Proving that old sprites never die (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sfiv">they just go 3D</a>), upstart publisher Aksys has confirmed that it will release Arc System Works' "tactical action game" <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/guilty-gear-ii-overture-revealed-for-xbox-360-not-a-fighting-g/"><em>Guilty Gear 2: Overture</em></a> in North America this fall for the Xbox 360. The game, which takes characters from the <em>Guilty Gear</em> 2D fighting game series and injects them into a kind of bizarre amalgamation of 3D action and strategy, cannot help but remind us of last year's <em>Soul Calibur Legends</em>...and we're less than enthused to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/joystiq-impressions-soul-calibur-legends-wii/">put ourselves through that experience</a> again without some measure of alcohol.<br /><br />The game is the latest attempt at reinventing the storied franchise, following 2004's <em>Guilty Gear Isuka</em>, which upped the ante by allowing up to 4 players slug it out in a chaotic battle royal. <em>Overture </em>instead turns its attention to the series' complicated, <em>often </em>convoluted post-apocalyptic storyline, with spiky-headed Sol Badguy and his rectangular sword leading the charge in large scale battles while "balancing resources and deploying troops." Frankly trying to wrap our heads around how this will all work has given us a headache, so we're just going to file this one away in our '<em>might be interesting</em>' basket and go have a <span class="me">lie-down.</span><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/">Guilty Gear 2: Overture</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/#694254"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/03/gg2_007_announce_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/#694253"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/03/gg2_006_announce_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/#694252"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/03/gg2_005_announce_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/#694251"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/03/gg2_004_announce_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guilty-gear-2-overture/#694250"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/03/gg2_003_announce_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/heaven-or-hell-aksys-bringing-guity-gear-2-overture-to-xbox-360/">Heaven or Hell! This years line-up consists of <em>Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Hyper Anniversary, King of Fighters 98, Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, Arcana Heart, Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Soul Calibur III: Arcade Edition</em>.<br /><br />"Competitive gaming" may be a dirty word to some, but unlike the spoiled brats that make up the "professional" scene, the players of the fighting game community tend to keep it real with no sponsors to foot their bills or debatable endorsements to pimp out. The players that make up Team USA are the winners of this years <a href="http://evo2k.com">EVO</a> regional tournaments. Their reward? A trip to Japan to compete in SBO and a chance to bring it to them before they bring it back to us later this month at the EVO world finals. We're rooting for you, boys.<br /><br />Today's videos are the 2006 finals for some of the returning Super Battle Opera games. <div align="left"><a href="http://www.arcsystemworks.jp/">Arc System Works</a> is taking a queue from Namco-Bandai with their latest title, <em>Guilty Gear II: Overture</em> and to call it a departure for the famed fighting game series would be a gross understatement. Exposed in the latest issue of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/21/famitsu-primer-for-the-uninitiated/">Famitsu</a>, <em><em>Overture</em>, like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/18/joystiq-impressions-soul-calibur-legends-wii/"><em>Soul Calibur Legends</em></a>, </em>is not a fighting game at all but an action title with adventure elements. Only serving to push this announcement further into the realm of the bizarre, it has thus far only been named to appear on the <a href="http://xbox360.joystiq.com/">Xbox 360</a>. <br /><br /><em>Guilty Gear</em>'s poster boy, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Badguy">Sol Badguy</a>, looks to be taking center stage in <em>Overture</em> and is being joined by a newcomer, Sin, who bares quite the resemblance to fellow cover child <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky_Kiske">Ky Kiske</a>. This isn't the only time that Arc System Works has experimented with the series as both <em><a href="http://www.guiltygeargame.com/">Guilty Gear Isuka</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.guiltygearjudgment.com/home.php">Judgement</a></em> have dabbled in different genres, though neither strayed too far from the source material.<br /><br />This will be Arc System Work's first attempt at a fully three-dimensional game.<br /><br />[via NeoGAF]</div>

The new version includes 2 new characters, A.B.A. and Holy Order Sol. Aksys claims that A.B.A. has "never been seen outside of Japan," a claim that is only true if nobody bought <em>Guilty Gear Isuka. <br /><br /></em>In addition, Siliconera <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/index.php/2007/06/22/aksys-officially-announces-guilty-gear-xx-accent-core/">found a post</a> on Aksys's official forums stating that they'll be fixing the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/05/gg-xx-accent-core-on-ps2-is-buggy-wii-owners-benefit/">bugs</a> that were prevalent in the Japanese PS2 release. We consider "not being broken" a significant gameplay feature.<br /><br />Finally, in a decisive victory for Internet linguists everywhere, the official press release advertises, in addition to Gamecube controller and Classic Controller play, "Waggle controls exclusive to the Wii!" It's, like, an <em>official term now.</em><br /><em><br /></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/guilty-gear-waggles-into-the-us-leaving-glitches-in-japan/">Guilty Gear waggles into the US, leaving glitches in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 11:00:00 EST. Weighing in at a staggering 13 titles, this batch has a heavy emphasis on fighting games -- especially the <em>King of Fighters </em>series which has three new games alone! Here's the full list:<br /><br /><em>Guilty Gear<br />King of Fighters '95<br />King of Fighters '96<br />King of Fighters '97<br />Little Princess: Maru Oukoku no Ningyou Hime 2<br />Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special: Dominated Mind<br />Samurai Spirits: Kenkaku Yubinan Pack<br />Septentrion<br />Spectral Force 2<br />Spectral Tower<br /></em><em>Suna no Embrace </em><br /><br />In addition to the huge list of PS1 titles above, Sony is also releasing a free demo of a <em>XI</em>, also known as <em>Devil Dice</em>. Meanwhile, we get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/30/rant-championship-sprint-motors-hits-psn-tomorrow-were-still/"><em>Championship Sprint</em></a> -- joy. For North American and European users desperate for new content, <em>Guilty Gear</em> in particular looks like a nice purchase. It was kind of hard to find back in the day in America and it should be fairly easy to play for those of us not fluent in Japanese. The <em>King of Fighter's</em> games come heavily recommended too ... if only for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mai_Shiranui">Mai Shiranui</a>. Whether or not you'd like to admit it, gamers <em>love</em> seeing the female form, and nothing gets them more excited than seeing a girl actually <em>play</em> games (shock!). ArcSystemWorks understands that, so in order to promote their upcoming PSP <em>Guilty Gear</em> game, they had Japanese model Kaori Manabe not only pose with, but <span style="font-style: italic;">play </span>with the game. The press got a glimpse of her battling through PSP's exclusive beat-em-up mode, which looks absolutely fantastic. Go to <a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060824/guilty.htm">Game Watch</a> to see more pictures of the game in action. The game hits US shores in one week: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009R1T18/prey0f?creative=0&amp;camp=0&amp;adid=0JKGN76Z0JSESN17Z1DB&amp;link_code=as1">September 5th</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.psp-vault.com/Article641.psp">PSP-Vault</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/27/japanese-model-poses-with-guilty-gear/">Japanese model poses with Guilty Gear</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 27 Aug 2006 17:15:00 EST. Perhaps it's my old-school gaming nostalgia kicking in, but there's something quite charming about a 2D game in this world of uber three-dimensional madness. Fond memories aside, the good folks at Game Daily put together a nice <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/Specials/Top-Five-Most-Gorgeous-2D-Games/?page1">little list</a> of the "Top Five Most Gorgeous Looking 2D Games." With a mix of old and new, the list's cherry-on-top is the <em>Guilty Gear</em> series -- a personal favorite of mine. If you've never played this insanity-filled fighting series, I suggest you go to your local video store and rent it right away. Other honorable mentions include the PSP titles <em>Loco Roco</em> and <em>Lumines</em>, a couple Yoshi titles, and <em>Metal Slug</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/17/2ds-glory-in-top-five-form/">2D's glory -- in top five form</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 17 Jun 2006 00:30:00 EST.
