For $8.99 a month you can turn off all the ads on the site, get priority customer support, and unlock a special badge, chat colors, and custom emoticons that only Twitch Turbo subscribers can use. Twitch also streams lots of eSports events and other videos that would otherwise be interrupted by commercials.

If you subscribe to knock the ads off completely, eligible Twitch broadcasters will still be paid for their views. Twitch says this is "just the beginning of what we hope to offer through Twitch Turbo," and that more "benefits and enhancements" for both viewers and broadcasters (including the official Joystiq Twitch channel) are likely coming soon.
Twitch introduces ad-free Turbo subscription service originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 01:00:00 EST.
It's difficult to detach yourself from an enthusiastic outlook when you've spent six years of your life in a professional possibility that didn't exist two decades ago. It takes every modern circumstance gestating and growing in parallel just to get me here. The internet's eradication of geography, the viability of internet publications and the need for critical voices alongside a burgeoning games industry have provided the time and the place for this very post from a new editor-in-chief -- written by one eager South African who got hooked on a Mad Libs game on his hand-me-down IBM XT.

I'm sure all the writers at Joystiq (and those announcing their departure today) have similar stories, hinged on a sequence of events compressed together by passion, dedication and, if we're being honest, a tinge of obsession. The team will be different next year, but our editorial standards will remain and our goals will be augmented. And yes, we'll assertively kick ass. People listen once they realize I'm moving to America and increasing my proximity to their asses.

Joystiq's new core team is going forward with the majority of writers that have filled the front page for years. JC Fletcher brings his encyclopedic brain and wry wit to the Managing Editor position, where his unflinching work ethic will radiate raw guilt into everyone below. Richard Mitchell is aptly equipped to be Reviews Editor -- a role that requires an articulate, organized and thoughtful persona, and a keen understanding of our praise-to-stars conversion formula.

Getting the daily news and commentary in front of you is crucial to Joystiq, so Alexander Sliwinski is stepping up into a new position as News Editor. He'll use his exemplary reporting skills and instincts to keep you in the loop every day, alongside Senior Reporter Ben Gilbert, our feisty, hardworking New York newshound. And where would we be without Dave Hinkle, our Associate Editor and dependable anchor in San Francisco?

Those aren't all the positions we're busy creating or filling, but we've already got the biggest full-time staff in Joystiq history. In addition, you'll be reading a lot more from the industry's talented freelance writers, including our own editors Jordan Mallory and Jess Conditt. Congratulations on making it through the weekend-only wringer, guys!

So, how do you encapsulate the paradox of telling readers that things won't change, but everything will change and everything will be better? It's not done easily, and not succinctly. I believe it enough to get on a one-way flight to another continent, but you won't need to perform such a dramatic gesture. All you have to do is load up the site and see it embedded every day going forward. I hope that you'll continue reading Joystiq as an informative, amusing and engaging snapshot of each day in this tumultuous industry, and that you'll trust me when I say exciting things are on the way.

No, I'm not seriously still talking about myself. I mean like website things.
Yesterday we showed off our prize-winning design by Mr. Josh Smith, which we're sure you're still reeling from. We hope, however, that you haven't completely stuffed your eyeballs because they'll want to feast on the design we're about to show you from our buddy, Cory Schmitz.

Not only does it just look cool, but it also features two references to the infamous Joystiq theme days. We love it a lot, and we hope you do too. Ready? We're sure you're already feverishly working on your T-shirt designs for Joystiq; we just wanted to remind you that you've only got until Sunday to submit yours. One winner is going to get their T-shirt made by Joystiq and get a console of their choice with five randomly selected games, so get to designing. Complete rules and submission guidelines are after the break.

Just a note: Don't feel like you have to prominently feature our logo. As our boy Petey M. demonstrates, our last winner had a really cool image with the Joystiq name just sort of lovingly placed at the side. Good luck!
(Update: Technically, the winner of our T-shirt contest in 2006 was Mr. Philip Palermo. Here's his great shirt.)
Continue reading Reminder: Design a Joystiq T-shirt and win a console with games!

Reminder: Design a Joystiq T-shirt and win a console with games! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Sep 2011 16:30:00 EST. When you, freshly showered, throw open your bedroom closet and decide how you'll hide your shame that day, don't you wish a Joystiq garment could be among your options? In fact, don't answer that, it's rhetorical. You've been asking for years for another Joystiq T-shirt design contest, and it's finally happening: In the coming weeks, we'll soon be rolling out two Joystiq T-shirt designs for sale, perfect for shielding your thorax from the elements.

Unlike the last time we did this, we've commissioned an artist to create a design for us, and you're just going to love what he's working on. Well, we bet you will -- he hasn't made it yet -- but he's done enough cool gaming-related stuff in the past that we have plenty of faith.

But of course, the shirts are still going to be gracing the thoraxes of our readers and we wanted to give you the chance to leave your thumbprint on the annals of sartorial Joystiq history. We're not looking to con free work out of you pros, mind you -- we want everyone with a great idea, some gumption and a working knowledge of MS Paint to have a chance. (Of course, if you happen to be a pro who just wants to show off, we won't turn our nose up at you.) Besides, whatever money we make on the shirts, we're putting right back into free ones to give away at events.

So come up with a cool, completely original design for a Joystiq shirt (rules and suggestions after the break) and send a high-quality JPEG our way. Between the Joystiq staff and readers, we'll select our favorite, and that artist will win their choice of a 360, PS3 or Wii and five randomly selected games for that system. Plus, assuming the design's dope enough, we'll make it into a real shirt!

You've got two weeks, so what are you waiting for? Go get your ... you know, brushes or whatever it is one uses for T-shirt designing. We don't know. That's why you're doing it.
Continue reading Design a Joystiq shirt and win a console with games!

Design a Joystiq shirt and win a console with games! originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 16:30:00 EST. As the Joystiq staff barrels toward Los Angeles over the course of today, each staffer will come packing his own set of tools to tackle the coming week. As you already know, the E3 festivities begin Monday morning and go strong for four days, so it goes without saying that these gear pictures don't include the countless gallons of caffeinated beverages which will be consumed -- chock 1.5 iced coffees to me thus far today -- not to mention other precious energy-providing items.

Head into the gallery below for an in-depth look at how the sausage gets made. You don't go to sleep without your Dave Hinkle action figures. Your walls are covered with paparazzi photos of Ludwig Kietzmann's exclusive beach tryst with Dead Space Girl. You still pine for the blue and orange color scheme. You are, in short, a Joystiq fanatic. Or hey, maybe you've never heard of Joystiq, but you love video games more than air. Either way, if you're ready to turn that passion into dauntingly large piles of cold, hard cash we may just be ready for you. Over the next couple of weeks, Joystiq will be hiring a few new staffers.

We've just got a couple more days until the end of voting in the 2011 Webbys and, frankly, we're starting to get a little nervous. After a brief, shining moment in 2nd place yesterday, Joystiq is now firmly ensconced in 4th.
To help you be the hero we need, we've created a helpful audio-visual walkthrough that you can find right after the break. We hope you like it. Game Informer is bucking the death of print, increasing its audience over the past year by another 800,000 readers and topping out at a "paid and verified" circulation of 4,364,170, according to a new report by media monitoring service BurrellesLuce. The magazine is just a measly 100K-and-change subscribers away from surpassing National Geographic and landing in the top five of most-circulated U.S. consumer magazines -- and it's not even for old folks!

Published by GameStop Corp., a one-year Game Informer subscription is included with the mega-retailer's PowerUp Rewards Pro membership (and was previously bundled with its now defunct Edge card). So, yeah -- we're all subscribers. You're welcome, GameStop.
Report: Game Informer bigger than Time, People and O, more circulated than Family Circle originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. We know there are a lot of choices on Apple's iPhone App Store. When we told you about the Joystiq app, you may have thought to yourself, "What can Joystiq offer me in an app that mobile Safari can't bring me?" Or maybe you thought, "There's no way I'm deleting Tilt to Live to make room for the Joystiq app." And look, those are both great questions. So we put this video together to show you what the Joystiq app has to offer.

If you've already downloaded the app, here's the part where we once again ask you to rate or review the app on iTunes. If you're not sure how to do that, we show you at the beginning of the video. Did you know that PAX East was originally going to be called "the Joystiq Expo?" That's a flagrant lie, but considering the number of Joystiq-related events scattered throughout the show, you'd be hard pressed to think otherwise. If you want to hang out with the stars of the Joystiq Podcast and the rest of the Joystiq east coast crew - and even earn a chance to win one of these super limited edition Andrew Ryan figurines, courtesy of our pals at Irrational Games - make sure you stop by every one of these many events:

Blueberry Muffin-Tops Breakfast brought to you by Malt-O-Meal
Saturday, 8AM
Start the day right with a free bowl of Justin McElroy's favorite breakfast cereal.
Get Ready For Love: The Joystiq Podcast LIVE!
Manticore Theatre - Saturday, 8:30pm
It'll be just like the show you love, except you'll be forced throughout to stare at the terrifying visage of the hosts. So, in short, a spectacle in every sense of the word. Come early -- there will be giveaways. [more info]

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Game Journalism...
Manticore Theatre - Sunday, 2:30pm
Chris Grant and a team of esteemed gaming peons will answer any and all questions you have about the art and craft of getting paid to write about games (it's a tough life). Review scores. Swag. Junkets. Bias. The death of magazines. The rise of blogs. It's all fair game. [more info]

Sequelitis Snake Oil: Quack Medicine for the Video Game Industry
Manticore Theatre - Sunday, 4:00pm
This panel will seek to diagnose the video game industry's purported "sequelitis" by way of discussion from thoughtful panelists, including Irrational Games' Ken Levine; Obsidian's Chris Avellone; Harmonix's Dan Teasdale; Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann; and moderator Chris Grant (from Joystiq!). Mr. Levine is bringing five of the above, super limited edition Andrew Ryan figurines. There are only 200 of these in existence and they're not for sale anywhere - so come early. [more info]

Let's get this straight: There are rumors about video games, and then there are crazy internet rumors about video games that are so intriguing you can't help but get excited about them, even though you don't believe they're anything more than products of an overactive fan imagination. This post is about the second kind.

Information has bubbled up from the Japanese 2chan message board about the new Wii Zelda game and, while 2chan's record on rumors hasn't been bad (they've broken information on Japanese anime, Resident Evil and other games that later turned out to be true), these rumors are crazy. Like Majora's Mask crazy. See what we mean after the break.
Continue reading Rumor: Zelda Wii to be Majora's Mask sequel

Rumor: Zelda Wii to be Majora's Mask sequel originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 21:00:00 EST.
See that shocked look on Thrall's face above? That guy's the leader of the Horde, and he just read (on WoW.com, of course) that for the first time, players of World of Warcraft will be able to switch their factions -- players will be able to leave his Horde, and those dirty Alliance might come to his side. We've been spending the past few nights <strike>teamkilling</strike> Plundering, Deathmatching and Co-opping in the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta, and it's been extremely fun. Right now the game is limited to custom parties of 5, but at launch it will support parties of 10, so you can take two teams of friends head to head in Plunder and Deathmatch, while Co-op supports 2 or 3 players.

So what did we think about it? Head beyond the break to see the writeup and to watch video from our sessions, and to see the list of what we liked and what we didn't like. Naughty Dog is asking for feedback on the beta, so maybe they'll be able to tweak some things before launch. However the "fun" knob was definitely turned up to 11, so we weren't complaining (much). Except when we got pwned.

Gallery: Uncharted 2: Multiplayer

Continue reading Team Joystiq plays the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta

Team Joystiq plays the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Jun 2009 18:15:00 EST. It's hard if not impossible for Team Joystiq to decide on a place to eat dinner, so choosing the coolest thing we saw at E3 was all but unthinkable. Instead, we asked each member of the team to pick the best thing they saw at the show, with very few restrictions. And here are the results:

Joystiq's Best of E3 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 06 Jun 2009 13:00:00 EST. We've been getting tons of questions about the annual, totally rad Joystiq Reader Meetup and we can finally give you the details.

So, Thursday at 6 p.m., you need to get yourself to h.wood. It's in Hollywood at 1738 N. Orange (map). We're going to have a cash bar, some food and tons of free crap to give away. Plus, you can meet all your favorite Joystiq staffers which is, of course, the greatest gift of all. Also, it's all ages!

Please come. It'll be fun. No, really!

When: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. PST
Where: 1738 N. Mark the occasion: 11:10am E3 Time (that's 2:10pm Joystiq Time). The first Joystiq footsoldiers have touched down in LA, taken up defenses in a local Starbucks, and begun planning for coordinated pickups from the nearby LAX transportation facility. For the next five days, our highly trained video game Blog Force will infiltrate the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and surgically extract all the "scoops" and "hot stories" our rusty old internet trucks can possibly deliver back to you, Reader.

To that end, you'll want to make a note: for our fully optimized E3 experience, you can redirect your internet browser of choice to e3.joystiq.com where we're collecting not only all of Team Joystiq's stories, but also presenting stories from our colleagues at Engadget, Massively, Big Download, and GameDaily.

Let's go!
E3 2009: We're here! originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 31 May 2009 14:25:00 EST. We've brought all of our blogger nerd gear with us, but this guy one-upped us by traveling with his very own guitar controller, complete with a flair-filled strap. It's a rare treat that was made all the more memorable through a musical performance that we were (unfortunately) dragged into. Rhythm Heaven is an upcoming DS game that features a series of simple music-based rhythm games. This real life demonstration of one of the mini-games was meant to highlight the quirky charm of the game, while highlighting its elegant simplicity.

It was a fun experiment, to be sure -- but we'll stick with playing on our DS systems from now on. Expect an early review of the game on Joystiq in the coming weeks.
Nintendo performs live demonstration of Rhythm Heaven originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 12:55:00 EST. IGN reports that multiple sources from within LucasArts and beyond have stated that all development on an upcoming X360/PS3 Indiana Jones game has been canceled. Our investigative sister-site, Joystiq, contacted LucasArts and it appears the situation isn't as clear-cut as rumors indicate.

"LucasArts remains absolutely committed to the Indiana Jones franchise," a representative for LucasArts told Joystiq. "While we are aware that fans have been eagerly awaiting additional information on the upcoming game, they can rest assured that details are forthcoming."

LucasArts is vague about the future of the game itself, instead opting to address its commitment to the franchise as a whole. It appears new details for an upcoming Indiana Jones title could spell the bright future or complete demise of the long-teased adventure. Only time will tell.
Indiana Jones rumored to be canceled, LucasArts still "committed" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 14:45:00 EST.
So LittleBigPlanet is complete. You know this from our interview at Leipzig. We've been covering the game pretty closely since its reveal at GDC 2007, so we wanted something a little special for our PAX 2008 coverage. What could be more special than building the Joystiq logo and stickering the thing to death, before riding off in a fully-functional tank? We've sped it up and added some music you might be familiar with, to give you a bite sized, level building experience. Hopefully, for the LittleBigObsessed, we'll have the full 15 minute video available for you to check out soon.

Sackboys build the Joystiq logo originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 13:30:00 EST. First of all, thanks to everyone that managed to make it out to the party! There were a ridiculous amount of attendees, all of whom enjoyed some Call of Duty 4 on the PS3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii and copious amounts of Rock Band and Rock Band 2. It was a blast and, unsurprisingly, the massive piles of swag went fairly quick. It was a wonderful experience and it was a pleasure meeting all of you. Hopefully, we can do this again next year!

For those of you who couldn't make it out there, check out the gallery below. Within, you'll even find a picture of our very own Mike Sylvester (of Revolutionary fame!). He's a local, so thanks to him, but mostly to all of you, for making it out!

Gallery: DS Fanboy/Joystiq meet-up

Post-E3 DS Fanboy/Joystiq reader meetup in photos originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST. The turnout was great (something close to 300 readers attended), we ate some pizza, chit-chatted some, gave out a couple hundred pounds of swag and the highlight of the meetup was Rock Band 2. You read correctly, the guys from Harmonix showed up with Rock Band 2 (which is freakin' amazing btw) and new instruments in hand to let everyone try out the new setup. All in all it was a great way to close out the E3 week and for those who attended, we send a gigantic "thank you!" your way. Without your support we'd be nothing but a few sad and lonely fanboys.

Check out the photographic reader meetup recap below and for more meetup coverage, jump on over to Joystiq and browse their photos too.

We were as perplexed as the next gamer when a mysterious Joystiq branded faceplate showed up during Microsoft's E3 keynote yesterday. We spent much of the evening deciphering clues, following up on leads, calling in favors, meeting with shady characters in dark alleys. Basically, we found out nothing.

So imagine our surprise today while we were confirming our facetime with the Fallout 3 Bethesda crowd. It was as if the heavens parted and an angelic hand from heaven lowered said faceplate right into our laps. It turns out we didn't dream it. It's real. That's why we're doing it again this year, partnering with our gentle overlords over at Joystiq for the second annual E3 Joystiq reader meetup in Santa Monica next week! At Mahalo's headquarters, no less!

The E3 reader meetup will feature plenty of social fun, free food and drinks, a bunch of video games to play (hooked up to a few very expensive projectors) and hundreds upon hundreds of pieces of swag will be given away. Over 200+ pounds of swag, ranging from video games to faceplates to peripherals to wearable swag. All being given away for FREE at the meetup! Though, we must admit, the most important reason you should attend is to meet the X3F crew. Yup, Richard and Dustin will both be in attendance along with a bunch of the Joystiq bloggers. Good times will be had!

Be a social butterfly, stop by Mahalo HQ next Thursday, mingle a bit, win some swag, get your game on, meet the blogging crew and smile from ear to ear. Everyone can attend and don't forget to RSVP.

When: 6-10:00PM pacific on Thursday, July 17th
Where: Mahalo HQ, 902 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90401 (map it!)
Who: Every man, women and child of every age.
