In addition to its beloved story and incredible visuals, it was a groundbreaking third-person adventure through an intricately detailed fantasy world -- but would we (<a href="http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp?rankings=y">and Game Rankings</a>) still hold the triforce-hunting adventure in such high regard if we had experienced Hyrule directly through the point-eared protagonist's eyes?<br /><br /><a href="http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/crossbow/vol1_page1.jsp">In a recent discussion between Nintendo president Satoru Iwata</a> and revolutionary game developer (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/01/miyamoto-voted-your-time-person-of-the-year/">Time's most influential person of 2008</a>) Shigeru Miyamoto, it was outed that Shiggy secretly possesses a penchant for first-person shooters (notably, Rare's seminal N64 shooter <em>Goldeneye</em>), and that he'd considered creating <em>Ocarina of Time</em> using an <em>Oblivion</em>-esque first-person perspective. We're not quite sure how this would have affected the title -- but we're certainly terrified of the prospect of witnessing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw74lodqNYM&amp;feature=related">Darunia's sexy dance of seduction</a> first-hand.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/11/shigeru-ocarina-of-time-could-have-been-in-first-person-perspec/">Miyamoto: Ocarina of Time could have been in first-person perspective</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 May 2008 12:30:00 EST. Big thanks to <em><a href="http://www.supafine.com/comics/classic.php?comicID=120">Supafine's</a> "</em>Legend of Zelda: Visceration Station" webcomic for finally (and logically) explaining the heart system to us. <a href="http://movies.ign.com/articles/863/863492p1.html">IGN</a> has a little fun this April Fools' Day with its exclusive <em>Legend of Zelda</em> movie trailer. The preview plays out like one giant clich&eacute; with fan service and a distinctive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uwe-boll">Uwe</a> quality to it. We'd love to embed the preview and show you, but the code is broken and all we seem to get is some PSP-licker (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/12/psp-licker-vows-to-rub-games-on-her-butt/">game butt-rubber</a>) hosting a <a href="http://media.games.ign.com/articles/863/863022/vids_1.html">show</a>.<br /><br />Last year we had another impressive Zelda-inspired April Fools' joke with a preview for a <em>Legend of Zelda</em> game set in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/31/april-fools-alert-1-wii-tvs-future-zelda/">a future/<em>Star Wars </em>version of Hyrule</a>. We can't help but think IGN's trailer would have been better (and more over the top) had Link been walking down the street of some poor provincial town and people started bursting out singing like the opening of <span style="font-style: italic; text-decoration: line-through;">La Belle et la B&ecirc;te</span> <em>Beauty and the Beast</em>.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/april-fools-alert-3-legend-of-zelda-movie-by-ign/">April Fools' Alert #3: Legend of Zelda movie by IGN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST. <br /><em>Look</em>, it's all well and good stomping off to rescue princesses and reassemble <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/triforce">golden triangular relics</a>, but at least remember that it's a <em>cold, unforgiving world</em> out there, and you'll need something warm to wrap around yourself at some point. As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/11/its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this-quilt/">the only other Zelda quilt</a> we've posted about was never put up for sale, this one should do the trick, even if it is ... <em>$475</em>?! We advise chopping grass to raise the required funds.<br /><br />Take a closer look at this work of art after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/you-got-the-quilt-of-power/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>You got The Quilt of Power!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/you-got-the-quilt-of-power/">You got The Quilt of Power!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. After the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NPD/">NPD</a> group's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/npd-to-continue-providing-monthly-console-sales-data/">short-lived hesitation</a> in providing monthly US console sales data spawned many an unhappy emoticon, it comes as a great relief to present October's magnificent results. This is especially true considering that all platforms have ducked out of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/september-npd-xbox-360-takes-the-lead-halo-3-to-thank/">last month</a>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3"><em>Halo</em></a> effect and returned to their familiar positions -- the Wii and DS are back on top and the PlayStation 3 is, well, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/sony-says-ps3-sales-increased-dramatically-wont-reflect-in-npd/">you know</a></em>. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/halo-3-guitar-hero-iii-wii--ds-lead-11-billion-in-sales-for-october--/18565/">GameDaily</a> notes that the industry once again saw over $1 billion dollars leaving wallets at uncanny speeds, placing total sales for the year (through October) at $10.5 billion. At the same time last year, the amount had "just" reached $7 billion. <br />

We don't have to tell you that a lot of people weren't exactly fans of <em>The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker</em>; Nintendo fans who loved it (and even those who didn't) heard the complaints over and over again. That's made a few people a little wary of the upcoming <em>Phantom Hourglass</em>, and we understand. Really, we do, even if we don't necessarily agree. But from every scrap we've seen from the latest handheld entry in the franchise, it's shaping up to be a real <em>adventure</em> -- which is the biggest complaint about the series as time goes on. We've seen it. We've done it. We've been been heroic through the ages, and though we love every moment spent in Hyrule, sometimes, we crave something a little different. From the looks of things, we're about to get just that, and more.<br /><br />Our own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher/">JC Fletcher</a> spent some time with <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> recently at PAX, and his report is nothing short of <em>glowing</em>. Everything in the game feels fresh and new, and what's more? It's just plain fun. There are all the elements we need for a Zelda game: familiar enemies and tasks, but the smooth stylus-based controls turn the forests and seas of Hyrule into a whole new world. We've been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/ds-daily-is-phantom-hourglass-still-your-most-wanted/">waiting for this one</a> for a long time, but the closer we get to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/phantom-hourglass-to-set-sail-october-1st/">release</a>, the more it seems that it's all been worth it. <br /><br />We've tucked a video behind the break that offers up a short glimpse of simple navigation that shows off the stylus-based movement, so you can see for yourself. Just watch out for the trees. <br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/in-zelda-even-walking-can-be-an-adventure/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>In Zelda, even walking can be an adventure</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/in-zelda-even-walking-can-be-an-adventure/">In Zelda, even walking can be an adventure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 12:20:00 EST. Anyway, right on the heels of the second installment in their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/23/final-fantasy-retrospective-beginnings-parts-i-and-ii/"><em>Final Fantasy</em> retrospective</a>, GameTrailers has also released the first part in their <em>Metroid</em> retrospective. The five part series starts off with <em>Metroid</em> on the NES and <em>Metroid II</em> on the Game Boy, subsequent episodes will come out every week.<br /><br />Of course, the series goes in game release order and not chronological order. <em>Metroid II</em> is actually much later on in the Samus plot line than the <em>Metroid</em> games of recent -- but we're sure that'll all get explained. This retrospective seems to be done just as well as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/zelda-retrospective-the-end-my-only-friend-the-end/"><em>Legend of Zelda</em></a> and <em>Final Fantasy</em> ones we've come to enjoy. Hopefully in time they'll find a little section on the site to dedicate to these for lazy Sunday afternoon viewing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/25/metroid-retrospective-explores-first-two-games/">Metroid retrospective explores first two games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 19:57:00 EST. <br />
For such a popular console that tries to offer something for everyone, the Wii also manages to be somewhat controversial -- and we're not just talking about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/ny-times-says-r-rated-movies-are-gorier-than-ao-manhunt-2/"><em>Manhunt 2</em></a> here. The motion-sensing controls have been a bone of contention when it comes to nearly every game, even those people seem to enjoy. Some gamers find them awesome, and others ... not so much. We've selected six games which cover a range of game types (and aren't all first-party, either) as a measuring stick of what you think is best when it comes to Wii controls. We encourage you to vote early (and often!), but feel free to talk about other choices in the comments, as well as the reasons behind your picks.<br />
<br />
You might have noticed that <em>Wii Sports</em> isn't on this list (and neither are several other well-received games!). We considered including it, because not everyone agrees that it works quite well as a showcase of the Wii control capabilities, but decided at the last minutes to include only non-bundled games. Feel free to voice your support for <em>Wii Sports</em> in the comments, however!<br />

<div align="left">Why don't more t-shirts take this <em>Wind Waker </em>shirt's example? It uses official art from the game, and doesn't add any silly slogans. There's nothing here about <a href="http://www.80stees.com/products/Pacman-Back-in-The-Day-T-shirt.asp">how the 1980's were neat</a>, or about <a href="http://www.clubnamco.com/product.php?productid=254">being a "player"</a> or anything. It's just a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/wear-baby-link-if-you-have-the-courage/">cute image of Link</a> in some tall grass. We would totally wear this shirt, even to the <em>grocery store.</em><br /><br />Oh, we also like the shirt because the <em>Wind Waker/<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Phantom%20Hourglass">Phantom Hourglass</a> </em>art style is incredible, but you knew that.<br /><br /></div>

It's true, we didn't hear much about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/our-keynote-reactions-let-us-tell-you-them/">Nintendo's E3 keynote</a>. But Nintendo discreetly dropped some images into a press release and stuffed them into our briefcase, giving us the notion that if they happened to be shown to you guys, it wouldn't be <em>terrible.</em><br /><br />A few new screenshots have been added to the gallery, as well as some character art. One of the pieces is the same artwork used in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/possible-english-language-phantom-hourglass-box/">supposed US boxart</a>, which, to us, confirms the validity of that boxart. Man, the <em>Wind Waker</em> art style still out-styles pretty much everything else out there, especially in mainstream AAA games. Sorry, <em>every other game.<br /></em><br />
<em></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/e307-zelda-screens-and-delightful-artwork/">E307: Zelda screens and delightful artwork</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 20:40:00 EST. Released in Japan just a few days ago, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/20/famitsu-loves-zelda-gives-phantom-hourglass-near-perfect-score/"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> has performed respectably on store shelves so far. And by "respectably" we mean the Japanese have devoured the game as ravenously as we would eat popcorn if forced to watch <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/uwe-boll-lands-distribution-deal-for-trio-of-films/">Uwe Boll's</a> rendition of <em>Alone in the Dark</em> (you know, to distract us from the pain). The DS game sold 350,000 copies in just two days, making it the fastest-selling <em>Zelda</em> game since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/ocarina-of-time-warps-onto-virtual-console-this-monday/"><em>Ocarina of Time</em></a> nearly ten years ago. Now if we can just contain our excitement for six more months, we'll get to enjoy the game in English!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/phantom-hourglass-sells-350-000-copies-in-two-days/">Phantom Hourglass sells 350,000 copies in two days</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 09:31:00 EST. Designed to be played without ever being touched, its harmonies have been described as "music from the ether." Sounds wild? This was all dreamed up by Russian physicist Lev Termen in 1919. He later went on to invent motion detectors for automated doors and KGB espionage devices. Head past the post break for video of Randy's performance. </p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/theremin-theme-the-legend-of-zelda/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Theremin theme: The Legend of Zelda</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/theremin-theme-the-legend-of-zelda/">Theremin theme: The Legend of Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 16:00:00 EST. After a year of waiting, Tingle's trusty UK fanbase will be appeased with the release of <em>Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland</em> on September 14. <br /><br />Originally released in Japan in September 2006, <em>Freshly Picked </em>is a unique action RPG that has Tingle traveling to various islands, solving puzzles and battling enemies all in the pursuit of rupees. Given the title character's poor standing with western audiences, we're as surprised as anyone that this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a> spinoff is being localized for the English market, and didn't just stay in Japan <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/zelda-spinoff-rpg-to-star-tingle-in-a-pink-colored-rupee-land/">as we all <strike>hoped</strike> thought it would</a>.<br /><br />Well before Tingle-mania reaches their shores, European DS owners will also be getting a handful of first-rate portable titles. <em>Metroid Prime Pinball</em> was just released this past week; <em>Brain Age 2</em> will be landing on June 29 (well before the North American launch date); <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/06/elite-beat-agents-rocks-up-in-europe-july-13th/"><em>Elite Beat Agents</em></a> is out on July 13th, and <em>Pok&eacute;mon Diamond and Pearl </em>will be taking over the lives of British children on July 27.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/tingle-rpg-headed-to-uk-but-normal-games-are-too/">Tingle RPG headed to UK, but normal games are too!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 18:05:00 EST. <br />If you're lucky enough to have a Hastings store nearby, the entertainment retailer is offering to exchange your moth-eaten copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/superpapermario"><em>Super Paper Mario</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em></a> for a waggle-fied edition of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/re4"><em>Resident Evil 4</em></a>. Put away the other two <em>RE4</em> games you've already bought for previous platforms, throw on a shirt that shows off your belly-button-ringed midriff, and check past the post break for the full flyer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/trade-in-your-old-ports-for-a-new-port/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Trade in your old ports for a new port</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/trade-in-your-old-ports-for-a-new-port/">Trade in your old ports for a new port</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 16:10:00 EST. Respected Japanese gaming publication <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Famitsu/">Famitsu</a> has reportedly given <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/LegendofZelda/">Legend of Zelda:</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PhantomHourglass/">Phantom Hourglass</a></em> a near-perfect 39 out of 40 score, according to <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=166276">CVG</a>. That number is based on four reviewers -- three giving the DS adventure a perfect 10, and one dissenter only awarding 9 points.<br /><br /><em>Phantom Hourglass </em>is the 17th game to earn a near-perfect score of 39 (<em>A Link to the Past</em> was the first). Two <em>Zelda</em> titles to have earned perfect scores are <em>Wind Waker</em>, which was the sixth game ever to earn a perfect score from the publication, and <em>Ocarina of Time</em>, which was the very first. [<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famitsu#Perfect_scores">Source</a>] So yeah, Famitsu really loves <em>Legend of Zelda</em>. They want to <em>marry</em> <em>Legend of Zelda</em> and then get divorced and cite "irreconcilable differences." It's hard to understand, we'll explain it when you're older.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/20/famitsu-loves-zelda-gives-phantom-hourglass-near-perfect-score/">Famitsu loves Zelda, gives Phantom Hourglass near-perfect score</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jun 2007 19:50:00 EST. Ever wanted to read a novelization of the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/LegendofZelda/">Legend of Zelda</a></em> series? No? Well, we've got one for you, anyways.<br /><br />A blogger known as Grownup Gamer has begun a project where he will be writing extensively about every game in the <em>Legend of Zelda</em> series in chronological order. We can't emphasize the word "extensive" enough -- each entry is extremely detailed, but <a href="http://bloggingzelda.blogspot.com/">Blogging Zelda</a> fortunately is well-written enough to be an interesting read. <br /><br />Grownup Gamer has actually been blogging since the <a href="http://bloggingzelda.blogspot.com/2007/05/introductions.html">end of May</a>, spending just under two weeks to complete the first and second quests in the original NES <em>Zelda</em>. He is currently mowing through <em>Zelda II: The Adventures of Link</em>. <a href="http://blog.mainetechgeeks.com/2007/05/happy_memorial_day.html">Fifteen titles</a> in all have been planned for completion, including the yet-to-be-released <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PhantomHourglass/">Phantom Hourglass</a>.</em><br /><br /><strong>See Also:<a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/06/08/the-shields-of-zelda/"><br /></a></strong><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1182232559354*/">The Shields of Zelda</a><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2007/06/18/the-legend-of-zelda-the-blog-of-blogging/">4cr</a>; <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/zelda-ds-lite-mod-demands-slew-of-positive-adjectives/">image source</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/blogging-through-every-legend-of-zelda/">Blogging through every Legend of Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 04:15:00 EST. With less than two weeks before its Japanese release, Nintendo has opened the official website for <em>T<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phantomhourglass">he Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</a></em>. Treasures hidden within include several new videos that show off basic gameplay and Link's touchscreen control. To promote laziness (and so you don't have to sludge through squiggly Japanese menu screens) we've embedded the videos below. For an extra dose of Zelda fun, try playing all three at the same time!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/06/13/phantom-hourglass-site-opens-with-new-videos/">DS Fanboy</a>]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/">Phantom Hourglass</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/#259002"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/news_250507_zelda7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/#259001"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/news_250507_zelda6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/#259000"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/news_250507_zelda5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/#258999"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/news_250507_zelda4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/phantom-hourglass/#258998"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/news_250507_zelda3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/phantom-hourglass-site-opens-new-videos-inside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Phantom Hourglass site opens, new videos inside</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/phantom-hourglass-site-opens-new-videos-inside/">Phantom Hourglass site opens, new videos inside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 11:30:00 EST. With <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/phantomhourglass">Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</a> nearly released--well, for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/zelda-phantom-hourglass-hits-japan-in-june-this-june/">Japanese gamers</a>, that is--GameTrailers has posted a few brief gameplay clips that show the touchscreen controls. Gamers outside of Japan will have to wait until later this year to play the DS RPG/adventure. (Make the wait even longer by watching <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/08/zelda-phantom-hourglass-japanese-commercials/">Japanese commercials</a> for the game.)<br /><br />Start forming opinions on the controls. After the break, watch demos of movement, swordplay, and curved boomerang throws, all handled with the stylus.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/todays-most-stylistic-video-ds-zelda-controls/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's most stylistic video: DS Zelda controls</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/todays-most-stylistic-video-ds-zelda-controls/">Today's most stylistic video: DS Zelda controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. The clips mimic the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/zelda-commercials-provide-whole-seconds-of-gameplay-footage/">commercials</a> that've been advertising the handheld adventure in Japan, showing off Link's new touchscreen movement and controls. We know that you hate to pay long-distance fees for visiting sites outside of the country, so we went ahead and embedded the movies after the post break. Really, there's no need to thank us -- let's just say you owe us one.<br /></div>

What do you think of the new look? <span style="font-style: italic;">Wind Waker</span> fans should recognize the crustacean shape, as it originally showed up on our hero's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/04/finally-a-use-for-pants/">pajamas</a> in the GameCube game. <br /><br />Link's shield has been as much a staple of the <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/zelda">Zelda series</a> as the adventurer's green cap, deflecting octorok attacks and pushing away charging enemies. Over the past two decades, the defensive device's design has evolved much from its original cross emblem to incorporate Triforces, various winged figures, and decorative accents. <br /><br />We've collected over a dozen of the different layouts that we spotted at <a href="http://www.thehylia.com/">The Hylia</a>, leaving out mirror shields and other deviations (e.g. Ordon shield), and have lined them up for you to compare and constrast after the post break. A new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/26/ninja-gaiden-speed-runs-set-new-records/">speed run</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/13/twilight-princess-models-ripped-enhanced-put-in-strange-poses/"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em></a> has just been posted on Speed Demos Archive. Daniel Hart blazed through the game in 5 hours 39 minutes, about ten times faster than we hobbled our way through on the first try. Daniel says he could shave 5-7 minutes off the final time but is happy with the current achievement. We say he's<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/five-minute-mario-a-world-record-yes-and-no/"> bragging</a>, but boy has he earned it. Videos are available for download as well as embedded in Flash (Part 1 is shown above) for easy ooh-ing and aah-ing. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/06/04/the-abridged-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/">Nintendo Wii Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/04/twilight-princess-speed-run-in-under-6-hours/">Twilight Princess speed run in under 6 hours</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Jun 2007 13:30:00 EST. After approximately 325 different and generally inappropriate permutations, we finally concluded that the above and dreadfully straightforward headline would be best suited to conveying the arrival of today's four new old <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Virtual Console</a> games. "Zelda Moons Midori on Funkotron" was certainly a viable option, but it simply inspired the wrong sort of mental image. We actually want you to envision these four games arriving on the Wii's Virtual Console service at 9AM PST today:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Milon's Secret Castle (</em>NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Though it's not much of a <em>secret</em> castle if the title gives it away, it certainly is one that adheres to video game tradition. Expect to rescue a princess and several valuable items -- musical instruments in this case -- within its recesses.<br /></li>
    <li><em>ToeJam &amp; Earl in Panic on Funkotron</em> (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Video game tradition is given the boot here, with amusingly mismatched aliens, <em>Toejam &amp; Earl,</em> saving their planet by ridding it of a human scourge.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Dead Moon </em>(TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Alright, now we're back to protecting the Earth from alien invasion. It's why we have side-scrolling shooters like this one.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Zelda II: The Adventure of Link </em>(NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Everyone's favorite pointy-eared protagonist returns to Hyrule in the Virtual Console's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/zelda-ii-coming-to-virtual-console-monday/">100th release</a>. Aid Link in his battle against the forces of evil, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a>'s newfound narcoleptic tendencies and an endless wave of <em>best Zelda ever / worst Zelda ever</em> controversy.</li>

It's tough going to the party without a date. Earlier this week, Nintendo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/21/nintendo-dates-metroid-prime-3-mario-strikers-charged-others/">laid out its release plans</a> up until September 2007, notably leaving a still dateless <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> out of the whole affair, forcing it to watch as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metroidprime3"><em>Metroid Prime 3</em></a> marched to the ball with an alluring 20th of August on its cannon arm. With no solid release window in sight, the Wii's frantic fighter must have considered going on a lonely drinking binge and slipping into a coma until 2008.<br /></div>
<br />That is, until Reggie Fils-Aime administered an unforgiving slap to the face and instilled hope once more. Speaking at the recent Nintendo Summit in Seattle, the Nintendo of America president confirmed that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/smash-bros-site-now-up-music-detailed/">musically rich</a> <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> and <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> would both be out before your Official Iwata Swimsuit 2007 calendar becomes worthless. <em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em> for DS was given similar assurances and will likely join the anticipated Wii duo in this holiday season's battle for shoppers. You'd best start stocking up on that financial ammunition.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/super-smash-bros-brawl-still-on-for-2007/">Super Smash Bros. Take a look at the Japanese box art for <em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em> (via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/05/22/phantom-hourglass-japanese-boxart-ftw/">DS Fanboy</a>). The art style and content is very reminiscent of <em>The Wind Waker</em>, which makes us curious: given the passage of time since the GameCube release and the fulfillment of a more "adult" Link with <em>Twilight Princess</em>, how you do you feel about the young Link look? Think about it, and check out the highlights for today:<br /><br /><strong>Joystiquery<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View Joystiq hands-on: PlayStation Home on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/joystiq-hands-on-playstation-home/">Joystiq hands-on: PlayStation Home</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Joystiq interviews BioShock LE cover artist Adam Meyer on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/joystiq-interviews-bioshock-le-cover-artist-adam-meyer/">Joystiq interviews BioShock LE cover artist Adam Meyer</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Readers pick best webcomic: Wii and my shadow on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/readers-pick-best-webcomic-wii-and-my-shadow/">Readers pick best webcomic: Wii and my shadow</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Today's goal-reaching videos: Mario Strikers Charged on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/todays-goal-reaching-videos-mario-strikers-charged/">Today's goal-reaching videos: Mario Strikers Charged</a><br /><br /><strong>News<br /></strong><a target="_blank" title="View Smash Bros. site now up, music detailed on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/smash-bros-site-now-up-music-detailed/">Smash Bros. site now up, music detailed</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Skid Row, Poison, Extreme in 80s Guitar Hero on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/skid-row-poison-extreme-in-80s-guitar-hero/">Skid Row, Poison, Extreme in 80s Guitar Hero</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View New Metroid Prime 3 screenshots on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/new-metroid-prime-3-screenshots/">New Metroid Prime 3 screenshots</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Step right up for Carnival Games: more minigames for the Wii on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/step-right-up-for-carnival-games-more-minigames-for-the-wii/">Step right up for Carnival Games: more minigames for the Wii</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Riddick remake confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/riddick-remake-confirmed-for-ps3-xbox-360/">Riddick remake confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Sony's High Velocity Bowling started 'literally right before' Nintendo announced Wii Sports' Bowling on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/sonys-high-velocity-bowling-started-literally-right-before-ni/">Sony's High Velocity Bowling started 'literally right before' Nintendo announced Wii Sports' Bowling</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View No DirectX 10 update for Supreme Commander on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/no-directx-10-update-for-supreme-commander/">No DirectX 10 update for Supreme Commander</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Konami expects Metal Gear Solid 4 by March '08 on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/konami-expects-metal-gear-solid-4-by-march-08/">Konami expects Metal Gear Solid 4 by March '08</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Tom Clancy's EndWar to be fully voice-controlled on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/tom-clancys-endwar-to-be-fully-voice-controlled/">Tom Clancy's EndWar to be fully voice-controlled</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Haze will have four-player co-op campaign on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/haze-will-have-four-player-co-op-campaign/">Haze will have four-player co-op campaign</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View Halo 3 beta adds Banshee on Valhalla on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/halo-3-beta-adds-banshee-on-valhalla/">Halo 3 beta adds Banshee on Valhalla</a><br /><a target="_blank" title="View WoW patch 2.1 helps feed the habit on Joystiq" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/wow-patch-2-1-helps-feed-the-habit/">WoW patch 2.1 helps feed the habit</a><br /><br /><strong>Rumors &amp; We're hugely excited about the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Zelda/">Zelda</a>, and advise you check <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/famitsu-makes-with-the-phantom-hourglass-screens/">here</a> for the screens we showed you last week. It's coming out on Saturday July 23rd, exactly 11 years after the Nintendo 64 hit the shelves. It's highly unusual for a game to come out on a Saturday in Japan, where Thursday is the traditional release day for new titles. It seems you're not just <em>Time Magazine</em>'s overall <a href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1569514,00.html">person of the year</a>, you're also the most influential. At least when it comes to <em>influencing</em> a poll on the <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100walkup/article/0,28804,1611030_1612457,00.html">100 most influential people of the year</a>. After being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/miyamoto-industry-snubbed-by-time-100/">nominated</a> for <em>Time'</em>s own top 100, it comes as little surprise to see Nintendo's legendary designer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/16/who-needs-wii-play-dress-up-with-shigeru-miyamoto/">Shigeru Miyamoto</a>, place highly in the list constructed by internet users. With an average rating of 75 (out of 100) and 129,573 votes, the Mario maestro places 9th and effortlessly defeats the likes of Oprah Winfrey (43rd), George W. Bush (97th), George Clooney (26th) and <em>Nelson Mandela</em> (24th). Sure, the anti-apartheid, pro-democracy Nobel Peace prize winner wasn't involved in the creation of a new video game system this year, but we'd be remiss not to point out the amusing and somewhat bizarre priorities of voters.<br /><br />And what of the list above Miyamoto? There you'll find Kiefer Sutherland (8th), J.K. Being a generally mild mannered and lackadaisical bunch, we become worried when an impressive DS Lite mod <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=130108922790">appears on eBay</a> and suddenly implants within us desires that are nothing short of sinister. Crafted by the same hands and mechanical forceps (probably) that produced an equally attractive <em>Legend of Zelda</em> <a href="http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/03/15/pretty-much-the-best-wii-case-mod-ever/">Wii makeover</a> just over a month ago, this particular variant of Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/npd-march-belongs-to-ds-ps2/">portable powerhouse</a> demands a dramatic increase in our current rupee supply.<br /><br />We don't care how many blades of grass we have to mercilessly chop down or how many pots must be senselessly shattered to further our goal. This little device, with its customized charging stand and LED that is "calibrated to not be overbearing <strong>or</strong> too dim" must be ours. <br /><br />Or <em>yours</em>, if you outbid us. True, a portion of your money would go to Penny Arcade's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/childsplay">Child's Play</a> charity, but we'd <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/impossible-mission-to-stay-in-wii-shop-channel-forever/">forever</a> hold a grudge. The kind of grudge that will see <em>all your precious </em>(and amusingly buoyant) <em>pigs tossed into the nearest ocean.</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/">DS Lite Zelda mod</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231973"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231971"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231978"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ds-lite-zelda-mod/#231981"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/zelda_ds_mod_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dsfanboy.com/2007/05/03/pretty-much-the-best-ds-lite-mod-ever/">DS Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/zelda-ds-lite-mod-demands-slew-of-positive-adjectives/">Zelda DS Lite mod demands slew of positive adjectives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 15:44:00 EST. The set, which features a total of 86 different cards, does not have a release date at this time, but will only set you back $1.99 per pack. Each pack contains 3 standard cards, 1 special foil card, 1 tattoo card, and 1 sweepstakes card (win a Wii kind of thing).<br /><br />We'd probably have enjoyed it more if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=twilight+princess"><em>Twilight Princess</em></a> could be turned into a trading card <em>game</em>, but anything else we can get our hands on to remind us how <em>amazing</em> that game is, well ... we won't complain. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.landofthelegend.net/Hyrule/?grab=news&amp;catch=read_more&amp;nid=1575">Land of the Legend</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/twilight-princess-trading-cards/">Twilight Princess trading cards?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2007 12:15:00 EST. Zelda Universe's novice translation of the scanned pages indicates that the title might support online voice chat. Though this feature doesn't seem useful beyond setting up matches and trash-talking with your friends, it's a nice addition to the meager <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/08/gdc-07-legend-of-zelda-impressions/">multiplayer mode</a>.<br /><br />With upcoming games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon">Pokemon Diamond/Pearl</a></em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/paneldepon"><em>Panel de Pon</em></a> also planning to use the Nintendo DS' VoIP capabilities, purchasing the uncomfortable-looking, official <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/headset">headset</a> is beginning to make a lot more sense to us. Of all the titles we expected to eventually include voice communication, Phantom Hourglass was definitely not one of them. <br /><br /><font color="#ff0000">Update:</font> Having a bit more experience with the Japanese language, <a href="http://www.thehylia.com/index.php?subaction=showfull&amp;id=1176614187&amp;archive=&amp;start_from=&amp;ucat=5">The Hylia</a> translated the <em>Famitsu</em> scans in an effort to confirm this news. The latest issue of Japanese magazine <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/famitsu"><em>Famitsu</em></a> reveals that this year could be different with the early release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/phantomhourglass"><em>The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass</em></a> on June 23rd.<br /><br />After seeing that the only <em>Phantom Hourglass</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/08/gdc-07-legend-of-zelda-impressions/">previews</a> available at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc07">GDC</a> were of the game's multiplayer mode, we didn't think that Nintendo would have Link's new adventure ready until Christmas. The announced date is for Japan, of course, but we don't expect a significant delay for its North American arrival. The series has always experienced more success in the US, sales-wise. <br /><br />June 23rd happens to fall on a Saturday, which is unusual when you consider that outside of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dragonquest"><em>Dragon Quest</em></a> and hardware debuts, most games in Japan are brought out on Thursdays. Could a Zelda-themed DS Lite also be in the works? We've got our fingers crossed!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/phantom-hourglass-due-for-june-saves-summer/">Phantom Hourglass due for June, saves summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. If there's one thing we love, it's retro tracks brought back for another round. That's why we're featuring a medley of songs from the original <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda">Zelda</a></em> game (NES) remixed by electronica musician Ochre, for your Sunday listening pleasure. <br /><br />We imagine that trying to add anything on top of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kojikondo">Koji Kondo's</a> classic work without ruining it is a difficult task, but this arrangement doesn't miss a step. Ochre's interpretation blends the 8-bit pieces with his own playful style, taking the listener through a six-minute daydream of Link's adventures. If you're a fan of lush synths and summery rhythms, we definitely suggest downloading this song along with Ochre's other remixes and original offerings at his site.</p>

We aren't sure how we'd rank those two things. <br /><br />Maybe we should start quilting, so we can have our own enormous pixel-perfect Link holding a very <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziggurat">ziggurat</a>-esque Triforce. But we aren't sure we're up to the challenge of cutting and sewing together over 400 squares. In fact, we know we aren't. We're exhausted from reaching up to the number keys just now.<br /><br />Seen any amazing game-related <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/craft">crafts</a> lately?
