This particular gig is a 12-month contract position, while the others make mention of a "music-based motion-gaming IP" and seem to be for more established positions.<br /><br />A narrative-driven, rhythm-based motion game? Well, okay, you're still hitting buttons in time to music, represented by icons coming down the screen. It's not <em>that</em> far gone.<br /><br />But almost everything else has been rethought. Instead of <em>Rock Band's</em> five "buttons" per instrument or <em>Frequency</em>'s three, each instrument track in Blitz is limited to two tracks, with imported tracks converted algorithmically from the original <em>Rock Band </em>version. It is, technically, a simplification, but it's still challenging enough when you're juggling four or five instruments. And when you're playing Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction."<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/">Rock Band Blitz (PS3, Xbox 360)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/#4949886"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockband481_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/#4949887"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockband482_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/#4949888"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockband483_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/#4949889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockband484_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-ps3-xbox-360/#4949890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockband485_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rock-band-blitz-is-not-a-cover-of-frequency-or-amplitude/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rock Band Blitz is not a cover of Frequency or Amplitude</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rock-band-blitz-is-not-a-cover-of-frequency-or-amplitude/">Rock Band Blitz is not a cover of Frequency or Amplitude</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 13:30:00 EST. Collectively, these prototypes were referred to as "Pre-Blitz," and epitomized by a brief video of a version that keeps the social basis of <em>Blitz</em>, but with a very different aesthetic.<br /><br />While the final game ended up featuring a sort of rainbow note highway in a musically reactive city, this version is a much sunnier, somewhat more literal "highway" style environment. Somewhere between these two, the team thought of having the music make the city spring up building by building, but that didn't make it.<br /><br />At one point it wasn't even decided where the music would come from. A DLC strategy was important to the team, but it wasn't certain that the game would be a <em>Rock Band</em> game. When it was decided that it would be, the source of music became obvious. And then the team had to convert all the songs from five lanes per instrument to two -- which, Nordhaus explained, made the game way too easy in lower difficulties. Finally, against his better judgment, the team playtested a game with only one difficulty, and it worked.<br /><br />Senior designer Brian Chan explained that the game lost the "track-locking" mechanic from <em>Amplitude</em> and other handheld Rock Bands, in favor of a system that allows players to build "levels" in individual tracks. This allowed people to play in a much more freeform manner instead of following a prescribed, single best scoring pattern.<br /><br />Even the specifics of the controls were in question, with considerations like gestural controls for each instrument. Above is an idea for keyboard controls that used left, right, and a button press to simulate keys.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/07/pre-blitz-harmonix-on-building-a-new-rock-band-from-scratch/">Pre-Blitz: Harmonix on building a new Rock Band from scratch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. Featuring gameplay similar to that of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rock-band-unplugged/">Rock Band Unplugged</a></em> (or HMX's <em>Amplitude</em> or <em>Frequency</em>), the game has you sailing down a note highway, tapping blocks and switching instrument tracks for maximum points. There are several control layouts available, allowing you to switch instruments using bumpers and hitting blocks using buttons or analog sticks.<br /><br /><em>Rock Band Blitz</em> will launch with 25 tracks, including "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People, "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield, "Always" by Blink-182 and "Bang your Head" by Quiet Riot. All 25 tracks will be available to play in <em>Rock Band 3</em>. The game will also have access to the full <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly">Rock Band Music Store</a>.<br /><br />However, you will not be able to export the disc-based <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3">Rock Band 3</a></em> tracks into <em>Rock Band Blitz, </em>since they don't reside on the hard drive. Asked whether Harmonix was working on an update to allow import of disc tracks as an option, a representative told us, "We don't have plans at this time."<br /><br /><em>Blitz</em> will be out this summer.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/">Rock Band Blitz (360/PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/#4939518"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockbandblitz1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/#4939519"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockbandblitz2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/#4939520"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockbandblitz3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/#4939521"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockbandblitz4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-blitz-360-ps3/#4939522"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/rockbandblitz5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/04/rock-band-blitz-gameplay-trailer-rock-band-3-tracks-not-importa/">Rock Band Blitz gameplay trailer; Rock Band 3 tracks not importable</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. It was revealed on G4's <a href="http://www.g4tv.com/videos/58009/harmonix-announces-rock-band-blitz/">X-Play</a> this evening, and showed gameplay similar to that of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rock-band-unplugged/">Rock Band Unplugged</a></em>. Dispensing with peripherals, the controller-based gameplay has dexterous finger gymnasts cruising down a note highway, hitting blocks and switching between instruments for maximum scores.<br /><br />The title will launch with 25 tracks, but the real coup is that the game can access the current <em>Rock Band</em> library on your console. The game also has access to the Rock Band Music Store for more DLC, meaning there are potentially over 3,500 tracks to import. As a bonus, the 25 songs that are bundled with the game are playable in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3"><em>Rock Band 3</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/rock-band-blitz/">Rock Band Blitz announced for PSN/XBLA, can access existing Rock Band DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 18:58:00 EST. Nearly 1,300 industry jobs exist in the Commonwealth, but a recent profile of Irrational Games by <a href="http://www.improper.com/features/game-theory">The Improper Bostonian</a> covers how the state's grip on gaming could slip if it doesn't step up studio stimulus.<br /><br />A bill for game developer incentives has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/05/mass-bill-proposes-stepping-up-states-game-dev-incentives/">floating around the Mass. legislature for about a year</a>, but hasn't gained traction with lawmakers. The state currently provides heavy cuts for the movie industry, despite the game industry pumping more cash into local economies.<br /><br />"It's ironic," Irrational Games' director of product development Tim Gerritsen said. "If you look at it, where do you want to put your money? We've got 120 permanent employees. They spend all their money here. They pay their rent here. They pay their taxes here. Do you want Dane Cook? He's here for two weeks doing a film, and he's gone."<br /><br />"When you talk about tax incentives, that's less revenue that you're receiving, so I think any kind of incentive would have to be linked to hard commitments from the private sector," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, who is coming off a win by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/15/pax-east-commits-to-boston-until-2023/">keeping PAX East in Boston until 2023</a>. The convention will also make donations totaling $325,000 over the next 11 years to <a href="http://www.massdigi.org/">MassDiGI</a>.<br /><br />The state did lose a major studio last year when former Red Sox player Curt Schilling's 38 Studios <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/23/38-studios-move-to-providence-ri-is-official/">moved to neighboring Rhode Island</a> for a $75 million loan. The state isn't likely to lose established studios like Harmonix, Demiurge and Turbine. He's so into it, in fact, that he donated just shy of $10,000 ($9,600) to Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert's Super PAC in 2011, making his the largest financial contribution that the political action committee has received.<br /><br />Colbert's camp disclosed Rigopulos' name and info along with many others to the FCC this week in a required move for Super PACs with contributors who donate more than $200. Of the $1,023,121 raised since Colbert launched his Super PAC, Rigopulos' donation makes up just under 1 percentage point -- not much in the context of the larger sum, but far larger than the average contributor (under $200).<br /><br />Harmonix confirmed the Rigopulos news with Joystiq, but declined to offer comment, presumably choosing to wait for that better tomorrow (which we're told may arrive tomorrow-ish).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/01/which-game-development-studio-head-was-the-top-colbert-super-pac/">Which game development studio head was the top Colbert Super PAC supporter?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 10:30:00 EST. That's about all the detail we have on that project, other than that Chan is working as lead designer -- as this information is straight from Chan's resume. Of course, judging by Harmonix's history, it'll either be a music game or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy:_AntiGrav">motion-controlled hoverboarding</a>.<br /><br />Harmonix was reticent about the project when we asked, unable to give us a clear answer due to the positioning of tongue in cheek. "As we've stated before," a representative told Joystiq, "our studio is growing and hard at work on a variety of titles. In a storied Harmonix tradition, our designers start working on those games before they're publicly announced." Harmonix will have more information "in the coming months, probably via a LinkedIn update or something - we haven't decided."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/30/harmonix-working-on-unannounced-xbla-psn-and-facebook-game/">Harmonix working on unannounced XBLA, PSN and Facebook game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 16:30:00 EST. You know how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dance-central-2"><em>Dance Central 2</em></a> is super fun because you can dance like a crazy person with utter disregard for the social consequences, thanks to the fact that you're alone in your own damn house? Well, take that same concept, add the watchful eyes of the entire Internet and remove any trace of humility or dignity, and you've got an exciting and new way to make a total fool out of yourself in 15 second bursts.<br />
<br />
The <em>Dance Central 2</em> <em>Dance Cam</em> app from Harmonix, available for free on iOS, Android and Windows Phone lets you choose snippets from 7 songs, record yourself dancing to said snippets and then "dancify" the resulting video, which can then be uploaded to Facebook or deleted forever in shame. The app also features dance-move diagrams for the included songs, just in case you ever find yourself suddenly and desperately unprepared for a dance battle while on public transportation.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/dance-central-dance-cam-app-electric-slides-onto-mobiles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dance Central Dance Cam app electric slides onto mobiles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/19/dance-central-dance-cam-app-electric-slides-onto-mobiles/">Dance Central Dance Cam app electric slides onto mobiles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 17:00:00 EST. Busta Rhymes is back in the public consciousness thanks in no small part to Chris Brown's hit <em>Look At Me Now</em>, which features Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and the most annoying slide-flute synth ever put into a commercial Top 40 hit. What better way to capitalize on the success of this song than by releasing a different, completely unrelated and far less successful song as DLC for your Kinect dancing game?<br />
<br />
Busta's 2008 single <em>Don't Touch Me (Throw Da Water On 'Em)</em> hits <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dance-central-2"><em>Dance Central 2</em></a> tomorrow for 240 Microsoft Points, featuring choreography by Devin Woolridge and a "Tough" difficulty rating. Let's just hope we don't have to dance as fast as Busta spits his lyrics.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/16/busta-rhymes-in-this-new-dance-central-2-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Busta Rhymes in this new Dance Central 2 DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/16/busta-rhymes-in-this-new-dance-central-2-dlc/">Busta Rhymes in this new Dance Central 2 DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jan 2012 11:49:00 EST. It would be hard to find two more disparate musical acts to combine into one blast of DLC, seeing how The Edgar Winter Group did everything it could to broaden the horizons of rock music, while Korn has done everything it can to narrow them back down.<br />
<br />
This week's update includes two iconic singles from both bands, one of which will be a blast from the past for anyone familiar with Harmonix's back catalogue. Both Edgar Winter Group tracks support keyboards, as one would hope.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/13/rock-band-weekly-korn-the-edgar-winter-group/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rock Band Weekly: Korn, The Edgar Winter Group</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/13/rock-band-weekly-korn-the-edgar-winter-group/">Rock Band Weekly: Korn, The Edgar Winter Group</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 23:59:00 EST. Oh, oh here they come, watch out boy, Hall and Oates will chew you up! For those unfamiliar with Hall and Oates, also known as Hall &amp; Oates, they were a "rock and soul" duo that ruled the charts of the early '80s. Three of their best tracks are available as <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly"><em>Rock Band</em> DLC</a> next week.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/rock-band-weekly-hall-and-oates/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rock Band Weekly: Hall and Oates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/rock-band-weekly-hall-and-oates/">Rock Band Weekly: Hall and Oates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 14:45:00 EST. When Viacom <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/04/report-harmonix-buyers-pay-49-99-accept-company-liabilities/">sold </a>developer Harmonix in November of 2010 for $50, it was really only the beginning of the drama to come. Almost exactly a year ago, ex-shareholders in Harmonix prior to Viacom's buyout of the music game developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/harmonix-founders-ex-shareholders-sue-viacom/">sued the conglomerate</a> for failing to pay performance based bonuses, which were agreed upon when Viacom bought the company back in 2006. Then, earlier this year, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/viacom-suing-former-harmonix-stockholders-for-over-131-million/">Viacom sued</a> those same stockholders for $131 million for "contractual overpayment." With us so far? Well, take a deep breath. It gets <em>better</em>.<br />
<br />
That lawsuit triggered a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitration_clause" target="_blank">mandatory arbitration clause</a> in the original contract, and now Viacom <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2011/12/viacom-rock-band-harmonix-383-million.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;dlvrit=71043">has revealed</a> to the LA Times that the private arbitrator in question has ordered the company to pay the former Harmonix shareholders $383 million.<br />
<br />
The story is still developing, and this isn't the last you'll hear of it: Viacom has filed in a Delaware Court to have the judgment overturned, because of "improperly excluded" evidence and testimony.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/27/viacom-ordered-to-pay-harmonix-several-trucks-full-of-money/">Viacom ordered to pay Harmonix several trucks full of money</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 19:40:00 EST. <em>Rock Band</em> is celebrating the 15th anniversary of Fueled By Ramen Records with a family pack of its more prominent artists. The spicy, high-sodium bundle includes tracks from Sublime, Travie McCoy, Cobra Starship and more. It will be available through the <em>RB</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly">Music Store</a> next week on Xbox 360 and Wii, and on PS3 once the update occurs after the holiday break.<br />

Na, na, na, na, na, come on! Chains and whips excite us, but so do these Rihanna tracks for <em>Dance Central 2</em>. Actually, "What's My Name" is lukewarm, but "S&amp;M" and "Only Girl (in the World)" more than make up for it.<br />
<br />
The Rihanna pack can be purchased tomorrow, December 20, for 640 MSP ($8), or for 240 ($3) a pop. The new tracks join other Rihanna ditties "Rude Boy" on <em>Dance Central 2</em>, "Pon de Replay" from <em>DC1</em> and "Disturbia," available as DLC.<br />
<br />
The Rihanna tracks arrive a month after <em>Dance Central 2</em> went go-go with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/dance-central-2-adds-more-lady-gaga/">Gaga</a>.

<em>Rock Band</em> will add seven Jimi Hendrix tracks to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-weekly">Music Store</a> next week, with two legacy songs receiving pro guitar and pro bass upgrades. The DLC includes several of Hendrix's most famous tracks, but everyone should be sure to take a trip "All Along the Watchtower."<br />

		<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Vidrhythm/">Vidrhythm</a></em>, Harmonix's video-splicing music sampling app, is now free. Not only has it gone gratis, but the <em>VidRhythm</em> v1.1 update adds 12 new tracks (to the 21 available), and includes some holiday classics like "Jingle Bells" and "Deck the Halls." The app also has pitch correction now for that one buddy who couldn't make the "BOM" sound in the right key.</div>

<br />
Finally, you get six new video styles and the option to export clips in 720p, delivering high-definition nightmares across the internet. <em>VidRhythm</em> was one of our selections in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/09/2011-holiday-buyers-guide-ios/">2011 Holiday Buyer's Guide for iOS</a> (just ignore that price now).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/vidrhythm-goes-free-adds-new-tracks-and-video-styles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VidRhythm goes free, adds new tracks and video styles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/vidrhythm-goes-free-adds-new-tracks-and-video-styles/">VidRhythm goes free, adds new tracks and video styles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 10:29:00 EST.
