It must be extremely difficult to truly scare a person who wants to be scared. Sure, at a mechanical level, fear is an involuntary reaction to the perception of threat -- but it's hard to upgrade fear to deep, inexorable terror without the element of surprise. FEAR 3's capacity for terror has been telegraphed by two predecessors, executive credits for acclaimed horror-makers John Carpenter and Steve Niles ... and also, the game has "fear" in the title. With a combination like that, fear shouldn't just be feared -- it should be expected.

The most surprising thing about FEAR 3, however, is that those scares never come. For better and for worse, the franchise's latest outing has eschewed the horror classification in favor of a more action-packed, score-centric experience.

Gallery: FEAR 3 (multiplayer)

Continue reading FEAR 3 review: Scores, not scares

FEAR 3 review: Scores, not scares originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 13:45:00 EST. So it looks like the team at Warner Bros is sticking with the live-action ads for F.E.A.R. 3. Apparently it's just a thing it's doing, so you'd best get used to it. Anyway, the latest trailer for F.E.A.R.3 is all about telekinetic bad boy, Paxton Fettel. The actual gameplay segments of the trailer show off some of Fettel's abilities, including telepathic control of enemy soldiers. He can also lift soldiers in the air, making them easy targets for F.E.A.R.'s perennial protagonist, Point Man.

He also glows a really pretty orange. After all, there's no reason to murder hapless goons without a little flair, is there?
Video: FEAR 3's Paxton Fettel kills things with his mind originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 May 2010 20:00:00 EST. Interactive Entertainment,

Look, we get what you're trying to do here with this F.E.A.R. 3 trailer, but you aren't getting the desired result. The live-action portions don't make the world more believable -- in fact, they do the complete opposite. It just comes off as hokey and low-budget. Did you really watch this before sending it out? Bush league, guys.

The gameplay portions of the trailer, however, are more our speed. There's slow-mo gunplay, creepy monsters and plenty of that wonderful ragdoll physics we've grown to love. That's the winning formula! Please keep that in mind for next time.

Sincerely,
Case in point: Freaky, telepathic demon women and their <strike>obsessed</strike> possessed partners.

Of all the shouldn't-have-kids candidates, you'd think demon women would be at the top of the list. Alas, having already given birth to F.E.A.R. characters Point Man and Paxton Fettel, Alma is pregnant again and set to have her third child in F.E.A.R. 3. Hot on the heels of rumors of a new title in the first-person franchise, Warner Bros. has made F.E.A.R. 3 official. The shooter is scheduled to release this fall on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Freaky devil child Alma is back once again, along with "Point Man," the protagonist from the original F.E.A.R., and even the villainous Paxton Fettel. While the single-player campaign tasks players with controlling Point Man once again, a new "divergent co-op" mode allows a second player to take control of Fettel. The press release also notes that F.E.A.R. 3 will feature "an evolved cover system."

F.E.A.R. 3 is being developed by Day 1 Studios, the developer behind the console ports of the original F.E.A.R. as well as the more recent Fracture. Warner Bros. has also enlisted the help of horror director John Carpenter and writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night). Niles co-wrote the script for the game, while Carpenter "provided his expertise in crafting the in-game cinematics."

And yes, it's been confirmed that the game's logo is, in fact, F.3.A.R., officially opening the door for its inevitable sequel: F.E.4.R.
F.E.A.R. 3 announced, John Carpenter crafting cinematics originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 11:51:00 EST. Alright, folks, story time -- about five days ago, a tipster sent us the three box shots in the gallery below, claiming they were asked to take part in a survey that essentially revealed the existence of a third game in the Monolith-developed F.E.A.R. series. Further, the game's title on the boxes didn't read "F.E.A.R. 3," but rather "F.3.A.R." Fast-forward four days later and one of the box shots turns up on gaming forum neoGAF as an image (sans box) alleged to be from an unnamed Spanish magazine, with the words "próximo número" ("next number" literally, or, in this case, "next issue") cascading down the left side.

Normally we wouldn't tell you about any of this, except for the fact that when we contacted publisher Warner Bros. Interactive for comment, we were told by a representative, "We have no info to share at this time." While that's certainly not solid confirmation, the fact that WB didn't outright falsify the images strikes us as notable to say the least. We'll let you know if the publisher decides to be any more candid, but for now we're leaving this one firmly in the rumor bin.
Resident Evil 5
I've long been a fan of the Resident Evil series, and while the campaign here has problems and should never be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. If you've been too frightened by the prospect of Alma's return (or too frightened by the prospect of dropping $50+ on her new game), know that this weekend's Steam deal is none other than F.E.A.R. 2 and the recently released Reborn DLC. If you fall into the former grouping, we suggest you draw the shades, turn off your computer for the weekend and even take the phone off the hook just to be safe.

However, if you're in the latter group, now's the time to pounce as Valve has slashed 50% off of the price of each, offering them at a reduced $24.99 and $4.99, respectively. You can't be in both groups though - if you spend the weekend hiding, you'll miss the deal which is available for "this weekend only."
Steam Weekend Deal: F.E.A.R. 2 and Reborn DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 01:15:00 EST. We know what you're thinking. "Hey, aren't there already Fight Night Round 4 and FEAR 2 demos?" The answer to that question is ... yes. However, these are new Fight Night Round 4 and FEAR 2 demos. The new Fight Night demo adds the ability to punch using the face buttons instead of the right stick, so it might be worth a look for those who were turned off before. It also features a "body spamming fix." We're not sure what that is, but it sounds gross.

The FEAR 2 demo is actually pretty interesting, as it's a demo for the upcoming single-player DLC pack, "Reborn." It's not very common to see demos for an add-on, but it seems like a pretty good idea. If you're hankering to see what "Reborn" has in store, download the demo and give it a try. The DLC itself was originally scheduled to release this month, so it should be available any day now.
Seven months after release, the game is experiencing a rebirth of sorts, through an upcoming single-player expansion and brand new multiplayer update. "Slow-Mo Deathmatch," a staple of the first game, is finally coming to FEAR 2 through a free update that will be available on September 3rd. Free? A price like that is certainly going to make us revisit the game.

In addition to toiling on the various FEAR 2 updates, Monolith has created this hilarious and thematically-inappropriate trailer for the update. Watch as the magic of "SCIENCE" explains the process behind this DLC.
FEAR 2 gets free Slow-Mo Deathmatch DLC on September 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 12:00:00 EST. Major Nelson of the clan Hryb sends word that free DLC is available on XBLM for three very different types of games.

Trivial Pursuit: Hundreds of new questions for movie buffs.

Tomb Raider: Underworld: Designer costume pack, created by designers and voted for by Tomb Raider fans.

F.E.A.R. 2: "Toy Soldiers" Map Pack, where players are inches tall and battle in a "pinball machine, a hospital lab room, and a playground sandbox." OK, that actually sounds cool.

Boo! Did we scare you? No? All right, what if we told you a demo for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin was available for download right now on the Xbox Live Marketplace? A single-player demo for Monolith's latest can be found on the XBLM as of early this morning in all of its 760MB glory. If you're looking for a scare today it might be worth checking out.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin takes place [Spoiler Alert! from the original game] post explosion that devastated the city from the original game and stars a brand new protagonist, Special Forces operator Michael Becket. Oh and yes, Alma's still around and she's still looking to put the hurt on those who wronged her in the past. Run!
We thought we would warn you so you can prepare the extra pair of trousers now. You'll need it, because Alma and the gang are headed back to your Xbox 360 in a new F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin demo that arrives on XBLM next Thursday, January 22. We don't know what the demo will contain, but we're guessing it will involve (virtual) shooting, (virtual) hallucinations and (very, very real) abject terror. What would you expect? It's F.E.A.R. 2. The original F.E.A.R. garnered universal critical praise when it launched, but it seems like we've heard less and less about the subsequent installments in the series. In a recent interview with CVG, Monolith's Dave Matthews, lead art designer for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, blamed the Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate expansions (which were created by TimeGate studios) for "[killing] off a few" fans. Later in the interview, he did a positively heart-melting acoustic rendition of "Crash Into Me".

Matthews' main qualm with the expansions is that TimeGate took the story in a direction that Monolith wouldn't have followed -- they took the focus away from the series' young, unsettling antagonist, Alma. With Monolith behind the PC version and console ports of Project Origin, Matthews is confident that the story will continue "the way we originally intended." This is great news for fans, and terribly unfortunate news for the faint of heart.
Monolith's Dave Matthews, lead art designer for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, says multiple expansions and console ports have likely cost the shooter franchise some fans. In an interview with CVG a comment was made to Matthews that the TimeGate developed expansions and Day 1 Studios developed console-ports of the critically acclaimed shooter could be responsible for bringing new eyes to the horror-fueled FPS. "And killed off a few," Matthews noted.

Matthews primary reason for the comment based on story decisions taken once the series was out of Monolith's hands. "[TimeGate] took the story in a direction that we didn't intend ... We look at Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate as an alternate universe," Matthews told CVG. "F.E.A.R. was about Alma, F.E.A.R. 2 is about Alma, and we wanted to continue the story the way we originally intended."

This time around Monolith, who gained Xbox 360 experience from the Condemned series, has committed to develop all three version of the upcoming sequel. "While there will be some slight variations between the different versions ... our main goal is to make sure the experience is synonymous across all three platforms."
Matthews: Ports and expansions contributed to loss of FEAR fans originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST. Australian gamers were struck with relief last month when they learned that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin was effectively banned Down Under, thus protecting them from evil, creepy children. Bad news then, Australian gamers, because it looks like you'll have something to fear after all. IGN reports that Warner Interactive's appeal to the Australian Classification Board was successful, thus landing the game an MA15+ rating. Even worse, the game remains completely unchanged, meaning every terrifying moment, every grisly bit of gore is intact. The game is even scheduled to hit its original February 2009 release date.

Sorry, Aussie gamers, the ACB did its best to protect you from Alma, but you will have to suffer her wrath like the rest of us.
F.E.A.R. 2 Australia ban lifted, set for 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 11:00:00 EST. Warner Bros. sent word that the recently renamed F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin will be released over both Valve's Steam and IGN's Direct2Drive digital distribution services on February 10, 2009.

If that date sounds familiar, it's the same day the survival horror FPS will scare up PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 retail shelves as well. Just think, now you won't even have to leave your house to get creeped out by Monolith's spooky little girl.
Kids are scary. Think about it. We tell them stories about cooking witches in ovens, tell them that cribs belong in trees and that the babies therein inevitably come tumbling down. Is it any wonder that they wind up so damned creepy? Just think of all the horror movies that use children*. The latest trailer for F.E.A.R. 2 -- which highlights that the game is now actually called F.E.A.R. 2 -- showcases lots of nasty monsters and sweet weapons, but we were particularly struck by Alma, the super creepy girl antagonist. More specifically, we were struck by her whispering "You can't hide from me" at the end of the trailer.

Now, if you'll excuse us, it's time to hide.
Did you know that Project Origin was a sequel to F.E.A.R? We're guessing there's a chunk of you who probably didn't, but from now on there's no excuse. Monolith Productions and WB Games inc. have purchased the F.E.A.R name off Activision Blizzard, who retained the license after Monolith switched publishers to work on the sequel. Seemingly Actiblizz feel that they don't need it anymore, along with a few other Sierra franchises.

So why not just call it F.E.A.R 2 and have done with it? After all the effort they went to with their Name Your Fear contest, it would be a shame not to use the winning name, Project Origin, in some form or another. As a result the game will now be known as F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin. Lovely. Currently it's set for release worldwide in mid-February. That's around the same time Killzone 2 is due to hit, in case you're wondering.
Project Origin bringing the F.E.A.R back originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. So, with the new name purchase, Project Origin will no longer be the spiritual successor to F.E.A.R. but will instead be the official sequel, now titled F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

Even with the newly acquired F.E.A.R. name, Monolith will be keeping "Project Origin" in the name not only because of the branding they've already being doing, but because they promised the fans. Along with the name change, Lith has confirmed that F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin will release to retail on February 10th, 2009.
Monolith and Warner Bros. sure appreciate all the hard work you put in to deciding the name of the "spiritual successor" to F.E.A.R., but let's face it, Project Origin doesn't quite ring like ... F.E.A.R. 2. But, as the backstory goes, Sierra owned the franchise name and, up until the Activision-Blizzard merger, the company was supposedly working on its own F.E.A.R. sequel.

But then, well, Sierra hit a snag. Sensing that all was not well, Warner Bros. sent over a gift basket full of money, and back came the rights to the franchise name. So, here Warner Bros. and Monolith are with the original name and the name that's been used in all the marketing to date. Solution? Combine the two. And the final answer is ... F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin! In stores February 10th, 2009.
Name change: 'F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 16:50:00 EST. The delay news comes from Lith's art lead Dave Matthews who confirmed during Leipzig that they'll release Project Origin on multiple platforms in early '09. Project Origin, Monolith's everything-but-the-name follow up to F.E.A.R., has slipped on all of that spilled gore, sliding back from the game's previous fall release until sometime in early 2009. The news came from Project Origin art lead, Dave Matthews, who took time during the Leipzig Games Convention to break the news -- and fans' hearts - confirming that players will have to wait until the first quarter of 2009 to find out just what Alma has been up to.

Softening the blow a bit, new details surrounding the upcoming shooter also emerged from last week's event, including news that the sequel will include more interactive and varied environments than those seen in F.E.A.R., while enemy A.I. has also been amped up as well. According to Monolith, the story itself will also be improved over the original, giving us all the more reason to think that maybe Project Origin is worth waiting for after all.
And while we're sure the main focus of the trailer is supposed to be the in-game footage, gory visuals and explosive action, we couldn't help but focus on Alma and her creepy as hell swing. Seriously. An evil supernatural being is scary enough, but when that evil entity is a little girl AND she's swinging on a swing under moonlight ... now that's messed up. Check out the new Project Origin E3 trailer after the break as we hope to get our hands on the game sometime during E3 this week and gauge whether or not swing sets play a major role in the storyline.
Continue reading Video: Again, we begin to F.E.A.R. a swinging Alma

Video: Again, we begin to F.E.A.R. a swinging Alma originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 13:30:00 EST. If Silent Hill taught us to be afraid of fog and Fatal Frame was quite clear in its mandate that ghosts are not to be screwed with, Monolith proved with a little acronym called F.E.A.R. that little girls are truly freaky. The much vaunted PC shooter married run-and-gun gameplay with survival horror in a way that, while not being terribly unique, still managed to achieve a synergy wholly uncommon in video games.

However, shortly after F.E.A.R. landed on retail shelves in 2005, Monolith parted ways with BFF publisher Vivendi, a move that left all but the game's name in the hands of the developer, forcing the studio to re-brand its IP. And in 2007, Monolith turned to the gamer community, asking for creative types to submit ideas for what the sequel should be called.

The result, as it turned out, was Project Origin. But even with a name for its new baby, the question remained, and admittedly still lingers, as to if Monolith can recapture the lightning in a bottle that was F.E.A.R. To this end, we recently cornered designers Craig Hubbard and John Mulkey to ask them both why we should care about their latest offering.
While some may look to water and its undulating physics as the standard for current gen eye candy, developer Monolith's yardstick is apparently a tad more crimson. The studio has released a new video for its F.E.A.R. follow-up, Project Origin, showing off the way blood will be handled in the upcoming sequel by comparing the previous game's visceral cherry mist to what can be best described as Project Origin's syrupy goop.

On the game's recently launched community website, Monolith FX guru Mark Wood explains some of the work that went into the project's interesting, if messy, take on in-game gore. Writes Wood, the team is working to make the blood "visible from far away, while still feeling meaty and satisfying at closer range," something he concedes was lacking in the original F.E.A.R. The end result looks a bit like blasting strawberry jelly out of a bad guy, which in all honesty should be reason enough to get you to watch the video below.
Continue reading New Project Origin video compares, gushes blood

New Project Origin video compares, gushes blood originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 May 2008 01:00:00 EST. The first, embedded above, deals with the Replica Elite Powered Armor. It is, quite simply, a mech capable of laying waste to all in its path. The video make sure to drive this point home, destroying buildings and vaporizing soldiers that stand in its way (or even in the general vicinity of its way). The second video (embedded after the break along with the other two) concerns the return of one of the enemies in the original F.E.A.R., the Assassin. The Assassin is an acrobatic, pseudo-invisible badass with a penchant for killing. Sound fun? Of course it does. The final two videos are fly-throughs that show off Project Origin's spooky environments. Lovely. Embedded after the break you can view the latest "Abomination" trailer for Monolith's F.E.A.R. sequel Project Origin and between the freaky crab person bits, we get to see actual gameplay. And if we ever mocked Project Origin's graphics before, we take back those statements because (visually) it looks dandy fine. After watching the latest "Swingset Trailer" for Monolith's upcoming Project Origin, we have absolutely no doubt that the Lith are experts at creating crazy, twisted and totally freaky experiences. Then again, have we ever doubted them? Go ahead, give the latest Project Origin trailer a looksy and try to tell us Alma doesn't send a chill up your spine or that the swingset doesn't freak you out. Yeah, we've been harsh on Project Origin because of its "dated" graphics, but when it comes to building tension and totally messed up story lines ... well, Lith gets our seal of approval.
Project Origin trailer: Alma just wants to play originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 Mar 2008 14:00:00 EST. Since delivering on expectations at last E3 and being later christened with a new, acronym-deficient title, developer Monolith has been eerily quiet regarding its upcoming horror-themed follow up to 2005's F.E.A.R. Now the company has launched a community website for the game, offering a one-stop buffet if you will for all things <strike>F.E.A.R. 2</strike> Project Origin.

The site is currently light on content, offering just a smattering of developer blog posts (lead engineer Russ P says the game is "coming together nicely") alongside some backstory and information about the game's various weapons. However, it's the included gameplay trailer that proves the most interesting addition to the website, showing an early look at the sorts of nasties Alma Wade has in store -- though most of all we just hope that Project Origin will bring the chills that the first game promised but never delivered.
Project Origin community website launched originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 21:00:00 EST.
IGN sat down and chatted with Project Origin lead designer John Mulkey to get the dirt on how development is progressing, what Monolith's goals are with Origin and what we can look forward to. And the general theme we're hearing is that Origin will take what was offered in F.E.A.R. and add more. More enemy types, more weapons, more locations and more variety. We can't be sure if more variety will equal commercial success or if Origin will still be looked at as F.E.A.R. 1.5, but we can be sure that Monolith is confident and that gives us some comfort for now. Our only gripe thus far is the game's "soft" and "flat" graphics, but maybe that's just us being nit-picky.
Lith to improve upon everything with Project Origin originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 14:45:00 EST. Having traipsed through the corridors of Valve's American headquarters, Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee is notably unimpressed with the assignment greeting him upon his return. More creepy corridors, this time found in "uninformatively" titled F.E.A.R. expansion, Perseus Mandate. While he appreciates the infrequent mind-bending sequences (they're rather scares, you see), Yahtzee can't wrap his brain around the developer's constant recycling of environments and combat. As usual, hidden within the rapid-fire rants and elaborately constructed metaphors lies an astute observation -- how is this game supposed to be scary if your character's running around with a bloody bazooka?
