodo.dyn.gno.org/~brettk/NetHackDS">Read</a> - NetHackDS 1.12C<br /><a href="http://www.zincland.com/powder/index.php?pagename=release">Read</a> - Powder 094<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/29/roguelike-updates-remind-us-to-play-roguelikes/">Roguelike updates remind us to play roguelikes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2007 12:30:00 EST. The PSP scene continues to develop new and exciting ways to use the PSP. Recently, a Japanese homebrew developer by the name of "SofiyaCat" has ported the Nintendo DS emulator DeSmuME to PSP. However, don't expect it to offer anything playable. Framerates are stuck in the single digits in this early, unoptimized code. We're not exactly sure if a virtual touch-screen will be offered in the future, but it appears that this is more a display of coding prowess, rather than an attempt at making something the masses can truly embrace.<br /><br />We're no advocates of piracy, though. Although we're impressed by this effort, we can't say that this will render our DS systems obsolete. Besides, we have a lot of widescreen, non-touching games to play in the coming months.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/ds-emulator-on-a-psp-just-because/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/psp-emulates-ds-games-at-whopping-4fps/">PSP emulates DS games at whopping 4fps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 18:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Japanese <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/homebrew">homebrew</a> genius SofiyaCat has achieved the spectacularly pointless: DS games running on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/ds-daily-the-great-war/">PSP</a>. The blurry image above demonstrates a PSP running the homebrew game <a href="http://www.dev-fr.org/index.php/topic,865.0.html"><em>GeoWars</em></a>. The emulation is slow, the compatibility is apparently terrible, and, of course, the PSP lacks a touchscreen, but we should let the poor thing have its day. Now somebody needs to get to work figuring out a way for us to play the <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/hands-on-castlevania-dracula-x-chronicles/"><em>Dracula X Chronicles</em></a> on the DS. <br /><br />We don't advocate piracy, but there's no harm in testing some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/31/get-out-and-download-this-game/">homebrew</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/friday-video-two-ds-lites-and-a-microphone/">games</a> on a PSP. Watch the video and see how it's arrived already. Granted. it would be a lot better if you could swivel this thing into landscape mode to really make it work like an old-school Nintendo controller, but the fact that this is up and running is fairly impressive itself.<br /><br />The Unofficial Apple Weblog has the <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2007/08/06/nes-emulator-on-the-iphone/">deets</a> on this <a href="http://code.google.com/p/iphonenes/">emulator</a>, and we're looking forward to playing around with it. The only problem is, with a screen that small, can anyone really see what they're playing? Not if the controls stay like this, but we're hoping things get turned a little sideways and they crack the sound issue.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/iphone-nes-emulator-zomg-hello-mario/">iPhone + NES emulator = zOMG, hello Mario</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 09:00:00 EST. Well that was fast. It was just Saturday that hackers at <a href="http://www.noobz.eu/joomla/news/beware-of-the-illuminati.html">Noobz</a> found a buffer overflow exploit in the puzzle classic <em>Lumines</em> that allowed hackers to run a <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/06/23/lumines-unlocks-homebrew-on-firmware-3-50/">simple Hello World program</a> on any PSP firmware, including the <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/05/31/firmware-3-50-now-available-on-network-update/">recently released version 3.5</a>. By Sunday, our blogging brethren at <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/06/24/lumines-sales-up-nearly-6000-percent-since-exploit/">PSPFanboy</a> caught the above screengrab of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/movers-and-shakers/videogames">Amazon's Movers and Shakers page</a> showing the game's sales jumping a ludicrous 5900 percent in just one day. As of this posting Monday morning, the same page shows a more moderate 750 percent rise pushing the two-year-old title to the second-highest spot on Amazon's video game sales charts.<br /><br />We understand that there are a lot of people out there that want to exploit this new, uh, exploit to run homebrew code on their PSPs. What we don't understand is how there can be so many PSP owners out there that don't already own <em>Lumines</em>. How do you buy a PSP and not immediately pick up this hauntingly beautiful musical puzzler? We suppose there could be some PSP owners out there who eschew UMDs altogether for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/game-boy-emulator-for-psp-adds-a-dash-of-color/">legally</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/05/nes-emulator-for-psp-with-wi-fi-multiplayer/">questionable</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/30/todays-hottest-game-video-neo-geo-emulator-on-the-psp-gone-wif/">emulators</a>, but really, if you need a firmware hack to justify shelling out a few bucks for such sublime puzzle goodness then we don't want to be your friend anymore.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/25/psp-firmware-hack-drives-lumines-sales/">PSP firmware hack drives Lumines sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:28:00 EST. A little something different: it's not a DS, but it is at least <em>similar</em> in that it's a handheld device that plays Nintendo games. If there's only one thing we want in life, it's the ability to have hundreds of NES games on hand at any moment. Let's forget the legal issues right now and just marvel at the technical wonder of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=cell+phone">cell phone</a> that not only comes preloaded with a NES emulator, but is designed with a reasonable button layout to play them.<br /><br />Welcome to the future. If you had told us twenty years ago that there was a portable device that could store and play NES games, we would have been impressed. If you had told us that it would also have a TV-out, we would say 'neat.' But there is no way we would have conceived of the idea that such functions would be extras on a telephone that also has a digital camera. <br /><br />Okay, we'll stop forgetting now and get to the major problem: downloading NES ROMs is illegal and <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/corp/faqs/legal.html">violates Nintendo's copyright</a>. Even backing up games you own is questionable. Oh, well, this phone probably won't make it to the US anyway, so we won't be forced into any moral dilemmas.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wirelessinfo.com/content/Phone-targeted-specifically-for-original-Nintendo.htm">Wireless Info</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/first-post-on-nes-emulating-phone-fanboy/">First post on NES-Emulating Phone Fanboy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. Just as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technicolor">Technicolor</a> added color to moving pictures, classic Game Boy gems await their colorized update. On the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/02/phil-harrison-gives-respect-to-the-homebrew-scene/">homebrew</a> front, a new video from <a href="http://forums.psphardwarehelp.com/showthread.php?tid=184&amp;page=1">PSPHardwareHelp</a> (after the cut) shows <span style="font-style: italic;">Super Mario Land</span> running through an upcoming emulator for use on PSP. The notable difference between this and previous offerings is that this emulator converts black and white <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/03/when-a-psp-and-a-game-boy-make-love/">Game Boy</a> classics into full color. It's certainly a remarkable achievement, one that Nintendo may want to capitalize on if they ever (wisely) bring Game Boy classics into the Wii <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2007/03/22/wii-warm-up-more-consoles/">Virtual Console</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/adding-some-color-to-game-boy-emulation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Adding some color to Game Boy emulation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/adding-some-color-to-game-boy-emulation/">Adding some color to Game Boy emulation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. We've been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/08/rumor-virtualpsp-lets-you-play-psp-games-on-you-pc/">tricked</a> by this tomfoolery before, and we're remaining cautious. <a href="http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/potemkin-released-new-psp-emulator-for-windows-62253.html">DCEmu</a> is reporting on a supposed experimental emulator that allows PSP games to be played in the Windows environment. "Potemkin" as the emulator is called is no longer being worked on by Ector due to "time constraints." Therefore, he's provided the source code for those interested to try and finish his project. (This does <em>not</em> mean that an end-user can effectively run a working program on their machine.) If this project comes to full fruition, Sony will certainly have a lot more to worry about: the piracy scene could potentially explode with a functional release of such an emulator. We'll have to stay tuned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/06/experimental-emulator-brings-psp-games-to-windows/">Experimental emulator brings PSP games to Windows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 May 2007 17:30:00 EST. Takeshi Shimada, a Nintendo employee who works on toll packages for developers, spoke about some of the upcoming projects he had in mind.<br /><br />In addition to updated handwriting and speech recognition software for the DS, Shimada is working on a host of tools for the Wii. First off is a Wii emulating technology for high-end PCs to mitigate the slow "loading time" of putting recent code and assets onto a Wii unit itself (if this ever gets leaked ... ). He's working on some "fur-shaders" (which might apply also to grass or carpet textures) and other graphical tools, and finally, an advanced text-to-speech system that seems to be <a href="http://sprinklergoes.ytmnd.com/">all the rage these days</a>.<br /><br />What does this mean to you? Though it was yanked in a matter of minutes, one new entry <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/19/psychonauts-will-be-playable-on-xbox-360/">stood out</a> like an atomic mushroom cloud in a serene, children's playground. Not to imply that <em>Psychonauts</em> is capable of <em>melting children</em> or flooding large masses of land with deadly radiation, but its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/20/psychonauts-still-not-guaranteed-to-be-xbox-360-compatible/">presence</a> was rather <em>devastating</em> to the psyche. <br /><br />In case you weren't aware (and clearly you aren't much of the time), Tim Schafer and his team at <a href="http://www.doublefine.com">Double Fine</a> did extraordinary things with <em>Psychonauts</em>, managing to take the seemingly incompatible platformer and adventure genres and mash them together like two pieces of clay. That's <em>before</em> they twisted the whole mess into a variety of amusing shapes.<br /><br />Oh, there's a whole bunch of other new games too. However, when asked about the exact release date of this December update, Microsoft warned us that the list is <strong>not final</strong>. "We'll have more news soon -- as I'm sure you're aware with any software development, things can change at any time so we want to make an announcement when we're sure we've got the final, solid list."<br /><br />View the non-final, slightly wobbly list of additions after the break.<br /><br />[Thanks Nick! Less than a week after its previous update, <a href="http://www.psp-hacks.com/2006/12/04/devhook-v051-with-fw-301-support/">DevHook</a> now emulates the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/22/sony-releases-new-3-01-firmware-a-day-after-3-00/">3.01 firmware</a> for users with homebrew-capable 1.50 PSPs. Until the next major firmware upgrade, it appears as though Sony's anti-homebrew efforts have been completely defeated.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/04/new-devhook-emulates-3-01-firmware/">New DevHook emulates 3.01 firmware</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Dec 2006 18:00:00 EST. It will apparently run "anything," including ISO, BIN, Z and ZNX files (whatever that means). There are a few bugs in this alpha release, but according to users, many games are completely playable and running at full-speed. With the homebrew community seemingly one-upping Sony, hopefully we'll see the official PSone download service hit American soon... and without the need for a PS3.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://modshark.com/">jamie</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/26/homebrew-psone-emulator-released/">Homebrew PSone emulator released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Nov 2006 15:25:00 EST.
