<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em><strong>Resident Evil 5</strong></em></a><br />
I've long been a fan of the <em>Resident Evil </em>series, and while the campaign here has problems and should <em>never</em> be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-daves-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. If you've been too frightened by the prospect of Alma's return (or too frightened by the prospect of dropping $50+ on her new game), know that <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/2862/">this weekend's Steam deal</a> is none other than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> and the recently released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/fear-2-gets-free-slow-mo-deathmatch-dlc-on-september-3/"><em>Reborn </em>DLC</a>. If you fall into the former grouping, we suggest you draw the shades, turn off your computer for the weekend and even take the phone off the hook <em>just to be safe</em>.<br />
<br />
However, if you're in the latter group, now's the time to pounce as Valve has slashed 50% off of the price of each, offering them at a reduced $24.99 and $4.99, respectively. You can't be in both groups though - if you spend the weekend hiding, you'll miss the deal which is available for "this weekend only." <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/steam-weekend-deal-f-e-a-r-2-and-reborn-dlc/">Steam Weekend Deal: F.E.A.R. 2 and Reborn DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 01:15:00 EST. Don't misunderstand, the sample of the single-player add-on looks really good. Heck, we'd even go so far as to say "great" if it didn't symbolize a project that was taking Monolith's attention from the <em>No One Lives Forever </em>sequel that <em>America needs</em>.<br /><br />But sadly for this newcomer, our heart (or at least the part of our heart reserved for <em>FEAR 2: Reborn</em> trailers) has already <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/fear-2s-reborn-dlc-priced-at-10/">been spoken for</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/fear-2-reborn-trailer-is-our-second-favorite/">FEAR 2: Reborn trailer is our second favorite</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 20:15:00 EST. We know what you're thinking. "Hey, aren't there <em>already</em> <em>Fight Night Round 4</em> and <em>FEAR 2</em> demos?" The answer to that question is ... yes. However, these are <em>new</em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/fight-night-round-4"><em>Fight Night Round 4</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>FEAR 2</em></a> demos. The new <em>Fight Night </em>demo adds the ability to punch using the face buttons instead of the right stick, so it might be worth a look for those who were turned off before. It also features a "body spamming fix." We're not sure what that is, but it sounds gross.<br />
<br />
The <em>FEAR 2</em> demo is actually pretty interesting, as it's a demo for the upcoming single-player DLC pack, "Reborn." It's not very common to see demos for an add-on, but it seems like a pretty good idea. If you're hankering to see what "Reborn" has in store, download the demo and give it a try. The DLC itself was originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">scheduled to release this month</a>, so it <em>should</em> be available any day now.<br />

Seven months after release, the game is experiencing a rebirth of sorts, through an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">upcoming single-player expansion</a> and brand new multiplayer update. "Slow-Mo Deathmatch," a staple of the first game, is finally coming to <em>FEAR 2</em> through a free update that will be available on September 3rd. Free? A price like that is certainly going to make us revisit the game.<br />
<br />
In addition to toiling on the various <em>FEAR 2</em> updates, Monolith has created this hilarious and thematically-inappropriate trailer for the update. Watch as the magic of "SCIENCE" explains the process behind this DLC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/12/fear-2-gets-free-slow-mo-deathmatch-dlc-on-september-3/">FEAR 2 gets free Slow-Mo Deathmatch DLC on September 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Next month, Monolith's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> will receive an injection of fresh DLC, <a href="http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/100/1008718p1.html">IGN</a> reveals. This time around, the content won't be focused on multiplayer. Instead, <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn</em> adds four new single player missions, with the player controlling replica soldier Foxtrot 813 through an all-new adventure.<br /><br />There's no word on exact date or price, but we'll be sure to inform all eight of you that care when we find out.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/07/29/single-player-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-coming-in-august/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/29/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-flips-the-script-in-august/">New F.E.A.R. 2 DLC flips the script in August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 21:10:00 EST. Sometimes it's better not to ask questions, which is the approach we're taking with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GameStop/">GameStop</a>'s sale on several solid titles for $20 new -- and not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/11/law-of-the-game-lawyer-explores-gamestop-used-vs-new-controve/">GameStop's definition of "new,"</a> but actually <em>new</em>. The sale started today, for both online and stores, and goes until August 2. Highlights include:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Street Fighter IV</em> (Xbox 360 and PS3)</li>
    <li><em>FEAR 2: Project Origin</em> (Xbox 360 and PS3)</li>
    <li><em>Silent Hill Homecoming</em> (Xbox 360)</li>
    <li><em>MadWorld</em> (Wii)</li>
    <li><em>Donkey Kong Jungle Beat</em> (Wii)</li>
</ul>
The full list and more nitpicking details about the sale can be found over at <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/?f=1356">CAG</a>. Although many of the titles make sense as part of the sale (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lair/">Lair</a></em>), the big question is: Why <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/street-fighter-iv">Street Fighter IV</a></em>? Is Capcom planning to announce a <em>Turbo Hyper Fighting Alpha Remix Championship Beefcake Easy-Bake Snuggie Edition</em>?<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: We were curious to know if Capcom was invoved with the price drop. A company rep informed us, "We don't have input into these sales, they're entirely generated by Gamestop."</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/street-fighter-iv-fear-2-madworld-more-for-20-at-gamestop/">Street Fighter IV, FEAR 2, MadWorld, more for $20 at GameStop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 11:30:00 EST. The trailer shows off both new maps -- "Conductor" and "Decoy" -- and plenty of mechanized destruction courtesy of the game's power armor. The DLC will also come with new character skins, possibly making the price -- 540 MS points on XBL or $6.99 on PSN -- a little more palatable. This is one of those weird situations where we're not really sure we're talking to anybody, but here goes: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2 </em></a>is getting some new DLC, the "Armored Front" Map Pack on May 21. For 540 MS points on XBL or $6.99 on PSN, you'll get two maps, "Conductor" and "Decoy", (we've got descriptions after the break) as well as four interchangeable character heads, which is just creepy.<br /><br />But are you still playing <em>F.E.A.R. 2 </em>multiplayer? Or could Warner Bros. just as productively upload these maps to the darkest recesses of space? Speak up in the comments.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/14/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-armored-front-coming-may-21/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New F.E.A.R. 2 DLC, 'Armored Front' coming May 21</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/14/new-f-e-a-r-2-dlc-armored-front-coming-may-21/">New F.E.A.R. 2 DLC, 'Armored Front' coming May 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 May 2009 23:15:00 EST. Interactive is thinking small with its first DLC for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2">F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</a>, </em>due April 16. Small as in the comical scale of the "Toy Soldiers" map pack's levels, and small in price -- it'll be a <em>free</em> download via Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store.<br /><br />The DLC will include three maps: "Full Tilt," which places players inside a pinball machine; "Cockroach," which shrinks them down and sees them scurrying up walls; and "Recess," which is set within a sand castle. WBIE says the pack is the first of three it intends to release this year. Maps dedicated to Elite Power Armor combat will be coming in May, followed by additional single player levels by the end of the summer. No word on whether they'll be free, but we fear they won't be.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/free-f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers-map-pack-coming-april-16/">Free F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' map pack coming April 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/free-dlc-for-trivial-pursuit-tomb-raider-and-fear-2/">accidental release</a> of <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em> DLC on Xbox Live Marketplace caused some confusion -- especially after it was suddenly <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/f-e-a-r-2-maps-yanked-from-xblm-back-in-april/">pulled</a> hours after release. The "Toy Soldiers" DLC was, according to Monolith Productions, meant to release in April and best of all, was always meant to be free on both the Xbox 360 and PS3.<br /><br />As you can tell from the screenshots, the "Toy Soldiers" pack places players from a rather unique perspective. Shrunken down to miniature proporations, where players will duke it out in a pinball machine, hospital room, and playground.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/">F.E.A.R. 2 - Toy Soldiers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_cockroach_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430099"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_fulltilt_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers/#1430100"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/mp_recess_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/f-e-a-r-2-toy-soldiers-dlc-will-be-free-for-all-in-april/">F.E.A.R. 2 'Toy Soldiers' DLC will be free for all in April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 15:53:00 EST. Major Nelson of the clan Hryb <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/03/10/free-game-add-ons-now-available-trivial-pursuit-tomb-raider-and-f-e-a-r-2.aspx">sends word</a> that free DLC is available on XBLM for three very different types of games.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Trivial Pursuit</em>: Hundreds of new questions for movie buffs.</li>
    <li><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/tomb-raider-underworld"><em>Tomb Raider: Underworld</em></a>: Designer costume pack, created by designers and voted for by <em>Tomb Raider</em> fans.</li>
    <li><em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/fear-2">F.E.A.R. 2</a></em>: "Toy Soldiers" Map Pack, where players are inches tall and battle in a "pinball machine, a hospital lab room, and a playground sandbox." OK, that actually sounds cool.</li>

Go ahead, grab those and get to thinking, dressing and killing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/free-dlc-for-trivial-pursuit-tomb-raider-and-fear-2/">Trivial Pursuit, Tomb Raider and FEAR 2 receive free DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war"><em>Call of Duty: World At War</em></a> continues its slow descent down the UK Charts this week, ending up at number four, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> clings onto the number one spot for the millionth week in a row. New contender <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>FEAR 2</em></a> gives an admirable performance, making its way to the number two spot, though we suspect this may not last very long. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/house-of-the-dead-overkill"><em>House Of The Dead: Overkill</em></a> sadly didn't make the top ten, instead coming in at number 15. It's official -- when promoting video games, regular-sized advertising structures just don't cut it anymore. <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/first-littlebigplanet-billboard-on-ebay/"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em>'s bite-sized billboards</a> were a step in the right direction, though Warner Bros. just took the miniature advertising game to <a href="http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/02/11/fear-2-to-advertise-on-animals/">a smaller, mobile and more adorable level</a>. In the future, when rookie industry analysts inquire as to how <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=FEAR%202">F.E.A.R. 2</a></em> became the best-selling game of all time, their weathered superiors will become lost in a haze of nostalgia, muttering through a slight grin -- "<em>Catvertising</em>."<br /><br />If you live in foggy Londontown, keep an eye out over the next few days for black cats who are unknowingly promoting <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em>'s Friday the 13th release date. Before PETA flips their easily flippable lid, we should mention that the cats aren't being painted, or treated inhumanely. They're just wearing little <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em>-branded kitten coats, which you can order for your own <em>precious lil' guy</em>, provided you live in the London area, and you don't have <a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3424/3271579201_4daafd0e05.jpg?v=0">a morbidly obese house cat</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Ben S.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/11/f-e-a-r-2-advertising-with-billboard-infused-cats/">F.E.A.R. 2 advertising with billboard-infused cats</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Feb 2009 22:15:00 EST. Alma's back, and she wants to <em>mess you up</em>. We've been waiting long enough, and, finally, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=fear+2+project+origin"><em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em></a> has dropped. Before you take Alma on, maybe you should brush up on your knowledge of the game by checking out some of these reviews below. Just <em>a thought</em> ...<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/952/952883p1.html">IGN AU</a> (<strong>86/100</strong>): "We just wish Monolith had produced a slightly more progressive or challenging backdrop for the horror that is this game's mojo. It's absolutely worth playing, but that's the difference between a game that scores 9+ and a game that scores 8.6."</li>
    <li><a href="http://gameinformer.com/NR/exeres/088EC037-C8AE-420B-BA99-7ABB0650C7BA.htm">Game Informer</a> (<strong>84/100</strong>): "While the multiplayer is weak and the mood won't make people forget Dead Space any time soon, the solid action core makes it worth a play."</li>
    <li>PlayStation: The Official Magazine (<strong>80/100</strong>): "F.E.A.R. 2 emerges as an effective, entertaining FPS with a chiller story element, rather than a real survival horror shooter...Play with the lights dimmed, and don't be surprised if you end up squealing (on the inside) like a little girl." [Mar 2009, p.67]</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/fear-2-project-origin-review">Eurogamer</a> (<strong>50/100</strong>): "If you've never played a first-person shooter before, you'll probably be in love - this is as archetypal a corridor-shooter as has ever been made, and there's a reason why it works. But for anyone who's been running down corridors with shotguns for most of their adult life, this is so uninspired that you worry for the spark of Monolith's soul. You guys made "No One Lives Forever," remember? You're smart. You're better than this."</li>

After the break, you can view the latest <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44600.html"><em>Project </em><em>Origin </em>trailer</a> that recaps the tale of Alma, what the First Encounter Assault Recon team is all about and why everything has gone horribly, horribly wrong.<br /></div>

<br />Maybe it's just us, but we really feel for Alma and the situation she was put in. If we were in charge, we'd get her get cleaned up, make sure dinner was eaten by 7PM and have her in bed by 9PM. No joke, writing this post about today's <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/01/22/playstation-store-update-69/">PSN update</a> put the fear of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2-project-origin/">Alma</a> into us. In the parlance of the lolcats: she was in r computr, hackin r sistems. Every imaginable glitch that could go wrong ... did, but three hours later it's finally complete. This week, you can check out the demos for <em>F.E.A.R. 2 </em>and <em>WipEout HD</em>. We thought we would warn you so you can prepare the extra pair of trousers now. You'll need it, because Alma and the gang are headed back to your Xbox 360 in a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/16/f-e-a-r-2-scares-up-demo-january-22/">F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin demo</a> that arrives on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/XBLM/">XBLM</a> next Thursday, January 22. We don't know what the demo will contain, but we're guessing it will involve (virtual) shooting, (virtual) hallucinations and (very, very real) abject terror. What would you expect? It's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a>. Using its guerrilla marketing firm's psychic powers division, Warner Bros. Interactive made us prick our fingers and write on the walls in blood: a demo for <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em> is coming January 22nd. The press release Warner sent soon after was just as effective at getting the point across.<br /><br />The demo will be available to all on Xbox 360, PC and PS3 starting next week; however, the PS3 demo is available <em>right now</em> for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/qore">Qore</a> subscribers. The original <em>F.E.A.R.</em> garnered universal critical praise when it launched, but it seems like we've heard less and less about the subsequent installments in the series. In <a href="http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=204906">a recent interview with CVG</a>, Monolith's Dave Matthews, lead art designer for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=F.E.A.R.%202%3A%20Project%20Origin">F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</a></em>, blamed the <em>Extraction Point</em> and <em>Perseus Mandate</em> expansions (which were created by TimeGate studios) for "[killing] off a few" fans. Later in the interview, he did a positively <em>heart-melting</em> acoustic rendition of "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ_Nf7yGxbc">Crash Into Me</a>".<br />
<br />
Matthews' main qualm with the expansions is that TimeGate took the story in a direction that Monolith wouldn't have followed -- they took the focus away from the series' young, unsettling antagonist, Alma. With Monolith behind the PC version and console ports of <em>Project Origin</em>, Matthews is confident that the story will continue "the way we originally intended." This is great news for fans, and terribly unfortunate news for the faint of heart.<br />

Monolith's Dave Matthews, lead art designer for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/FEAR-2-Project-Origin/">F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</a></em>, says multiple expansions and console ports have likely cost the shooter franchise some fans. In an interview with <a href="http://computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=204906">CVG</a> a comment was made to Matthews that the TimeGate developed expansions and Day 1 Studios developed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear">console-ports</a> of the critically acclaimed shooter could be responsible for bringing new eyes to the horror-fueled FPS. "<span class="text_article_body">And killed off a few," Matthews noted.<br />
<br />
Matthews primary reason for the comment based on story decisions taken once the series was out of Monolith's hands. </span><span class="text_article_body">"[TimeGate] took the story in a direction that we didn't intend ... We look at <em>Extraction Point </em>and <em>Perseus Mandate</em> as an alternate universe," Matthews told CVG. </span><span class="text_article_body">"</span><span class="text_article_body"><em>F.E.A.R.</em> was about Alma, <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em> is about Alma, and we wanted to continue the story the way we originally intended."<br />
<br />
This time around <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Monolith/">Monolith</a>, who gained Xbox 360 experience from the <em>Condemned</em> series, has committed to develop all three version of the upcoming sequel. </span><span class="text_article_body">"While there will be some slight variations between the different versions ... our main goal is to make sure the experience is synonymous across all three platforms."</span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/27/matthews-ports-and-expansions-contributed-to-loss-of-fear-fans/">Matthews: Ports and expansions contributed to loss of FEAR fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 27 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST. Without requiring any edits, the previously "banned" <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear-2"><em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em></a> has received an MA15+ rating in Australia. The title was refused classification by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oflc">OFLC</a> last month, but the decision has now been reversed, following an appeal by publisher Warner Bros.<br /><br />Upon review, the classification board deemed that the violence in the game could be "accommodated within the MA15+ classification." Of course, none of these semi-regular <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/silent-hill-homecomings-aussie-exile-detailed-hopeful-release/">banning stories</a> would be happening if games in Australia had the option of an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/australia-making-r18-discussion-paper-public/">R18+ rating</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/f-e-a-r-2-unbanned-in-australia/">F.E.A.R. 2 'unbanned' in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 20:00:00 EST. Australian gamers were struck with relief last month when they learned that <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em> was effectively <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/11/27/f-e-a-r-2-banned-in-australia-because-of-natch-violent-conten/">banned</a> Down Under, thus protecting them from evil, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/12/f-e-a-r-2-trailer-proves-children-are-creepy/">creepy children</a>. Bad news then, Australian gamers, because it looks like you'll have something to fear after all. IGN reports that Warner Interactive's appeal to the Australian Classification Board <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/938/938700p1.html?RSSwhen2008-12-15_212600&amp;RSSid=938700">was successful</a>, thus landing the game an MA15+ rating. Even worse, the game remains completely unchanged, meaning every terrifying moment, every grisly bit of gore is intact. The game is even scheduled to hit its original February 2009 release date.<br />
<br />
Sorry, Aussie gamers, the ACB did its best to protect you from Alma, but you will have to suffer her wrath like the rest of us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/f-e-a-r-2-australia-ban-lifted-set-for-2009/">F.E.A.R. 2 Australia ban lifted, set for 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 11:00:00 EST. Alma just won't be contained in a box. Warner Bros. sent word that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/name-change-f-e-a-r-2-project-origin/">recently renamed</a> <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em> will be released over both Valve's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> and IGN's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Direct2Drive">Direct2Drive</a> digital distribution services on February 10, 2009. <br />
<br />
If that date sounds familiar, it's the same day the survival horror FPS will scare up PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 retail shelves as well. Just think, now you won't even have to leave your house to get creeped out by Monolith's spooky little girl. <br />

Kids are scary. Think about it. We tell them stories about cooking witches in ovens, tell them that cribs belong in trees and that the babies therein inevitably come tumbling down. Is it any wonder that they wind up so damned creepy? Just think of all the horror movies that use <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmn6FRgYwBQ&amp;feature=related">children</a>*. The latest <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/39890.html">trailer</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-origin"><em>F.E.A.R. 2</em></a> -- which highlights that the game is now actually <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/project-origin-gets-its-f-e-a-r-back-and-a-release/">called</a> F.E.A.R. 2</em> -- showcases lots of nasty monsters and sweet weapons, but we were particularly struck by Alma, the super creepy girl antagonist. More specifically, we were struck by her whispering "You can't hide from me" at the end of the trailer.<br />
<br />
Now, if you'll excuse us, it's time to hide.<br />

Did you know that <em>Project Origin</em> was a sequel to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fear"><em>F.E.A.R</em></a>? We're guessing there's a chunk of you who probably didn't, but from now on there's no excuse. Monolith Productions and WB Games inc. have purchased the <em>F.E.A.R</em> name off Activision Blizzard, who retained the license after Monolith switched publishers to work on the sequel. Seemingly Actiblizz feel that they don't need it anymore, along with a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/actiblizz-drops-ghostbusters-brutal-legend-in-favor-of-spyro-c/">few other Sierra franchises</a>.<br />
<br />
So why not just call it <em>F.E.A.R 2</em> and have done with it? After all the effort they went to with their Name Your Fear contest, it would be a shame not to use the winning name, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-origin"><em>Project Origin</em></a>, in some form or another. As a result the game will now be known as <em>F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin</em>. Lovely. Currently it's set for release worldwide in mid-February. That's around the same time <em>Killzone 2</em> is due to hit, in case you're wondering.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/project-origin-bringing-the-f-e-a-r-back/">Project Origin bringing the F.E.A.R back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. So, with the new name purchase, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-origin"><em>Project Origin</em></a> will no longer be the spiritual successor to <em>F.E.A.R. </em>but will instead be the official sequel, now titled <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em>.<br />
<br />
Even with the newly acquired<em> F.E.A.R.</em> name, Monolith will be keeping "Project Origin" in the name not only because of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/not-f-e-a-r-2-officially-named-project-origin/">branding</a> they've already being doing, but because they <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/f-e-a-r-sequel-title-finalists-need-your-vote/">promised the fans</a>. Along with the name change, Lith has confirmed that <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em> will release to retail on February 10th, 2009.<br />

Monolith and Warner Bros. sure appreciate all the hard work you put in to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/vote-on-f-e-a-r-sequel-finalists-no-acronyms-this-time/">deciding</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/f-e-a-r-2-officially-dubbed-project-origin/">the name</a> of the "spiritual successor" to <em>F.E.A.R.</em>, but let's face it, <em>Project Origin</em> doesn't quite ring like ... <em>F.E.A.R. 2</em>. But, as the backstory goes, Sierra owned the franchise name and, up until the Activision-Blizzard <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/behold-activision-blizzard-is-born/">merger</a>, the company was supposedly working on its own <em>F.E.A.R.</em> sequel.<br />
<br />
But then, well, Sierra hit <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/blizzavision-keeps-crash-spyro-ice-age-prototype-loses-bruta/">a snag</a>. Sensing that all was not well, Warner Bros. sent over a gift basket full of money, and back came the rights to the franchise name. So, here Warner Bros. and Monolith are with the original name and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-origin">the name</a> that's been used in all the marketing to date. Solution? Combine the two. And the final answer is ... <em>F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin</em>! In stores February 10th, 2009.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/name-change-f-e-a-r-2-project-origin/">Name change: 'F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 16:50:00 EST. The <a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/902/902024p1.html">delay news</a> comes from Lith's art lead Dave Matthews who confirmed during Leipzig that they'll release <em>Project Origin</em> on multiple platforms in early '09.
