The digital distribution service stated 431 games (out of 486 available on the service) have been "fixed, tested, and reported" to work on Windows 8.

"Note that most of these have not had the master builds updated, so you shouldn't need to redownload the installer or anything," GOG's announcement noted. "Some of the titles, our build ninjas performed their usual magic on, and they'll work now in Windows 8 - and we're even adding Windows 7 support to a few. We'll also be adding more Windows 8 games as time goes by and we've got time to apply some fixes to more of the classic games in the catalog."

We reached out to GOG for an official list of the 431 compatible games, but they told us it's easier to list the games that aren't Windows 8 compatible. We've dropped that list after the break.

Good Old Games is expanding to include not only Mac games, but PC games for Mac. Right now GOG has 50 games available for Mac, 28 of which are only on GOG. Games include: Syndicate, the Ultima and Wing Commander franchises, The Witcher 2 (all out for the first time on Mac today), Machinarium, FTL, Syndicate, Sim City 2000, Dungeon Keeper, Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers and Crusader: No Remorse. The Witcher 2 is dropping for Mac on GOG today as well, Eurogamer reports -- which suggests that from today, GOG will support Mac games.

CD Projekt Red and GOG have a conference today at 2 p.m. ET, set to stream live from the Witcher Facebook page and on GOG. This may have been one of the surprise announcements scheduled for the event, but there should be plenty more. CD Projekt Red plans to announce the official name of its Cyberpunk game and show off the REDkit mod tools program.

Retro City Rampage, slated to arrive later this year, hearkens back to the 8-bit days of yore to deliver a parody of modern day open-world games, and it has generally been a topic of gleeful discussion among Joystiq staff.

In addition to Retro City Rampage, GOG.com has also acquired the first three games of the Tomb Raider series and Sid Meier's Colonization. Notably, the Tomb Raider collection has actually been "remastered for Windows." The Tomb Raider collection is $10, while Colonization is available for $6. On June 19, indie game Tiny and Big will also come to GOG, for $10 ($9 for pre-orders). Finally, GOG.com is hosting a special pre-order program for the upcoming indie adventure title, Resonance. Those who pre-order will receive a 10 percent discount and access to a 4 hour playable preview of the game prior to its June 19 launch.

"Heavy discounts are bad for gamers," Rambourg told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. "If a gamer buys a game he or she doesn't want just because it's on sale, they're being trained to make bad purchases, and they're also learning that games aren't valuable." The all-too-common phenomenon of spending more money than you want to just to get everything that's on sale in a particular week is "not good for anyone," he said.

If, like us, you wonder at this point how this attitude squares with GOG's own weekend sales, Rambourg explained: "Our average sale tends to be around 40% - 50% off; that's plenty of incentive to pick up a game if you're interested or if you just think you might like to try it because you're not sure about the game, but not some crazy 75% or 85% discount that damages the long-term value of a game." Of course, if you want to get extremely technical about it, the majority of GOG's business is selling $6 versions of games that cost upward of $50 when they originally came out (twenty years ago).

Or, as we like to call it, this is GOG's "buy 16 games, get 16 games free" sale.

The sale includes Fallout 2, Earthworm Jim 1 and 2, MDK, Freespace and Invictus: In the Shadow of Olympus, for $3 each. Every title is $3, actually, making the entire bundle $96 -- a savings of $96. Yes, that's what we meant with "buy 16, get 16 free." This could also be the "buy one, get two half off" sale, or the "buy 8, get 16 half off" sale. Take your pick; any way they're all good old games for a great new price.

The sale runs from now until Monday at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

Available for XP, Vista and Windows 7, the free version includes the game itself, Fallout-themed wallpapers, a 205 page "Fallout bible" and the soundtrack.

Originally released in 1997, Fallout will feel familiar and yet dramatically different to anyone whose history with the series begins with Fallout 3. For a total investment of zero dollars, however, it's hard to do much better.

This weekend, GOG has a mad rush of Zork titles and other "Activision Treasures" on sale, including Zork: Grand Inquisitor, Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands, Return to Zork and The Zork Anthology, which has Zork 1-3, Beyond Zork, Zork Zero and Planetfall.

All Zorky titles are half off, for $3 each this weekend, along with Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Caesar 3 and Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption, the last of which we hear was recently rebooted as an open-world western. Or, wait. That may have been something else entirely.

The new, new GOG offers more community features to suggest new games, a new, faster downloader, and, most importantly, more games.

GOG is fulfilling its promise of newer games with a growing selection of recent indies including Trine and The Whispered World. It's even selling a game that's so not old, it's not even out yet. Pre-orders for the first-person dungeon RPG Legend of Grimrock are open now for $11.99, in advance of its April 11 release.
