This Wednesday brings the return of vehicular madness with Trials Evolution, while next week brings Bloodforge and Deep Black: Episode 1, an underwater action game we haven't heard about since 2010.

On the Deal of the Week front, this week is LEGO themed, with 25 percent off the Games on Demand versions of LEGO Batman, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. In the US, that puts LEGO Batman and LEGO Indiana Jones at $15, and LEGO Star Wars at $22.50. Next week, XBLA's NBA Jam: On Fire Edition will be reduced from $15 to $10.
Coming to Xbox Live: Deep Black, LEGO deals, more originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST. It is an especially cool and extravagant model, however. Pollock plans to build the entirety of Super Mario Bros. world 1-1, a project that requires an estimated 780,000 1x1 bricks.

In addition to creating a showpiece for Lego conventions, Comic-Con, and PAX, Pollock has lofty goals for the project. It will "test the waters for a foundation I would like to start that will work with children doing healing art projects using Lego bricks." Should the "epic Mario" sculpture be successfully Kickstarted, construction will take place in "building parties" in Portland, and will result in a totally huge, amazing thing.
Kickstarter seeks funds for many Lego bricks to make Super Mario Bros. world 1-1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Apr 2012 17:30:00 EST. Their small, undeveloped brains clearly don't have the faculties to appreciate the creativity and power of LEGOs. No kid could create the awesome transforming LEGO Game Boy and Tetris cartridge seen above.

The duo are named Domaster and Tetrawing, the result of about a month's effort. Inside the Game Boy, you can actually see two LEGO AA batteries -- a nice touch, if we may say so. Said project managed to accrue the required 10,000 supporters in a matter of days and has since been under review by the fine people at LEGO. Until now, as the LEGO Cuusoo blog has revealed that the Minecraft project has passed the LEGO review, meaning it will become an official LEGO product.

While the set isn't quite ready for primetime, LEGO Cuusoo notes that LEGO is "developing a concept that celebrates the best aspects of building with the LEGO system and in Minecraft." The site asks for patience, adding that "these things take time."

Indeed, we don't envy the task of translating the vibrant world of Minecraft into a set of sparsely detailed square blocks.
Minecraft LEGO set passes review, will become official product originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST.

Mojang has officially begun courting a relationship with LEGO, with the ultimate goal of creating an official Minecraft set of the popular building blocks. The company announced the initiative on Cuusoo, a site devoted to helping amateur (plastic) bricklayers make a connection with the LEGO company.

The concept is simple, builders propose an idea for a LEGO set and, should said idea gain 10,000 supporters, it will be reviewed officially by LEGO. If LEGO decides to produce the set, the project's creator will receive a royalty. Should the Minecraft set reach production, Mojang has promised to donate its royalty to charity. The project is well on its way to an official review, with nearly 1,000 supporters, though Mojang's Daniel Kaplan tweeted that the company is also "working directly with LEGO" to make the project a reality.

Legos make everything better -- if you need proof, simply play the video above. Entitled Bricks of War, it's a pretty great interpretation of the Locust genocide Marcus Fenix is responsible for. We've been known to have a bit of a penchant for LEGO ourselves, but the kits we snap together usually come with diagramed instructions and have more to do with fanciful medieval castles than brutal alien slaughter, and they sure as hell aren't life-size, functional engineering marvels.

PlumBrothers' 1:1 scale Lancer is one of the most impressive LEGO builds we've seen in a long, long time, partly due to its aesthetically accurate construction, but mostly because of the boggling amount of engineering that went into this thing. Not only is it a working rubber-band gun, but the weapon's rubber payload is loaded into working clips. Once the safety (!!) is disabled, the user has their choice of single or burst firing modes at their disposal. The chainsaw even moves and everything.
Have you ever wanted some form of evaluation for your Lego model-building expertise? Other than, of course, your overbearing mother patting you on your head, telling you that you're her "most special little construction worker?" The Lego Group has come up with a clever way for you to receive the positive reinforcement you crave: By playing Life of George, an iOS title which tasks you with recreating objects with Lego bricks, judging you on your speed and accuracy.

It does so using a $30 kit that you can purchase from the Lego store starting October 1, which includes all the requisite bricks and a "green screen-like" building mat. Players can build co-operatively to recreate 120 different models, or build their own models that will then be playable once they're scanned into the game. Check out more details in the press release posted after the jump, you most special little construction worker, you.
Continue reading Life of George turns Lego building into an iOS game

Life of George turns Lego building into an iOS game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 04:00:00 EST.

LEGO Halo is, unfortunately, still an April Fool's joke. But if Bungie or Microsoft ever do want to put it together, maybe Benny Brickster can help. He's modeled a number of different Halo vehicles, from the Covenant's Ghost all the way up to the gigantic Pelican, in the excellent and versatile LEGO medium.

The Pelican is quite a feat in itself, sitting over 26 inches long, with wings so heavy they need their own stands. The back door even opens and closes. Next up, Brickster plans to expand the Covenant forces, building a Wraith, a Phantom, and possibly even a seven-foot long full-scale Assault Carrier. We won't lie: Building something like that would make him a real master, chief.
A whole fleet of LEGO Halo vehicles, ready for deployment originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 23:00:00 EST. Elderly Ezio and his templar pals get real, real adorable when they're re-created with Legos, as seen in this miniaturized version of the AC: Revelations trailer from E3. The production values aren't quite as impressive as before, but it's got plenty of heart.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer goes Lego

Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer goes Lego originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 10:30:00 EST. And here we thought our AT-ATs and 55 Central Park (you know, the Ghostbusters' building) Lego diddies were neat ideas -- not even close. If you're as obsessed with the boy who lived as we are, this summer's final chapter in the Harry Potter film series is unlikely to sate your desire for British wizardry. Thankfully, Warner Bros. has announced that the next entry in the Lego Harry Potter series will arrive on pretty much anything that plays video games, sometime "this holiday."

Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 follows Harry and co. through the treacherous final years at Hogwarts, leading up to the seventh book's catastrophic conclusions. Interestingly, the game is one of a handful of announced games for Sony's forthcoming system, the NGP (in addition to the PSP -- they're going to live alongside each other, remember?)

If Lego HP lives up to its promise of launching on all those consoles this holiday, it looks like North America is still set to be one of the first territories getting Sony's new handheld before year's end. Reps from WBIE hadn't gotten back to us as of publishing.
Brandon Bannerman has found the quickest, most direct path to our hearts: He's combined our love of Legos with our love of Portal's omnipresent antagoinst, GLaDOS. If this doesn't get picked up as an official model by the toy blocks manufacturer, you can be certain that we're going to cry forever.
Continue reading Lego GLaDOS warms our cold, monstrous hearts

Lego GLaDOS warms our cold, monstrous hearts originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Apr 2011 23:30:00 EST. The Lego Group has acquired Lego Universe -- and most of the NetDevil developers who were part of the project. A Gazillion representative explained to Joystiq that before Gazillion's acquisition of NetDevil, NetDevil had already begun Lego Universe as a work-for-hire project, and now Lego has bought the rights from Gazillion for Lego Universe itself.

"The transition of members of our team to the Lego Group allows us to conclude the work-for-hire segment of NetDevil's business and lets us expand our internally-published, free-to-play game businesses," said David Brevik, President and COO of Gazillion. "We're proud of the Lego Universe game that our team built, and we are certain that it has a bright future."

Gazillion notes there was a "minor staff reduction" at NetDevil, but that most of the staff was retained by Lego. Lego System A/S is expected to take over the space that NetDevil is currently occupying, and the remaining non-Lego-aligned NetDevil staffers are moving to a new building. NetDevil is currently working on Fortune Online, with Gazillion unable to comment on the status of Jumpgate Evolution due to the current legal entanglement.

Update: Following up on NetDevil's "minor staff reduction," a Gazillion rep told us: "Less than a quarter of the Lego Universe team was let go with the transition."

We weren't able to obtain NetDevil's prior or current head count, but we were told that 40 people are working on the Fortune Online project, which is the studio's key focus.
Lego Group purchases Lego Universe and dev team from Gazillion originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 13:02:00 EST. Disney and WB revealed that Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game will be released on Nintendo 3DS in May, alongside versions for Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, PC, Mac, and DS -- and alongside the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides movie, of course.

The 3DS version includes a few exclusive features, like support for the system's pedometer-acquired "Play Coins," and a StreetPass feature, "Pirate Duels," that automatically engages virtual Lego pirates against one another when two 3DS systems come within communication range -- with even more Play Coins awarded to the winner.

Gallery: Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (3DS)

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean coming to 3DS with exclusive StreetPass feature originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 15:20:00 EST. Apparently, LucasArts needs just a little more time than it anticipated to adequately polish the lightsabers of Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars -- the game has been pushed from its initial February 15 release date to March 22. Or, as a character from Lego Star Wars 3 might pronounce it, "Uhhnnn, aaahhh! Eeeeeaaaahh!"

No reason for the delay accompanied the announcement, but we're gonna make an educated guess that it has something to do with the ridiculous amount of resources the company poured into the game's Flash-based website. (Seriously, check that thing out! It's like a game in and of itself.)

Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars delayed to March 22 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. Disney may have sunk Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, but the franchise will still hit the high seas of retail next spring with Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game in May. The latest adaptation to be built on TT Games' Lego foundation will launch on all major consoles, portable game systems and PC, right alongside the upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

In the game, swashbuckling blockhead Jack Sparrow and, err, 70 other playable characters relive events from the first three movies (The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End), along with moments from the fourth. If you're still clicking with this miniaturized take on popular franchises, you'll be able to speed the wait along with Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, due next February.
Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game sets sail May 2011 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. LucasArts has announced that Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars, based on the popular animated series, will enter the retail galaxy on February 15 in North America (and Feb. 18 in the UK). Yes, another one of those Lego games -- but this one introduces a few novelties, including "scene swap," where players switch between teams in separate locations to complete multi-part objectives, and boss battles. The game will also feature some real-time strategy elements.

Based on our look at the game, Lego Star Wars 3 could just be the most polished Lego game yet -- and it'll need to be to bring back the large following of the first two games. The Clone Wars series might be a solid extension of the Star Wars franchise, but it's nowhere near as well known as the films ... even the films we wish we could forget.
We've seen Wii Remotes of all shapes, sizes and colors, but peripheral manufacturer Power A has managed to break the mold once again by offering a controller made entirely of pure imagination. And also plastic and machinery and stuff -- but mostly pure imagination. The Lego Play and Build Wii Remote allows its handler to affix 31 included bricks to its surface, completely customizing its hull, though we imagine users could also attach thousands of Lego to the controller, turning it into a monstrous, unwieldy Wii Monolith.

The controller, which is now shipping to Toys R' Us at a $39.99 price point, is compatible with Wii MotionPlus, as well as most other first- and third-party accoutrements. It is not, however, compatible with K'Nex, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Erector Sets or Duplo bricks.
Continue reading Power A constructs the Lego Play and Build Wii Remote

Power A constructs the Lego Play and Build Wii Remote originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST. Hey, fans of Apple products love stacking things on top of other things to make bigger things too, you know. That's why NetDevil recently opened up Lego Universe's closed beta process to Mac users. Potential stackers and builders can hop on the wagon by going to the game's official Beta Center and applying to join up.

These new players are getting in at an opportune time -- though the beta's currently only playable on certain days of the week, the game's official site promises that "it won't be long before the game servers will be open 24/7, which means non-stop playtime - woohoo!" That was their woohoo, not ours, though we can certainly see why that's cause for celebration.
Lego Universe closed beta now available on Mac originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 19:30:00 EST. We've seen a few of the bright and generally welcoming environments of Lego Universe -- today, we get a look a few screenshots from the MMO's Gnarled Forest area. We never would have assumed a game about toy heroes could contain such ominous imagery. Check out the images after the break.
What would the appropriate spell be called? Financialus Maximus? Cashius Give-it-all-to-us? Look, we're not hip to this Harry Potter thing the kids are into, but with the latest Warner Bros. financial earnings showing Lego Harry Potter: Years 1 - 4 has "shipped over 2.7 million units," we want in. The game launched on June 29 and received favorable marks across the board, even from yours truly.

Of course, it should be noted that "shipped" does not equal sold -- copies of the game could very well be sitting on store shelves right now. Regardless, don't expect you'll be seeing the last of these Lego games anytime soon.
Lego Harry Potter ships over 2.7 million units originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 18:20:00 EST.

Considering a LEGO StarCraft video game would require some mind-bending collaboration (or buyout) between WBIE and Activision-Blizzard, we'll just have to experience the fantasy through some stop-motion animation.

Created by Kooberz Studios, the animation uses audio from the original StarCraft over some brick-elated visuals. The four and a half minute clip has everything the RTS series is known for: SCV resource collection, base-building, fog of war and a zerg rush by the Protoss that ends the whole thing before your tea even has time to steep. Check it out after the break.
Continue reading StarCraft + LEGO = this video

StarCraft + LEGO = this video originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 02:00:00 EST. Dire Wolf Digital and NetDevil have signed an agreement that will see the creation of a LEGO Universe trading-card game, due in 2011. (The Lego Universe MMO is set to launch on October 26.) What makes this deal interesting is the potential to create products outside of just the TCG.

The agreement gives Dire Wolf Digital "a license to produce physical TCG products as well as digital products for PC, Mac and mobile devices." This could portend the TCG will come to digital spaces or it could simply refer to additional products outside of the card game -- as soon as we know something, we'll be sure to pass it along.
If you're wondering what it would take to best Rockstar's dust-em-up, Red Dead Redemption, in a battle for UK chart supremacy, it would seem it only takes a wizard -- a blocky, mute interpretation of the nation's own Harry Potter. It only makes sense that Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 would debut at the top spot. Isn't he like the UK's Prime Minister now?

The boy with a scarred forehead has pushed nearly everyone down a spot from last week: Red Dead Redemption has fallen to second, while Super Mario Galaxy 2 now takes up third. Also of note are strong UK debuts of several games, including Naughty Bear, Demon's Souls and Transformers: War for Cybertron. There's no question at all: Lego Universe is a game built for children. Creative Director Ryan Seabury says the primary audience of the game is ages 8-12, and the interface is very clearly young user-friendly, with big, brightly colored buttons, and easy-to-use UI widgets. The game centers on collecting "imagination," and while there is combat in the game, it's simple and trouble-free, more fun than strategic.

But here's the thing: good game design is ageless. And Lego Universe seems like a tidy summation of everything both developer NetDevil has learned about making MMOs, and Lego has learned over 75 years of making classic toys.
We got this business <strike>card</strike> LEGO person from LEGO Universe Creative Director Ryan Seabury yesterday, and every single person we have showed it to since agrees that it is indeed the best form of sharing contact information ever seen. Seabury's name and likeness are on the front, and his phone number and email are on the back of the little guy.

We've placed him atop the pile of business cards that's been handed to us this week. We've met a lot of fun people on the show floor at E3, but if we need any LEGO-related advice, we'll know exactly who to call.
Seen@E3: The best business card ever originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 10:45:00 EST. In an attempt to further expand its digital Lego empire, Warner Bros. has partnered with the iconic brick manufacturer and NetDevil to act as the retail distributor for their upcoming family-friendly MMO, Lego Universe. According to the press release announcing the partnership, Warner Bros. will be responsible for distributing the game "outside of LEGO channels." We assume they're talking about Lego Stores, and Legoland, and the underground Lego black market which operates in the shady corners of most metropolitan cities.
Lego and Warner Bros. partner on Lego Universe distribution originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 09:25:00 EST. Luckily for you, the wizards at Hogwarts have decided to share a quick magic lesson that will allow you to do just that starting June 7. Here's how you perform the spell, which, for complicated magical reasons, won't work until June 7:

Download the demo from Xbox Live

Maybe say a magic word or gesture with a wand or something

The incantations and potion-brewing required to bring this demo into existence are somewhat more difficult for a PlayStation 3 and PC demo, so those versions won't be available until later in June. You'll be able to summon those demos just as easily, however, when the time arrives. You have the power within you.
Lego Harry Potter demo materializes on Xbox Live June 7, PS3 and PC to follow originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jun 2010 14:30:00 EST. A brief aside: The scaly antagonist from the Harry Potter series would be a whole lot less intimidating if everyone just shortened his name to Mort, wouldn't he? That's not a name that inspires much fear, even when prefaced with "The Nefarious Dark Lord of All-Wizardkind."

Check out the video above to see a brief vignette of clips from the fourth and final school year featured in Lego Harry Potter, which covers the events of Goblet of Fire. You know, the one with the Tri-Wizard Tournament, and Mad-Eye Moody, and all the thinly veiled lessons about the frightening changes puberty can visit upon teenagers. Yeah, that one.
Lego Harry Potter trailer shows the return of 'Mort originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 May 2010 18:30:00 EST. Somehow -- and we don't know how -- pre-orders for Lego Universe kicked off this past Friday and, again, we don't know how, there's no "special edition" that includes some actual Legos. Some of you Legomaniacs may already know, but boxed copies of the upcoming Lego MMO from Netdevil are now available for pre-order at Lego retail outlets, the online shop, the amusement park (Legoland!) and on LegoUniverse.com.

Dropping your 39.99 USD/EUR or 29.99 GBP on a copy will net you not just the game itself on DVD, but also a month of free play (30 days, to be precise), a "story leaflet," and a user guide -- some folks will also get an "exclusive Minifigure" and a code to redeem said Minifigure in-game ("while supplies last"). Though the game has been in closed beta for some time now, the game has yet to receive an official launch date. That said, we have to imagine that Netdevil is building towards that announcement, right? You know, with Legos? Isn't that what they do over there?

Lego Universe pre-orders now available originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 16 May 2010 11:30:00 EST. We've seen so many instances where the LEGO toy brand has infiltrated the world of video games over the past few years -- that's why it's so downright refreshing to see the tables get turned. Just past the jump is a commercial for that new line of wonderbricks based on the upcoming film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It's full of assassins, traps that are ready to spring on a teeny little Jake <strike>Gyllenhaal</strike> Gyllenblock, but, strangely, nary a trace of the slow-motion -- which is so prevalent in the film and games.

Though your mind may immediately wander to the possibility of a LEGO video game based on Jordan Mechner's action-platforming franchise, we'd like to remind you that LEGO bricks are, in and of themselves, completely rad. LEGO bricks based on one of our favorite game series are doubly so.
We're not certain that we are either, but TT Games certainly has high hopes that we'll get to that point before LEGO Harry Potter's delayed June release window arrives.

The latest "Behind the Scenes" video (seen above) has employees from the UK-based developer detailing the enormous, immersive world that they've built (primarily out of LEGOs, as one might imagine). And though we might argue that we're not exactly looking for "immersive experiences" from our LEGO-based titles, well, it's pretty cute watching little LEGO Harry in action. Even "He Who Must Not Be Named" is kinda adorable with a cylinder head -- how could we resist?!
While Lego Batman and Lego Rock Band have tempted me, I've always stuck with the regular versions of those games rather than diving into any block-based variations. Nevertheless, I previewed TT Games' latest Lego outing, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, with an open mind -- I have read and liked the Harry Potter books and seen and enjoyed most of the movies. Maybe actually seeing Lego Hogwarts in action would win me over.
Whether it's the books or the movies, the kids want to know what's going down at the Hogwarts, whereas we were more concerned with what was going down at the F.A.O. Schwartz in our younger years. That keyboard from Big? We were all about it.

That's why the above trailer is so hard to understand for us. Of course, the classic Traveler's Tales stamp of charismatic plastic dudes and dudettes is there and easily recognizable, but we're just not up on that Potter tip. We lack the info. Good thing Lego Harry Potter is a crash course on the up-and-coming wizard's first four years at that crazy school, right?
Lego Harry Potter trailer is Sirius business originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 19:03:00 EST. We're received a handful of tips, and Massively confirms it: beta invites for the surprisingly hype-worthy Lego Universe beta have started to roll out. It's something we entirely want in on.

But, alas, no invite for us. Our tips box is only a repository for our own sadness, as others regale us with tales of their conquests; their own acquired beta invites. No, it's fine -- don't worry about us. We're just going to sit in the corner, with our real-life Legos, pretending there are actual people behind those hopelessly optimistic smiles, willing to interact with us in a virtual world.
Lego Universe beta invites being sent out originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Mar 2010 23:30:00 EST.
