Including every single Metal Gear release, from the original <em>Metal Gear</em> on the MSX2 through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-hd-collection"><em>Metal Gear Solid HD</em> <em>Collection</em></a> for the 360 and PS3, Hideo Kojima's groundbreaking masterclass in theatrics and stealth has amassed 31.1 million units sold, as of December 31, 2011.<br /><br />To put that in perspective via a completely arbitrary and meaningless number crunch, that's 3.8 Metal Gear games sold for every person living in New York City. Put another way, if you took every Metal Gear game ever sold and laid them all end to end, the resulting line of cartridges, discs and boxes would stretch all the way from San Francisco to <em>somewhere else</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/metal-gear-series-sells-31-1-mill-over-lifetime/">Metal Gear series sells 31.1 mill over lifetime</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. Call it a <em>retro-speculative.</em><br /><br />We didn't intend to cover the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/22/virtually-overlooked-snatcher/">series</a> two weeks in a row, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/23/japanese-virtual-console-gets-two-new-systems/">recent</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/20/zombies-and-turtles-found-on-esrb/">developments</a> in the world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a> made a discussion of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/konami">Konami</a> RPG for the MSX2 computer seem timely. Maybe, we thought, our prayers for <span style="font-style: italic;">Snatcher</span> caused the universe to swing things our way a little bit. Well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vo">here</a>'s another appeal.<br /></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><em>SD Snatcher </em><span style="font-style: normal;">takes the violent, gritty, sci-fi detective story of </span><em>Snatcher</em><span style="font-style: normal;">, and presents it as a turn-based RPG populated by big-headed "super deformed" characters. We choose to believe this decision was some postmodern playfulness from Hideo <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kojima">Kojima</a>-- deliberately downplaying the dramatic aspects of his game and overlaying obvious videogame conventions on top of it, like when Psycho Mantis in </span><em>Metal Gear Solid</em><span style="font-style: normal;"> read your memory card. Or it could just have been that Japanese gamers like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rpg">RPG</a>'s a lot.</span></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/virtually-overlooked-sd-snatcher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: SD Snatcher</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/01/virtually-overlooked-sd-snatcher/">Virtually Overlooked: SD Snatcher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 17:35:00 EST.
