A "strong source" told GamesIndustry International the figure, saying the majority of those layoffs are being made at the company's global headquarters in Southam, England.

A Codemasters spokesperson told us there is no confirmed number of affected employees, referring to numbers reported elsewhere as "speculative." Codemasters' official statement says the restructuring is "not companywide," and that the process isn't expected to affect development of "core console and PC titles" like Grid 2 and this year's Formula One game.

Codemasters' official statement reads:

"As the Company realigns its operations to focus on areas of increased strategic importance and decrease resources in areas that are not delivering value for the business, the Company has proposed the restructure of certain aspects within its digital development and publishing units in line with future product strategy. As a result of the proposed restructure, the Company has therefore entered into a period of collective consultation with the affected employees. The restructure is not companywide and is not anticipated to impact the development of its core console and PC titles such as Grid 2 or its annual Formula One title."

Codemasters restructuring, reports suggest 80 layoffs originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 07:40:00 EST. As Engadget reports, Grid is catching the attention of cloud gaming companies, with Agawi, Cyber Cloud, G-cluster, Playcast, and Ubitus already signed up to use the technology.

According to Nvidia, a single Grid server can enable up to 24 HD quality game streams. At CES Nvidia showcased the Grid gaming system, which incorporates 20 Grid servers into a single rack. Nvidia says the rack is capable of producing 36 times the amount of HD-quality game streams as 'first-generation cloud gaming systems.'

As our friends at Engadget note, that gaming rack of 20 Grid servers pumps out around 200 teraflops worth of operations, which equates to what around 700 Xbox 360s can do. That's a whole lot of Master Chiefs running themselves to death on hamster wheels.
Nvidia Grid server pumps power into cloud gaming, six partners already lined up originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 14:00:00 EST. But he's never actually helped write an achievement list, and so Codemasters is finally giving him that chance with Grid 2. Webb and the rest of his writers will not only create the achievements for the upcoming racing game, but will have a series of posts, videos, and other content showing off what actually goes into the process of giving away all of those gamerpoints.

"Codemasters have put their faith in us to work with them on creating the ultimate list," says Webb in the press release, "and we're looking forward to repaying that trust to design Achievements and Trophies with unique objectives that will put a smile on players' faces with each and every unlock." We're interested to see just what Webb and the developers create. Even if things don't work out, odds are they won't make the worst achievement list ever, right?
Codemasters hires achievement bloggers to design achievements for Grid 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 02:00:00 EST. Fans of Codemasters' 2008 racing title GRID received some bad news this weekend: The multiplayer servers for the PC and PS3 versions of the game have been taken offline. A post on the publisher's forums explains, "This follows the decision by a third party provider to decline the offer of an extended contract to continue online play on these platforms." The provider apparently decided the 360 SKU's servers were worth saving -- Xbox Live players still have access to the game's full range on online features.

We wish Codemasters would really think these kinds of actions through before executing them. You guys know what the repercussions for this outage will be, right? Jilted PS3 and PC players are going to get into real-life illegal street racing. Do you really want to be responsible for people falling into that lifestyle, Codemasters? Do you?
Codemasters takes down GRID PS3 and PC servers originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Jun 2011 16:30:00 EST. Codemasters employees worried about having to pack up their stuff and head for Bangalore should probably relax, as VP of studios Gavin Cheshire denied such plans in a Develop interview. After a recent 50 percent acquisition by Indian company Reliance Big Entertainment, worry apparently spread about the possibility of Codemasters relocating development to its new parent company's home country. "I can safely say that this is absolutely not the case," Cheshire said. "There are obviously some 'strategic' moves for both partners, but in terms of development at the level we're at, it's very much about Reliance investing in our skills and abilities over here in the UK."

Let's hope Reliance is investing lots, as Cheshire spells out a whole mess of titles currently in development at the UK-based publisher's trio of development studios. "Our Guildford studio is working hard on Bodycount, and we will be looking to take that franchise further and further with the addition of more IP. In Southam it's full steam ahead with the next iteration in our Flashpoint series, as well as the next Dirt and Grid."

Thankfully, with all those games in development, the publisher has a plan -- and an upcoming game engine, EGO 2.0 -- for helping to manage it all. "We are focused on EGO 2.0 at the moment, which will be coming in with a massive title that we can't talk about just yet. That will really keep us cutting-edge." Cutting-edge, you say? Figure skating sim confirmed?! We think so!
Codemasters dishes on acquisition, expansion and forthcoming games originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 15:20:00 EST. 2007's street-based cousin to DiRT is coming back around for another lap, with Codemasters revealing GRiD: Reloaded for PS3 -- a Platinum range bundle set for the PAL-region starting line on March 11. Download codes for both the Prestige and 8-Ball DLC packs will be included in the package, which will retail for £24.99 ($34). An Xbox 360 version is scheduled to arrive later this year.

The 8-Ball DLC pack is currently available on Xbox Live and PSN, and adds two new multiplayer events and eight new cars into the mix. The Prestige pack is new and will be available added to PSN on March 11 for £7.99 ($10.80) -- it adds the Australian Bathurst circuit and ten additional cars. There's no word of when it'll be on Xbox Live.

Codies also revealed that two different game compilation packs are in the works: an Xbox 360 bundle for £29.99 featuring the first DiRT and GRiD (sans DLC packs); and an even cheaper and more content-rich bundle for PC that features DiRT, GRiD and Fuel at £19.99. Both will release to Europe alongside Reloaded on March 11.
GRID: Reloaded hits PAL PS3 on March 11, includes two DLC packs originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Mar 2010 10:45:00 EST. Another Tuesday, another entry in the ever expanding Xbox Games on Demand library. This week, it's Race Driver: GRiD, the well-reviewed 2008 racer from Codemasters. The game is available everywhere except Japan, which gets Raiden Fighters Aces, a fact that fills us with jealous rage. Still, if you're a fan of the Codies school of racing, you might consider picking it up (be sure to try the demo first).

As usual, prices vary by region.
Gavin Raeburn, the guy who may be most responsible for beloved Codies-brand racers like DiRT 2 and GRID, has resigned from the company, VG247 reports. After a stint lasting more than 20 years, the former executive producer has "moved on to pastures new," said Gavin Cheshire, VP of Codemasters Development.

Cheshire added, "it's positive for any individual to move when they feel they're at the top." "[Raeburn] leaves having built an incredibly talented team that's led by key players who will drive our racing portfolio forward." There's no word on where Raeburn is headed, but there's a good chance it's Disney World.
Codemasters' go-to driving dev departs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 13:32:00 EST. If you love driving, but have been unable to do so since the man stripped you of your license following your vehicular collision with that nursing home (it came out of nowhere!), you may be able to satiate that desire by picking up GRID on Steam this weekend for the discounted price of $14.99. We're no mathematicians, but we're fairly certain that's about a 50 percent decrease from the usual price of $29.99.

If you've got an appropriately beefy computer, we suggest picking it up. It's really fun, terribly addictive and -- best of all -- doesn't feature any pesky ambulatory architecture.
Steam weekend sale offers half-price GRID originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Jul 2009 14:45:00 EST. GameTap drives in its first update of the new year with the addition of GRID. Now that the rush of video game releases has receded, you can finally focus on putting your money where it really belongs: On smaller pieces of video games. New downloadable content is now available on the 360 for Force Unleashed, GRID and Vigilante 8: Arcade.

We're far too broke to even think about picking some of these up, but what about you, team? By the way, we'd expect to see at least some of this on PSN today. We'll let you know.

[Via X3F]
Codemasters has dropped word that new racing machines will be pulling up to GRID's starting line later this year. The game will be getting a new DLC pack, dubbed "8-Ball," this Fall, which will add two new multiplayer events and eight new cars, including the McLaren F1 GTR, Honda S2000 and 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM. Additionally, while 8-Ball's new cars and events will be released for both the Xbox 360 and PS3, the former will gain the added benefit of four new Achievements and 100 new Gamerpoints to earn. PS3 owners will have to fill their time dusting off vacant Trophy cases.

Another release, adding a V8 Supercars category and the Australian Bathurst circuit, is expected in the coming months. At this time, the Codies are tight-lipped regarding both price and an exact release date for any DLC, saying only that the first batch will drop this Fall for consoles, while PC players can expect information relevant to them to arrive "shortly."
GRID getting new cars, events later this year originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 17:15:00 EST.
Another Monday means more videos on the Nintendo Channel, and is there anything worth watching? Well, not really. We did appreciate the Hell's Kitchen Info Video, though, if only so that we could mock it. Who knows how the game will actually play, as a Cooking Mama with actual recipes might be kind of fun. (Even if this video doesn't make it look fun.) But what's the point of using the Hell's Kitchen license if Chef Ramsey isn't going to be his total cad self?

They definitely toned down Ramsey's personality for the game, or at least it appears that way from this trailer. Spouting lines like, "Not good so far," and, "I need you to really -- seriously -- up your game," are laughable coming from the chef's mouth. "Don't even touch another thing in this kitchen" is the worst it gets, apparently. Wow, color us scared.

To see the entire list of videos on the Nintendo Channel this week, just click past the break.

Codemasters is, sadly, the latest developer to be added to the list of those who won't be adding trophy support to their already released titles. On the official GRID forums an administrator has posted saying that they're "currently not planning to restrospectively support PSN trophies - it;s not a trivial thing to add to a game" [sic]. Though this is disappointing, it's not too unexpected. Third party games are the least likely to be patched in. With Criterion showing their contemporaries, hopefully more will decide to rake in the goodwill of gamers by following suit.
While we're not exactly sure just how many people out there are still interested in such a thing, Codemasters, the GRiD developers, are holding a contest for its players to design a livery (skin) for the above pictured car. The rules are real simple and you don't need to be an art whiz or anything. Basically, download the picture package from here, and do your best to create an official "Codemasters Racing Team" livery incorporating the Codemasters logo into the design.

Going a step further, Codemasters artists will then turn that into game art for the car. And not only does the winner get his (or her) car in the game, but they also get " a load of GRID swag" and "a framed high-resolution render of your car as it will appear in the game." The contest ends July 25th, get designing!
Design a GRiD livery for the game's upcoming DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST. The patch or as we like to call it, a "title update", will fix an entire laundry list of bugs, including numerous network updates, a few gameplay tweaks, achievement fixes and our personal favorite, a "fix for occasional excessive smoke coming from other players in network mode". Because, as you're well aware, that excessive smoke really took away from the racing experience. View the complete list of Xbox 360 GRID <strike>patch</strike> title update fixes after the break.
Continue reading Race Driver: GRID patches tire, races on

Race Driver: GRID patches tire, races on originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 11:45:00 EST. It seems that the game suffers from pausing and freezing during races and replays. Pauses are reported to be up to one second in length, which would be unacceptable in most games, but is especially so in a racing game. The issue is currently setting the Codemasters forums on fire. Solutions being offered include removing and reattaching the hard drive, playing with a memory unit and no hard drive, and clearing the cache, although it appears that no solution is effective in all cases.
Codemasters is working on a solution that will be included in a forthcoming patch, which is should be available "within the next few weeks or sooner."
360 GRID plagued by freezing issues originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST.
It's finally here kids. Yes, it's the granddaddy of all ninja simulators, Ninja Gaiden. This particular entry in the series is somewhat anachronistically titled Ninja Gaiden II. We can tell you unreservedly (and from experience) that it is glorious in execution. It's also goriest in executions. Eviscerations abound as gamers take on the role of Ryu Hayabusa, the superest of all super ninjas. But wait, what's that? There are more games shipping this week and they don't all suck? Whoa. Imagine our surprise. Behold this week's list:

Ninja Gaiden II

GRID

LEGO Indiana Jones

What makes an impressive title stand out? Is it the physics, the courses, the car selection, the destruction? Who knows for sure, but we can safely say that GRID is easily an impressive game to check out as this video demonstrates. A lot of you have already tried the demo, but this shows off how well the game is progressing. With the latest in Codemasters' Race Driver series, GRID, expected to roll up to the starting line next week, the company has announced that the demo for the upcoming, not to mention decidedly un-boring racer has been downloaded over a million times over Xbox Live, PSN, and the PC.

The demo, which was released a couple weeks back, offers a look at what players can expect when Race Driver: Grid races to European retail shelves on May 30. Following this, North American players will be able to slip behind the wheel on June 3, while a more touchable version for the Nintendo DS is expected around the same time as well.
When the demo of Codemaster's newest racer was released at the beginning of the month, it was mostly to praise and positive feedback. Now as the month ends and GRID is almost on store shelves, Atari has announced that the game's demo has now been downloaded over a million times. If other demos that "went platinum" are any kind of indication, GRID is set for success.

Codemaster's previous racer, DiRT, sold well initially, but never broke one million (at least in the US), so with a shift to an arcade style of racing and a customer base downloading the demo in large numbers, GRID could be the next online racer to see million-plus sales. Considering the recent debate surrounding the game, the community seems to be well aware of the game, so what of it readers? Will you be buying GRID come next Tuesday, or will Ninja Gaiden 2 be the major purchase of the week?
GRID demo goes platinum; game to follow? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 May 2008 02:30:00 EST. When we're not shopping for cars online or squabbling with forum goers over botched video coverage, most of our time spent with Codemasters' cryptically named racing game GRID will likely be spent online. It's something the devs obviously understand, as the company has revealed what multiplayer shenanigans we can look forward to when Race Driver: GRID ships for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on June 3.

According to Codemasters, the game will have us eating the dust of up to 11 other racers at once on some 32 different online racing events spread across 80 circuits and 15 different global locations. The devs also note that care has been taken in "maximizing" the time spent actually racing, while keeping the minutes spent in lobbies idling in neutral at a minimum. Of course, our driving skills, or rather lack thereof, have us more interested in what the Codies call "full car damage," which will be able to be turned on or off. The laundry list of features also includes the ability to download ghost cars of top drivers to race against as well as a spectator mode, you know, for those of us who learn by watching instead of doing.
We're not in the habit of taking shots at the PS3 here, regardless of our name, but this user-made YouTube video was too funny for us not to share.

Posted back on April 25, JudgeRice compiled a comparison video of the upcoming TOCA Race Driver game GRID versus PlayStation's premier racer Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Before the hate floods in, we know GRID is leaned toward a more arcade-style racing experience whereas Gran Turismo is a simulation. Still, we LAWLED.
What fiasco, you ask? If you surfed GameTrailers over the weekend, it's possible you came across a (now pulled) video comparison of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Race Driver GRID. There were multiple segments edited together, some of them labeled as PS3 footage while others were labeled as 360 footage. The problem and, hence, fiasco surfaced when sharp-eyed viewers realized that all of the footage appearing in the video was from the Playstation 3 version. Adding fuel to the fire, many denizens of the net concluded that the video painted a better picture of the "Xbox 360" footage (though no specific declarations were actually made in the video).

Many shouted conspiracy, while more levelheaded viewers assumed it was simply a mistake. To find out exactly what happened, Joystiq went directly to the source, GameTrailers. The verdict, according to GT Editor in Chief Shane Satterfield: "It was a mistake in our post-production process." Head over to Joystiq for the full interview, which includes an explanation of why GameTrailers is so teh bias.
Joystiq talks to GameTrailers about GRID fiasco originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 18:30:00 EST. You may or may not have heard about the controversy surrounding GameTrailers' GRID console comparison video which has been floating around the net for the last few days. For those of you who have no idea what we're talking about, here are the cliffs notes: GameTrailers released a comparison video showcasing the difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Strangely the video only showed PS3 footage and, as a result, people made a lot of noise about GameTrailers being biased towards the 360.

Shane Satterfield has participated in an interview with Joystiq to set things straight. He states that the video showing PS3 footage as Xbox 360 footage was "a mistake" and that "some of the footage of the PlayStation 3 version of the game was incorrectly placed in the bin for the Xbox 360 footage." Satterfield states that there is no bias and that they haven't had any advertising from Microsoft for two years. Check out the full interview for more details.
GRID comparison video simply 'a mistake' says Gametrailers EIC originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 May 2008 18:15:00 EST. Is the site horrifically biased? On Microsoft's payroll? We spoke with GameTrailers Editor In Chief, Shane Satterfield, to clear up the matter.

How did this mistake happen?

It was a mistake in our post-production process. After we captured the footage from both versions, some of the footage of the PlayStation 3 version of the game was incorrectly placed in the bin for the Xbox 360 footage. Our video editor on this particular project is not a games person and completely overlooked the fact that he had the wrong footage in the wrong place. We normally have multiple checks from games editorial on every segment that is published, but there was some confusion on who did/did not look at it before it was sent out for compression. Thus, the mistake.
The site has sparked a massive, internet-wide flame war with its PlayStation 3 vs. Xbox 360* comparison video of GRID. (The asterisk (*) denotes "Xbox 360" here has been replaced by a shiny black mass that plays Blu-rays and, until very recently, lacked the ability to rumble.)

So GameTrailers compared the PS3 GRID to the PS3 GRID ... and the PS3 version somehow lost. But by merit of being the only player, does that mean it also won? The video has been removed, and various reports indicate GT has also removed comments and disabled the email contact function. Hold your comments of teh bias because we seriously doubt a major site would intentionally spark a flame war. We've sent a request for comment and will let you know.
Because they're boring. It's a true, scientific fact straight from Codemasters who said they're going to "make racing exciting again" with its latest entry in the Race Driver series, GRID. Now, you can put that to the test with the 750 MB demo that's just been dropped onto Xbox Live. (We're not sure, but with this being a Thursday we'd bet you'll see this on PSN later today as well.)

Graphically, Codemasters certainly seems to be on the way to its lofty goal. But the rubber doesn't truly meet the road, as it were, until you get your hands on the controller. As usual, we'd love for you to give the demo a spin and share your thoughts, that is if you can control your shaking hands long enough to type them out. You know.
The 795MB GRID demo allows gamers to race around in and experience three different regions including Europe Touring Cars at Jarama Circuit, U.S Muscle cars at San Francisco and Japanese Drift Racing at Yokohama Docks. We're also told that GRID demo players in Europe will have a chance to win a BMW 3-Series, if they can log the fastest lap time in the Jarama Euro Touring cars championship. So, no more complaining that European Live gamers don't get any exclusive offers. Mmkay? Download the GRID demo, see if it's your cup of racing tea and try and win team X3F a new BMW. Dibs on riding shotgun.
GRID demo speeds onto the XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 May 2008 09:45:00 EST. Codemasters, their in-game advertising peeps at Engage In-Game Advertising and eBay Motors are all happy-go-lucky today with the announcement that upcoming racer GRID will incorporate eBay Motors' auction service into the game. In-game advertising FTW!

According to Codemasters, the eBay integration "allows GRID players to buy and sell performance vehicles in a realistic setting" as the "marketplace experience becomes an essential element in a player's strategy to win races by upgrading cars for optimal performance". There will even be an in-game eBay Motor Muscle Series. And, per the new GRID video embedded above, it looks like there will be a special eBay Motors car as well. Hell, GRID is eBay'tastic! It makes us wonder if eBay will be waiving all selling fees on copies of GRID that are sold through their online auction service. That'd be a great promotional tie-in.
GRID and eBay Motors partner in advertising deal originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 17:30:00 EST. Worlds are colliding, as Codemasters has announced what it calls a "strategic partnership" with automotive 3D effects firm Realtime Technology to share vehicle rendering and modeling practices for upcoming projects.

The partnership includes collaboration over rendering tools such as RTT DeltaGen and RealTrace, used in rendering CAD models in real time, and Codemasters' EGO game engine, seen in titles such as last year's DiRT and the upcoming Race Driver: GRID. What exactly this meeting of the minds will mean for gamers remains fuzzy, though considering Realtime Technology's considerable footprint in the automotive industry with clients such as Audi, Maserati and Rolls-Royce among many others, maybe this is all part of Codemasters' grand scheme to make racing games exciting once more.
Codies share design knowhow with automotive tech firm originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 09:10:00 EST.
