The OnLive app became available today to be downloaded onto TV sets already purchased, while the cloud gaming service is being pre-installed on future sets. The only thing needed in addition is an OnLive controller.

OnLive was announced as coming to LG Smart TVs with Google TV at this year's E3, Its cloud gaming functionality means players can start and save their games on LG's TV, and then continue on other platforms from where they left off. The service also enables cross-platform gaming, so you can play on your LG TV against others on PCs and tablets.

The news represents a positive upturn from what has been a difficult summer for OnLive. The company accrued debts of $30-40 milion and laid off at least half of its staff before being acquired by Lauder Partners, LLC for $4.8 million.
Continue reading OnLive comes to LG G2 Smart TVs

OnLive comes to LG G2 Smart TVs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Nov 2012 09:00:00 EST. Called Game World, the portal allows users access to a library of paid and free games, "many" of which will be playable in both 2D and 3D. Users can play the games using LG's Magic Remote or third party controllers.

LG's announcement doesn't mention any specific games, though a promo image includes the likes of Cut the Rope, Shadowgun and Plants vs. Zombies. These may be wishful thinking, however, as Polygon points out none of these games are currently available on LG's app store (though other titles pictured are).

Game World will launch this September.
LG opening 'Game World' portal for Smart TV originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 14:30:00 EST. Another port of Resident Evil 4. Seriously though, up until now Android users have been left out in the plagas-infested cold when it comes to Leon and Ashley's romp through rural Spain, which is a pretty sad thought when you consider that RE4 is available on everything from the iPhone to the Zeebo.

There is good news for the ultra-specific Resident Evil enthusiast, however, provided that they live in Korea and have an LTE-enabled Android device by LG. Yes, RE4 is finally coming to Google's little robot, but only on LG's LTE U+ Market ecosystem, which happens to exist exclusively in Korea. The port, which is likely itself a port of the iOS version, could eventually make its way to other Android devices, similar to how Street Fighter IV HD's limited-exclusivity situation keeps it on LG devices until May. For now though, the title is only available in Korea for ₩5,000, or $4.41.

[Thanks, Waylan!]
Resident Evil 4 on Android, exclusive to Korea's LG LTE market (for now) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 22 Jan 2012 19:00:00 EST. The Android OS version of Street Fighter IV we originally caught wind of back in September is now Street Fighter IV HD. As per the original announcement, the game will initially be exclusive to the LG Spectrum, which launches on Verizon January 19.

After LG's limited exclusivity blackout expires, however, Street Fighter IV HD will hit the US Android Marketplace in May for $12.99. A Wifi-enabled VS. mode allows for local multiplayer, although it's unclear whether wireless VS. will require two of the same handsets. Also no word yet on system requirements for non-LG devices, although since the Spectrum is launching with Gingerbread and not Ice-Cream Sandwich, any dual-core Android device seems like a good bet.
Street Fighter IV HD coming to Android Marketplace in May originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST. If you're someone whose hatred of physical media and cluttered entertainment systems is rivaled only by your passion for contemporary gaming and universal controllers, your next television purchase may have just become as conflicted as your eccentric little heart of hearts.

Gaikai and LG have announced plans to place Gaikai's cloud-based game-streaming services inside of LG's upcoming 2012 line of Cinema 3D TVs. The service will use Gaikai's middleware to power an LG-branded gaming portal within the company's existing Smart TV app ecosystem. No information has yet been given regarding how these games will actually be played, but we're hopeful it will involve a controller of some kind, rather than creative use of the TV's remote.

OnLive has also announced further integration of its cloud-based game-streaming service into Google's GoogleTV platform, by way of Vizio's "next generation" of "Internet Apps Plus" devices. Vizio TVs equipped with Internet Apps Plus and GoogleTV 2.0 will allow users to connect their Universal Controller and stream games normally. This is a big leap from OnLive's current GoogleTV presence, which is currently limited to a "Player" app that allows GoogleTV users to spectate OnLive games happening on other devices. No word on whether full OnLive functionality will come to other devices running GoogleTV 2.0.
Continue reading Gaikai coming to LG TVs, playable OnLive coming to GoogleTVs

Gaikai coming to LG TVs, playable OnLive coming to GoogleTVs originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 17:30:00 EST. In what basically amounts to a 3-hit news shoryuken, LG and Capcom have announced that a mobile version of Street Fighter IV will fight its way onto Google's Android OS sometime in Q4 (Hit 1), and that the title will be exclusive to an upcoming LG smartphone (Hit 2), but only for the first three months (KO!).

No pricing or release information has been given beyond the Q4 window, and LG has yet to announce which of its smartphones will receive the title. The press release refers to the manufacturer's "first HD Android smartphone," however, pegging the LU6200 as the prime suspect. No word on whether or not this is a direct port of the iOS version of Street Fighter IV, but the LU6200's slate form factor would easily facilitate the title.

Once we know more about Street Fighter IV's system requirements, we'll have a better idea of which phones will be able to run the fighter once the exclusivity agreement has run its course. LG's LW980T 3D TV is ready to rumble in the market with Sony's PlayStation 3D Display, both of which pander to gamers, allowing players to see separate images from different angles. LG's TV is scheduled for release this month and comes in two screen sizes: 47-inch and 55-inch, for $2,921 (£1,799) and $4,057 (£2,499), respectively. Sony's display is set for release in November and comes in one size, 24-inch, for $500 (£308). The LW980T (such a catchy name) will come with eight pairs of 3D glasses, but the split-screen gaming glasses will cost extra.

LG and Sony recently dropped patent suits against each other and signed a cross-licensing deal after three years of disputes over smartphone, Blu-ray and TV technologies. Sony hasn't sued LG yet, so this must fit within the bounds of their deal -- perhaps because Sony's product is a display, meaning it won't directly receive broadcasts, and LG's is a true-blue TV. Or maybe it's all in the name: Sony's split-screen tech is called SimulView while LG's is called Dual Play. See? Totally different.
LG's new 3D TV has true gaming split-screen, reminds us of another display originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Sep 2011 16:30:00 EST. LG Electronics and Sony have gotten the patent lawyers to heel (good lawyers, have a biscuit) in the two mega-corps' expansive patent disputes over mobile, TV and Blu-ray tech. Reuters obtained a quote from South Korea's LG Electronics stating the two companies have agreed to drop patent suits and have signed a cross-licensing deal.

The patent issues culminated this past February when the civil court of justice in the Netherlands granted LG a preliminary injunction for customs to seize and confiscate all PS3s coming into Europe. Dutch police eventually seized the consoles, only to allow the PS3s to runneth free after Sony won in court. No word yet on when executives from the two corporations will meet to hug out the years of hostility.
Sony vs LG patent issues settled, cross-licensing deal in place, hug status unknown originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 19:00:00 EST. [Update: It looks like Sony won the injunction, and once again the PS3s runneth free! FOSS Patents cites two Dutch sources, along with an independent source. "InsideGamer.nl reports that all seized PlayStations will have to be released, no more seizures will take place, and LG has to pay legal fees amounting to €130,000 (approximately US$180,000)," FOSS Patents reports. "For each day that LG fails to comply, it will be fined at a rate of €200,000 (approximately US$275,000)."]

Sony and LG's protracted patent battle drags on, with PS3s across the Netherlands paying the price. The Guardian reports, "Dutch police have seized several thousand PlayStation 3s at Sony's biggest European warehouse in the latest stage of its acrimonious patent battle with LG."

Following last week's preliminary injunction that ordered customs officers to seize thousands of PS3 consoles entering Europe, Sony will be trying to have the injunction lifted "at an emergency hearing in the Hague's civil court of justice" today. LG will likely request that the consoles be destroyed (no!) while Sony will request that the seizures stop.

"However, this is only a preliminary injunction, that has resulted in shipments being temporarily withheld," a Sony spokesperson told The Guardian. "It does not indicate any acceptance of LG's allegations. We consider these allegations unwarranted, and will take appropriate measures including filing a claim of opposition to courts in the Netherlands."

A court judgment could be returned as early as today, The Guardian posits. And while this is limited to Europe for now, we'd like to remind you that LG is trying to start trouble in the US as well. The struggle between hardware manufacturing juggernauts Sony and LG -- the latter of which claims that the PS3 infringes on a number of its patents relating to Blu-ray technology -- has finally drawn some blood. The civil court of justice in the Hague has granted LG a preliminary injunction for customs to seize and confiscate all PS3s coming into Europe (from manufacturing plants, etc.) for up to ten days. The Guardian reports that the collected consoles are temporarily being kept in Dutch warehouses until the case moves forward.

According to the Guardian, retailers are expected to have enough PS3s to last two to three weeks. Sony has the right to file an appeal to the patents office -- but far more than some boxed-up consoles collecting dust is on the line. Should the court ultimately rule in favor of LG, the console maker would be forced to compensate the company for every single PS3 sold around the world. We've contacted Sony for a comment.
PS3 shipments blocked in Europe as LG wins preliminary injunction originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 15:05:00 EST. What happens when billion-dollar multinational technology conglomerates get in a fight? They don't gather around the flagpole after school; instead, they hurl patents at one another, fast and furious.

After filing a complaint against Korean technology company LG in December pertaining to seven US mobile phone patents, Sony finds itself the recipient of a revenge-complaint (a term we just made up) wherein LG claims that "certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof" violate four of its patents. That includes a lot of devices, like Bravia TVs, but only one piece of Sony hardware was singled out by name: the PlayStation 3 (Model No. CECH-2501A, if you want to be precise).

The complaints are filed with the US International Trade Commission, which has the power to block imports of products that violate US patents. So, in short, LG is looking for the ITC to keep PS3s off American shores. But since that doesn't put any cash money directly in its pockets, LG has "also filed civil suits against Sony in federal court in California, making similar claims and seeking cash compensation for the unauthorized use of its inventions," Bloomberg reports. We think we speak for everyone when we say that we liked it better when fights were settled with violence.
LG strikes back at Sony in patent fight, wants PS3 imports blocked in US originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 12:20:00 EST. Korean television manufacturer LG and Microsoft have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding representing a new partnership in South Korea between the TV maker's 3D sets and Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles, Engadget reports. A press release on the subject (wobbily translated from Korean) seems to say that the 360 will be sold in the region with 3D games in-tow and an LG 55/47LX9500 LED, possibly starting in June. Unfortunately, no details of the partnership could be confirmed with Microsoft or LG reps in the States as of this publishing.

That said, a Microsoft rep told us: "As we've said before, 3D games are available today on Xbox 360 and will continue to evolve. Today, you can buy a 3DTV and wear glasses to play games like Avatar, and more titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum are on the way. The promotional partnership with LG announced in South Korea today is specific to the South Korean market, but is further evidence that as 3D adoption grows, Xbox 360 will support 3D games and entertainment."

Given that statement, we don't see the partnership having global implications just yet -- not to mention the game being played above is Avatar and the two games mentioned by Microsoft are known to be 3D enabled. But hey, at least we got this hilariously awkward image of Microsoft's Alan Bowman playing games with LG's marketing strategy lead, right?
