In the case of Lumines: Electronic Symphony, when ordered from Amazon, that advantage entails three exclusive MP3 downloads.

Purchases of the puzzler from Amazon will come with three MP3s by composer Makoto Asai, from the game's "secret unlockable stages." Amazon has the release date listed as February 14, in time for the early First Edition Bundle.

Aside from the Q? produced tracks, artists with music in Electronic Symphony include "Kaskade, LCD Soundsystem, Chemical Brothers, Bebel Gilberto, Goldfrapp, Josh Wink, Safri Duo, Amon Tobin," and more.
Lumines: Electronic Symphony includes bonus MP3s at Amazon originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 10:30:00 EST. Like good, sane people, our friends at AOL Radio are huge fans of God of War. They've not only managed to add the entire God of War III original soundtrack to the Video Games Score station, but they're also giving away a free downloadable MP3 from the upcoming PS3 game. "Brothers of Blood," composed by Cris Velasco, has everything you'd expect from a God of War instrumental track: a brass-heavy orchestral score with dramatic choral singing.
Valve has announced Steam users who pre-order Plants vs. Zombies before its May 5 release will receive a free copy of Heavy Weapon Deluxe right away. While both titles are from PopCap's library, they couldn't be more from one another. Plants vs. Zombies is the latest in a never-ending stream of tower defense style games while Heavy Weapon Deluxe puts is an action title putting players in control of an atomic tank.

If one free thing isn't good enough, you can also rock out to the Plants vs. Zombies trailer theme song, "Zombies on Your Lawn" by downloading the tune today. Performed by Laura Shigihara, the song -- which will no doubt be stuck in your brain forever -- is available for download at our sister site BigDownload in both English and Japanese flavors. We dare you to try and hate it.
Steam announces Plants vs. Zombies pre-order bonus, trailer tune available originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Apr 2009 21:00:00 EST. These games are actually some quality titles, too. None of that burning through their stock of Anubis II or anything, we're talking top-notch games. So what's on offer?
Those of you who like all-in-one devices might be familiar with Visteon's Dockable Entertainment system. Even though we see this as more of a "we like the idea but wouldn't actually buy one" item, this portable player supports Game Boy Advance games, as well as DVDs and music. Therefore, it's the perfect device for people who were looking for a GBA-meets-music-player-meets-DVD-player to keep them (or their children) busy on long drives.

This is all old news and exposition, though. The interesting part is that Visteon told GamerTell in an interview that they hope to come out with two new Dockable Entertainment systems, one featuring the Wii and the other the DS. These plans are nowhere near definite, but the fact that Visteon is looking into them is enough to get us excited. Granted, a portable Wii device that can also play DVDs and CDs is the more appealing of the two, but a DS version isn't too shabby of an idea, either. Of course, the potential pricing on these devices has us nervous, considering that the GBA version cost a cool $1,200 with installation when it came out.
Visteon looking into multi-use DS and Wii devices originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST.
While it was never a big success and never really lived up to its full potential, the Zune was a good little device that no doubt sold more than it might've otherwise had it not been available at dedicated game stores. Now after almost two years, the media player is being dropped from the one of the US's largest games retailers.

Citing a lack of customer appeal and their own misplaced anticipation, (perhaps they thought MS would bring some games to the device) Gamestop will no longer be selling the Zune in-store and will only be selling them online as long as it takes them to run through their existing inventory. Hmm ... hopefully this'll mean that the online store will have some good discounts as its stock gets low ....

The U.S. has had it since last summer, and even Europe has been enjoying the game for a few months now. It only debuted in Japan last week, though, and we were happily surprised to see it make the top five. It only sold 32,000 copies in its first week, but that's still not too shabby for a Metroid game in Japan. Hopefully, the game will have some legs and not plunge off the charts after its first week, like many other first-person shooters tend to do.

As for other software, the Wii didn't have too many games in the top thirty -- only eight, in fact -- yet it was still the second most represented gaming system on the charts. With the exception of the aforementioned Metroid and Everyone's General Knowledge Training TV, all the Wiis top games have consistently stuck around for (at least) a few weeks.

In other news, Smash Bros. once again failed to take the first place spot. The game beat out last week's chart champ, the new Gundam for the PS2, but fell behind the newly released Yakuza 3.

In hardware, the Wii claimed the top spot once again as Japan is clearly so over the Mint Green PSP (that was so five minutes ago). You can check out the hardware and software numbers for last week in Japan after the break -- we recommend that you do so.
Continue reading Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 3/3-3/9

Another Week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 3/3-3/9 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. After all, they've waited over a year since the Wii's launch for this opportunity.

Here's a list of homebrew developments from just today.
Apple is hoping you can't get enough of Rock Band, promoting on its website a playlist featuring 74 songs of the game for a whopping $73.26. At $0.99 per song, that's a savings of exactly 0% -- in other words, resist the temptation to buy the whole package (iTunes link) and feed your Phase addiction by downloading the songs you like individually (from either iTunes itself or via one of its competitors).

While the lack of savings might leave room for pause, at 74 songs (that's main setlist and quite a few of the DLC tracks), Apple still missed some of the best gems -- namely, every single bonus song. A quick search on iTunes led us to finding all but four of the bonus tracks ("29 Fingers," "Outside," "Nightmare" and the power ballad "Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld"). If you're looking for a more eclectic mix, search for the bonus 9 tracks available; that'll only cost you $8.91.
We can do without "whiny" being the default setting for so much indy/emo music, but Arlington-and-Grand Prairie-Texas-based Man Factory serves up enough indy-powerpop-rock to offset any latent emo sadness. Plus the group's latest project is a series of seven songs written from the perspectives of Street Fighter characters. The series is called, "Street Fighter II: Rock Opera: Round 1," and hits enough high notes that we hope rounds two and three follow.

The band offers such tracks as "Chun Li, i'm lovin it," and "There goes Dhalism" for free at its site. (Or visit the MySpace page to play them in-browser and download the whole package as a zip file.) With the end of 2007 approaching at near lightning-fast speed, we thought it would be nice to check out what you, the excellent reader, thought about the games of this year. First up, we have the obvious: first-party games. We have a good idea which game you're going to say, but in the name of healthy debate, check out all of the choices past the break.
Continue reading Best of 2007: First-party games [update]

Best of 2007: First-party games [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 11:15:00 EST. Would you prefer your Nintendo Wii to get jiggy wit' your Will Smith MP3s? Our first piece of advice would be to not download the new Photo Channel, version 1.1, which replaces MP3 support with AAC. If it's too late for you, then we recommend taking these simple steps, provided by Nintendo itself:

From the main menu, click the "Wii" button

Select Data Management

Select Channels

Select Photo Channel 1.1 and confirm you want to delete it

Photo Channel 1.0, the original, automatically returns to the main menu

If you change your mind yet again, then you can always re-download the update. Yes, Nintendo's providing instructions on how to downgrade your Photo Channel to keep playing MP3s - it even says in the description, "for instance if you'd rather have MP3 compatibility instead of AAC." Why Nintendo couldn't figure out how to support both formats simultaneously - a feature available in pretty much every other audio player out there - is beyond our comprehension. If audio quality is really their concern, we wonder if version 1.2 will continue the trend and abandon AAC for FLAC.

[Via NWF]
Downgrade Wii Photo Channel, keep playing MP3s originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Dec 2007 06:00:00 EST. The update that will make the Photo Channel lose MP3 support is finally here, and we can only imagine how utterly gutted you are. Or maybe "utterly indifferent" would be more fitting.

Fortunately, if you're like us and think this "upgrade" makes no sense (even though we don't even use the Photo Channel), there are steps you can take to resist switching to AAC compatibility. First, you can avoid downloading the Photo Channel 1.1 upgrade altogether, which is the easiest course of action, as this means you don't have to do anything. If it's too late and you've already downloaded the upgrade (for curiosity's sake, perhaps?), then you also have the option to downgrade the Photo Channel back to version 1.0, which allows MP3 playback. Just follow Nintendo's handy instructions here to get the downgrade.

Of course, this will only work with Wiis sold before December 2007, so if you've gotten yourself a shiny new Wii for the holidays, you're out of luck.

[Thanks, hollyw0od!]
Photo channel update avoidable and reversible originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 16:00:00 EST. As gamers, our focus is often on playing games and not the subtleties that go on behind the scenes. If we only knew about all those details, though, we might be shocked to find out how something like the Metroid Prime series almost never came to be.

Retro Studios president and CEO Michael Kelbaugh recently talked about the Prime arc at the 2007 Montreal Games Summit. In the conference, he explained the pressures of having his (at that time) rookie studio pick up such an important franchise, and how Miyamoto was influential in taking the series from third person to first person.
Continue reading The road to corruption: Retro Studios and the making of Metroid Prime

The road to corruption: Retro Studios and the making of Metroid Prime originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 14:15:00 EST.
While most Wii owners are too busy playing Super Mario Galaxy or checking out Miis to care, Nintendo has announced through their web site some pending updates to the Wii's Photo Channel. Call it a bad news sandwich on good news bread. The good news: After the update you'll be able to choose a favorite picture as the channel's Wii menu icon. The bad news: MP3 music playback will be replaced with support for the higher-quality but much less-accessible AAC format. The good news: The AAC files can be played back in a random order. Mmm... sandwich.

While the added features are nice, we're pretty amazed that Nintendo has managed to make the potentially-useful-but-in-practice-pretty-annoying music playback feature even worse by changing up the formats. As Wii Fanboy points out, even those with copious, iTunes libraries in the <strike>proprietary</strike> AAC format are unlikely to be able to play them on the non-Apple-endorsed Wii (and don't go restarting those pesky merger rumors -- no one is getting bought out) due to the DRM issues. But, again, unless you're one of the three people who uses the channel regularly, you're probably too busy to care. Go back to your business ... nothing to see here.
Wii Photo Channel gets better, worse in December originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 15:55:00 EST.
"Still surprised to catch you, every time.
Still surprised to catch you, by and by and by and by."

"Butterfly Nets," Bishop Allen's carefree track from the band's May EP, might not share the same blood as The Legend of Zelda series, but if you stand the two side-by-side, comparing their congruent features and similar jawlines, you'll see how they could be from the same family tree, or at least the same family orchard.

The New Gamer has put up a downloadable mp3 of the song, as well as an analysis on how its lyrics and mollifying tone unintentionally matches that sense of discovery and wonder one often has when exploring Hyrule. The track's title itself recalls memories of chasing flitting bees and fairies with a bug-catching net in A Link to the Past.

On a somewhat related note, we had the pleasure of meeting Bishop Allen's lead singer, Justin Rice, when the Brooklyn-based indie band was touring with Mates of State a few years ago. He started chatting with us in a public restroom, visibly three sheets to the wind, while we were washing our hands, and somewhere during the conversation, he convinced himself that we were searching for a misplaced friend. Someone is attempting to create a fairly decent GPS program, VoIP is already possible and Nintendo already released their own mp3 player in Europe.

So, we figured it would be best if we asked some folks who knew best about the DS: you. What kind of applications or functionality would you like to see come from the DS? Sure, some more fleshed-out DS/Wii connectivity would be nice, but that's the obvious choice. Come up with some good ones!
Top 5 desired app list causes us to reflect on our own desires originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 23:31:00 EST. Despite being unofficially canned in November 2005, Metroid Dread, the rumored 2D-throwback project for DS, is back on the radar. New evidence has been uncovered by IGN (and other privileged Metroid Prime 3 reviewers) while scanning a certain panel found mid-game in this week's Wii release. Using Samus's scan visor, the message reads:

"Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion."

Is Dread back from the dead? Maybe -- or perhaps MP3 developer Retro is just pulling an insider's gag. It's time for Nintendo to fess up.
Metroid Dread 'nearing completion', hidden Metroid Prime 3 message teases originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 12:58:00 EST. The London and Royal Symphony Orchestras don't just work for anyone. Composer John Debney, who worked on films such as "Passion of the Christ" and "Sin City" was given almost unprecedented musical freedom when he was asked to score Lair. In a recent PlayStation.blog entry, he notes: "Creating new, original themes for this primal world has been one of the most stimulating experiences of my career, something I will look back on and cherish. The overall tone of the work can best be described as operatic, ethnically rich, lyrical, elegant and, at the same time, tragic." The musical landscape looks to be quite complex!

And he also offers a sample [Download MP3] of one of the tracks from the game. In typical Factor 5 fashion, it is incredibly epic. No, it's not from some big-budget movie ... this will be coming from your PS3 when the game comes out next month.
Moving from Christ to Lair: creating the music originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 10:00:00 EST. Michael Kelbeugh, head of Retro Studios, confirmed to GamePro that no online multiplayer would be included in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, much to the relief of of lil' Timmy Eldridge, the apple-cheeked teen that Nintendo has come in on the weekend to run their online gaming strategy. "Unless you're sending pictures of metroid that you captured, I really don't know how to help you," lil' Eldridge said as he swept the Nintendo commissary (his weekday job).

For his part, Kelbeugh gave the credit for a top-notch single-player campaign for his team's inability to include newfangled multiplayer technology. "It's something we talked about early on, but we only have so many resources. We opted to devote those resources to making a better single-player experience." Oh well, we guess there's always Metroid Prime 4.
Metroid Prime 3 will not have online multiplayer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2007 08:15:00 EST. You know, I was sitting here and enjoying a nice bowl of oatmeal, when suddenly a small and frightening object came crashing into my office here at Wii Fanboy Estates. It was none other than Joystiq's Ludwig Kietzmann. "I have something for you, David," he said, shortly before slapping me in the mouth. As the universal Joystiq greeting, I felt obliged to return the gesture, but so hard was Ludwig's smack, I found myself on the floor before having time to react. Clearly, he had put some time in with the company.

"We've got Metroid Prime 3 boxart!" he said, slamming a sheet of paper down onto my <strike>collection of milk crates I call a</strike> desk. As I picked myself up off the ground and looked the sheet over, I stroked my chin in a manner that most people do when they're looking over a sheet of paper. "So ... what game is ...?" I ask, only to find myself slapped again before the last syllable escapes my mouth. Then, Ludwig jams another piece of paper in my face, one that shows off boxart for a certain Sega title called Sonic Adventure 2.

"We must warn the people!" he screamed, as he jumped out of the window like a flying rodent escaping a dark underworld. I wondered if he was dead (my office is on the 73rd floor), when just then I saw him atop a flying hyena, off toward the sunset. "That Ludwig," I think to myself. "He sure is one awesome dude."

I then realize my wallet is missing. And so is one of my kidneys.

[Via Joystiq]
Metroid Prime 3 boxart revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 02:01:00 EST. Sarcastic Gamer's "No Frickin' Games!" is a musical parody of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" that talks about the Playstation 3 having ... well, no frickin' games. And, as you know, we're not all about PS3 bashing here at X3F, but this song is too funny-good-times not to share with you guys. Heck, we've laughed at our 360 too with the "Ring of Fire" parody, because it's also greatness on a bun. So, give the song a download, have a good laugh, and thank the lord that we don't have to deal with a lack of games on our 360.
Wake me up when the PS3 has games ... originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 23 Jun 2007 12:30:00 EST.
With less than three months away from its August 20th release date, Nintendo has started to put some push behind Metroid Prime 3: Corruption with five new screenshots. You won't see any previously unannounced features, and these images follow Nintendo's tradition of grabbing awful stills from games that otherwise look great in motion, but uh... the logo artwork is certainly impressive. Considering that we haven't gotten much media from the FPS-adventure series since last September, this will have to suffice for now.

[Via Joystiq]
New Metroid Prime 3 screenshots rolled out originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2007 10:40:00 EST. Notable titles include Boogie (releasing this Fall), Mario Strikers: Charged (July 30th), Battalion Wars 2 (September) and Space Station Tycoon (August). Oh, and a little title by the name of Metroid Prime 3 receives a release date of August 20th. While it isn't the release date we were all hoping for, it's still better than the Christmas time release we were all expecting.

For the full list of games, head past the post break.
Continue reading Nintendo drops the bomb on us, MP3 this Summer

Nintendo drops the bomb on us, MP3 this Summer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2007 11:15:00 EST.
Rhythm games belong to a genre that has received a lot of attention over the last few years, probably as a result of a little title called Guitar Hero. Eidos hopes to get a piece of the pie with its own Traxxpad, coming to a PSP near you. The game turns your PSP into a portable music studio where you can synthesize and cook your own beats to make your own jamalicious tracks. What's most interesting is the ability to export your killer tunes via mp3, so you can roll down the street and blast your freshly cooked tunes into the eardrums of any nearby bystander. Delish. Take a look.

That was really something we had high hopes for, as the gameplay sounded truly revolutionary, and thus perfect for the <strike>Revolution</strike> Wii. But it's probably easy to talk up something that may or may not even exist. Still, the Frontline/Nibris split, and the delays on Nintendo's most-anticipated first party titles, plus what we've seen so far ... well, frankly, sometimes it makes us a little concerned. While a lot of the added-waggle ports have been surprisingly good so far, we're not seeing a lot of right-here, right-now, pop-'em-in-the-Wii original games for our shiny original system. At some point, we just have to ask ... is developing fresh, new games with sensible motion sensitive controls (like Wii Sports, but bigger) really so difficult? Some of these games have been years in the making, after all. And we're all for the wait, mind you, if it results in a more perfect gaming experience, but we're still a little anxious at times when we see fallout like this.
Wii Warm Up: Sadness, delays, and concerns originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Apr 2007 09:00:00 EST. If there's one thing we love, it's retro tracks brought back for another round. That's why we're featuring a medley of songs from the original Zelda game (NES) remixed by electronica musician Ochre, for your Sunday listening pleasure.

We imagine that trying to add anything on top of Koji Kondo's classic work without ruining it is a difficult task, but this arrangement doesn't miss a step. Ochre's interpretation blends the 8-bit pieces with his own playful style, taking the listener through a six-minute daydream of Link's adventures. One of those reasons is simplicity: iTunes allows music listeners to sync the music on their computers and the music on their portables quite easily. The latest release, iTunes 7, allows album art and relevant track information to be downloaded automatically. Kingbee116 from the PlayStation forums has come up with a solution for PSP owners, using software called MediaMonkey. This iTunes-like program will allow your PSP to become a better MP3 player, and will ensure that your songs feature album art when they play back on your PSP. Get detailed, step by step instructions at the PlayStation forums.

Of course, the PSP has one feature that the iPod currently doesn't have: built-in wi-fi. Kingbee116 has yet another incredibly detailed guide which shows you how to make the most out of your PSP's RSS feature. With his tutorial, you'll be able to stream internet radio wherever you have a wi-fi connection. Certainly, his tutorial will go quite handily with our newly launched feature, RSS this!

[Thanks, Kingbee116!]

Comprehensive guides for making your PSP a better MP3 player originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jan 2007 16:15:00 EST. Billed as a music-puzzle game, Traxion was going to integrate Kuju's music analysis technology with a player's MP3 collection (stored on the PSP Memory Stick), generating a series of minigames that would correspond to certain elements of each song -- the game would also include its own licensed tracks. Unfortunately this ambitious project has proved to be the undoing of Kuju and publisher LucasArts's partnership.

While both parties have declined to comment on the specific circumstances that led to the breakup, the official statement (from both sides) is that the split is a mutual decision. While Traxion's future is uncertain, Kuju has confirmed it's developing other music-based software for unspecified platforms.
Traxion ditched, PSP loses unique music puzzler as LucasArts and Kuju split originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 19:55:00 EST.
OK, so the white DS Lite already looks an awful lot like an iPod, but the resemblance is even stronger now that hackers have made an MP3 player for the system that mirrors the iPod interface, right down to the blue-on-white menus. GBADev has more info and a download link, and YouTube has a video showing off the touchscreen-as-clickwheel hotness.

The player requires a specially-designed DS or GBA flash cart to work, and the memory on those things pales in comparison to even the smaller iPods. Still, a neat little hack to show off to your iPod-loving friends.

iPod + DS = DSpod? iDS? ipoDS? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 12:20:00 EST. Then we see the whip marks in the mirror and read about other people getting to playtest a preview build of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and it throws us into a maddening rage as we, in a Hulk-like trance, destroy everything in our path. Suddenly, our offices full of cobwebs, shackles and Hot Pockets are destroyed and we lay huddled in the corner, crying ourselves to sleep.

Now that the introduction of horrible imagery is out of the way, what exactly did GamePro have to say about the game, what little of it they were able to play? Well, impressions were good, however they focus more on the control scheme of utilizing the Wiimote than anything else, speaking of using the Grappling Hook to rob enemy units of their shields.

Other than that, GamePro really didn't have anything more to share, so hopefully they're saving all of the juicy information for a more adequately sized preview article.
Metroid Prime 3 gets the preview treatment originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Jan 2007 13:15:00 EST. Without the inclusion of a SD card in the package, as well as headphones, in order for one to actually use this thing it'll cost over $100 bucks when all is said and done. Not to mention the fact that it doesn't allow for playlists, the whole package doesn't sound too appealing.

It's sad, really, as we would've enjoyed having the free pocket. There's a short video of the mp3 player intro screen embedded into the post, past the jump.
Continue reading DS mp3 player reviewed

DS mp3 player reviewed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Dec 2006 13:55:00 EST. Song navigation will be handled via the touch-screen, where all song information will be listed, as well.

This MP3 player isn't limited to the DS (and/or DS Lite), also being fully compatible with the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro. The MP3 player will set back Europeans around 30 € when it releases next month.
Nintendo announces MP3 player for Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Nov 2006 11:55:00 EST.
