BioShock Infinite has shipped over 3.7 million units, according to Take-Two interactive's year-end financials released today. The company noted the game experienced "significantly" higher first-month sales than any other BioShock release.

The company also mentioned it has seen solid demand for the BioShock Infinite Season Pass, but did not share any numbers. The Season Pass will include the game's three coming DLC packs.
BioShock Infinite air-mails 3.7 million units originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 May 2013 16:12:00 EST. Now he's in the process of leaving Irrational.

"I am very proud of the work that I did and of the team and what they were able to accomplish on Infinite," Fergusson says. "Now with the game shipped successfully, I've done what I set out to do here and now I'm looking forward to the next chapter in my life and career."

When Fergusson joined Irrational, he followed a trail of major departures from the studio, including Art Director Nate Wells and Design Lead Jeff McGann. The bland original cover already comes with artistic opposition, which was chosen by 38 percent of participants in an online fan vote.

Now, all the original designs up for the vote are available for printing, along with a few more custom designs, like the one we chose above. Covers are available in PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Irrational warns fans to follow the printing instructions and do a test run before wasting glossy paper. Despite a 75 percent sales drop after its launch week, Irrational's clouds-based shooter is numero uno for two weeks in a row. Just below it is Tomb Raider, maintaining its own impressive grip on the UK top two; that's five weeks now it's not budged.

Trion's shooter MMO Defiance marks its debut week by notching third place, and is the only new entry in the top 40. Gears of War: Judgment earns a third week appraisal of sixth, falling behind Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon in fifth. Meanwhile, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel and PGA Tour 14 endure second week drops to 15th and 17th respectively.

After just three weeks, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is nowhere to be seen in the top 40, although there may be more here than meets the eye. After placing seventh in its debut week, MH3U plummeted to a surprising 37th last week. However, Nintendo of Europe chief Satoru Shibata took to Twitter late last week to apologize "for the current stock shortage" of the Wii U and 3DS game "due to high demand." Shibata said new stock will "hopefully be available" this coming week.

Continue reading BioShock Infinite clings to top spot in this week's UK Charts

BioShock Infinite clings to top spot in this week's UK Charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 07:00:00 EST. The 2013 crown, however, still belongs to Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics' reboot makes it four weeks now in the UK top two - albeit helped by a 45 percent sales boost on the back of price promotions.

Gears of War: Judgment, last week's number one, slips back to third. Below it, three other new releases join BioShock Infinite in the top ten to close what's been a busy March. 3DS exclusive Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon takes fifth spot, while Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 come in sixth and eighth respectively.

Outside the top ten, the Wii U release of Lego City Undercover debuts at 12th, while Sly Cooper: Thieves of Time, which arrived for Vita and PS3 in Europe on March 27, is 31st.
Continue reading BioShock Infinite goes sky-high in this week's UK charts

BioShock Infinite goes sky-high in this week's UK charts originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 08:00:00 EST. I liked her. If you were hoping for something more - perhaps even the fabled Strong Female Character[TM] - you might be disappointed. There's no golf club moment, no singular twist around which the tale turns. Instead, Infinite provides a series of revelations that have you replaying earlier sections with a more enlightened, inquisitive eye."

VideoGamer (80/100): "It is fascinating, and also boring. It is important, yet forgettable. Its world is enticing and unappealing. It attempts to move things forward, yet is in places stuck in the past. For a game that has the potential to open the franchise up to a multitude of different ideas and interpretations, BioShock Infinite can feel curiously limited."

Metareview: BioShock Infinite originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Mar 2013 15:00:00 EST. Not only is it an evolving story that sees protagonist Booker DeWitt and the mysterious Elizabeth grow closer, but Irrational's latest deals with the hubris of a society built above the clouds, its ideals inflated with so much of the same hot air that propels it above the world below.

Though it touches on topics revolving around racism, religion, rebellion and revenge, these themes take a backseat to BioShock Infinite's primary topic: Love. The 105-minute video sees the Irrational co-founder cover everything from the nearly-here Infinite to his self-described lucky break into the industry.

The first half is Levine's talk, in which he opens by discussing how Irrational Games came to be before focusing on how the studio's vision brought it to Infinite and the character of Elizabeth, who Levine says is the third BioShock game's Big Daddy. The second half, from the 41 minute mark onwards, is a Q&A session touching on several subjects, including how Levine "killed" the BioShock movie and why he "compromised" on Infinite's box art.
Watch Ken Levine talk about BioShock Infinite at BAFTA originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. It's dead, it's all Ken Levine's fault, and this is how it went down: Pirates of the Caribbean's Gore Verbinski announced he was directing a BioShock movie in 2008, and said he wanted to make it a hard-R-rated film with "a lot of blood," Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine said during a BAFTA talk, reported by Eurogamer.

And then Watchmen came out and bombed by Hollywood standards, and the BioShock studio got cold feet. Verbinski originally wanted $200 million, but executives would commit to just $80 million, "and Gore didn't want to make a $80 million film," Levine said. Verbinski brought in a new director, 28 Weeks Later's Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but by March he was also out, and Levine had pulled the plug.

"They brought another director in, and I didn't really see the match there - and 2K's one of these companies that puts a lot of creative trust in people," Levine said. "So they said if you want to kill it, kill it. And I killed it."

A BioShock movie could get off the ground someday, maybe, Levine said. "It may happen one day, who knows, but it'd have to be the right combination of people." After all this public, back-and-forth teasing, we'd like to ask Levine if he'd kindly make a high-profile BioShock movie happen for real.
Levine: 'I killed' the BioShock movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 18:45:00 EST. Levine told IGN that while he wanted to see BioShock on Vita happen, it was out of his hands.

"I've got my fingers crossed that that's going to happen because it's something I want to do, but until somebody starts signing the checks, there's nothing I can do," Levine said. Later he continued, "At the end of the day, I work for Take-Two and they need to be able to fund that development, and they need to make sure they have a deal in place that makes sense for them and makes sense for Sony."

In March 2012, Levine expressed regret over announcing BioShock Vita without anything to show for it.

"I ideally wouldn't have talked about the Vita game when I did," he told Joystiq. "It was understandably important that, you know, Sony wanted us to share that information." The information that Irrational wants to create a BioShock Vita game is vastly different than Irrational actually developing one, of course.
BioShock Vita still hasn't entered development, this is why originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Feb 2013 15:00:00 EST. We've spoken to the boys and girls in our labs, and they tell us that means there are at least three pieces of BioShock Infinite DLC on the way.

The pass is priced $19.99 on PS3 and PC, or 1600 MSP on Xbox 360, and Irrational says it provides $10 worth of savings. So the three DLC packs come in at an average of $10 each, or 800 MSP.

A Season Pass purchase also <strike>pecks</strike> picks you up the Early Bird Special Pack, this giving you a machine gun damage upgrade, pistol damage upgrade, gold skin for both weapons, five Infusion bottles, and four pieces of gear, all for free.
Continue reading BioShock Infinite Season Pass includes three DLC packs

BioShock Infinite Season Pass includes three DLC packs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 09:30:00 EST. If you've never played System Shock 2, know it's not only one of the most influential horror games of all time, but one of the first games to make Ken Levine a household name in our household where we can't stop talking about Ken Levine.

System Shock 2 is available as a $9.99 download through GOG right now, compatible with Windows PCs. System Shock 2 is, at its core, a game about crossing barriers and embracing unconventional love, probably, so it's perfect for a Valentine's evening.
PSA: System Shock 2 now live on GOG originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 21:00:00 EST. The rights were secured by Night Dive Studios, and the game will be released via GOG tomorrow at 6AM ET. At a mere $10, it should make a wonderful, horrifying Valentine's Day gift. The timing of the Steam release remains a mystery.

For those unfamiliar with the 1999 PC classic, System Shock 2 is a first-person survival horror game with RPG elements. It was developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios, and it was designed by none other than Ken Levine (perhaps you've heard of him). If you need another point of reference, the BioShock series is considered a spiritual successor to System Shock. You like BioShock, right?

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a rather lengthy piece detailing how Night Dive managed to secure the rights and what to expect from the GOG.com release. The download will feature a great deal of bonus content, including concept art, an interview with Ken Levine and more. Again though, the takeaway is pretty simple: As of tomorrow, System Shock 2 is back, waiting for you to play it all over again or - if you're lucky - for the very first time.
System Shock 2 coming to GOG.com, Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Feb 2013 10:20:00 EST. Now you can own two of those characters, Elizabeth and one of the Boys of Silence, both made by the video game toy gurus at NECA.

The Elizabeth and Boys of Silence figures are available in the Irrational Games store for $20 each or $35 as a set. Irrational also added lithographs of the Handyman, Elizabeth and Songbird, and Charles, each for $25 or $65 for the trio. A limited edition trio includes signatures from Irrational creative director Ken Levine and artist Robb Waters, running $150.

NECA's Sky-Hook replica will also hit the Irrational Games store "soon," in a limited quantity. During development, his conversations with religious employees at Irrational created a major shift for one of Infinite's characters.

"One of the characters in the game was highly altered based upon some very interesting conversations I had with people on the team who came from a very religious background, and I was able to understand they were kind of upset about something," Levine tells OPM.

"What I said to them was, 'I'm not going to change anything to get your approval, but I think I understand what you're saying and I think I can do something that's going to make the story better, based on what you said.' So I did that, and I'm grateful for them bringing in their perspective. The last thing I wanted to do was change something because it offends somebody, but the thing they pointed out was making it a lesser story."

Infinite offers an intriguing blend of religion, philosophy and science, as we discovered last year. The city of Columbia is presented as a real-world heaven and its founder is a God-like prophet. The entire game hinges on the philosophy of objectivism and it addresses the pseudo-science of "the ether" and resurrection. That leaves plenty to talk about, religious or not.

The religion conversation for Infinite mirrors one Levine remembers during the original BioShock's development. "I think that we had a similar conversation about Bioshock 1," Levine says. "It involves infanticide, I don't think there's a larger taboo in the world. There were people who were very nervous about that. We didn't have that because we thought it would be cool. My feeling was if it's not just there to be exploitative, if it's true to the story and you're telling something that you think is honest, then everything has a place."
BioShock Infinite character 'highly altered' after the religion talk originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 19:45:00 EST. We'd even wager that most modern-ish non-gaming laptops will be able to run Infinite, albeit at "Low" settings, provided that they run Vista (at least), rock an Intel Core 2 Duo/AMD Athlon X2 processor and have DirectX10 compatible on-board graphics.

Irrational Games also dropped news that the PC version of Infinite will include controller support and is compatible with Steam's Big Picture Mode, in addition to supporting multiple monitors for those who really exceed the minimum system requirements. The game also spans three DVDs, due to the size of its textures. The full list of both Minimum and Recommended specifications can be found after the break.
Continue reading BioShock Infinite's PC specs revealed

BioShock Infinite's PC specs revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Jan 2013 16:30:00 EST. The art chosen won 38% of fan votes on the poll posted by studio head Ken Levine earlier this month as the result of displeasure from fans over the game's official box art.

The art, the full version of which can be found after the break, will be printed on the other side of the BioShock Infinite cover. Levine noted that other alternate covers will be made available for fans to print.

Now hopefully we've all learned our lesson: It's what's on the inside that counts.
Continue reading BioShock Infinite reverse art revealed

BioShock Infinite reverse art revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 23 Dec 2012 12:00:00 EST. "His score is very different from the first two games, yet very much guided by the same aesthetic principles. We were lucky to have him and I can't wait until you get to hear some of his stuff. He's working in a different, sparer style, but it's awesome."

Aside from the BioShock series, Schyman's resume also includes work on XCOM<strike>: Enemy Unknown</strike> and Dante's Inferno, among others, though nothing he's worked on before now has featured such a strong emphasis on psychic horse repair. Studio head Ken Levine asks in a post on the Irrational site for fans to vote on one of six covers:

"But what's that you say? You want even more choice in covers? We're also going to be arranging a whole mess of MORE alternate covers which will be available to download and print yourself," Levine writes. "Of course, these are free and we'd love to hear your thoughts in the [Irrational] forums as to what you'd like to see."

The cover art PR campaign comes a week after the brotastically boring cover for the fantastical Infinite was revealed. Levine mentioned shortly after the cover art drama that the box art was made for uninformed players who don't read news on gaming sites. So, you know, if you're reading this, go vote on what you want the actual cover for BioShock Infinite to be on your shelf.
Vote for BioShock Infinite's b-side cover originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST.
