After a year and a half of being on Japanese store shelves, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Final-Fantasy-Type-0/"><em>Final Fantasy Type-O</em></a> doesn't look like it's getting localized in the US. Luckily, a few fans are up to the immense task of translating the PSP RPG.<br /><br />GBA Temp forum poster SkyBladeCloud has <a href="http://gbatemp.net/threads/final-fantasy-type-0-romhacking.340183/">laid bare</a> all his programming work on the Fi<em>nal Fantasy Type-O</em> ROM on the forums, producing the above shaky-cam video of his work so far. He's not necessarily soliciting translators for assistance, but has made it much easier for fan translation to succeed by reverse-engineering a majority of the game engine. Now Japanese-fluent gamers can help make a translation a reality.<br /><br /><em>Final Fantasy Type-O</em> launched on the PSP in Japan in October of 2011, at the tail-end of the PSP's life cycle. <em>Type-O</em> uses a hybrid battle system not unlike <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/metareview-crisis-core-final-fantasy-vii-psp/"><em>Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-3rd-birthday"><em>The 3rd Birthday</em></a> - a mixture of turn-based and real-time action combat.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/12/final-fantasy-type-0-fan-translation-could-use-some-help/">Final Fantasy Type-0 fan translation could use some help</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 04:00:00 EST. A stage presentation on September 1 in Tokyo's Shibuya district titled, "<em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> Lightnight Saga: New Developments Presentation" apparently features "details on the future of the <em>FFXIII</em> project" (via <a href="http://andriasang.com/con201/ffxiii_developments/">Andriasang's translation</a>).<br /><br />Beyond <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> and <em>XIII-2</em>, the Fabula Nova Crystallis series extends to <em>Final Fantasy Versus XIII</em> and <em>Final Fantasy Agito XIII</em> (renamed <em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em>). Of the planned "trilogy" of games, the only one yet to see release is <em>Final Fantasy Versus XIII</em>. In fact, nothing has been heard of the title in quite some time - it was a no show both at last year's Tokyo Game Show and this year's E3 Expo. A demo of the next-gen technology supporting <em>Versus</em>, the Luminous Engine, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/06/this-is-what-final-fantasy-might-look-like-on-next-gen-tech/">was given at E3</a>, but <em>Versus</em> wasn't part of the presentation.<br /><br />Kotaku's <a href="http://kotaku.com/5927645/rumor-final-fantasy-versus-xiii-is-dead">reporting</a> that the game may be in flux or cancelled, though Square Enix reps refused to comment on the status of the title. With any luck, we'll find out more this September.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/20/final-fantasy-25th-anniversary-celebration-includes-ffxiii-deve/">Final Fantasy 25th anniversary celebration includes FFXIII 'developments' talk</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jul 2012 09:30:00 EST. According to <a href="http://andriasang.com/comz52/ff_type_0_international_release/">Andriasang</a>, Square's Ultimania guide for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-type-0"><em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em></a> includes an interview with director Hajima Tabata, who reportedly reveals that his team is currently working on the international version of the PSP title. This would be the first official confirmation of the game's upcoming arrival in Europe and North America -- though the interview doesn't bring up any details about the timetable for said localizations.<br />
<br />
Andriasang also reports that the interview contains Tabata's plans for the franchise's future. He reportedly wants to make a direct sequel to the game, titled (what else?) Type-1, and would like to see the next installment on a home console. We've contacted Square for a comment on ... well, everything you just read.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/30/report-final-fantasy-type-0-getting-international-release/">Report: Final Fantasy Type-0 getting international release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST. Though much of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-type-0"><em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em></a> is still shrouded in abstract mystery, one thing is known for sure: It is more than 12 minutes long. How do we know? Well, that's the length of the trailer above, which, while substantial, doesn't appear to be all-encompassing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/spare-12-minutes-for-this-final-fantasy-type-0-trailer/">Spare 12 minutes for this Final Fantasy Type-0 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 20:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-type-0">Final Fantasy Type-0</a></em> is finally coming out in Japan on October 27, and Square Enix is observing the long-awaited occasion with an absolutely gorgeous collector's edition. This limited release of the PSP game packs a book of postcards and a three-disc soundtrack set, and looks damn good doing it.<br />
<br />
Here's a bummer: this super pretty set is only going to be available on the Japanese Square Enix e-Store, for &yen;12,760. So, there's very little chance of actually encountering one of these in real life. We're addressing this situation by just gazing languidly at this picture, and the others on Andriasang. It'll also be possible to buy the soundtrack and postcards later, if you're the proactive type.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/10/final-fantasy-type-0s-japanese-collectors-edition-is-lovely/">Final Fantasy Type-0's Japanese collector's edition is lovely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Sep 2011 05:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-type-0"><em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em></a> arrives in Japan on October 13, after <em>years</em> and years of waiting -- you might have read about it in history class, under its original name of <em>Final Fantasy Agito XIII</em>. It was first announced as a mobile game in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/08/3-final-fantasy-xiii-games-2-just-for-ps3/">2006</a>, then officially moved to PSP in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/final-fantasy-agito-xiii-heading-to-psp/">2008</a>, then renamed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/final-fantasy-type-0-is-new-name-for-final-fantasy-agito-xiii/">this year</a>. Now that Square Enix is <em>absolutely certain</em> it's shaken off anyone who might have been paying attention, the publisher is going to release it. In Japan, at least -- no announcements have been made for other territories.<br />
<br />
But first, it's planned a demo. Starting August 11, Japanese PSP owners (and anyone with a Japanese PSN account, <em>hint hint</em>) can download the demo, titled "Natsubi," which will both introduce players to the content of the action-RPG and unlock special outfits for use in the final game. Even better, unlike the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/10/3-dissidia-duodecim-prologus-demo-strikes-north-american-psn/"><em>Dissidia Duodecim</em> demo</a>, this one's free. Even better than <em>that</em>, this one's not called "Prologus."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/05/final-fantasy-type-0-demo-on-japanese-psn-august-11/">Final Fantasy Type-0 demo on Japanese PSN August 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-type-0/">Final Fantasy Type-0</a> </em>(formerly known as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/final-fantasy-type-0-is-new-name-for-final-fantasy-agito-xiii/">Final Fantasy Agito XIII</a></em>) will launch in Japan on October 13. <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/07/20/ff_type_zero_date/">Andriasang</a> says the game, which comes on two UMDs, will cost <span>&yen;7,700 -- a hike from the regular &yen;5,040 for most PSP games.<br />
<br />
Square Enix also released a new trailer, but to get a better idea of <em>Type-0</em>'s fast-paced battles (one of its facets that prompted the change in name) you should check out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/22/square-enix-gives-20-minute-demonstration-of-final-fantasy-type/">20-minute demonstration</a>.</span> The game currently has no announced launch plans for North America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/final-fantasy-type-0-dated-in-japan/">Final Fantasy Type-0 dated in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 14:00:00 EST. <br />
Along with the new name, the company premiered a new trailer, featuring lots of depressing, epic CG war footage (warning: wounded Chocobo) along with actual gameplay. The rest looks pretty much like it did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/multiplayer-battles-discovered-in-new-final-fantasy-agito-xiii-t/">two years ago</a>, at least in terms of the third-person action-style gameplay; the look seems to have gotten a bit darker. However, this version has something "Agito XIII" never did: a release window (specifically, summer).<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Square Enix has blocked the trailer from YouTube.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/final-fantasy-type-0s-new-trailer-for-a-new-name/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Final Fantasy Type-0's new trailer for a new name [update: trailer removed]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/18/final-fantasy-type-0s-new-trailer-for-a-new-name/">Final Fantasy Type-0's new trailer for a new name [update: trailer removed]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 10:45:00 EST. What was to be the PlayStation Portable entry in Square Enix's "Fabula Nova Crystallis" series is now considered a spin-off title with a new name: <em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em>. Director Hajime Tabata resolved the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/17/final-fantasy-types-1-3-also-trademarked-mystery-grows/">mysterious trademark filings</a> at Square Enix's 1st Production Department event in Japan today, noting that the change from "<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/10/final-fantasy-versus-xiii-and-agito-xiii-tgs-trailers-finally/">Final Fantasy Agito XIII</a></em>" seemed appropriate given how different the more action-oriented design of <em>Type-0</em> had become from <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em>.<br />
<br />
Though it will now distance itself from <em>XIII</em>, <em>Type-0</em> will continue to embrace the PSP -- in fact, when it ships in Japan this Summer, it'll come on two UMDs. According to <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2011/01/18/final-fantasy-agito-xiii-is-now-final-fantasy-type-0/">Siliconera</a>'s translation, the doubled storage will accommodate over 30 voiced characters. Judging by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/multiplayer-battles-discovered-in-new-final-fantasy-agito-xiii-t/">earlier trailers</a>, <em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em> will also feature multiplayer battles. <br />
<br />
We'll contact Square Enix to learn more about its plans for North America.<br />

With Square Enix's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/square-enix-trademarks-final-fantasy-type-0-in-europe/"><em>Final Fantasy Type-0</em></a> still an enigma, little can be discerned from the company's recent trademarks of <em>Final Fantasy Type-1</em>, <em>Type-2</em> and <em>Type-3</em>. Whereas <em>Type-0</em> was met with domain name registrations, these subsequent names have not, causing <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2011/01/16/final-fantasy-type-1-type-2-and-type-3/">Siliconera</a> to postulate that these could be "protective trademarks," to be used in case <em>Type</em> can be capitalized into a franchise.<br />
<br />
But why stop at Type-3? Why not register 4, 5, and beyond? If Square Enix doesn't act quickly enough, who knows what the company will lose to squatters? Heck, we already put in a registration for <em>Final Fantasy Agito Tredecim: Type-13-2: Final Mix</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/17/final-fantasy-types-1-3-also-trademarked-mystery-grows/">Final Fantasy Types 1-3 also trademarked, mystery grows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 02:00:00 EST. Or at least another <em>Final Fantasy</em> something. Square Enix filed a <a href="http://oami.europa.eu/CTMOnline/">European trademark</a> (number 009631144) for "Final Fantasy Type-0," covering everything from "Computer game software" to "toy swords." <br />
<br />
A video game seems like a safe guess, being the primary format for <em>Final Fantasy</em> media, but Square Enix <em>did</em> just start an <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/na/manga/">online manga shop</a>. <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2010/12/29/square-enix-preparing-final-fantasy-type-0/">Siliconera</a> also found a filing for the above logo, featuring "Type zero" in Japanese kanji. Yes, it's Type "zero" and not "o," dashing that joke we wanted to make about a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_O_Negative">Type O Negative</a> role playing game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/square-enix-trademarks-final-fantasy-type-0-in-europe/">Square Enix trademarks 'Final Fantasy Type-0' in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 10:01:00 EST.
