Remember that famous scene in the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068646/quotes"><em>The Godfather</em></a> where Michael tells Fredo to never take sides against the family? Well, in the world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mafia-ii"><em>Mafia 2</em></a> -- set in post-WWII America -- that movie wasn't filmed yet, so <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/betrayal-of-jimmy-is-exclusive-ps3-launch-dlc-for-mafia-2-ji/">PS3-exclusive DLC</a> protagonist, Jimmy, never learned that lesson. Feel free to see what we mean in our gallery of fresh screens below.<br />
<br />
<em>The Betrayal of Jimmy </em>DLC will be free to all who pick up <em>Mafia 2</em> for the PS3 new (via an included voucher) and available for download through PSN for $9.99 when the game launches on August 24.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/">Mafia 2 -- The Betrayal of Jimmy</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/#3242224"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/brnw-dregec2010-07-20007-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/#3242225"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/brnw-dregec2010-07-23025_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/#3242226"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/brnw-dregec2010-07-23033_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/#3242227"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/brnw-mpitr2010-07-23162_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-2-the-betrayal-of-jimmy/#3242228"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/brnw-mpitr2010-07-26032_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/07/see-jimmys-betrayal-in-these-new-mafia-2-screens/">See Jimmy's betrayal in these new Mafia 2 screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Aug 2010 00:00:00 EST. Take-Two sent over a press release announcing a partnership between 2K Games and Valve, whose Steam platform will power the PC version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mafia-2"><em>Mafia 2</em></a>'s online multiplayer and bestow upon those who pre-order a free copy of the original <em>Mafia </em>game -- available to download and play immediately prior to the sequel's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/25/mafia-ii-ready-to-hit-retail-august-24-2010/">August 24</a> launch date. Don't use Steam? No matter - the deal is good through "select digital retailers" including Steam and applies to both the standard and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/26/mafia-2-collectors-edition-and-pre-order-offers-announced/">collector's edition</a>, so you've got some say in the matter. Talk about an offer you can't refuse!<br />

In advance of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/25/mafia-ii-ready-to-hit-retail-august-24-2010/">August 24</a> release date, 2K Games announced a Collector's Edition for the PS3/Xbox 360/PC gangster game. <br />
<br />
The Collector's Edition includes the standard bonuses for this kind of thing: an art book, soundtrack, and SteelBook case. It also comes packaged with a "high quality, tear-resistant map" of Empire Bay, and a code for a downloadable "Made Man Pack" with two luxury cars and two suits, including a tuxedo.<br />
<br />
In addition, retailers are offering the following <a href="http://www.mafia2game.com/preorder/">bonuses</a> with pre-orders of (any edition of) <em>Mafia II:</em>
<ul>
    <li>GameStop has the "Vegas Pack" featuring Vegas-inspired cars and suits, and a "War Hero Pack" with two military vehicles and uniforms.</li>
    <li>Amazon offers the "Renegade Pack" including '50s-style cars and leather and lettermen's jackets for Vito, so you can live out your <em>Happy Days</em> crime fantasies. You also get a $10 discount on a future game purchase.</li>
    <li>Best Buy has the "Greaser Pack" with two "hot-rod speedsters" and two racing-style outfits.</li>
    <li>Walmart.com is offering a "$10 Gift Card" which will allow you to buy $10 worth of merchandise at Walmart.</li>
</ul>
<meta charset="utf-8"> We know it might be tempting to acquire the game in a thematically appropriate manner (having it "fall off a truck,") but these bonuses provide a compelling reason to actually purchase it from a retailer. Also, the whole "jail time" thing.</meta><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/26/mafia-2-collectors-edition-and-pre-order-offers-announced/">Mafia 2 collector's edition and pre-order offers announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 May 2010 14:30:00 EST. Sometimes, you have to roll up the sleeves of that expensive suit you can't explain how you have come to possess and put in some work -- some <em>dirty</em> work. And that's the focal point of this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mafia-2"><em>Mafia 2</em></a> developer diary.<br />
<br />
Protagonist Vito Scaletta shows he's just as good at slinging lead as he is throwing his fists around. But, he's also not afraid to do more damage by setting cars on fire and leading the coppers on a chase around the city. Our personal favorite, however, has to be his proficiency at rolling grenades beneath cars. We like to call that move "The Lebowski."<br />
<br />
Anyway, hit the play button on the player above and enjoy. Consider it an offer you can't refuse.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/12/mafia-2-dev-diary-takes-care-of-some-business/">Mafia 2 dev diary takes care of some business</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 May 2010 22:00:00 EST. She's certainly not lacking in the character department, with "character" being one of the two themes the clip focuses on, and "story" making up the other half -- even though she's only allowed a few short lines in welcoming "her boy" back home. We're hoping, however, for some good old-fashioned early 20th century <em>maternal scolding</em> as Vito dives deeper and deeper into the criminal underworld of 1940s <em>slash</em> '50s America. He's just doing what he's gotta do to get by, Ma!<br />

That's probably because it <em>was </em>almost a year ago that 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks) demoed live gameplay from the title (which had been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/mafia-ii-whacking-xbox-360-playstation-3-and-pc/">announced </a>nearly a year and a half before <em>that</em>.) Today, it was time to finally get my hands dirty as a virtual wiseguy, but first I had to put some clothes on.<br />
<br />
In all seriousness, protagonist (I guess he's that, right?) Vito Scaletta had just woken up after a pretty wild night (judging by the various undergarments strewn around his bachelor pad) when my demo kicked off, so I of course jogged around turning on faucets and flicking light switches before <em>actually doing</em> what the game was instructing me to do: Get dressed. Leaving Vito's apartment, I stepped out into a world as pitch-perfect in its depiction of the 1950s -- the cars, the clothing, the architecture, the music -- as I can imagine. So what if the car that I hopped into and the place I was driving around -- Empire City -- never existed in any real era?<br />
<br />
I spent the first few minutes of the demo causing all sorts of mayhem. Heck, the <em>very </em>first thing I did was get into a fender bender (putting it mildly) from which I fled, only to learn that the punishment for a hit-and-run in the '50s was, evidently, only a few dollar fine. But my trouble with the fuzz didn't end there.<br />

It doesn't take much to excel in this thing of ours. You have to have brass <em>whatnots</em>, be willing to do some unsavory acts and put the family above all else -- basically, don't be <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredo_Corleone">Fredo</a>. It's not that hard, when you think about it, but the latest trailer for 2K Games' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mafia-2"><em>Mafia II</em></a> disagrees. Apparently, in post-WWII, there weren't a lot of guys who had the stomach to use cover-based shooting mechanics and traverse a sandbox-style environment. Frankly, we're shocked that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Generation">The Greatest Generation</a> had any shortcomings at all!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/mafia-ii-trailer-needs-guys-like-you/">Mafia II trailer needs guys like you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 18:30:00 EST. During the <em>always thrilling</em> Take-Two Interactive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/17/take-two-revenues-up-in-q4-down-overall-for-the-year/">quarterly investors call</a> this afternoon, the ever-elusive <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mafia-2">Mafia 2</a></em> received an almost, kinda sorta release date: Q3 2010. When applying Take-Two's Q3 dates to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar">Gregorian calendar</a> that most folks on this planet use, we can infer that the game will arrive somewhere between May 1 and July 31. This isn't to say that the title is a shoe-in for release, though, with company CEO Strauss Zelnick saying the game is "scheduled to fall in our third quarter." Remember when <em>Max Payne 3</em> was scheduled for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/max-payne-3-coming-to-xbox-360-ps3-pc-this-winter/">release in Winter of 2009</a>? <em>Exactly</em>.<br />

Take-Two advised its shareholders of two big delays that will impact its earnings for the rest of the financial year. The upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mafia-2"><em>Mafia II</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/red-dead-redemption">Red Dead Redemption</a></em> have both been delayed "to allow additional development time for the titles and to maximize their full potential in terms of the quality of the player experience and market performance." In other words, the development teams needed a bit more time.<br />
<br />
The two titles are now planned for the first half of fiscal 2010, which spans November 2009 to April 2010. This means either of these games can still make the all-important holiday shopping season. However, even without <em>Mafia</em> and <em>Red Dead Redemption</em>, Take-Two still has a relatively strong lineup with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock-2"><em>BioShock 2</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/rockstar-announces-gta-the-ballad-of-gay-tony-coming-to-xbox-l/"><em>The Ballad of Gay Tony</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/borderlands"><em>Borderlands</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/mafia-ii-and-red-dead-redemption-delayed-to-fiscal-2010/">Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption delayed to fiscal 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 May 2009 17:05:00 EST. Our friends at <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/46949.html">GameTrailers.com</a> have a new trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2/">The Godfather II</a> that showcases an interesting feature coming to the EA franchise: Don Control. The multiplayer feature offers what looks to be an RTS-style control system where one person hosting an online match can place bets on the match (that will in turn carry over into the single-player campaign), issue commands to their human teammates (should they cooperate, that is) and follow individuals of their choosing from a third-person perspective. <br /><br />Rather than phoning in the <em>de rigeur</em> multiplayer, it seems as though EA has taken the extra time afforded them by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/ea-whacks-the-godfather-ii-release-plans-delays-game/">the game being pushed back</a> to beef up a very different experience than what the single-player campaign offers. To see exactly what we're talking about, hit the break to check out the trailer.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/">The Godfather II Multiplayer - Don's View</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443163"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image45-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443162"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/10.15.118.37-image40-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443161"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x329_y38_z-185_000015-3202009-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443160"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x344_y38_z-182_000014-3202009-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-godfather-ii-multiplayer-dons-control/#1443159"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/zone01_high_h20_m1_x326_y38_z-168_000018-3202009-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/21/don-control-in-godfather-ii-introduces-rts-style-gameplay-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Don control' in Godfather II introduces RTS-style gameplay you can't refuse</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/21/don-control-in-godfather-ii-introduces-rts-style-gameplay-you/">'Don control' in Godfather II introduces RTS-style gameplay you can't refuse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Mar 2009 20:30:00 EST. EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/ea-we-shouldve-put-more-eggs-into-the-wii-basket/">John Riccitiello</a> doesn't like to keep things bottled up. Whether it's displeasure at how his gardener trimmed the bushes in his back yard or the change to the tried-and-true meatloaf recipe his wife enacted last night, if John's got something on his mind, odds are it's coming out of his mouth. And, for that, <em>we love him</em>.<br /><br />Take, for example, a recent investor call he took part in. The EA CEO spilled the beans that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/ea-boss-confirms-sequel-to-the-godfather/"><em>The Godfather 2</em></a> would be releasing shortly after another big EA title, <em>Left 4 Dead</em>. This would mean the game is slated for late this year to early next year for release. We're wondering if that's even possible, to tell the truth.<br /><br />We haven't really seen or heard much on the game, so we kind of have a hard time believing that it could release so soon. Also, with the Wii version of the game releasing later than other versions of the first title, we're wondering if EA will plan on doing that again with the sequel.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/ea-ceo-late-08-early-09-godfather-2-release/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/ea-godfather-2-in-late-2008-or-early-2009/">EA: Godfather 2 in late 2008 or early 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Aug 2008 19:29:00 EST. 2K Games has announced the target platforms for its "beautifully crafted look into the dark and unforgiving world of the Mob," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2k-games-announces-mafia-ii/"><em>Mafia II</em></a>. Surprising no one outside of the most hopeful and delusional Wii fans, it has been confirmed that the depicted 1950s environment is intended for the Xbox 360, PC (Games for Windows), and PlayStation 3. The dev dons at the recently formed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/take-two-brings-mafia-dev-illusion-softworks-into-the-family/">2K Czech</a> also offered up some new screenshots for our gallery below. Obviously, we couldn't refuse.<br />

Take-Two has draped its money hat over Czech Republic developer Illusion Softworks, acquiring the studio best known for its <em>Vietcong</em>, <em>Hidden &amp; Dangerous</em>, and <em>Mafia </em>franchises. The developer, which operates out of both Brno and Prague, will now adopt the less-inspired title of 2K Czech. It's unclear what effect, if any, this will have on the studio's current or future projects, with Take-Two stating only that the developer continues to pound out code for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2k-games-announces-mafia-ii/">previously announced</a> <em>Mafia 2</em>, which will ship...someday for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/take-two-brings-mafia-dev-illusion-softworks-into-the-family/">Welcome 2K Czech: Take-Two brings Mafia dev Illusion Softworks into the family</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 10:30:00 EST. 2K Games has <a href="http://ir.take2games.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=260590">announced</a> that it will be publishing <em>Mafia 2</em>, sequel to 2002's organized crime sim, <em>Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven</em>. Developed by Illusion Softworks for "next generation consoles" and Games for Windows, the game faces unbelievably steep and varied competition as it vies to be "the industry's most compelling Mafia title to date." It also promises to deliver "high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative," though we're not sure why you'd be driving a giant white hand or getting married in the course of the story. But hey, they had us at the high octane gunplay bit.<br /><br />As evidenced by the initial batch of screenshots, the 1940s tale of fine suits and illegal activities hopes to be just as cinematic as a Hollywood film -- preferably one involving mobsters and godfathers. If those offer any guidance, however, it may be wise to cancel any plans for <em>Mafia 3</em>.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/">Mafia II</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/#1502852"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/mafia_ii_march_09_online_screenshot_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/#747114"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/mafia-2-city04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/#1502853"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/mafia_ii_march_09_online_screenshot_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/#747115"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/mafia-2-city07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mafia-ii/#1502854"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/mafia_ii_march_09_online_screenshot_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2k-games-announces-mafia-ii/">2K Games announces Mafia 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 12:25:00 EST. Maybe if Doctor Melfi tried this with Tony Soprano, he could've worked out his anger issues without that near-death experience. Nothing soothes the angry nerves of the savage beast like a few rounds of a <em>GTA</em>-like game. Of course, you need to be careful you don't carry it over into the real world. Whenever we play <em>GTA</em> for hours (days) and then finally get in a car, it is so tempting not just fly off a ramp and bypass traffic.<br />

No idea what system they're gaming on either ... just check out all the buttons on Bart's controller. It's like the red-headed stepchild of the Dreamcast that never came to fruition and only exists as some ideas doodled on a napkin at a Japanese karaoke bar somewhere.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/todays-most-therapeutic-video-simpsons-gta-parody/">Today's most therapeutic video: Simpsons 'GTA Parody'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2007 00:01:00 EST. Sure sounds like an oxymoron, don't it? Well, for the gang that boasts, "you hit me, <em>we</em> hit you," it's serious business.<br /><br />Of course, <em>Animal Crossing: Wild World</em> is not without its limitations, and we suppose there's not much risk in wronging this mafia. What's the worst they could do? Chop down your tree? Regardless, if you're in need of <em>ACWW</em> buddies, this might not be a bad crew to get involved with. After all, thy claim to "do many things other clans won't try..." Sounds like fun.
